HISTORIC DODGERTOWN
A FANTASTIC FACILITY STEEPED IN LEGENDARY BASEBALL LORE, HISTORIC DODGERTOWN HAS NOW EXPANDED THEIR LEGACY AS A MODERN COMPLEX FOR MANY SPORTS AND EVENTS.
Founded in 1948, Dodgertown occupied a former
Naval Air Base in establishing a permanent Spring Training home for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Creating an environment where both minor and major league players could live and train was a key component, especially as pioneer Jackie Robinson joined the Dodgers in becoming the first African-American to play Major League Baseball. In 1953, a 5,000 seat stadium was built and named in honor of Bud Holman, the area businessman who led the recruitment of the Dodgers to Vero Beach. The facility would evolve over the years to feature two golf courses, a citrus grove, conference center and hotel. From 1948 – 2008, the Dodgers would accumulate 6 World Series Championships and 14 National League pennants. The environment created at Dodgertown that allowed players to stay, train, play and recreate would be credited in building the atmosphere that led to such team success.
In 2008, the Dodgers played their final game in Vero Beach as they moved Spring Training operations to Glendale, Arizona under new Dodgers ownership. With Indian River County owning the facility since 2001 and no tenant, Dodgertown was briefly shuttered. In May 2009, Minor League Baseball began operation as “Vero Beach Sports Village”, utilizing the facility as a team training and tournament destination for youth and amateur sports. After two years of financial duress, former Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley stepped in to take responsibility for the property along with partners Terry O’Malley Seidler, Chan Ho Park and Hideo Nomo. Today “Historic Dodgertown” features a year-round calendar of events. High school and college teams descend to Vero Beach each spring, while travel baseball teams compete all year. Facility partners include professional baseball from Korea, Canadian Football League teams, the FHSAA and FCSAA Women’s Softball State Finals along with soccer, lacrosse, swimming and rowing. TAKE IN THE HERITAGE AND HISTORY OF OUR AREA THAT DELVES DEEP INTO CITRUS AND LITERATURE, ARCHAEOLOGY AND UNDISCOVERED GOLD - WE TRULY ARE A TREASURE OF THE COAST OLD MAN VERO SITE
Vero man refers to a set of fossilized human bones found in Vero Beach in 1915 and 1916. The human bones were found in association with those of Pleistocene animals. Recent studies show that the Vero human bones are from the Pleistocene, and are the largest collection of human remains from the Pleistocene found in North America. In 2014, excavation began in partnership with Mercyhurst Archeological Institute. Tours and volunteer opportunities are available at the excavation site. MCLARTY TREASURE MUSEUM
This museum is located on the site of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet salvaging camp; a site designated as a National Historical Landmark. In the early 1960s, the wrecks were rediscovered and salvage operations recommenced. Modern salvaging techniques have yielded new discoveries that continue into the present. The Museum is dedicated to telling the continuing story of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet. Original artifacts are on display including gear from the galleons, weapons, and treasure. ENHANCING AND ENRICHING The mission of The Peter W. Busch Family Foundation is to support and enhance the community in which it was created over 30 years ago. Peter W. Busch believes in supporting initiatives that improve the quality of health, education and families throughout the Treasure Coast. In order to generate funds for the Foundation, we host two major events per year: A Professional Bull Riding Competition at the Saint Lucie County Fair Grounds, and the Wild Game Dinner at Adams Ranch. All proceeds go to the Peter W. Busch Family Foundation in order to partner with over 75 different causes and charitable organizations in our community.
