York & Beyond Different Perspectives Many of the sights of York are famous around the globe, but there are a number of opportunities to see something in York from a different perspective. York Minster: Chapter House & Mason’s Loft Tour, Crypt Passage Tour There’s more than meets the eye to the magnificent York Minster, with a selection of tours that will take you to staggering heights and fascinating lows. Traipse up into the Chapter House roof and Old Mason’s Loft to learn how workers in the 13th century used cutting edge techniques to create this feat of medieval architecture. Delve down into the depth of the crypt to marvel at the foundations of 3 cathedrals which are almost 1000 years old.
Treasurer’s House: Cellar Tour, Rooftop & Servants’ Quarters Tour There’s the chance to go up and down at Treasurer's House too, built on the site of a Roman Road. You can don a hard hat, and venture down into the cellar to see the spot where Harry Martindale was startled by the ghostly appearance of marching Roman Legionaries. Up in the attic you can see the servants’ quarters, which are largely left as they were when occupied, providing visitors with a striking sense of abandonment. The rooftops provide stunning views of the nearby Minster. Call ahead to check tours are taking place on the day of your visit.

Cooper King: Whisky & Gin Distillery Tour Take a behind the scenes tour of England’s only selfbuilt gin distillery, learning all about how it came to be and how their sustainable sprits are brought to fruition. You’ll see Cooper King’s state-of-the-art vacuum gin distillation, as well as their wondrous Tasmanian copper pot whisky still, the only one of its kind in Europe, before being treated to some liquid refreshment. An insightful glimpse into a different side of the York area.
Roman Bath Museum Tucked underneath the pub of the same name, you can see the remains of the nearly 2000 year old baths 5 metres below the bar. They were excavated in the 1930s and a steel walkway suspended above the ancient remains now takes visitors through the Tepidarium (warm room), Caldarium (hot steam room) and Frigidarium (cold plunge pool), with heaps of information and friendly volunteers to teach you all about Roman York, Eboracum.
Newby Hall & Gardens: River Boat Trip Weather permitting, the Yoredale river boat runs each day. It launches from the bottom of the 172m long herbaceous borders, some of the longest in the country, a haven for bees, butterflies and dragonflies. Enjoy a relaxing 25 minute cruise on the tranquil River Ure, savouring a little peace and quiet, while seeing Newby Hall’s beautiful gardens from a unique angle. Why should people come to York? York is the perfect place to visit, whether you are coming for the day or staying longer! There is so much to see and do jam packed into our beautiful city, I always feel lucky to live here. Can you recommend a hidden gem in the city? My favourite thing to do in York is walk around the city walls. It is a great way to see different parts of the city and you’ll be sure to find interesting spots to stop off at on your way round.
Why should people come to York? The atmosphere in the city is so warming and friendly, the locals are a chatty bunch that will do anything to help you. The city is packed with a wealth of historic sites and beautiful architecture - what more can you ask for? Can you recommend a hidden gem in the city? The Museum Gardens are a true hidden gem in the citytucked away in the city centre you can escape city life and find some time to relax. In the summertime I love to kick back and have some downtime in the gardens and watch the world go by surrounded by the historic ruins.
What’s your funniest York story? Definitely screaming super loud when a poor unexpecting stranger stepped out of an alley when I was on my way home from the ghost walk after being completely freaked out by York’s spooky tales. It wasn’t so funny for me at the time but my friends found it hilarious and luckily so did the stranger.
What’s your favourite York experience? The city has a really strong independent scene packed full of some amazing restaurants, coffee shops and retailers. To get a truly authentic York experience I recommend you visit as many independent businesses as possible on your travels around York. Do stop by the Shambles Kitchen and say hi and sample some of our amazing flavours.
Sum up York in five words Friendly, historic, quaint, charming, beautiful.

Ben Fry
aka York Town Crier
Mad Alice Local legend Mad Alice takes visitors on a fun, blood thirsty tour of the city’s haunted snickelways and gruesome landmarks.
Listen out for Ben Fry as he entertains on the early morning airwaves at Minster FM and by day making public announcements on the cobbled streets as Town Crier.
Why should people come to York? It feels special the minute you step through the city walls. Standing next to the Minster is a must do as the most magnificent cathedral in all the World (in the opinion of the town crier). Can you recommend a hidden gem in the city? Barley Hall is a real hidden gem and I’ve had an amazing time every time we’ve visited, and you have to revisit York Dungeon as you might think you’ve seen it all before but new shows about the city are added all the time.
Why should people come to York? Well, to see me obviously. York is a truly remarkable place where you can arrive with a plan and try to cram everything in, or without a plan and you’ll stumble upon a festival, a hidden café, or a random historical building! Can you recommend a hidden gem in the city? The garden at Treasurer’s House is a wonderful hideaway from the hustle and bustle. It’s a good place to soak up the awe of York Minster. The hidden chapel at the Bar Convent Museum is beautiful and its history is fascinating.
What’s your favourite York experience? Shambles Food Court has an amazing atmosphere and is the perfect place to take a break after walking down our own Diagon Alley.
What’s your funniest York story? I once lived in Paris and after a year I was thinking about maybe coming home. I was eating a baguette gazing up at Notre Dame contemplating life’s choices when an English couple sat next to me and were saying to themselves, “yeah, it’s nice but it’s not as nice as York Minster”. I knew that was my call home!
Sum up York in five words Magical, unique, evolving, enchanting and fun!
Sum up York in five words Best. Place. Ever. There you go that was three!

One of the many reasons York is such a great destination is that so much of its rich and varied history has been preserved through the survival of great and magnificent architecture. Many of these monuments to the past have taken on a new purpose, making a visit twice as worthwhile.
Have a butchers at page 32 of this guide and you’ll see The Shambles, once home to York’s medieval meat merchants. It is the only street still in York that was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The narrow width is deliberate, designed to keep the meats out of direct sunlight. The butchers’ hooks and shelves (fleshammels-hence the Shambles) can still be seen today. Blood and offal would flow down the street, and the stench was supposed to be quite remarkable. If that doesn’t ruin your appetite, the Shambles remains a purveyor of provisions, with amazing street food tucked behind the street at the Shambles Food Court. Parts of Mulberry Hall, a chocolate box, timber framed building on Stonegate, date to 1434. Its name was stolen from Mowbray Hall, also on Stonegate, down the Minster End. This now non-existent building was owned by the clergy of North

Newbald, and was home to a goldsmith called William de Hovingham during the reign of Edward III. Little is known about the origins of the current Mulberry Hall, but it is the perfect setting for the only Käthe Wohlfahrt store in the UK, filled to the brim with handsome handmade Christmas decorations from Germany. On Pavement you’ll find Herbert House. First built around 1545, the house was bought by the Herbert family in 1557 from the Company of Merchant Adventurers. Its most famous resident was explorer Sir Thomas Herbert, born in the house in 1606. This parliamentarian turned royalist became King Charles I’s gentleman of the bedchamber, and attended to Charles right up until his execution. The front seen today dates from the mid-17th century, and it became a shop in the 19th century. It now sells the award winning York Gin, the only gin distilled within the city limits.
Purpose built for dancing and card playing by the well-to-do, the Assembly Rooms were completed in 1736. Their stunning neo-classical design was the handiwork of the Earl of Burlington, influenced by what he saw on his travels during three Grand Tours of Europe. York was a pioneer in creating a building for this purpose, constructed much earlier than, and far superior to, the famous assembly rooms of Bath. You can see the colossal Corinthian columns inside by visiting ASK Italian, with free pizza or pasta available for York Pass holders. Standing proudly on the corner, 1 Museum Street was built 160 years ago for the York Board of Guardians of the Poor, who administered the poor relief for York and oversaw the local workhouse. It later became a registry office and was used for this purpose for several decades. The wedding ceremonies took place upstairs, and couples still return to see the special space where they tied the knot. Downstairs is now home to Visit York’s award winning Visitor Information Team. Drop by to get advice on how to make the most of your time in York, buy tickets, book day trips, grab a map or pick up a souvenir. The North Eastern Railway (NER) Headquarters were built in 1906 when it was the fourth largest company in the country, with 56,000 employees. This Edwardian giant was designed by William Bell and Horace Field. The unique locomotive weathervane can still be seen atop The Grand, Yorkshire’s only 5 star hotel. Today visitors to the hotel’s spa can take a swim in what was once the vault where NER kept their millions.

NAME If you are visiting York it may well be for its history. You may not know, but there is every chance of your family surname having a heraldic history. Now you can find out if it has and take evidence of that home with you. Ancestral Name offers a unique shopping opportunity in York. Our most popular product by far is our Armorial print. Working from a database of over 1 million European Names we can reproduce the first registered Coat of Arms adopted by that family along with 1800 words of history of that particular name. Printed on A3 parchment it is a very different, personalised gift. Equally popular, but a bit more expensive, are our hand stitched Coat of Arms embroideries. They are stunning and really have to be seen; finished with gold and silver metallic thread they are a sight to behold and will be treasured forever. They come in a range of sizes, and we can create wedding and anniversary double embroideries too. If a more traditional approach suits you, our hand painted copper wall plaques may be just what you are looking for. Our first floor is a Game of Thrones fan’s idea of heaven. With a full sized throne for you to sit in, you can even dress as one of your favourite characters for a selfie. Our range of GOT licenced products goes from lower cost items such as coasters to full sized swords and an amazing range in between. Swords are only sold to over eighteen year olds but can be shipped worldwide. We are located at 13 Church Street and are open from 10am every day. Brew York’s reputation goes from strength to strength with ‘UK’s Best Barrel Aged Beer’ and ‘World’s 2nd Best Stout’ among their most recent national and international accolades. Wayne Smith and Lee Grabham, the two founders set out with an ambition to create a venue that was as interesting and appealing as their sublime and often comically named beers (look out for Rhubarbra Striesand or Goose Willis). With the Tap Room and Beer Hall offering York’s largest and most diverse selection of beers across its 10 cask and 50 keg lines, including guest beers, ciders and lagers from around the globe it’s fair to say they’ve delivered. And that’s without mentioning the considerable array of wine, cocktails and hoptails (beerbased cocktails whipped up by their genius mixologists) that makes every day a festival. The Beer Hall includes a street food kitchen where talented vendors take residency, bringing you some delightful treats to consume alongside Brew York’s magnificent array of brews. Don’t forget to pick up a taste of York when exiting the Beer Hall through the well-stocked gift shop. The Beer Hall and Taproom are dog and family friendly and are open Tuesday-Saturday 12pm-11pm, Sunday 12pm-9pm. Food is available until 1 hour before close.
Brew York Craft Brewery, the product of two York residents passion for all things beer, first threw open the doors to their welcoming showcase brewery and adjoining modern tap room with riverside beer garden back in April 2016. Making an instant impact in the local scene, Brew York has since undergone significant expansion, growing both the brewery and adding a large capacity Beer Hall in the adjacent building.

Holgate Windmill's 250th anniversary 2020 is a momentous year at Holgate Windmill: the 250th anniversary of its construction by miller George Waud in 1770. The mill was owned by the Waud family until 1851 and then passed through various hands until it was bought by the Gutch family. In 1939 the Gutchs sold the mill to York Corporation. It stopped milling in 1933 and remained silent until the Holgate Windmill Preservation Society, after ten years of restoration to working order, opened it in 2012.
Find out more at visityork.org
The Holgate Windmill Preservation Society is planning a yearlong series of events to mark the anniversary. In addition to their usual open weekends twice a month from May to October, they will also be staging a historical costume weekend as part of National Mills Week, craft days, an art show and an exhibition which charts the history of the mill. The Society historian will also be guiding walking tours of Holgate and the younger members, the Mini-Millers group, will meet once a month for songs and crafts.
It promises to be an exciting year at the mill and you can be part of this historic occasion. Join in the celebrations, come and visit the oldest five-sailed mill in the country and Yorkshire’s only working mill, or visit the shop to buy freshly ground wholemeal and spelt flour, and unique mill gifts. holgatewindmill.org

St Peter’s School, in the heart of historic York, is the fourth oldest school in the world. We are proud to have held a place in the heart of York for almost 1,400 years. According to the Archbishop of York, in 1589, St Peter’s School was “the only good schole in this great Cytie”. Founded by St Paulinus in 627 AD, the same year as the York Minster, history and tradition are important to us. As you walk about York you may stumble across one of the many sites we inhabited. St Peter’s in the late 16th Century was in “ye free schole in ye Horsefair” – located at the corner of Gillygate and Lord Mayor’s Walk. York later became a centre of Royalist activity in the English Civil War and during the Siege of York in 1644 the school buildings were completely destroyed and the school moved premises.

We have a reputation for academic excellence, achieved through a varied and challenging curriculum and delivered by inspirational and supportive teachers. We enable all pupils to discover their passions and pursue their interests through sport, music, art, drama, activities and clubs. Imagine boarding at the same school as Guy Fawkes, whose family owned the land the School sits on today! Luckily, most of our alumni are less infamous than Guy Fawkes and have gone on to lead the way in fields as diverse as musical composition, literature, politics, business and theatre. Much like York itself, boarding has modernised, relaxed and thrived, whilst holding onto tradition. St Peter’s has created a special character of family style boarding, with our small, friendly houses run by house
parents who teach in our school. York has so much for young people to do and our pupils love their weekend and Wednesday afternoon trips into the city, where they can explore cafes, independent shops, museums, theatres, cinemas and a huge range of internationally-renowned festivals. Sundays give our boarders a chance to visit top attractions in Yorkshire including Whitby, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. the freshest of fish and chips from one of the award winning caféss and restaurants. In contrast, south of Scarborough, the Edwardian resort of Filey with its gentle pace of life is perfect for a relaxing walk, fly a kite, build a sandcastle, snooze in a deckchair, or birdwatching at Filey Brigg where you might spot a seal and is great for fossil hunting. A visit to Filey is not complete without stopping at the Coble Landing, a slipway with a picturesque jumble of boats and kiosks, for a cuppa and delicious snacks by the water’s edge-nothing fancy, just wholesome and satisfying.

TripAdvisor has named Filey beach as one of the best in the world for families. There are so many ways to keep children fascinated and occupied. Filey seafront’s Sculpture Trail is a favourite, another is the Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park which has a lovely atmosphere and where animals are well looked after. Children are fascinated by the historical artefacts in Filey Museum and there is free entrance for children under 18. All the family will enjoy the Crescent Gardens with panoramic views of the bay and the music of the brass band.

How to Book Your essential guide to booking your York break accommodation
For your convenience, the accommodation in this guide has been divided into five colour coded sections: Hotels Guest Accommodation Holiday Parks & Camping Self Catering Budget Prices are listed according to the following categories in each advertisement: £50 or less | £51-£80 | £81-£110 £111-£140 | £141 or over These price bands, where applicable, are based on the price per twin/double room for one night and, in most cases, with English breakfast. One Night Stays A number of accommodation providers do not accept one night bookings at weekends. For more details, call Visit York’s Information Centre on 01904 555670.
Walking Distances Many accommodation providers give approximate distances to the city centre. As everyone walks at a different pace, these can be misinterpreted and we suggest you look at the distance circles on the map (see back of guide). If in doubt, contact Visit York’s Information Centre.

Star Ratings Explained Visit York strives to promote accommodation that is trusted to be of an acceptable standard and encourages providers to sign up to one of the two national quality schemes operated by the AA and Quality in Tourism.
Accommodation featured in this guide displaying star symbols means it has been quality assessed by VisitBritain or the AA. A property not displaying stars will be awaiting inspection. A property displaying a ‘Q’ symbol indicates that it has been self-assessed and the owner has agreed to adhere to and sign up to a Code of Conduct. Some larger hotel companies operate their own internal inspection policy. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year. To confirm a rating, contact Visit York Information Centre on 01904 555670. Accommodation in this guide has been divided into five categories: Hotels: Hotels must have a minimum of six rooms, a licence, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless designated a Metro Hotel), and have all rooms en-suite or with private bathrooms. They must also operate a high staff-to-guest ratio thereby making service very attentive. Guest Accommodation: A category on its own, this also covers B&Bs, guest houses, inns, farmhouses and restaurants with rooms. These tend to be personally run by the owners. Self Catering: For self-catering accommodation, the layout and design, plus the range and quality of the kitchen equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and-cruciallythe cleanliness. Higher star-rated accommodation tends to have more spacious bedrooms and bathrooms.
Find out more at visityork.org/sleep
Budget Accommodation: Hostels and campus accommodation provide somewhere safe for young people, families and larger groups, and can be star-rated. Higher-rated accommodation often provides en-suite rooms.
Awards: Gold, Silver and Red or Yellow Stars. Places that ‘go the extra mile’ will, in the case of VisitBritain, be awarded a Gold or Silver award and in the case of the AA, be entitled to display red stars for a hotel or yellow for guest accommodation.
Holiday, Touring & Camping Parks: VisitBritain’s star ratings reflect the overall quality of the park from one to five stars-five stars being reserved for parks of exceptional quality. The AA provides a similar inspection scheme for which they award pennants.
Rosettes: The AA’s rosette scheme is an award, not a classification. It is designed to assess the quality of food served and is awarded on a rising scale of one to five.
Star Ratings Made Easy Simple, practical, no frills Well presented, well run Good level of quality & comfort Excellent standard throughout Exceptional, degree of luxury The Inspection Process: Both VisitBritain and the AA assess hotels and guest accommodation to the same criteria with the star rating reflecting the overall quality of the experience. Professional assessors visit properties every year, carrying out a routine day visit or an overnight stay in the case of serviced accommodation. On these occasions, they book in anonymously and test all the facilities and services. A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the experience, including the comfort of the bed, the quality of the food and, most importantly, the cleanliness. They also score the warmth of welcome.
This is not to be confused with the VisitBritain rosette, which appears in the guide like this and is used for quality standards. Complaints: If you have any issues that have not been resolved by the proprietor/manager and which you would like to bring to the attention of the inspecting authority, please address your correspondence to the relevant organisation: For VisitBritain ratings: VisitEngland Assesment Services, call 01256 491111 or email visitenglandassesmentservices@theaa.com For AA ratings: The AA, 15th Floor Fanum House, Basing View, Basingstoke RG21 4EA call 01256 844455. More detailed information about the requirements of each star rating is available.

Enjoy more of York By finding out the best way of getting around This magical city is easily explored on foot - the city centre is compact and enclosed within medieval walls that provide relaxing walking away from any hustle and bustle.
For travel into and around the city by bike, bus or on foot, use our i-Travel York website.
Most of the historic streets are pedestrianised, making sightseeing safe and enjoyable. For cyclists, there is a network of paths and trails, plenty of cycle parking and access from National Cycle Routes 65 and 66. You can find out about bike hire from the Visit York Information Centre at 1 Museum Street or visityork.org.
Bus route map & times including Park & Ride
If you’re travelling by bus, our city centre stops have real time information so you’ll have no problem reaching the most popular destinations. York’s Park & Ride service is one of the best in the UK, with six sites located around the outer ring road and new electric buses operating on most routes.
