The hugely popular St Nicholas Fair returns with a sparkly dusting of festive fun and warming activities. Be the first to visit the fair on the festive first night, when the Christmas festivities officially begin, on 14 November. The best way to start your #Onlyinyork Christmas experience is with a stroll along Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square where cosy, wintry alpine chalets line the streets. Each chalet is selling unique products with everything from handmade gifts to delicious tasty treats.
Listen out for the buskers and choirs performing carols and feel good yuletide classics on St Sampson's Square. Don’t miss the Shambles Market and Food Court, where you can pick up that unique present and treat yourself to a snack. Street food is on the menu, take your taste buds on a journey around the world, with everything from Moroccan to Italian food and everything in between. Nestled away in the Shambles Market you’ll find Yorkshire produce
from crafters and makers showcased at the Made in Yorkshire Yuletide Village. Laughter and cheers echo around King's Square, home to an old fashioned carousel, a great place to have some fun with the family. St Helen's Square has had a festive makeover and been renamed Gingerbread Square. Mansion House has been transformed into an enchanted wonderland, enjoy tasty treats, mulled wine and get creative in their kitchens.

Ruby
The King of gems
Ruby - the symbol of passion and adoration which makes ruby an ideal romantic gift and a perfect engagement ring. They are a hardy and durable stone, perfect for daily wear and special occasions. They are also an extremely valuable gemstone, commanding the highest price of any other coloured gemstone in the jewellery industry. Rubies have an intense, red glow. Their colour is the most significant factor affecting a ruby’s value as well as rubies which are free of eye-visible inclusions. ‘Blood ruby’ is another symbol of ruby’s colour or ‘Pigeon blood’ red ruby with a soft, glowing, red fluorescence. Chromium is the trace element which causes the ruby’s redness and gives the stone its vibrancy in colour. Rubies were sourced from Myanmar (formerly Burma), the legendary valley of rubies. Now also found in Mozambique, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

Twixmas In need of some rest and relaxation over the Christmas break after the hustle and bustle of the festivities? Or are you looking for activities to keep yourself and the family entertained until the New Year's Eve celebrations? We have some great ideas and inspiration to fill the ‘Twixmas’ gap. Many of the Christmas attractions and events across the city continue until the New Year. Pop on your skates, work off some Christmas
calories and enjoy the biggest outdoor ice rink in the North of England at Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland. Be wowed at Van Gogh - The Immersive Experience where the artist’s famous works are brought to life. Explore one of the many iconic city attractions, marvel at the legends of the railway at the National Railway Museum or experience family friendly spooks at the York Dungeon. If you’re looking for a challenge try to solve the codes and
puzzles with your family and friends at the GR8escape live escape rooms. For some old-fashioned festive fun the pantomimes at York Theatre Royal and the Grand Opera House also run into January and provide endless entertainment. Why not stop off on your way at Thor’s Tipi for a festive tipple? If you need to walk off the Christmas excess, stretch your legs with one of the many festive walks around the city. The Museum Gardens provide the venue for a delightful stroll and the city walls provide a bird’s eye view of York and are only closed on Christmas Day.

If you are travelling by car, York’s Park & Ride service offers the simplest solution to getting into the city.
Six sites are located around the ring road, offering hundreds of free and secure parking spaces at each site. Once you’re parked up, just hop on one of our modern buses, which are all equipped with free wi-fi and are adapted for pushchairs and wheelchair users. For the perfect family day out, up to three children can travel absolutely free when accompanied by a fare paying adult! This includes bus pass holders paying the £1.10 concessionary fare, who
can also take three children aboard free of charge. Buses run every 10-15 minutes from early morning and throughout the day, running later on Thursdays, every 15 mins until 9.30pm on routes 3, 8 & 59 and later all week (about 22:30) on services 2, 7 & 9. Concessionary Travel Pass holders pay a reduced fare of £1.10 when boarding at a Park & Ride site after 9am on Mondays to Fridays and at any time on Saturdays,
Sundays and bank holidays. There is no charge when boarding at any other bus stops, including the city centre, at these times. Late Night Shopping There will be late night shopping in York on Thursday and Friday evenings from 14 November right up to 20 December. On services 3, 8 & 59 the last bus on Thursdays will be 21:30. Services 2, 7 & 9 will run as per the current timetable. There will be no special arrangements for Fridays.
