Wytheville (pronounced WITH-vill) was given its current name in 1839 after being founded as Evansham in 1792. Named for the first signer of the Declaration of Independence for Virginia - George Wythe, it was selected as the county seat of Wythe County (1790). At the time, it was the junction of two great western roads, the Ingles Ferry and the Peppers Ferry trails. Today, two federal highways, Interstates 77 & 81, bring tens of thousands of travelers daily to experience this charming Southern town.

This guide contains information regarding attractions, lodging and dining, history, entertainment, events, and outdoor recreation. For additional information, please contact the Wytheville Convention & Visitors Bureau directly. It is our goal to make your trip planning simple and your visit memorable.

Blue Ridge Bobcats

Don’t panic – we’re talking about Hockey. The Blue Ridge Bobcats have taken the ice in their inaugural season in the Federal Prospects Hockey League. Wytheville has quickly become a hockey town while cheering on the Bobcats as they’ve battled teams from Detroit to Mississippi attempting to bring the Commissioner’s Cup back to their den. This high action sport is guaranteed to have you on your feet and beating on the glass.

Inn at Foster Falls, (Featuring 1887 Dining)

After half a century a historic Wythe County hotel has reopened. Located inside New River Trail State Park, the Inn at Foster Falls, a full-service property, offers 10 luxe guest rooms, banquet/meeting facilities and large two-story porches overlooking the New River. Originally opened in 1887 as a hotel, this stately structure became an industrial girl’s school in 1914, then a co-ed orphanage until 1962. Sitting vacant for more than 50 years since, this fully renovated gem is sparkling once again, welcoming guests.

The historic Millwald Theatre has been fully restored, right down to the original neon marquee, and is now hosting Grammy nominees and Academy Award-winning films. Originally built in 1928, the Millwald was “Virginia’s longest continuously running theatre” when it closed it’s doors in 2005. Reopened in December of 2022, it’s played host to singer Pam Tillis, comedian Henry Cho, the Drifters, and Devin Allman right in the heart of Downtown Wytheville.

THE BIG PENCIL

Visitors make it a “point” to see this Wytheville Main Street landmark. The late John Campbell Findlay, (original owner of Wytheville Office Supply, whose store front is home to this impressive feature), had the pencil constructed in the early 1960’s. Made of metal, it is approximately 30 feet long & has had many facelifts over the years in order to keep the structure in pristine condition. The pencil has also been featured in the Washington Post’s syndicated comic strip “Zippy” by Bill Griffith.

WYTHEVILLE LOVEWORKS DISPLAY

In the center of downtown at 260 West Monroe Street is Wytheville’s LOVEworks display. Part of a statewide initiative to strengthen awareness of the “Virginia is for Lovers” brand, communities design their LOVE to showcase the significance of their area. Wytheville’s letters depict aspects of history that have impacted the community. The L represents the influence of the railroad. The O showcases a hot air balloon, such as the one used in our elevated water tank in honor of the annual Chautauqua Festival. V depicts the two interstates that cross here, I-77 and I-81, as well as our branding theme of “Wytheville...There’s Only One.” E honors the history of baseball in this community as it was played in Withers Park behind the LOVE display. It’s a great place to snap a photo. Stop by and feel the LOVE. Please tag us in your photos @ VisitWytheville, #VisitWytheville, #LoveVA.

This mural located downtown honors the life of Wytheville native and United States First Lady Edith Bolling Wilson. The 100-foot mural, titled “From Wytheville to The White House,” features eight significant scenes drawing from events of Mrs. Wilson’s life, including her birth, Native American ancestry, life as First Lady, her last visit to Wytheville at the age of 88, and her death in 1961. It was created by artist, Andrew Williams.

HOPE MURAL AT OPEN DOOR CAFE

Created by local artist, Jen Otey, this mural is meant to be both bold and inspiring. Entitled, “2020 Pandemic Prayer for a Peaceful Transformation”, the piece was based on the 1861 Emily Dickinson poem, “Hope is the Thing with Feathers”, suggesting that hope is a bird within us all which keeps singing, even through difficulty.

CRYSTAL SPRINGS RECREATION AREA

Wytheville is home to countless outdoor recreation opportunities, with 1,800 acres of townowned property. Crystal Springs Recreation Area is just three miles from Downtown Wytheville and is surrounded by the 7500-acre Big Survey Wildlife Management Area (managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.) The thirteen miles of hiking and mountain biking trails range in difficulty from beginner to advanced. The Terrain Park gives mountain bikers a fun place to practice on balance beams, teeter totters, rock gardens, log crossings, and other obstacles. The history of the property that make up Crystal Springs includes family farms and logging land. Piles of rocks that were cleared from the fields by farmers still stand along Woodpecker Run Trail as testament to how difficult farming in the mountains could be. The Short Cut Trail and the southern portion of the Boundary Trail follow an old wagon road that crossed Lick Mountain. Stories tell of moonshiners using this road to move their product out of the sight of law enforcement. In the 1930’s, the Town of Wytheville purchased the land to preserve the watershed, which flowed to the town, and to build a water reservoir. The reservoir remains and is approximately 60 square feet and 8 feet deep, although years of erosion have filled it with sediment. Hike the Crystal Springs Loop Trail to see the remnants of the reservoir. Along the Waterline Trail you can see the sections of the water pipe that carried water from the reservoir down the valley.

Directions from Wytheville:

US 21 South for 3 miles, turn Left onto Pump Hollow Road (684).

Follow Pump Hollow Road 1 mile to the parking area.

Designated a National Recreation Trail, the New River Trail State Park consists of 57-miles of linear trail, covering 765-acres which follows abandoned railroad right-of-ways. Gliding along the scenic and historic New River, one of the oldest rivers in the world and among only a handful that flows north, for 39 of those miles, the trail passes through four counties and one city. Offering the gentlest of slopes, the trail is perfect for visitors of all ages, and draws a variety of hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Areas within and surrounding the park, such as the Foster Falls section, delight visitors with additional outdoor adventure opportunities like canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

In order to extend your exploration of the park, primitive camping options are available and for those who like their overnights to be a bit more comfortable, the park also houses the Inn at Foster Falls, a newly restored 1887 boutique hotel, complete with dinner service and suites. Points of interest throughout the trail include two tunnels, one running 135 feet long and the other 193, carved from the limestone rock faces jutting down towards the river bed below, three major bridges climbing upwards of 670, 951 and 1,089 feet above the ground and a historic shot tower used over 200 years ago to form ammunition which is also open to the public seasonally for those wishing to climb the 75-foot structure.

Wytheville... There’s Only One! Our branding theme because there is not another town named Wytheville in the entire world.

Named for George Wythe, the first person from Virginia to sign the Declaration of Independence and the first American law professor who taught Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe.

Fun Fact: Interstates 81 and 77 run together in a wrong-way concurrency for approximately ten miles, meaning you are traveling on I 77 Northbound and I81 Southbound at the same time while actually traveling due west.

Wytheville is home to Virginia’s Smallest Church. The completely volunteer built structure is only 12’x16’ in size and serves as a quiet place of faith and reflection for all those who visit, with the occasional wedding ceremony held within its walls.

A 155 1/2 ft. tall hot air balloon, complete with basket, stands alongside interstates 81 and 77 welcoming travelers to Wytheville. This roadside icon is a cleverly disguised functioning 500,000 gallon elevated water tower.

Home to Big Walker Lookout, Virginia’s oldest privately-owned attraction. Featuring a country store showcasing Virginia artisans, authors and local musicians and a 100 foot observation tower allowing a panoramic view of five states.

At the turn of the 20th century, between 1910 and 1930, Rural Retreat, Virginia was hailed as “The Cabbage Capital of the World” thanks to the agricultural richness and fertility of this former frontier settlement.

For over 50 years travelers have made it a “point” to see the largest pencil in Virginia. Hanging on Main Street above Wytheville Office Supply, this 30 foot icon has been featured in the Washington Post comic strip “Zippy”.

Stephen F. Austin, The Father of Texas, was born in Wythe County in 1793 in a small mining community now known as Austinville. A monument to Austin stands along the New River near his birthplace.

Wytheville was the boyhood home of William Gibson, award-winning Science Fiction author and “Father of Cyberspace”. His 1982 short-story collection entitled Burning Chrome marked the first appearance of the term.

In 1987, UFO sightings above Wytheville began to be a regular occurrence. Much press attention and many investigations led to an entire television episode of Unsolved Mysteries being dedicated to this Wytheville phenomenon.

“Local food” is categorized as any edible products grown and harvested within 100 miles of your location and

benefits:

• Locally grown foods have more flavor, as they are picked/consumed at peak ripeness instead of being harvested early to compensate for shipping and distribution.

• Locally grown foods have more nutrients, as they have a shorter stretch of time between being harvested and being consumed which means they retain more of their nutritional value.

• Purchasing locally grown foods/products supports small businesses as opposed to big box stores, keeping local farmers, growers and business owners’ doors open and able to reinvest into their businesses and the local community, as well as supporting the environment

• The fewer steps there are between you and your food the less opportunity there is for contamination, promoting a much safer food supply, as well as knowing where your food came from, who grew it and how the crops were raised/harvested.
