WAY FINDING

•Know where you are •Know your destination •Know and follow the best route to the destination •Recognize destination •Find your way Back

ARCH 675 Course Project: Jiayin Li, Manish Munankami, Tahseen Hussain, Xiaoxiao Cheng

PROBLEM: What factors make one building layout easier in way finding than the other?

Jack. E Brown Engineering Building

John R. Blocker Building

What visual cues aid in way finding ? How should they be oriented?

SITE ANALYSIS: “corridors, elevators, and stairways in a building must be designed with visual cues, and landmarks in proper locations

•Similar floor to floor layout •Circular layout may be disorienting

•Multiple level entry and very different floor to floor layout

MAIN ENTRANCE Jack. E Brown Chemistry Building

•Atrium helps understand building layout. •Easy to locate elevators

John R. Blocker Building

•Dark hallway •Hard to find elevator

CORRIDOR Jack. E Brown Chemistry Building JACK E BROWN

John R. Blocker Building BLOCKER

CORRIDOR Jack. E Brown Chemistry Building JACK E BROWN

•All hallways show views to the exterior on the ends for orientation. •Floor patterning aids in locating rooms.

John R. Blocker Building BLOCKER

•No windows in hallways for orientation. •Numbering is hard to understand.

FLOOR PLAN MAP Jack. E Brown Chemistry Building JACK E BROWN

Small maps located next to elevator indicate floor layout in both buildings.

HYPOTHESIS: Navigation in Jack E. Brown Building is easier and more pleasant than in Blocker building. Jack E. Brown building design helps orient its inhabitants with views to the exterior and is a simpler building layout compared the Blocker Building.

WHAT DID JOHN D BLOCKER BUILDING LOOK LIKE?

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVMENT:

SUGESTED IMPROVMENTS: “YOU ARE HERE” MAP

“YOU ARE HERE” map should have: ◆ Section color which is related to the wall's color; ◆ Room number; ◆ The location of you; ◆ Same direction as you stand;

SUGGESTED IMPROVMENTS: ENTRANCE Jack. E Brown Chemistry Building JACK E BROWN

John R. Blocker Building BLOCKER

◆ Add “YOU ARE HERE” maps with colors related to the wall's color in the main entrance; ◆ Add signs about the room number at the beginning of each corridor;

SUGGESTED IMPROVMENTS: ELEVATOR DOOR Jack. E Brown Chemistry Building JACK E BROWN

John R. Blocker Building BLOCKER

◆ Add “YOU ARE HERE” maps with colors related to the wall's color in the view from the elevator;

SUGGESTED IMPROVMENTS: CORRIDOR Jack. E Brown Chemistry Building JACK E BROWN

John R. Blocker Building BLOCKER

◆ Add signs about the room number at the beginning of each corridor; ◆ Add “YOU ARE HERE” maps at each corner of corridor in Blocker;
