Jane Lady Gibson Chair – Make It York Whether you are planning your first trip to York or are one of our visitors that come back to see you us year after year, you are very welcome. 2016 is an extra special year for us, whichever season you visit. It begins with the return of the world’s most famous locomotive to the National Railway Museum: the newly restored Flying Scotsman. There are lots of celebratory events taking place, plus a brand new free exhibition, to mark the occasion. Spring sees the reopening of York Theatre Royal, which is not only home to some of the best theatre in the country, but also a very special archaeological site too. Its redevelopment is the latest chapter in York’s extraordinary past – be sure to book your ticket!
If you are visiting in May and June, you’re just in time to see the York Mystery Plays, which will be performed for the second time in their 700-year history at York Minster, the biggest gothic cathedral in northern Europe.

ILLUMINATING YORK
Liz Page – Chair of illuminating York 19 – 22 October Museum Gardens | VisitEngland / Diana Jarvis
I have been chairing the illuminating York festival steering group since 2013 and it is one of the most rewarding and challenging events I have been involved in. Since 2005, over 40 light based artworks have been commissioned and we have worked with artists from mainland Europe and throughout the UK. The festival takes place in the autumn half term, when the nights are getting longer and the temperature drops so it is a real privilege to be able to bring some light and colour to the dark evenings. We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful city, which provides a wonderful backdrop for artists to work with. In 2015 we presented a programme of magical pieces including a trail around the Museum Gardens after dark with illuminated cuckoos and owls flying overhead – we even filled the historic Shambles with glitter balls!
Lendal Bridge | VisitEngland / Diana Jarvis Guildhall
We are working hard to fundraise in order to grow and develop the festival and we have recently formed a network of lighting festivals in the north of England. This is designed to look at ways to bring more investment and develop new audiences. Around 50,000 people visit illuminating York each year and our programme includes around 30 events including some lovely partner events such as torchlit tours and special candlelit concerts. We are busy planning the programme for 2016 and will be bringing more installations and events to York this year, so watch this space!

The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival includes our oldest, richest, fastest, and most famous races. It provides sporting excellence combined with fashion and fun over four fabulous days – and it’s a personal favourite of mine.
YORK RACECOURSE EBOR FESTIVAL
The prestigious Group One Juddmonte International is the highlight of the opening day. So much so, that it was a winner itself at the 2015 White Rose Awards. I was delighted to see this event be voted as Tourism Event of the Year, and it was testament to the effort put in by the whole team here at York Racecourse. This contest was independently ranked as the best race in the world by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities last season. Plus in 2012 it was won by Frankel, considered by some to be the best thoroughbred in history. The traditional highlight of the season on the Knavesmire will get underway this year on 17 August and run for four days, finishing with the famous Betfred Ebor. All days have a real sense of fashion, however for many there remains an extra special feel about Thursday as it is Ladies Day, which falls during the Group One Darley Yorkshire Oaks race. The best dressed racegoers have the chance to win a trip to Dubai courtesy of Marriott Hotels.
William Derby – Chief Executive 17 – 20 August
The York Festival of Ideas is the UK’s largest free festival and in 2015 ran 170 events across the city of York, in partnership with 66 city and national partners. It attracted audiences of 33,000 people from across the country. The festival seeks to educate, entertain and inspire audiences of all ages in the joy of ideas. The festival programme is deliberately broad so that there is something for everyone. The 2015 programme delivered a broad range of talks, panel debates, performances, workshops and trails. These covered topics as diverse as medical discoveries and scientific innovation, high fashion military intelligence and surveillance, foreign policymaking, sport, workshops for families, stargazing, screenwriting, films and concerts.
The feature race of the Saturday is the Betfred Ebor, the oldest and probably most famous race at York. The excitement this event generates has been constant since the 1840s. The buzz on Ebor day is infectious.

YORK FESTIVAL OF IDEAS
In 2016 the festival is exploring the theme of Tick Tock, encompassing themes such as understanding our social history through music and image; nostalgia and vintage; the future of disruptive technologies and media; the creation of the current refugee crisis, toleration and civic society, the way we use our land and why; landscape cultivation and biodiversity; the future of food and lots more. Join us from the 7-19 June 2016 for a mostly free programme of fascinating events – full details will be released in spring 2016.

THE LITTLE VIKINGS GUIDE
York’s brimming with fantastic things to do with kids and we should know – we’re raising a handful of them here ourselves. Whether it’s chocolate or trains, Vikings or art, history or animals that they’re into this week, there’s something to entertain them. The parks and rivers are perfect stomping grounds too. When you’ve worked up an appetite, there are loads of places to refuel ready for the next adventure.

York for free Put down your purse! Some of our top things to do are free. Spend a day at the National Railway Museum without spending a penny: entry is free and there’s lots for children. A walk around the medieval City Walls is always lovely, but it’s spectacular in spring with the daffodils in bloom. For little legs, choose a small section and hop off once you’ve had enough. We love to stroll around the streets as there’s plenty to please everyone, from entertainers and musicians to bustling markets. Marvel at the Minster, take a turn around the bottom of Clifford’s Tower, skip along Whipmawhopmagate and amble through the Shambles.
Places to play
Where to eat York’s bursting with fantastic places to eat as a family, with independent gems, wonderful tea rooms and quality chain restaurants all offering a warm welcome. Our readers eat out in York with their kids a lot and have nominated their favourite eateries for a Little Vikings Award (our new awards scheme rewarding the best of York for kids). These awards finalists are worth working up an appetite for:
Slap bang in the middle of the city, Museum Gardens is the perfect picnic spot, with ruins to run around, squirrels to spot and gorgeous river views. Speaking of the river, the River Ouse runs through the city and is a lovely place for a walk or cycle (there’s a dedicated cycle track and bike hire is easy). During summer months, treat yourselves to ice creams from the ice cream boat. Combine a riverside walk with a stroll to Rowntree Park, a stone’s throw from town, with its well-stocked play areas, duck pond and fab familyfriendly café.
Whatever the Weather Sun shining? Enjoy some of the best ice cream at • La Cremeria Grande • The Luxury Ice Cream Company • Roberto Authentic Italian Gelato
For breakfast: • Brew and Brownie (amazing pancakes), • The Pig & Pastry (incredible eggs) For lunch: • Café No 8 (fab bistro; under 10s eat free!) • Trinacria (delicious neighbourhood Sicilian) For dinner: • Ambiente (tapas – something for everyone) • Bill’s (relaxed dining) Don’t miss Bettys either. An encounter with their cake trolley is something every child will remember. Well worth queuing for.
Don’t miss the Big Scream screenings at City Screen, where parents/carers with babies under one can enjoy the latest releases in a relaxed – if noisy – atmosphere!
Bring your baby! Babies love York and York loves babies. Need to change or feed your little one in town? The dedicated facilities at children’s shop Jo Jo Maman Bébé are great, and there’s no pressure to buy (but we can’t promise you won’t be tempted). Nature’s Purest, a gorgeous baby boutique situated in the Shambles offers pure and simple designs for your little ones.
Cold outside? Warm up with a hot chocolate at • Spring Espresso • York’s Chocolate Story • Café Concerto Raining? Surely not! Escape the wet weather by checking out the trains at the National Railway Museum, making a chocolate lolly at York Cocoa House (no need to book), painting a plate/mug/eggcup at Rainbows Ceramics or going on an archaeological adventure at DIG. www.visityork.org | 11
Make your own Yorkshire puddings! What you need: 140g plain flour, 4 eggs, 200ml milk, sunflower oil for cooking How to make them: 1. Heat your oven to 230℃. Drizzle sunflower oil into Yorkshire pudding tins and pop into the oven to warm.

York is the foodie capital of the county. Where else can you dine beneath the soaring spires of the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe or enjoy contemporary cuisine on the site where Vikings and Roman centurions once marched? We’ve rounded up a selection of delectable food and drink highlights to give you a flavour of what you can taste while you’re in the city.
Star Attraction Familiar faces from the small screen visited York recently to find out what’s on the menu in the city.
And... ...Action! MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace took a foodie tour of York to discover some of the city’s sweetest treats and delicious dining options. Gregg Wallace took a break from judging cuisine created by budding chefs and journeyed north to take a bite out of what’s cooking in York. During his day trip he satisfied his sugar craving at Chocolate Heaven Monk Bar Chocolatiers, sampled some classic Yorkshire pudding at Walmgate Ale House & Bistro, and tucked into afternoon tea at five-star The Grand Hotel & Spa. To follow in Gregg’s footsteps while you’re in York, take a look at the video of his visit at www.visityork.org/taste.

Let them Eat Cake Frances Quinn, winner of the Great British Bake Off in 2013, was in the city to showcase her skills at the York Food & Drink Festival. We caught up with her the morning after her appearance at the festival to get her thoughts on Yorkshire food and getting inspired. You are in York for the Food & Drink Festival. What do you make of the city? I absolutely love York. The architecture is amazing, the back streets and cobbles…it’s just lovely. But I really love the food scene here. Everywhere you go you see so many incredible independent eateries and cafés. York’s Cocoa House is particularly gorgeous. The fairy lights and the cocoa in jars are so special. I have plans to try a Fat Rascal at Bettys next. I’m an ambassador for National Cream Tea Day, so it’s on my to-do list while in the city! What inspires your bakes? I don’t just get my inspiration from the kitchen. Everything you see day-to-day can be edible. York’s known for its chocolate, isn’t it? You could create York landmarks from chocolate. Imagine a Minster made from chocolate! Tell us how you’d create a Yorkshire bake. I’d create a sweet version of a Yorkshire pudding and stuff it with Yorkshire rhubarb and custard. I’ve heard about the lavender around York as well. I’m known for my obsession with bees and honey, so I’d love to create some lavender honey of my own.

Shopkeeper and Independent Councillor Johnny Hayes tells us why York’s Bishopthorpe Road was recently awarded Britain’s Best High Street 2015
FASHION CITY YORK
“We were voted Britain’s Best High Street 2015 by the GB High Streets Judges and by popular vote. We won the Local Parade category as we are just a small local centre. However we are 95% independent traders and without any public money we have together built our street into a place that is loved by our local community and visitors alike. It is the community atmosphere and the good independent businesses that clinched it in the end for Bishy Road. Many parades of businesses have declined and have lost their character. Bishy Road has thrived and together with local people we have built up a wonderful co-operative energy. It is a place where people know you by name and you can buy virtually anything. All this makes Bishy Road a unique place to live, visit and do business. Bishy Road offers a lovely, friendly local shopping centre with quality independent businesses. We have wonderful cafés, restaurants and pubs, plus the butcher, the baker and the bicycle maker! We are known for our street parties because when our busy street is closed the lovely community atmosphere just grows and grows. We provide brilliant food, drink, entertainment, good music and that mixed with a great neighbourhood spirit makes a Bishy Road Street Party something very special!”

IN THE LIMELIGHT After a £4.1 million redevelopment, the curtain is set to rise on the new-look York Theatre Royal. For over 270 years, York Theatre Royal has delighted and enthralled the people of York and beyond, captivating audiences with a rich, diverse programme of creative activity. From vibrant musicals and hard-hitting dramas to large-scale local productions and the beloved annual panto, there is always something to capture the imagination and charm onlookers. All Change Here The theatre closed its doors in March 2015 to complete a major project, the first in almost 50 years. During this time it took up residency at the purpose-built Signal Box Theatre at the National Railway Museum.
16 | Promotional: York Theatre Royal
Working in partnership with the museum, York Theatre Royal staged two huge productions at its temporary home, both of which interwove the magic of live theatre with the setting. The first of these, In Fog and Falling Snow, saw a cast of 200 take audiences on a journey through the National Railway Museum and also back in time as they revealed the rise and fall of George Hudson, the Railway King. This was followed by a classic retelling of The Railway Children. The residency was roundedoff with the world-famous annual pantomime, which also took place in the Signal Box Theatre. The Next Stage The revamped theatre will re-open in spring 2016, featuring a new roof and
an extended and re-modelled front of house area. The main auditorium has also been refurbished and redecorated, and there will also be major improvements to access and environmental impact. Plus, a brand new café and restaurant will make the theatre an all-day destination. The re-opening spring season will see the theatre produce an exciting line-up of two world premiere co-productions, plus touring shows, ballet, opera and theatre and festivals for young people. It is intended that York Theatre Royal will be a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be both sustainable and able to thrive into the future. As one of the UK’s leading creative producing and presenting theatres, the theatre constantly builds on its reputation for producing high quality and ambitious work, with highly regarded productions of new commissions and revivals at all scales. As the theatre opens its doors once more at its old home, it will continue to serve audiences of all ages, from young children and teenagers to adults and seniors. There is something for everyone at your all-new York Theatre Royal.

Don’t miss Clifford’s Tower at this time of year – it offers some of the best skyline views across the city and including the famous daffodils which line the historic City Walls. Other festivals making a return include the York Literature Festival taking place in March and Fashion City York, celebrating the city’s chic style in April.
Summer – The 800 yearold gothic cathedral of York Minster will undergo a spectacular transformation in the summer of 2016 to become a monumental auditorium for a much anticipated, five week-long staging of the York Mystery Plays at the Minster. 18 | 2016 Years in the Making
Along with regular favourites such as the Festival of Ideas and the Early Music Festival, the festival programme continues to grow with the new for 2016 Eboracum Roman Festival (June) bringing York’s Roman history back to life. Autumn – September sees the Food & Drink Festival take over the city centre with Foodie Markets, tempting tasters, workshops and events. Looking for something a bit different, York hosts the World Ploughing Championships in September! Whilst Illuminating York invites visitors to experience the city in a new light, transforming it’s historic backdrop.
The York Early Music Festival was established in 1977 and is recognised as the UK’s premier celebration of music from the medieval to the 18th century. Designed to reflect the beauty of the myriad historic churches and guildhalls that make up the city of York, the festival is packed with concerts, illustrated lectures and workshops. Guest artists join us from across the world and audiences enjoy opportunities both to meet some of early music’s finest performers and to make friends with like-minded individuals. Many concerts are recorded for future broadcast by BBC Radio 3 and transmitted world-wide through the European Broadcasting Union. Highlights include the biennial York Early Music International Young Artists Competition, which attracts emerging professional musicians to York for one of the highest profile competitions in Europe. Each festival is carefully themed – in 2016 we will be focusing on the music of Shakespeare’s theatre with a programme called ‘Fairies, Witches and Ariel Beings’ running from 8 – 16 July. Guests include The Sixteen, directed by Harry Christophers, lutenist Thomas Dunford and the Scandinavian smash-hit ensemble Barokksolistene in their Ale House programme direct from the Sam Wannamaker Theatre at the Globe London. Venues include York Minster, churches across the city, the National Centre for Early Music and the University of York. Booking opens to the public on 7 March.

THE RETURN OF THE YORK MYSTERY PLAYS After a 16-year hiatus, the York Mystery Plays are returning to York Minster, bringing the drama and intrigue to the Minster once more. The York Mystery Plays dramatise the greatest story ever told – from the creation of heaven and earth to the last judgement. It’s a story of good versus evil, of life and death and of love, betrayal, loss and hope. In the summer of 2016 it will be presented on a monumental scale in an extraordinary setting. It’s 16 years since the plays were last staged at York Minster and only the second time in their near 700 year history. The medieval Minster’s magnificent Nave will be transformed into a 1,000 seater auditorium for the production, which opens on 26 May and runs for five weeks until 30 June. “It is a great pleasure and enormously Promotional: York Minster
exciting to stage the Mystery Plays at York Minster again,” says the Dean of York. “The production at the Minster will be special for a number of reasons, not least because, above all else, York Minster is a church.” In keeping with tradition, a vast community cast will work with one professional actor, supported by an army of backstage volunteers to create a unique spectacle, which will celebrate the city’s cultural heritage. “The stories told through the Plays are stamped across the very fabric of the cathedral, from the carvings in the stonework to the stained-glass of the Great East Window, which depicts the cycles dramatised in the Plays,” adds the Dean of York.
“The Plays will allow us to reach out to new audiences on a local, regional, national and international level and we hope experiencing the performances in such an extraordinary setting will be a truly moving experience and provide the opportunity for people to respond to their environment.” The production aims to provoke tears and laughter and be an intensely moving experience, but above all it’s a rare opportunity to see the city’s most famous stories brought to life in its most iconic building. yorkminster.org/mysteryplays2016

Walk the Walls From Romans and Vikings to royals and rebels, York’s walls are entwined with the city’s dramatic past. Soak up their history as you stroll above the bustling streets below.
1. Micklegate Bar 2. Bootham Bar 3. Monk Bar 4. Walmgate Bar 5. Fishergate Bar 6. Victoria Bar
The Gateway to the City There are five main ‘bars’, or big gateways, that guard York at key points along the walls. There is also one postern, or small gateway, one Victorian gateway, and 45 towers. At over two miles, they are also the longest medieval walls in England. You’ll need two hours to complete the full circuit.
Cameras at the Ready One of the most iconic York views can be captured from the walls that end at Lendal Bridge. As you wander from Micklegate Bar and follow the walls past the train station, York Minster comes into view, its soaring spires creating a picture-perfect moment.
Did you know? There is no charge to walk around York’s walls, making it one of the best free attractions in the city.
Kings, Art and Religion If you are an art aficionado, York Art Gallery has recently re-opened and now incorporates CoCA – the Centre of Ceramic Art. If you would like to follow up your visit to the gallery with a picturesque walk, cross the road and join the walls at Bootham Bar. This leads around the back of York Minster to Monk Bar, home to the Richard III Experience – an exploration of the life of the last Plantagenet king.
A Different Viewpoint A new view of York city centre can be found at Walmgate Bar, which saw new rails and decking added to the medieval gateway in late 2015 as part of a restoration project. If you are walking the walls, you will now be able to sit on the Walmgate Barbican and access the roof, creating a new vantage point of the city.

The Walls Came Tumbling Down We nearly lost the walls completely in 1800 when the council decided to improve the city by demolishing the walls! Luckily, resistance from the public was so strong that this was halted. Nowadays City of York Council spends around £100,000 a year on its walls conservation programme.
The walls are open from dawn to dusk
Did you know? Walmgate Bar is the most complete bar in York and has been someone’s home for most of its 800-year history. The last resident was a policeman who moved out in the 1950s.

Getting Defensive We shine the spotlight on the history of the walls.
Check ahead before walking the walls as they are sometimes closed in icy weather conditions.
When in Rome There have been defensive walls guarding York since the arrival of the Roman 9th Legion in AD71 and within 300 years they had created an impressive fortress. One of the most significant parts of these defences, the Multangular Tower, is a lasting reminder of the Roman City Walls. Take a look for yourself when you visit Museum Gardens.
Defending Jorvik The Vikings captured York in AD866 and modernised the Roman walls, covering them with a broad embankment topped with a timber fence before extending them to the edges of the rivers Ouse and Foss.
Taxing Times By 1068, William the Conqueror was in York and building a castle. In fact, he built two castles, one to guard each riverbank. Taxes introduced 150 years after William’s rule helped to pay for the stone walls that can be seen today. Since then, the walls have protected the city from invading rebels and the Scots, and were battered during the three-month siege in 1644.

HIDDEN YORK Martin Witts, curator of the Great Yorkshire Fringe and former York resident, reveals some of his favourite sneaky snickelways and ginnels around the city.
26 | Hidden York
Having been brought up in Bahrain and the large sandy beaches of Broadstairs, the Narnia-like maze of York’s secret ginnels and snickelways excited and enthralled. Daily I would tramp different routes after snifters of tremendous local ales and the occasional pancake roll from Stanley’s (now sadly retired), the oldest Chinese restaurant in England, trying to find the most interesting and swiftest route to the next appointment. Magical and mysterious places with names to match can be found within the City Walls: Whip-ma-wop-ma-gate, Bedern, and Hornpot Lane; the Shambles and Silver Street; Popes Head Alley, Patrick Pool, and Tonge’s Court, all promise adventure and intrigue. After a decade or so, I forged routes through the city that were appropriate to the weather. From foul weather routes avoiding every drop of rain and sunshine routes gobbling up every ray to night time routes, when each passageway stirred up the chance of friendly and not-so-friendly ghosts.
JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL In 1997 I purchased a fine book detailing York’s snickelways and retraced steps taken as a student, now learning more about the history and from whence names came. My interest surged and now weekly I set off to find new routes across the city created by new builds, refurbishments, and the reopening of some truly exciting routes along the River Foss. At the heart of York, the Shambles is fed by a plethora of tiny alleys, like veins and capillaries breathing life into a city that has a history, warmth, and decadence like no other I have chanced upon. You will encounter more characters than a Dickens novel and dream to return. Start at Bootham Bar, the oldest of the entries to the city, and take a walk. Every left turn, you will see a city that is clean, safe, friendly and beautiful. A crow flight route takes less than an hour; a snickelway meander can fill your day – or week – with a treasure chest of adventure.
Danielle Daglan – Festival Director 15 – 21 February JORVIK Viking Festival is based on the ancient ‘Jolablot’ celebrations, where the Vikings would celebrate the end of winter hardships and coming of spring. These thousand year old celebrations were long forgotten until York Archaeological Trust, the owners of JORVIK Viking Centre, revived this lost Norse tradition in the 1980s and our Viking festival was born! Now modern visitors to York can celebrate as the Vikings did, with feasting, storytelling and enjoying the Norse atmosphere throughout the city! JORVIK Viking Festival has become a firm fixture in the York festival calendar, going from strength to strength each year with established events including: the Strongest Viking competition, Viking encampments that bring the past to life, specialists talks, crafting, archaeological expert sessions and the Viking banquet, all leading up to the spectacular finale, where hundreds of Viking warriors take to the field in an awe-inspiring display of Norse storytelling, battle action and pyrotechnics! 2016 will see the festival celebrate the legacy of King Canute, the Viking warrior who rose through the ranks to become not just King of England but leader of a North Sea Empire! Plans are already underway for the 2017 festival, so be sure to keep an eye out online for dates and be ready to book your visit back in time to York’s Viking Age!

ONE DAY IN YORK When her Nan came for a visit to York, Minster FM’s Beth Parsons decided to use a York Pass to show off what the city has to offer. We joined them on their journey around the attractions.
Beth Parsons, a programming assistant on local radio station, Minster FM, was looking for a fun way to enjoy some quality time with her Nan, who was travelling from Trowbridge in Wiltshire to York. As she had never used a York Pass before, Beth decided that this was the perfect way to spend the day showing off some of the best sights: “The York Pass can save you a lot of money and are available to purchase from the Visitor Information Centre,” explains Beth. “The York Pass includes York’s top attractions both in and beyond the city so you have absolutely loads to choose from.” Using the free guidebook to plan their day, the pair made their way around five exciting attractions. Here’s how Beth describes their day in York… 11am – We got on the Park & Ride at Poppleton to save us on some car parking money and went to pick up our York Passes. I said to my Nan: “There are 31 different attractions that we can go to. Do you think we’ll manage them all in one day?” “I’m very doubtful but we can have a good try,” she replied.
30 | One Day in York
11.45am – Once inside the glorious York Minster, I asked my Nan what she thought of the windows. “Absolutely magnificent. So much work must have gone into it. So many hours, so much time. It’s just breathtaking,” Nan answered. “Just think of all of the effort because there were no cranes. How they managed to do all of this…you can’t imagine it.” 12.30pm – After some lunch and a wander around the Shambles, York’s oldest street, we went to our second attraction, York’s Chocolate Story. 1.30pm – “I thought York’s Chocolate Story was fabulous,” said Nan after we finished our tour. “I made my own lolly and put all of the different sprinkles onto it.” There was also some audience participation and Nan leapt at the chance to stir the chocolate up. I asked her if it brought back childhood memories but she said that she didn’t really have much of a chocolate childhood: “I was of the generation where chocolate wasn’t that popular but I make up for lost time now!” We wandered through the Shambles Market and on to our next attraction, JORVIK Viking Centre. 3pm – “That was fabulous. It was so lifelike. I would recommend it for visitors. You really wanted to touch them and talk to them,” said my Nan when we left JORVIK Viking Centre. “They looked very real. You really thought you were in there with the Vikings.” 3.45pm – We ascended the stairs to Clifford’s Tower. Nan said that the stairs were hard work but worth the climb. We went all the way to the top and took a selfie with York Minster in the background before making our way down to the riverside to wait for our final attraction, a YorkBoat ride. 4.30pm – As we waited for the YorkBoat we hoped for a breeze on board as it was a baking hot day. The boat ride took us up and down the river. “The man who did the commentary was very nice and I think we spotted all of the cats we were told to look out for,” said Nan after the ride ended.
Beth and Nan’s Highlights I think my Nan is quite traditional and liked York Minster a lot but she’s also a huge chocolate lover so York’s Chocolate Story was very good for her! My favourite was the boat trip because the weather was so gorgeous for it and it was very relaxing, plus I’d never seen York from the river before. “It was a lovely, lovely day,” said Nan. I asked her if she would recommend the York Pass to someone who was visiting York and thinking of buying one: “It’s definitely worth it. It’s been really memorable.” You can get a pass for up to three days so you could be sorted for a long weekend. I think if we had the pass for longer than a day we’d perhaps visit some of the attractions further out from York, such as Eden Camp, Castle Howard and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Whether you seek a unique gift or something special to remember your visit to York by, fresh fruit or a slice of delicious cake, you are sure to find what you’re looking for at the Shambles Market. A market has been in place in York since Viking times and in the centuries that have followed it has taken many forms and seen many changes, eventually evolving into the bustling, vibrant Shambles Market that exists today. This recently renovated market is tucked away between Parliament Street and just behind York’s most famous medieval street, the Shambles. It has undergone a spectacular transformation, with £1.5million going towards refurbished stalls and eye-catching huts and attracting a series of new traders with exciting wares. Take a look at our conversation with some of the market traders to find out why they think you should pop over and take a look around while you’re in the city…
Meet the Traders We asked some of the traders what they make of the market.
ST NICHOLAS CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
Lee Boxall, Artist A local artist capturing York in a new way on canvas Do you have any tales to tell about visitors to your stall? Markets are a great leveller. All people from all walks of life can be found in a market and it’s never dull. I have regular visitors to my stall who, for them, seeing my artwork changes their day. That’s rewarding. I love York because it is a city for everyone. It’s always changing.
David and Jason Kelly, Sticks Art Stones A stall selling wooden gifts What is the best thing about working at the Shambles Market? The visitors, the city, and the choice of traders. The staff aren’t bad either! We love York because of the visitors. Great people, great city.
Roy Dean, Fudge and Cookies A scrummy stall selling sweet treats Do any visitors to your stall stand out? I love talking to my customers about my products but was lost for words when one customer asked me why the whisky and ginger fudge was called that! York is the perfect blend of a cosmopolitan city that welcomes people from all over the world, and a big village, where it’s possible to get to know customers individually. And it’s all wrapped up with history, heritage, and an environment to be proud of.
Jolanta Narsutiene, Cosy Craft A stall that sells handcrafted gifts What is the best thing about working at York’s Shambles Market? The best thing for us is that it’s open seven days a week! The next best thing is the location and, of course, the people. The city has a very interesting history, beautiful buildings, nice people, and it is a pleasure to come here each time.

Past Times
WONDER AND WORSHIP Louise Hampson of York-based Christians in Communication invites you to explore 1,000 years of history within the city’s churches York once had nearly 50 parish churches and while there are fewer now, they, and the many chapels and meeting houses, are what help to make York such a magnet for historylovers. Whether filled with stunning stained glass and carvings or simple, classical and elegant features, their stories are fascinating, rich and varied. But crucially they are living places of worship and you will often see them buzz with the variety and activity of their current life. Many of them are off the main streets and easily missed, so exploring the back streets will reap rewards.
Some churches, like St Olave’s in Marygate, have strong connections with York’s Viking past, while others like St Helen’s opposite Bettys Tea Rooms may have their roots in York’s Roman age.
All Saints Pavement
Treasure Hunt There are plenty of York churches that are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. One such church, Holy Trinity, Goodramgate (now run by the Churches Conservation Trust) is tucked away from the busy shopping street behind an iron gate. Step into the churchyard behind the houses of Ladyrow (the oldest houses in York) and you will find a fascinating church with its Georgian box pews and no electric light – be there during advent for a magical candlelit service! Or explore the classical elegance of Centenary Methodist on St Saviourgate, where the daisies on the ceiling cunningly conceal air vents. Each church has something to offer, from the beautiful glass connected with the Mystery Plays in All Saints Pavement, to the Roman stonework in St Mary Bishophill Junior. Find out about the sisters who lived through the reigns of seven monarchs or Mary Craven, a pioneer sweet manufacturer from Coppergate. Every church will also warmly welcome you to share in worship with them and every day they offer you a place to reflect and refresh – come inside! To find out more about churches in the city, download the York Churches app, available for Apple and Android.

Some are a little further out but well worth the short walk to explore: Holy Trinity on Micklegate, for example, was once part of a great priory church and complex visited by Richard III. It was also the starting point for the annual cycle of Mystery Plays which set off at dawn on the feast of Corpus Christi that went on long into the summer night. On your way there you will pass St Martin-cum-Gregory, a tiny church nestling in its own little churchyard and now the home of the Stained Glass Trust. Holy Trinity, Goodramgate

IT’S CHRISTMAS! It’s the most wonderful time of the year and nowhere celebrates Christmas quite like York. Join us from November for the festivities and indulge in some magical memorable Christmassy merriment. York begins the season in style with the St Nicholas Christmas Festival – a series of events, fairs and festive fun. If you’re lucky enough to be here in the city, you are in for a treat. Here’s what you can look out for during your stay…
York St Nicholas Fair 2016 St Nicholas Fair, York’s annual festive market, was given a tinselly twist for 2015, with an extended run, new locations, and even more market stalls to peruse. This year, it’s set to be even bigger, with the Festive First Night seeing the launch of the festivities in the city and the opening of the Christmas markets.
The Brrr-illiant Ice Trail For one weekend in December the Ice Trail transforms York, sprinkling some magic across the city. During your visit, you can follow the trail to find a collection of beautiful carved figures made from crystal-clear ice sprinkled around the city centre and lining the surrounding streets.
Family Fun From Santa spotting at venues around the centre of York to journeying around the attractions with the children on a festive trail, there is something for children – and grown-ups – of all ages in York at Christmas time. There are pantomimes that keep everyone entertained and you can get your skates on at the Ice Factor at York Designer Outlet.

If you’re on a budget, you’ll find comfortable, affordable accommodation within the city. Too much choice? HOW TO BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION Your essential guide to booking your York break.
For your convenience, the accommodation in this guide has been divided into five colour coded sections:
Hotels Guest Accommodation Self Catering Holiday Parks & Camping Budget Single/ Family Occupancy Prices are listed according to the following categories in each advertisement: £50 or less | £51 - £80 | £81 - £110 £111 - £140 | £141 or over These price bands, where applicable, are based on the price per twin/ double room for one night and, in most cases, with English breakfast. Service charges and VAT are also included unless otherwise stated.
Single/ Family Occupancy Please note that most establishments may reduce the charge for single occupancy and increase charges for a family room. We advise you to check before confirming your booking.
One Night Stays
A number of accommodation providers do not accept one night bookings at weekends. For more details, call Visit York’s Information Centre on 01904 550099.
Cancellations Should you need to cancel your booking, there may be a cancellation charge. This will vary according to the accommodation provider and needs to be confirmed when booking. Cancellation and holiday insurance cover is widely available to protect you. We recommend PB Curran, specialists in travel insurance that is underwritten by AXA Insurance. To get your quote on your next York break, call 01371 705593.
Facilities We try to ensure that each entry for accommodation in this brochure is as accurate and easy to understand as possible and, for this reason, have kept the use of symbols to a minimum. We recommend however that whether booking via the Visit York’s Information Centre or directly through the accommodation provider, you check your own requirements carefully.
Walking Distances Many accommodation providers give approximate distances to the city
centre. As everyone walks at a different pace, these can be misinterpreted and we suggest you look at the distance circles on the map (see page 89) and if in doubt, contact Visit York’s Information Centre.
Booking Accommodation For help finding the right accommodation for you, contact Visit York’s Information Centre, open seven days a week. Call 01904 550099, email info@visityork.org or visit www.visityork.org.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Visit York strives to promote accommodation that is trusted to be of an acceptable standard and encourages providers to sign up to one of the two national quality schemes operated by the AA and Quality in Tourism. Accommodation featured in this guide displaying star symbols means it has been quality assessed by VisitBritain or the AA. A property not displaying stars will be awaiting inspection. A property displaying a ‘Q’ symbol indicates that it has been self-assessed and the owner has agreed to adhere to and sign up to a Code of Conduct. Some larger hotel companies operate their own internal inspection policy. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year. To confirm a rating, contact Visit York Information Centre on 01904 550099. Accommodation in this guide has been divided into five categories: Hotels Hotels must have a minimum of six rooms, a licence, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless designated a Metro Hotel), and have all rooms en-suite or with private bathrooms. They must also operate a high staff-to-guest ratio thereby making service very attentive. Guest Accommodation A category on its own, this also covers B&Bs, guest houses, inns, farmhouses and restaurants with rooms. These tend to be personally run by the owners. Self Catering For self-catering accommodation, the layout and design, plus the range and quality of the kitchen equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and – crucially – the cleanliness. Higher star-rated accommodation tends to have more spacious bedrooms and bathrooms. Budget Accommodation Hostels and campus accommodation provide somewhere safe for young people, families and larger groups, and can be star-rated. Higher-rated accommodation often provides en-suite rooms. Holiday, Touring & Camping Parks VisitBritain’s star ratings reflect the overall quality of the park from one to five stars – five stars being reserved for parks of exceptional quality. The AA provides a similar inspection scheme for which they award pennants. Star Ratings Made Easy Simple, practical, no frills Well presented, well run Good level of quality and comfort Excellent standard throughout Exceptional, degree of luxury
70 | Star Ratings
The Inspection Process Both VisitBritain and the AA assess hotels and guest accommodation to the same criteria with the star rating reflecting the overall quality of the experience. Professional assessors visit properties every year, carrying out a routine day visit or an overnight stay in the case of serviced accommodation. On these occasions, they book in anonymously and test all the facilities and services. A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the experience, including the comfort of the bed, the quality of the food and, most importantly, the cleanliness. They also score the warmth of welcome. The ‘Q’ Code of Conduct Should an accommodation provider decide not to be inspected, Visit York will only promote that provider on the condition they sign a Code of Conduct declaring that they will provide a quality standard throughout. Failure to do this will result in Visit York refusing to place bookings or promote them via the Visit York website. Awards – Gold, Silver and Red or Yellow Stars Places that ‘go the extra mile’ will, in the case of VisitBritain, be awarded a Gold or Silver award and in the case of the AA, be entitled to display red stars for a hotel or yellow for guest accommodation. Rosettes The AA’s rosette (insert symbol) scheme is an award, not a classification. It is designed to assess the quality of food served and is awarded annually on a rising scale of one to five. This is not to be confused with the VisitBritain rosette, which appears in the guide like this: (insert symbol) and is used for quality standards. Accessibility Symbols relating to the National Accessibility Scheme (NAS) for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility are displayed where appropriate on relevant advertisements. Alternative Accommodation There are a number of accommodation providers who, although not eligible to display a NAS symbol, are still able to offer suitable and very comfortable accommodation for people with limited mobility. These divide into two groups and are clearly marked in each entry.
DisabledGo Establishments displaying the DisabledGo symbol have been visited by a trained access surveyor. Detailed access information for these venues is available at www.disabledgo.com. SA (Self Assessed) Accommodation providers, restaurants and cafes displaying the self assessed SA symbol may have limited access but can accommodate people with mobility problems. For more information, call the Visitor Information Centre on 01904 550099 or visit www.visityork.org for information on individual accommodation providers. Complaints If you have any issues that have not been resolved by the proprietor/manager and which you would like to bring to the attention of the inspecting authority, please address your correspondence to the relevant organisation: For VisitBritain ratings: Quality in Tourism, Farncombe House, Broadway, Worcestershire WR12 7LJ Call 0845 300 6996 For AA ratings: The AA, 15th Floor Fanum House, Basing View, Basingstoke RG21 4EA Call 01256 844455 More detailed information about the requirements of each star rating is available from Quality in Tourism www.qualityintourism.com or the AA www.theaa.com.

The Brasserie – The Ivy Brasserie can be found in the cellars of The Grange Hotel; a contemporary eatery serving classic food with a French influence. What you’re getting – A quirky and atmospheric mix of melting candles and exposed brickwork with industrial lighting adding an edge to the proceedings. The Ivy Brasserie marries the unique heritage of our cellars with a relaxed and informal environment. Chef, Will Nicol deals in gutsy flavours and supporting British farmers is central to his ethos, using dedicated Yorkshire producers wherever possible. What else? – In 2015 we underwent substantial refurbishment, however our approach, team and values remain the same. We have also created an additional restaurant area aptly called The Vault; a casual dining space that complements The Grange and is perfect for smaller private parties.
