s the year rolls on, and graduation comes closer for Seniors, the Vista View promises to continually publish, semi-monthly, articles on school events and happenings, student life, sports, trending and controversial topics, local news, and entertainment (be it literature, cinematic, or music). Last year, we introduced a re-vamped layout with co-ordination from this year’s Editor-in-Chief, Cameron Tu, and last year’s Editor-in-Chief (and overlordess), Alexa Silva. This year, we pledge to not only make the newspaper even more visually stunning, but too also make it exciting from a student’s perspective, and knowledge-garnering from a teacher’s perspective. New inside this issue is a brand new section, Fashion (introduced by Life/Fashion Editor Alisson Shoffner). What’ll come next issue? Only time will tell, because we don’t really know! If you have any suggestions, please let a staff member (see back page) know. We don’t bite, we write. Also, we now have a Facebook page. It can be found by searching for “The Vista View 2011-2012.” Use the link to give us feedback, or suggestions! That being said, enjoy this issue and look forward to our future publications!

2011 Back-to-School Dance: “Under the Western Skies” ALYSHA FONTAINE Weekend Editor

O

ne of the first events that students have to look forward to as school starts is the back to school dance. Each year the dance is put on by the Commissioners of Dance and is planned months in advance. This year’s commissioners, Allison Vergara (12), Emily Olson (11), and Geordyn Coker (12) had to pick a theme, decide what food will be at the dance, what D.J, will play, what decorations will be needed, and how many tickets they need to sell. Every year is pretty much the same routine, however this year; the commissioners decided to do something different. After deciding on a theme, they made the choice of having the back to school dance, coined as “Under the Western Skies,” outside in the quad, something that has never been done before. “We came up with the theme because we wanted it to be related to our school somehow and we figured that since we are the Broncos a western

theme would fit perfectly and we thought it would be best outside because it fit the them,” said Vergara. Countless freshmen showed up to the dance right after the Link Crew event to come out to eat great food, listen to upbeat music and dance with friends. Not only did freshman come to this event, but students from all class came to enjoy. Sonia Molenda, a senior, said she very much enjoyed her time there. “I loved the atmosphere of the dance; I loved how the D.J. and his music had gotten everybody to dance with his upbeat attitude and buoyant music. I also love the decorations; all the lights and the huge poster in the quad looked awesome,” said Molenda. Meanwhile, while the dance floor was in the centre of the quad, tucked in the back by the security office was the entertaining and hilarious photo booth at which students could get their photos taken. The backdrop was country western and had various themes. Each person had the opportunity to take three shots with their friends. After having their pictures taken, students gave their e-mails to the

teacher and were told that they would receive the photos at a later date. “My friends and I had a great time at the photo booth; it provided us with a great memory of how fun the dance was. It will be something I will remember for a long time,” said Molenda. The time and effort that the commissioners put into the dance definitely paid off, and had exceeded their expectations. “We expected, or were hoping rather that we would have a high attendance, and we succeed with that goal. We had at least 600 students there, so we were very happy [about] that. We also expected people to more attract to coming to the dance because it was the first one outdoor dance in VMHS’s history,” said Vergara. The dance proved to students that high school doesn’t always have to be a stressful place and can be a place where good memories and friendships are formed. It also showed students that they should get more involved in, and enjoy, all four years of high school, because they go by quickly.
