Yass Valley Yass Valley is shaped by rolling hills and natural beauty, a landscape that showcases the seasons like a well-hung canvas. A kaleidoscope of yellow, orange and red in autumn, apparent in the gently falling leaves that line the roads into many of our towns and villages. Winter offers crisp mornings, best enjoyed with a stroll along the banks of one of our many waterways, where the lifting fog reveals a backdrop of blue and green. The countryside comes alive in spring, decorated by robust crops and paddocks teeming with adventurous lambs and calves, offering endless entertainment to passers-by. As the mercury rises and summer rolls in, scorched fields and wandering wild-life reminds us what it truly means to be Australian.
Public Art Dotted throughout Yass Valley are colourful murals, sculptures and creations that celebrate our resident’s artistic flair. From alleyways lined with student artwork, to sculpture filled paddocks and metal flowers adorning the Barton Highway, you won’t go far without a chance to be inspired by our local talent. Share your experience #YassValley #VisitYassValley @VisitYassValley
More Than Picture Perfect Cafe on Queen, Binalong
Yass Valley offers endless shareable moments through unique food and wine experiences, interactions with inspiring artisans, immersion in rich Australian heritage or simply by enjoying one of the many festivals and events held across the region.
The People You Meet These experiences are made even better through the people you meet along the way. Generations of farming families that fill the local football teams, eager for a cold beer and a banter at the pub after a game. The renowned chef turned baker who moved from the city to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle. The café owner nurturing others through salad bowls and freshly squeezed juice. Families of winemakers, pottery crafters, artists, producers and chocolatiers, all eager to share their passion with you. These are the people who make Yass Valley the wonderful destination that it is.
This is Country Living.

The natural wonderland accessed via the holiday parks offer endless opportunities for those who love spending time in the outdoors, with overnight accommodation and camping options, as well as swimming and picnicking spots aplenty.
Fast Facts
Burrinjuck meaning is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'mountain with a rugged top' Burrinjuck Village was established to accommodate the workers on the Dam in 1908 Population: 19 Distance: 53km southwest of Yass
Dam, That’s Big Burrinjuck was originally known as Booren Yiack, changing over time to Barren Jack and the present-day Burrinjuck. Lake Burrinjuck also known as Burrinjuck Dam, was the first major dam built for irrigation in NSW and when construction began in 1909 it was the fourth largest dam in the world. The dam covers an area larger than 8,000 football fields and holds almost twice as much water as Sydney Harbour. More than a natural playground, Burrinjuck Dam supports agriculture across 660,000 hectares and supplies stock and domestic needs, as well as environmental flows, flood mitigation and hydroelectricity. While Burrinjuck Road provides glimpses of the dam wall and spillway, there is no public access to the wall itself.

Barney's Cafe, Bookham
Bookham A SMALL VILLAGE ON THE HUME HIGHWAY FULL OF COUNTRY HOSPITALITY MAKING THE PERFECT PITSTOP FOR YOUR TRAVELS THROUGHOUT YASS VALLEY. St Columbus Church, Bookham
The village of Bookham and the surrounding grazing land was once known as Bogolong. The name change is believed to have occurred in 1839, attributed to Lady Jane Franklin, wife of John Franklin, the Lieutenant Governor of van Diemen’s Land. Lady Franklin stayed in the area during her historic overland journey from Port Phillip to Sydney. Other sources suggest Bookham is believed to be a shortening of ‘Cumbookambookinah’, the name initially given to the village. It is said that childhood memories of the races at Bogolong Racetrack inspired one of Banjo Paterson’s well known poems. These days, visitors can stop in at Barney’s Café for a big dose of country hospitality. Serving up a varied menu of freshly made favourites including burgers, soups, sandwiches and quiche, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options available. Don’t forget to grab a hot coffee and a sweet treat.

The famous shoot-out and resulting demise of Bushranger ‘Flash Jack’ Johnny Gilbert is depicted in The Binalong Mural in Pioneer Park, painted by Archibald Prize winner, Janet Dawson. Banjo Paterson, who moved to the area when he was five, immortalised Gilbert in his poem ‘How Gilbert Died’. Boasting more than 630 armed hold-ups, Gilbert now rests in a marked grave on the outskirts of town. Gilbert’s grave is easily found, along with other interesting facts, as part of the Binalong Bushrangers Walk, available from the Yass Valley Information Centre and businesses around town.

Heritage RICH WITH ABORIGINAL AND EUROPEAN HERITAGE, YASS VALLEY’S RURAL TOWNS AND VILLAGES ARE HOME TO MANY HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND LANDMARKS THAT CHARACTERISE OUR REGION AND PROVIDE A MAGNET FOR ARTISANS, CREATORS AND COLLECTORS. Traditional Owners The Yass Valley has traditionally been inhabited by the Aboriginal Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri Tribes. The Ngunnawal tribe covered the area which is present day Canberra, extending out into the majority of the Yass Valley region. Wiradjuri covered a large portion of NSW, including an area within the western edge of the present-day Yass Valley. Yass Valley Council acknowledges the traditional owners of the land - the Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri. A two-hour Yass Highlights tour, delivered by Dhawura Tours, provides an introduction into Aboriginal interpretation and the cultural significance of the Yass River and bush foods found in the area.
European Settlement European settlement of the Yass Valley began as early as the 1820’s, following expeditions by Hume and Hovell, and Throsby and Wild. Land throughout the Yass Valley was settled relatively early, due to its location on the road to Port Phillip (Melbourne) and the quality of the surrounding land.
Rags to Riches Early fortunes within the region were influenced by the success of agriculture, notably the Fine Wool Industry, and the proximity to the Main Southern Railway Line and the Hume Highway. Yass & District Historical Society and the Gundaroo & District Historical Society preserve a treasure trove of information on history of the Yass Valley.
A Creatives Playground A love of fine things spread throughout the region, transforming Yass Valley into an artisan’s wonderland. Creative seeds planted by the likes of Banjo Paterson and more recently Kim Nelson, live on through locals, who gather in eclectic groups such as Yass Arts, Yass Repertory Society and A Brush with Poetry. Artists and makers proudly share their creations with visitors through retail outlets, galleries and studios throughout the region. Spend a day discovering inspiring artists at play at Peter Minson Glass Art, Tootsie Gallery Café, Creators Nest, Hillgrove Pottery Studio and Gallery and Old Saint Luke’s Studio.
An Inspiring Blend of Old and New.
