This 2,000-year-old city, with links to the Romans & Vikings and Railways & Victorians, has so many stories to share with you. These can be uncovered at the world-class museums, art galleries and heritage attractions across the city and at some of the most immersive heritage events and festivals that take place each year.

Countryfile Live at Castle Howard For the first time BBC Countryfile Live will venture North and make Castle Howard its home from the 1518 August! Highlights will include the Village Green, the Countryfile Experience featuring the programme's presenters, the Wildlife Zone and Farming in Action. This new event will represent the finest of the northern countryside and celebrate regional farming, guaranteed to be one of summer’s best days out.
The Cookery School at The Grand The Cookery School at The Grand, located at the only 5 star hotel in Yorkshire is set to open in March 2019. Offering express, half and full-day classes on everything from international cuisines and seafood, to how to master bread making and prepare the perfect dinner party. With daily sessions, and even kids classes available, the Cookery School will deliver unique and immersive experiences, right in the heart of the city.
Follow the Vikings Roadshow Don’t miss two special performances of the Follow the Vikings Roadshow taking place on Saturday 2 March - a unique celebration of the cultural and historic impact of the Vikings. The touring show which started in Poland in August 2017 includes specially commissioned performances by contemporary artists from across Europe including actors, musicians, dancers and film makers, creating a stunning visual celebration.
York Theatre Royal 275th Anniversary York’s historic Theatre Royal will be celebrating its 275th anniversary this year. The building, which dates back to the 18th century, is a patchwork quilt of many periods - originally built over a 12th century hospital with changes giving the theatre a Georgian interior, Victorian façade, 1960s concrete addition and now the recent transformation into a building fit to serve a 21st century audience.
Bettys Centenary In 2019 Bettys celebrates a rather big birthday: 100 years of delighting customers with delicious cakes, chocolates and exclusive teas and coffees. Bettys will celebrate this landmark birthday with a series of 14 events in their six Yorkshire branches, including talks from their archivist and from family members plus new celebratory cookery courses too.
New Community Stadium Opening in summer 2019 is a brand new addition to York’s sporting offer. This 8,000 all-seat community sports stadium will be home to York City FC and York City Knights. The site will feature an IMAX cinema with 13 screens, five restaurants and up to three new retail outlets. There will also be a gym, swimming pool, dance studio, climbing facilities and sports hall.

Shakespeare's Rose Theatre - New Shows This thrilling theatrical experience returns to York in 2019. Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre houses an audience of almost a thousand people, positioned across an open-roofed yard and three tiered balconies. Four of William Shakespeare’s plays will be performed across the 10 week season in the summer which include Hamlet, The Tempest, Twelfth Night and Henry V.
Championship Cricket in the city For the first time since 1890 York will host a County Championship Cricket match at Clifton Park. The White Rose county will face newly promoted Warwickshire at Clifton Park from the 17 - 20 June. Preparations for the game are well underway with 2,000 temporary seats and a 30 table Marquee already in the pipeline. Tickets for the match will go on sale in January.
When All is Quiet: Kaiser Chiefs In this new and experimental exhibition at the York Art Gallery here until the 10 March, the Kaiser Chiefs explore the boundaries between art and music. Using their position as pop musicians as a starting point, the Kaiser Chiefs have chosen to rethink sound as a medium, inviting visitors to join them in exploring the edges between music, art, creation and performance. Bloom! Following the success of last summer’s events, Bloom! the city’s horticultural festival returns for a mini celebration in 2019. Involving a new Bloom! garden, transforming an unused city centre piece of land into a space for all to enjoy, a Flower and Produce Show taking place in June and city wide floral decorations across the summer months. The festival returns in full glory in 2020.

York has a torturous past with tales of plague and gruesome beheadings so it’s no wonder the city is home to so many wandering spirits, each with their own horrific story!
For all year round scares visit the York Dungeon where you’ll discover more about York’s 2000 years of horrible history in an interactive show. Are you brave enough to experience one of the many ghost tours that bring York’s frightening tales to life? Take an evening guided tour and hear stories of executions and grisly deaths, you may even bump into a lost soul. You’ll be spoilt for choice with ghost walks for the family and tours for those with a stronger stomach for gore and nightmarish tales!
Halloween is the perfect time to visit York, with so much spooktacular fun for the family and the fearless. Supernatural experiences are widespread in York, visit the childhood home of the famous plotter Guy Fawkes, where some overnight guests have checked out in the middle of the night. Daily tours take place in the Treasurer's House, back in 1953 the apprentice plumber had the shock of his life when he witnessed a legion of Roman ghosts in the cellar. Visit a pub like no other, one of the city’s oldest pubs the Golden Fleece is a frequent spot for mysterious activity where it is believed that no fewer than 15 spirits haunt the pub. These are just some of the many haunted locations across the city that are waiting for you when you visit Europe’s Most Haunted City.
As Halloween approaches and the nights get darker, go on a spooky expedition and experience The Great York Ghost Search. Families brave enough to take on the challenge and hunt down the hidden ghost lamps could be rewarded. Keep an eye out for the special mini ghosts hiding away, they are waiting to be taken home as the perfect souvenir. 11

Shambles
The city’s most famous street, the historic Shambles dates back to the fourteenth century and the medieval lane is said to be an inspiration for the film depiction of Diagon Alley, the magical shopping location from the wizarding world of Harry Potter. The street is now home to four different mystical outlets including the World of Wizardy and The Boy Wizard selling everything a wizard fan could possibly need and want and is proving popular with wizard fans from around the world.
The Potions Cauldron
Visit this old-fashioned apothecary shop, which offers specially-concocted drinks including Serpent's Venom Poison, Basilisk Blood and Elixir of Love (the first person to sniff it will fall in love with the nearest wizard). Head to the back of the store to discover a 6,000 piece Lego Hogwarts and a bubbling cauldron. The Potions Cauldron gives you the chance to mix your own magical potion and be a trainee wizard with the mystical character Phileas Phials.
The Shop That Must Not Be Named
For the true wizard enthusiast venture down the Shambles and into The Shop That Must Not Be Named, the city’s original and premier shop specialising in officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise which has recently expanded. Magic & Mystery at Barley Hall
Enjoy this new exhibition at Barley Hall which explores the often fine line between science, religion and magic in medieval society. Find out about those who were outcast as witches and wizards, explore the ‘science’ of magic and alchemy and how such individuals used protective charms and forecasting to foresee the future through prophecies and dreams. Using both archaeological and documentary evidence from the period, Magic and Mystery showcases a thought-provoking and often misinterpreted feature of medieval culture.
The Wizard Quest
For those wanting to explore the magic by foot, the Wizard Quest is a fun interactive walking tour for all ages. With potions, magical creatures and an important mission, you'll discover magic in the city streets. Tours run from March - September on Thursday and Friday evenings. Each tour at lasts around 45 minutes, starting at King's Square (at the end of Shambles).
Mother Shipton's Cave
Venture further afield to Mother Shipton’s Cave England’s oldest visitor attraction, opened since 1630 in the nearby market town of Knaresborough. It was home to the famous prophetess Mother Shipton and still is home to the mesmerising Petrifying Well, whose waters turn items to stone. Be enthralled by Mother Shipton's birthplace and her amazing story. Her prophecies predicted the invention of iron ships, the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
The Enchantment Chamber
To complete a mystical trip to the city with a stay at the recently opened Enchantment Chamber which offers a unique self catering experience, it includes a bed chamber complete with an unconventional four poster bed, realistic open fire, real wood flooring and furnished with an eclectic collection of magical artefacts from the wizarding world. “For drinks I like the House of the Trembling Madness. It’s a cool place that should appeal to everybody and has a massive range. The Minster Inn has good beer and cracking pizza on the same street as Roots. The Brew & Brownie serves great coffee just a short walk from Roots and Mannion & Co does great food. Le Cochon Aveugle and Skosh are both fantastic though totally different. They’ve both pushed on and serve really top end food. Nobody goes there without having a great time. Every time I think that the food scene in York might start to slow down, I seem to be happily proved wrong and promptly discover some new openings that deserve attention. 2018 was another year of adventure for the local food scene that’s seen big names open up, independents strike out and existing names maintain their deservedly strong reputations. According to the 2018 Harden’s diners annual food survey, York has been named the UK’s newest foodie hotspot. If you’re looking to mark a special occasion, there’s plenty of choice with Roots being the latest addition to the high-end dining scene in the city. Roots is the second restaurant from Tommy Banks and shares its name and theme of seasonality with his recently released first cookbook. Tommy’s first venture The Black Swan at Oldstead has held a Michelin star for a number of years and received many accolades while forging a global reputation, so you can expect great things from Roots. Tommy may be the new star on the local block, but there’re still plenty of other options for a spectacular evening, including Le Cochon Aveugle, who serve an ever-changing tasting menu, The Park by Adam Jackson, Hudson’s based in the stunning Grand Hotel and the Rattle
Owl which features Roman remains in its basement. Arras continues to earn rave reviews while The Star Inn the City offers brilliant views of the River Ouse and Museum Gardens. A little further out of town, Bishopthorpe Road is home to Meltons, which has maintained its reputation for great food and hospitality for many years now. Other new additions include a branch of The Ivy and Coto the newly opened Vietnamese Kitchen. New to St Sampson’s Square is Cut & Craft whose signature flat iron steak is great value. While new to Goodramgate is La Bottega. One of the most exciting newbies isn’t new to York at all though; Los Moros gained a dedicated following in the Shambles Food Court and have now taken over premises on Grape Lane to let them offer delicious North African food to more lucky people. If you fancy some back to basics antipasti, pasta dishes and secondi with unique Italian wines then L’uva should definitely be on your shortlist and while the team behind Ambiente are still dishing up fantastic tapas from their sites on Goodramgate and Fossgate, they’ve also found the time to open The Press Kitchen on Walmgate. 41

Alongside the newbies, there’re still the usual suspects knocking out fantastic food including a newly expanded menu at Pairings, fabulous food at Partisan - who now feature in the Good Food Guide - superb steak at The Whippet Inn and Skosh who continue to enjoy huge popularity amongst regional food lovers as you can see from our #OnlyinYork chefs’ recommendations. Along with our fabulous eating scene, York has plenty
to keep you interested on the drinks front. If beer is your thing, check out York Brewery who’ve been brewing within the city walls for over 20 years while Brew York have recently opened a new beer hall featuring 40 different brews on tap at any one time and spectacularly good food from Born to Lose Burger Kitchen. On a smaller scale, The Micklegate Social has plans to start producing its own beers on the sister site to The Fossgate Social while an exciting new addition to the Shambles Market area will be the Market Cat which will be a collaboration between the renowned Thornbridge Brewery and Pivovar who already operate a number of pubs with great reputations. The gin craze that’s taken hold shows no sign of slowing down and of course that’s reflected in the city. York Gin distil within the city boundary and Cooper King are making waves with their recently launched gin while they work up to launching a whisky. If you’re looking for the widest selection of gin then make sure you stop off at the Evil Eye whose selection of over 1000 gins has earned it a place in the Guinness Book of Records! If you’re new to gin then The Botanist offers a 90 minute gin masterclass to bring your knowledge up to scratch. As you can see, the range and quality of eating and drinking experiences just keeps getting better and better. It seems unbelievable right now that this time next year I’ll have the same abundance of positivity to share, but I bet I’ll be surprised again. Happy eating!

This centre is home to a range of small independent businesses including street food outlets, bars, shops, co-working office space and entertainment. The food outlets range from tempting Thai at Tikk’s Thai Kitchen to mouth-watering gourmet burgers at Sloppy’s Burgers and sweet treats at Munchies Cakeaway. Head down and enjoy this truly independent offering in the city centre.
Brew York Food Hall
A recent addition to the city’s street food scene is Brew York’s brand new Beer Hall. This city centre craft brewery originally opened in August 2016 with a riverside tap room attached. However in summer of 2018 and after a successful crowdfunding programme, the Brewery expanded into the neighbouring building and opened the new upstairs Beer Hall. The venue serves 40 beers at a time and also includes the new Born To Lose Burger Kitchen run by streetfood chef Mark Hill, known in York for his Street Cleaver business. The alternative Sunday lunch is one not to be missed! The brewery is also home to live music events and the City of Ale Fest which takes place across the city.

Located in the thriving Shambles Market, this city centre hub is home to multiple traders offering a wide range of the highest quality international street food. THEATRE RETURNS TO YORK FOR SUMMER 2019! Following its highly acclaimed inaugural season in 2018, SHAKESPEARE’S ROSE THEATRE will pop up again at the foot of Clifford’s Tower in the historic heart of York from 25 June to 1 September 2019.
Four new productions of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays – Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night – will once again transport audiences to the thrilling, intimate atmosphere of an Elizabethan playhouse, with plenty of breath-taking, spine-tingling, heart-stopping moments. The 13-sided scaffolding theatre offers three tiers of covered seating and an open courtyard for standing ‘groundlings’.

2019 is a big year for the district just south of York, as we host major cycling events in our historic market towns and celebrate the magnificent Selby Abbey’s 950th anniversary. With much to explore and fantastic events the district should be on every visitors’ ‘must see’ list.

The Selby district is taking centre stage once again in the cycling world by hosting not one but two major cycling events in 2019. Coinciding with the anniversary of the founding of Selby’s magnificent Abbey, 2019 is set to be the year the district hangs up its hidden gem status and really shines. With charming market towns and never ending green fields, cycling fans will be looking forward to Selby hosting a finish event for the Tour de Yorkshire on Thursday 2 May. The Selby district will also witness road races and Paralympic Qualifiers, as the UCI Road World Championships come to Yorkshire in September. Cited as being the biggest event in the cycling calendar, riders compete for their countries, rather than for individual race teams. It’s the only time this happens outside of the Olympics. The nine-day event is set to attract visitors from across the globe and for the very first time, para-cycling Road Races will run alongside the World Championships. Tadcaster is one of four start points for the para-cycling road races to be held on the first day of the Championships, Saturday 21 September 2019. The para-cycling races will be one of the qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. On Friday 27 September 2019, the district will also see riders involved in the women’s junior and men’s under-23 road races, as they race through the district to Harrogate; the finish location for all of the World Championship races. During 2019 the spotlight will shine once again on the beautiful market town of Selby as the district celebrates the anniversary of the founding of the Abbey in 1069. The Abbey is the jewel in the crown of the town and to celebrate its birthday there will be a series of high profile events that will run from March to October to mark this milestone including a celebration of St Germain - the patron saint of the Abbey. There’ll also be spectacular illuminations using the Abbey as the backdrop for a fantastic light show. Foodies love Selby Food Festival held each July, with cookery demonstrations and street performances providing entertainment for the whole family. And taking place over August Bank Holiday weekend, Sherburn’s Craft and Food Festival is another very popular event, attracting visitors from across the region. These festivals support the range of independent cafés, farm shops and restaurants that thrive across the district with a host of new venues opening all the time. With independent breweries like the Jolly Sailor and Selby’s first craft beer café - the Doghouse, the craft beer scene is becoming ever popular too.

In Selby itself, Selby Park offers five acres of space to explore right in the heart of the town and you can play a quick round of mini golf, while away an afternoon in the pavilion and sample the local, legendary Doubtfire’s ice-cream. Or, if you’re looking for an active, fun filled family day out, the Summit Indoor Adventure in Selby is the perfect answer offering bowling, skate park, aerial trekking, adventure play and climbing all under one roof. Perfect for a rainy, or not so rainy, day out with the kids. For your entertainment; music, comedy and theatre are all on offer at the award winning, historic Selby Town Hall - this intimate venue hosts world class performances, with headline shows regularly selling out. The market town of Tadcaster also has its own vibrant history as a brewery town producing beer made from the waters of the River Wharfe, which starts its journey in the Yorkshire Dales. The oldest of the three present breweries in the town is Samuel Smith’s, which dates from the 1750s. Beer deliveries to the town’s pubs can still be seen regularly, made by Shire horse and cart. Whilst in Tadcaster, visit the beautiful 15th century St Mary’s Church, nestled beside the River Wharfe. The magnificent stained glass window, designed by William Morris & Co is believed to hold two panels created by the designer himself. Not far from Tadcaster you’ll find historic Towton Battlefield, the site of a major battle during the War of the Roses that marked a turning point in English history. Walk the battlefield trail and see where the rivers are said to have run red with the blood of 28,000 men killed in March 1461, as Henry VI’s men faced the army of Edward IV. With so much to discover just south of York, this lovely district has much to offer the discerning visitor, whether it’s just for a day, or a longer stay in the area. The district offers many places that are ideal for an escape from the city. Marvel at the wildlife as you wander round one of the last remaining areas of northern lowland heath in England; the lovely Skipwith Common. Next door to this, for the more adventurous, is the Yorkshire Paintball and Outdoor Activity Centre. In spring, witness a carpet of colour throughout the ancient woodlands at Brayton Barff, which offers walks suitable for buggies and small children all year round and spot herons and kingfishers at Barlow Common Nature Reserve. For bird watching and pond dipping, RSPB Fairburn Ings is a must.

There’s little that can rival the joy of a day at the British seaside: fresh sea breezes, the sun on your back and the sand between your toes. In addition to sharing an indelible connection to the history of the English seaside, Scarborough continues to evolve into a true modern coastal destination. The roots of its heritage are still apparent, but with its contemporary buildings, packed cultural calendar and wide-ranging digital connectivity; it’s no surprise that the Borough of Scarborough is now the most visited holiday destination in the UK outside of London. Just 20 miles from Scarborough is the famous town of Whitby. This Gothic town is built on a rich history of imagination and storytelling. It can even be said that English literature was born here, as Caedmon; the first known Anglo-Saxon poet, was a monk at the famous Whitby Abbey. Whitby has many literary links. It is unofficially crowned ‘the birthplace of horror’, due to its hand in inspiring Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’, and Lewis Carroll famously stayed at 5, East Terrace between July and September 1854. The town is often credited as having inspired Alice in Wonderland (is Whitby indeed wonderland?) and Carroll’s very first publications may have been published in the Whitby Gazette. Outside of touring famous literary haunts (and there are many), Whitby also has a rich maritime heritage and, unsurprisingly, offers some of the country’s best seafood, served up in the most ambient of environments. Accommodation in this guide has been divided into five categories: Hotels: Hotels must have a minimum of six rooms, a licence, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless designated a Metro Hotel), and have all rooms en-suite or with private bathrooms. They must also operate a high staff-to-guest ratio thereby making service very attentive. Guest Accommodation: A category on its own, this also covers B&Bs, guest houses, inns, farmhouses and restaurants with rooms. These tend to be personally run by the owners. Self Catering: For self-catering accommodation, the layout and design, plus the range and quality of the kitchen equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and – crucially – the cleanliness. Budget Accommodation: Hostels and campus accommodation provide somewhere safe for young people, families and larger groups, and can be star-rated. Holiday, Touring & Camping Parks: VisitBritain’s star ratings reflect the overall quality of the park from one to five stars – five stars being reserved for parks of exceptional quality. The AA provides a similar inspection scheme for which they award pennants. Professional assessors visit properties every year, carrying out a routine day visit or an overnight stay in the case of serviced accommodation. On these occasions, they book in anonymously and test all the facilities and services. A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the experience, including the comfort of the bed, the quality of the food and, most importantly, the cleanliness. They also score the warmth of welcome.
Awards – Gold, Silver and Red or Yellow Stars: Places that ‘go the extra mile’ will, in the case of VisitBritain, be awarded a Gold or Silver award and in the case of the AA, be entitled to display red stars for a hotel or yellow for guest accommodation. Rosettes: The AA’s rosette scheme is an award, not a classification. It is designed to assess the quality of food served and is awarded on a rising scale of one to five. This is not to be confused with the VisitBritain rosette, which appears in the guide like this: and is used for quality standards. Accessibility: Symbols relating to the National Accessibility Scheme (NAS) for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility are displayed where appropriate on relevant advertisements. Alternative Accommodation: There are a number of accommodation providers who, although not eligible to display a NAS symbol, are still able to offer suitable and very comfortable accommodation for people with limited mobility.
