f an array of uncrowded beaches some with hidden enclaves surrounded by sea grape covered paths is what you are after, Vero Beach and Sebastian have 26 pristine miles of them. Many of the beaches are untouched by progress, which inspires uninterrupted time with a significant other; or time to read that bestseller that has been on the nightstand, or a fun day of sandcastle building or seashell hunts with the family. Relax on our beaches, but you’ll find that the activities are endless. Try something new like paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing or metal detecting.

Meet Locals ENJOY OUR FAVORITE NATURAL NEIGHBORS – FROM SPOTTING SEA TURTLES MAKING THEIR WAY HOME TO KAYKING WITH MANATEES,.. >> MANATEES
When the winter gets chilly, manatees that migrate and those that stay along the Treasure Coast all year congregate in and around the warm waters of the lagoon and Sebastian River. Because they’re mammals, manatees also head to creeks and canals in search of fresh water to drink. At Round Island Park you’re also almost guaranteed to see a manatee! There are trails, boardwalks and an observation tower. This is a favorite spot for locals and visitors to launch their kayaks or canoes. Amenities include ample parking, boat ramp & boat parking, childrens’ playground and two picnic pavilions. Indian River County is a birding paradise! Whether you’re an experienced birder or just a beginner our native birds are sure to delight. In addition to being part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, Indian River is also home to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge – America’s first wildlife refuge. As you travel the byway, you’ll be taken back by the unique and diverse habitat, special places and breathtaking scenery that await you. For any birding excursion, remember to bring a hat, water and sunscreen for the strong Florida sun. And of course, don’t forget your binoculars!

Participants are given the opportunity to view a Loggerhead sea turtle nesting on the beach. These educational programs are conducted under a state permit and should not be attempted without a state permitted guide. Make sure you visit Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is 248-acres spanning over 20.5 miles. The Refuge is designated a protected habitat for what is the most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the Western Hemisphere, and the most significant area for green turtle nesting in North America.

Kayak through Old Florida The St. Sebastian River is a hidden natural gem! You’ll be transported back in time as you paddle through old oak forests and past ancient cypress trees on your way downriver. On your tour, you will see a plethora of wildlife like small alligators, manatees and birds hunting the shallow river. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the prehistoric looking gar fish with its long “snout” complete with a full set of teeth. OUR WATERWAYS
Vero Beach, Fellsmere and Sebastian are filled with beautiful
waterways and extensive areas of native wetlands and forests
that we so carefully protect. There are numerous opportunities to explore a myriad of native habitats abounding with birds
and other wildlife. Whether you enjoy boating, bird watching, taking an exciting eco-tour, or quietly paddling with family
or friends on an “Old Florida” river our county is the place to visit.
>> TAKE OFF WITH TREASURE COAST SEAPLANES
>> GLIDE OVER THE MARSH ON AN AIRBOAT TOUR
To experience the wonderful waterways and expansive natural areas of Indian River County from above, try a spectacular ride on a seaplane with Treasure Coast Seaplanes. Flying at only 500-1,000 feet, you are high enough to fly over hawks and vultures circling gracefully in the thermals, but low enough to spot sharks, manatees and alligators in the various water bodies below. In little over an hour you can fly right over the heart of Vero Beach, then along the beautiful blue-green Atlantic coastline. We buzzed over large expanses of native pine forests and cypress domes, and then landed on the 6,555-acre Blue Cypress Lake where we were awed by the remoteness of this serene, wild respite. Reaching a speed of nearly 60 mph and then lifting off from the water is indescribable – you’ll have to just try it for yourself.
Explore Florida wetlands teaming with wildlife on an hourlong airboat tour. If you’ve never been on an airboat, you won’t be disappointed. As a matter of fact, you’ll be awed and likely ask yourself why you waited so long to try it. It is truly a wonderful feeling as you powerfully skim across beautiful marshland only a half-hour west of Vero Beach. The marshland is part of a vast system of wetlands that, together with the adjoining Blue Cypress Lake, make up the headwaters of the St. Johns River. This important river flows north 310 miles from Indian River County, through the City of Jacksonville, and into the Atlantic Ocean. The wetlands you’ll experience were restored from farmlands that were drained for agricultural uses more than 100 years ago. They are now home to as many as 7,000 alligators, dozens of bird species and a variety of wetland habitats to support them.

WATER ACTIVITIES
>> ENJOY A RELAXING PONTOON BOAT TOUR There is not a more peaceful and relaxing way to enjoy the beautiful Indian River Lagoon than on a eco tour. Your captain and first mate will weave the pontoon boat through hidden waterways that manatees and dolphins frequent year-round. On a tour, you can see herons, egrets, spoonbills and pelicans up close fishing and roosting on the “bird” islands set aside by the state for our feathered friends. You’ll also learn some of the colorful history of our area while kicking back for a leisurely cruise on this comfortable vessel. The Indian River Lagoon is the most biologically diverse waterway in North America so you won’t return without seeing something fascinating.
>> GO AFLOAT ON A PADDLE BOARD TOUR If motors and boats are not your style, try your hand at paddle boarding in the peaceful Indian River Lagoon. Paddlers from ages 5 to 85 can enjoy the simplicity of paddling on the water; it’s surprisingly easy to steer and standing up gives you a better vantage point to see below the water’s surface. You’re free of the constraints of a kayak or canoe as you glide easily along. If you become fatigued, you can always kneel or sit for a spell and then get right back up again. It’s an innovative way to get exercise while enjoying all the wildlife the Lagoon has to offer. Many tour operators offer sunrise, sunset and yoga paddle board tours.

with it, much of the hope of keeping Phillip V in power and his country afloat. The survivors were rescued, and a five-year salvage operation was set in motion. While some was recovered, it was a scant dent in the tens of millions of dollars (in today’s conversion) lost. Vero’s own world-renowned Spanish historian and treasure researcher Dr Eugene Lyon is famed for his take - “It’s ship soup out there” - for while the 1715 Fleet is the best known wreck, our Treasure Coast waters and beaches have over hundreds of fleets and solo ships that met the same demise.
Opposiite page: Recovered gold and silver on display at Mel Fisher Museum. Paintings of the Fleet and subsequent wreckage (to right). Far right: A view inside the McLarty Museum, dedicated to the 1715 treasure.
In 1939, a local charter boat captain named Joe Conway discovered two very old shipwreck sites, one south of Sebastian Inlet and one off Vero Beach. While the small amount of artifacts recovered were confirmed Spanish, little more came of this discovery until the 1950s, where more cannons, were found...and gold and silver by he buckets. WWII military surplus metal detectors began to uncover gold and silver that had remained hidden just inches beneath the sand for hundreds of years, prompting a slew of new treasure hunters. The shipwreck site discoveries found in this “golden era” stretch from Sebastian Inlet to Stuart, spawning a moniker that has stuck - the aptly named Treasure Coast. Including a recent haul, millions of dollars of treasure have been recovered over the last sixty years, and yet, there are approximately five treasure ships for which are unaccounted. To learn more about this incredibly intruiging time in our area’s history, we have the only museum dedicated to the 1715 Fleet, the McLarty Museum. Loaded with artifacts, dioramas, cannons and a dramatic movie retalling the disaster, the museum is
built on a Spanish salvage camp location, andhas a boardwalk that overlooks one of the shipwreck sites. Looking to try your hand at recovering some buried treasure? To have the best chance of success on our shores, you first need a good quality metal detector equipped with a salt-water/sand search mode, as the only area you are allowed to detect is wet salty sand. The legal area on the beach in which you may forage is from high tide mark to the low tide mark. Never in the water, there are very strict laws against it. Go out and give it a go after a hard northeastern blow. As the famed treasure hunter Mel Fisher used to say, “Today is the day!” Happy Hunting on our true Treasure Coast.

ARTS & CULTURE

A seemingly impossible combination of an unassuming beachy town, free of high-rises, with quietly sophisticated cultural gifts.
his native New Yorker was pleasantly surprised when I went to the pretty hamlet of Vero Beach, Florida, to visit my parents’ new home just steps from the surf. The little town vibrated with culture—art, theater, music, opera, film, fine cuisine and literature abound. An arts scene like this on Florida’s east coast? Surprise, surprise.
>> VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART
As an avid art lover, my heart raced upon seeing The Vero Beach Museum of Art for the first time. This beacon rising in lushly sprawling Riverside Park is the nation’s largest art museum created entirely with private funds. It’s a treat to find a small town that is a monumental home for masterworks of art, and this museum is far more than paintings hung on walls. Vero Beach Museum of Art, along with Riverside Theatre across the street, is Indian River County’s cultural beating heart—the epicenter in a town bursting something here
Everywhere I turned, this laid-back village was growing more interesting. Vero Beach was a seemingly impossible combination of an unassuming beachy town, free of highrises, with quietly sophisticated cultural gifts. It was no wonder the neighbors on my parents’ newfound street in Vero were an intriguing blend: an Academy Awardwinning screenwriter, a World War II Army Colonel and a renowned gospel singer.

with pleasant surprises. Its offerings include international gallery exhibits, sculpture gardens, art classes, well-curated foreign and classic film series in the museum theater, a cafe, library, a gift shop and one of the nation’s longest running art clubs. Vero Beach Museum of Art is reason alone to visit this gem of a town, but as I happily discovered, far from the only one. >> RIVERSIDE THEATRE

rivals the best I’ve seen in much larger cities. The 2016–2017 season spans a wide range of 20th century pop culture—Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, Noel Coward’s Private Lives, Mame, Chicago and Saturday Night Fever. Past seasons have included West Side Story, Grease, Les Misérables and The Producers. If plays and musicals are not your thing, fear not. Riverside’s feast of fun also includes their weekend Comedy Zone evenings featuring rising stand-up stars and the spirited Howl at the Moon dueling piano cabaret shows. And for only five bucks, you can take a “Behind the Scenes” backstage theater tour on select Fridays throughout the year. For families with younger children, there’s an impressive Children’s Theatre adjoining Riverside Theatre featuring youngster-friendly plays and classes. uncommon eateries, boutiques, street festivals and an unusually high number of art galleries featuring the work of brilliant local artists at affordable prices. The first Friday evening of every month, the Downtown Arts District opens its doors (and runs a trolley) for the public to stroll and explore its many offerings. When buying gifts for birthdays or special events, I hightail it to Flametree Clay Art Gallery, which showcases the most unique and beautiful handmade bowls, vases, sculptures, and ornaments—many for less than 100 dollars. In addition to Flametree, other 14th Avenue art destinations include the Artist’s Guild Gallery, Main Street Vero Beach, Gallery 14, Tiger Lily and, for a distinctive splash of Florida history, The Highwaymen Gallery. >> HIGHWAYMEN ART GALLERY
For those of you unfamiliar with The Highwaymen, their legendary story began in the 1960s when 26 black artists, shunned by local galleries, took to their cars to sell their lush oil landscapes for 25 to 35 dollars apiece along Florida’s highways—sometimes while the work was still wet. Today, the paintings sell for thousands of dollars and are exhibited in museums nationwide. Vero’s Highwaymen Gallery helps carry the torch for future generations to experience this now-celebrated style of Florida art. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and souls of its people.” This rings true in Vero Beach, a mellow seaside town where culture is a way of life.

HISTORIC DODGERTOWN
A FANTASTIC FACILITY STEEPED IN LEGENDARY BASEBALL LORE, HISTORIC DODGERTOWN HAS NOW EXPANDED THEIR LEGACY AS A MODERN COMPLEX FOR MANY SPORTS AND EVENTS.
Founded in 1948, Dodgertown occupied a former
Naval Air Base in establishing a permanent Spring Training home for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Creating an environment where both minor and major league players could live and train was a key component, especially as pioneer Jackie Robinson joined the Dodgers in becoming the first African-American to play Major League Baseball. In 1953, a 5,000 seat stadium was built and named in honor of Bud Holman, the area businessman who led the recruitment of the Dodgers to Vero Beach. The facility would evolve over the years to feature two golf courses, a citrus grove, conference center and hotel. From 1948 – 2008, the Dodgers would accumulate 6 World Series Championships and 14 National League pennants. The environment created at Dodgertown that allowed players to stay, train, play and recreate would be credited in building the atmosphere that led to such team success.
In 2008, the Dodgers played their final game in Vero Beach as they moved Spring Training operations to Glendale, Arizona under new Dodgers ownership. With Indian River County owning the facility since 2001 and no tenant, Dodgertown was briefly shuttered. In May 2009, Minor League Baseball began operation as “Vero Beach Sports Village”, utilizing the facility as a team training and tournament destination for youth and amateur sports. After two years of financial duress, former Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley stepped in to take responsibility for the property along with partners Terry O’Malley Seidler, Chan Ho Park and Hideo Nomo. Today “Historic Dodgertown” features a year-round calendar of events. High school and college teams descend to Vero Beach each spring, while travel baseball teams compete all year. Facility partners include professional baseball from Korea, Canadian Football League teams, the FHSAA and FCSAA Women’s Softball State Finals along with soccer, lacrosse, swimming and rowing. CITY GUIDE
Three distinct cities that open to a whole new world. Catch a wave or a top-tier show. Dig into a four-star meal or soft, warm sand. Savor the spa or unique art collections. Spot rare nature or trendy fashion. Whatever your fancy, imagine yourself here, where small town charm meets world-class luxury.
Vero Beach
Ever wonder where the hip crowd from Miami, landlocked beach lovers from Orlando, or tony travelers from Palm Beach go to getaway? Their top pick, eco-chic, Vero Beach. Wondering why? The beaches are uncrowded and windswept; scattered with seashells, shorebirds, and scenic, unobstructed views. Beach-goers here are more likely to encounter a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling, a ghost crab or watch as brown pelicans dive for their dinner. This quaint, friendly seaside town resides at the intersection of green and glamorous. Posh resorts, simple and sophisticated eateries, and one-of-a-kind boutique shops are just steps away from the ocean inspiring travelers to sip, shop, and stroll. Hotels and resorts with rooftops no higher than swaying palm trees make the area irresistible for sun worshippers. The destination’s motto Sunrises, not High-Rises are not marketing gimmicks but a promise to all who visit this 26-mile beach paradise. Vero Beach is different from other Florida coastal towns. On the barrier island you won’t see towering high-rise hotels, t-shirt shops, neon signs or chain restaurants. What you can expect when your beach chair hits the sand – plenty of Florida sunshine without the crowds. Beyond the beaches, the area is rich in eco-excursions and top-tier cultural attractions while offering a relaxed, small-town vibe that is quintessentially Vero Beach, Florida. Downtown Vero has experienced a rebirth of restaurants, shops and

>> TRY A PEACEFUL RUSTIC CAMPING EXPERIENCE
>> TRY CAMPING IN AN RV
If you’ve never tried it, taking a long weekend or week-long vacation in an RV is a delightful experience. RV camping offers the best of both worlds. It’s exciting to get away from normal routines and to be living largely outdoors, but to still have your own kitchen sink and soft bed, among other things. Sometimes it’s fun to go out to dinner at a nearby restaurant and then return to camp to roast marshmallows in the fire. Regardless, making breakfast in camp is the best. A great place to try either style of camping is Sebastian Inlet State Park. The park provides fishing from both its Atlantic and Indian River lagoon; fishing jetties extend from both sides of the inlet into the ocean. Other activities include swimming, enjoying the water views, world class surfing and diving. Wildlife is abundant in the park,

and the casual visitor can see pelicans, ospreys and many species of shorebirds. For a completely different experience, try camping at Middleton’s Fish Camp on the 6,555-acre Blue Cypress Lake. The setting alongside this pristine lake is beautiful. These are just two of several campgrounds in this beautiful county to check out. Each has its own unique flavor.
Seeking a more remote, wilderness-like camping experience - the 22,000-acre St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park is it. These scenic camps are about a 10-minute walk from your car and contain nice tent sites and a fire ring with rustic log benches. It’s a bit more work to carry your equipment and supplies into these primitive sites, but the rewards are well worth it. It’s difficult to describe the peacefulness of being in a wilderness-like setting as the sun rises in the morning over the misty pine woodlands. And somehow, a fresh cup of coffee always tastes better in a pristine, quiet woodland. Author Ken Grudens, Executive Director of the Indian River Land Trust, a land conservation organization in Vero Beach, Florida, is also an avid hiker and sailor and greatly enjoys connecting people with nature.
