HOW IT WORKS Just show your pass at your choice of attractions: • Your YorkPass is “activated” the first time it is used at an attraction – until then it is entirely open, meaning if your visit to York should be unfortunately delayed or cancelled, you can simply hold onto the YorkPass for another occasion. • Once you activate it at an attraction, it is then valid for the rest of that day – note that the Pass works on calendar days, not in 24-hour units, so don’t use it for the first time at 5pm or you won’t get the best value out of it. • For 3-day passes, the second and third days can be taken any day in the five days following your first day (for a total of six days); again, the pass will activate for your extra day the first time it is used at an attraction. 2-day passes are valid for two consecutive days. • Every Pass has a “purse value”, a maximum spend. This is to avoid the possibility of fraud and is set high enough that it should not be a factor for you. the purse values are listed below and in the full Terms & Conditions on page 73. • Each Pass may only be used once per attraction. • The Discount Vouchers in the guidebook offer a wide range of offers and discounts at a variety of York businesses. These discounts are available for passholders for the full six days of a 2- or 3-day pass, regardless of when the second and third day are used. • This guidebook is published in one edition and all information is correct at the time of going to press (March 2016). We endeavour to publish updates where applicable but please consult www.yorkpass.com or contact Visit York (see facing page) for the latest information.
Please Note: The YorkPass is non-transferable. No refunds or replacements can be offered for lost or stolen cards. The YorkPass provides you with entries to listed attractions for 1, 2 or 3 days as purchased up to the following full public entry values: 1 Day Adult £70, 1 Day Child £40, 2 Day Adult £140, 2 Day Child £80, 3 Day Adult £210, 3 Day Child £120. For full Terms & Conditions see page 73.

WELCOME TO YORK “Imagine a place full of things that no other city has” For nearly 2,000 years, York has been welcoming visitors from around the world – and now it’s your turn. Walk in the footsteps of Roman emperors, Viking kings, Norman conquerors and Victorian innovators as you discover how the city shaped history and how it remains an exciting place to be. With your YorkPass you have chosen the best way to visit our wonderful city, and we are looking forward to welcoming you. York has more world-class sights and attractions per square mile than any other city in the UK, all within an easy walk of each other along atmospheric streets. There are world-famous sights such as the majestic York Minster and the cobbled street the Shambles, the reconstructed Victorian street at the York Castle Museum and the absorbing National Railway Museum, home to two of the most famous steam locomotives in the world; Mallard and the Flying Scotsman. York is also the birthplace of favourite treats such as the Kit-Kat, Chocolate Orange and Polos, and this heritage is celebrated at York’s Chocolate Story. York’s also a great place to wander, looking for those little off-the-beaten track places and quirky shops and attractions – from the Roman Bath museum in the cellar of a pub to the Arts & Crafts splendour of Goddards House and Gardens, the Terry family’s old home, or the stark realities of York Cold War Bunker. After all that you might fancy a sit down and a cup of tea – or something more substantial. Turn to the back of this book for discounts at cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets, and on unique souvenirs and gifts. After the sun goes down, try one of the atmospheric ghost tours, or just relax in one of York’s many traditional pubs with a local ale from York Brewery. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy your stay in York.
Enjoy discounted tours and entertainment with the discount vouchers beginning on page 44, and turn to the back of the guidebook for some great offers on eating, drinking and shopping!

Treasurer’s House is not as it appears. At one time divided into three houses, in the late 1900s Frank Green created his version of a historic house to showcase his collection. See both sides of the story as he demolished parts of the house not to his liking, yet transformed a house of declining fortunes into a handsome property with lavish interiors. Join free tours on selected days with the Below Stairs café and the garden always free to enter.

FREE THINGS TO DO IN YORK Watching your wallet and seeking free things to do during your York stay? There are plenty of ways to see the city on a shoestring: City Walls See York from above when you wander along the walls. First built by the Romans in 71AD and covering over two miles, they have guarded the city through some of its most tumultuous history. Around 2.5 million walk the walls each year and it takes approximately two hours to complete a full circuit. There are five main bars or gateways, one Victorian gateway, one postern (a small gateway) and 45 towers – check each off as you go!
York Cat Trail If you are a cat lover you are in for a treat when you follow the York Cat Trail. The furry felines are part of the city’s history; statues have been dotted on buildings around York for centuries and were originally created to frighten away mice and rats. Follow the trail from its beginning outside York Glass – home to York Lucky Cats – in the Shambles and look closely above doorways and down ginnels until you have found them all.
National Railway Museum The largest railway museum in the world is located here in York and features a fascinating insight into the world of trains. From the social history of rail transport to the carriages that transported royalty, the design of the Eurostar or the arrival of the well-travelled and much-loved Paddington Bear, you will find it all here. Entry is free to everyone.

Museum Gardens A serene space in the centre of the city, York Museum Gardens offer visitors a lush, idyllic spot in which to pause for thought. Bordered by the City Walls, River Ouse and the awe-inspiring ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, this is parkland that is steeped in history. The early English and Romanesque ruins dominate the gardens and the other architectural spots within the site are connected to the abbey: the 12th century Gatehall was once the main entrance to the abbey’s grounds, while the medieval half-timbered Hospitium alongside the river was once a guesthouse for abbey visitors.
Guided Walking Tours Association of Voluntary Guides Free city walking tours leave every day at 10.15am, 2.15pm and 6.45pm in the summer from outside the York Art Gallery, Exhibition Square. JOURNEY BEYOND THE CITY WALLS WITH A YORK PASS York is situated amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain, and your YorkPass is your key to great days out beyond the city walls. Some of the greatest stately homes in the country are in Yorkshire, and two are included in your Pass and easily reached from the city: Castle Howard – known to generations of TV viewers as “Brideshead” – and the hidden gem that is Beningbrough Hall with its fine portrait collection and formal gardens. And don’t miss Scampston Walled Garden near Malton too while you’re in the area. New for 2016-17 we have included four attractions in the delightful Yorkshire market town of Helmsley. Set in the beautiful but little-known Ryedale area, Helmsley is a real find. Helmsley Castle, Helmsley Walled Garden and the National Birds of Prey Centre are all in the centre of town while the ruined Byland Abbey is about seven miles away – a short drive or bus ride, or a beautiful walk through the North York Moors National Park. Further into the park, the market town of Pickering serves as one terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway – 18 miles (29km) of stunning scenery with

main-line steam train services leading to the coastal town of Whitby; landingplace of Dracula and the spot where explorer Captain James Cook learned his trade – the Captain Cook Memorial Museum is located in his old house. History comes to life at Eden Camp, a former Prisoner of War camp converted into an absorbing museum of life in Britain during the Second World War with exhibits housed in the original prison huts. Meanwhile, just outside the city you will find the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington, a former wartime airbase that was uniquely fully staffed and operated by the Free French Air Force. As well as preserving the historic control tower and buildings, the museum houses original and replica aircraft from the very earliest gliders to supersonic jets. Then there’s the famous York Maze which is cut in a different amazing shape every summer and the Yorkshire Museum of Farming celebrating the history of this vital industry, and particularly the efforts of the Land Girls during World War 2. We’ve put together some ideas for great days out in the area whether you’re driving or using public transport – check out our website www.yorkpass.com or ask in the Visitor Information Centre for the latest version.
