A Taste of Yass Valley Yass Valley has all the best ingredients for a country escape, close to Canberra.

Yass Valley is a thriving rural region, much-loved for its strong sense of community, spectacular natural scenery, innovative local producers, and simpler country lifestyle – all on the doorstep of Canberra. Here’s why residents and visitors feel connected to Yass Valley: “I love the colours in spring and autumn...the arts...the people. I love how creative the community is.” - Marie, Yass River “We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be raising our children in such a fabulous and inclusive community. There is truly no place we would rather be.” - Lauren, Yass I love visiting Yass because I like the town, the surrounding areas and the people are great, so laid-back and relaxing and so much to see and do. - Howard, Perth W.A.

Our heritage Traditionally inhabited by the Aboriginal Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri tribes, Yass Valley features many areas of Aboriginal cultural significance, including Oak Hill, Hollywood and Hatton’s Corner. In 1821, Hamilton Hume was the first non-indigenous person to see the Yass Plains. Cooma Cottage in Yass was home to Hume for more than 30 years. Today, Hume’s name is synonymous throughout Australia as one of our country’s most well-known colonial explorers.

Heritage & Arts With a rich Aboriginal and European heritage, Yass Valley’s rural towns and villages are home to many historic buildings and landmarks that characterise our region and provide a magnet for artisans, creators and collectors. Brilliant Binalong Binalong, just 25 minutes from Yass, is famous for its connection to one of Australia’s best-known poets, A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson, who went to primary school in the village. Located on the outskirts of town is the intriguing and well-preserved grave of bushranger, Johnny Gilbert.

The only purpose-built motor museum in Australia, it also features a restoration workshop where Stuart works on wrecks sourced from unlikely places, including paddocks! Visitors can stay and enjoy the shady garden area, with barbecue and picnic facilities.

The fascinating history lesson continues at the Binalong Motor Museum, where keen car collector and restorer, Stuart Saunders, has rare motor vehicles and memorabilia on display.

With classic, country-town charm, Binalong is home to some outstanding examples of colonial architecture, like the 1847’s Cobb & Co. staging post, giving visitors the chance to step back in time and admire the quality and craftmanship in their construction.

The eclectic collection includes a 1920s Bugatti, which took him 10 years to refurbish.

The simpler life in Binalong is a natural fit for creators and makers. The village has a strong artistic community, including

Stories from the vines Helm Wines Established in 1973, Helm Wines of Murrumbateman is one of the region’s first commercial wineries. It was given a fivestar rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion in 2012, thanks to the father-daughter team of skilful winemakers, Ken and Stephanie Helm.

Olleyville at Shaw Vineyard

Four Winds Vineyard

Opened in September 2017, Olleyville at Shaw Vineyard Estate features good, simple food and a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Formerly Flint in the Vines, the reimagined restaurant retains the much-loved wood-fired pizza oven, complemented by new community-style share plates.

Micro-winery, Four Winds Vineyard, has been attracting global kudos for the recent redesign of its wine labels – a series of wind-themed photographs. Among the awards, the brand was named overall supreme champion at the 2017 Drinks International Wine Design Challenge.

The restaurant, named after the mid-19th century woolproducing property that was taken over by the Shaw family and turned into a vineyard in 1998, has a responsible-farming philosophy and sources Australian and local produce for its rustic menu.

In 2006, acclaimed Australian director and cinematographer, Geoff Burton, applied his creative thinking to a different kind of project – making wine. In search of a wine-producing region with similar characteristics to the Rhone Valley in France, he purchased a property in Gundaroo.

34 Isabel Drive, Murrumbateman | olleyville.com.au Under son Matt Burton’s management and winemaking, Gundog Estate is consistently awarded a five-star winery rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. The cellar door, in stone-made, restored stables, is adjacent to Grazing Restaurant.

Helm Wines continues to produce world-class vintages today with the support of Stephanie, who has gone on to start her own winery, The Vintner’s Daughter, with Benjamin Osborne. The property is in Murrumbateman, next door to the renowned Clonakilla and Eden Road Wines.

Gundog Estate is named after the family’s cocker spaniel, Karl Marx (the gundog), whose skills are better suited to modelling for the brand’s label. The name also has great synergy with Gundaroo, and is fitting for a winery that produces quality wines that tell a story of the season and region.

Bowning

In 2017, Sutton celebrated the 150-year anniversary of the gazetting of the village. Traditionally, the area has been dependent on horses, cattle and sheep. Today, it is home to alpaca farms, wineries, olive groves, and The Baker at Sutton. Close to Canberra, it’s an attractive destination for day-trippers and tree-changers.

One of the earliest settlements, Bowning is home to a relaxed, artistic community. It lies at the foot of the 796-metre Bowning Hill, where its past is showcased in the old Troopers Cottage, Cobb & Co. Coaching Station and two beautiful churches. Rollonin Café, located in a lovingly reproduced slab hut, is packed with fascinating memorabilia. For an intimate country bar experience, visit Bowning Pub. Call in to Mayfield Mews for a coffee, and browse the gorgeous gift shop and garden centre.

One of the first explorers to the area was Charles Throsby, who wandered through the Sutton area in 1920 looking for the Murrumbidgee River. The village was first surveyed in 1853, and when gold was discovered 30 years later, the population soared.

Next door, Mayfield House is said to have hosted Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson as they disputed their differing opinions on the Australian bush, famously reported through the press as the ‘Bulletin Debate’. Other highlights include Bowning Antique Centre, Clearview Alpaca Farm and The Crisp Galleries, home to glass artist Peter Crisp’s magnificent pieces.

Lake Burrinjuck, also known as Burrinjuck Dam, is a destination for recreational activities and outdoor adventures. Attracting 250,000 tourists each year, the 75-hectare state park is a haven for watersports, bushwalking, birdwatching and fishing. Murrumbateman A former gold-mining town, Murrumbateman is the focus of the Canberra district cool-climate wine region. The village has a growing collective of winemakers and producers, many now achieving national and international acclaim. Every winery, cellar door and restaurant provides a unique and interesting experience for visitors.

The village’s sense of community is reflected in its busy program of events, including the annual Murrumbateman Moving Feast and Murrumbateman Field Days both in October. Other highlights include the Murrumbateman Farmers Market (second and fourth Saturdays each month) and Robyn Rowe’s chocolate shop.

Queanbeyan, Braidwood & Bungedore Nestled on the NSW/ACT border and only 10km from Canberra’s CBD, Queanbeyan is a vibrant and culturallydiverse regional city with a population of more than 40,000. Known for its strong arts community, including The Q Performing Arts Centre, Queanbeyan is also a fantastic gateway to Canberra’s attractions, the Snowy Mountains and the picturesque NSW South Coast. Along the Kings Highway between Canberra and the South Coast, you will find undulating countryside and bushlandwhich is home to the historic towns of heritage-listed Braidwood (est. in 1839) and Bungendore (est. in 1837).

44

YA S S VA L L E Y. C O M . A U

Traditionally cattle and sheep farming communities, the area is now popular with tree changers and commuters, artists, horse lovers, and local food producers. Both popular weekend destinations, Braidwood and Bungendore also feature packed events calendars, including Braidwood’s Airing of the Quilts in November, the mid-winter Truffle Central event, and biannual Two Fires Festival of Arts and Activism. In Bungendore, celebrations include the annual Harvest Festival in March. For all tourist information, call the Queanbeyan Visitor Information Centre on (02) 6285 6307 or www.visitqueanbeyan.com.au

Centred on the towns of Boorowa, Harden, Young and the village of Jugiong, the Hilltops Region is full of relaxed, friendly country experiences for our visitors. As one of the most diverse food-producing regions in Australia, cherries are a local hero along with a wide range of stone fruit.

The beauty of the region is underpinned by rich agricultural soils, producing fields of yellow canola in the spring, and some of the best broadacre cropping in Australia. Visitors and locals are spoilt for choice, with locally-made jams, chutneys, pies and condiments on sale at local shops, cafés and farmers’ markets. The Region is also rapidly emerging as one of the most exciting viticultural regions in Australia. The high altitude, coupled with the dry summer and autumn, provides excellent ripening conditions.

This and the rich, red soils enables the production of wines with great intensity of flavour and finesse. The Region has a burgeoning number of key annual events, including the Irish Woolfest in Boorowa, the Kite Festival in Harden, Lambing Flat Chinese Festival, National Cherry Festival in Young, as well as seasonal food and wine events showcasing the abundant local produce.
