About the Visual Effects Society

From its ambitious inception in late 1996 with a few hundred members in Los Angeles to a flourishing global honorary society with more than 4,000 members in 45 countries, the Visual Effects Society is proud to celebrate its milestone 25th Anniversary and the exemplary VFX community whose contributions have made the Society what it is today. As the entertainment industry’s only organization representing the full breadth of visual effects practitioners, the VES has built a rich legacy by advancing the arts, science and application of visual effects, improving the welfare of its members, celebrating VFX excellence and serving as a resource to the ever-changing global marketplace. VES has Sections in Australia, the San Francisco Bay Area, France, Georgia (USA), Germany, India, London, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York, New Zealand, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington State. The VES Awards Show is the most prestigious event on the busy VES calendar, as it pays special tribute to the legends and leaders of our field. Now in its twentieth incarnation, the annual Awards Show offers a platform for peers to recognize and acknowledge the outstanding visual effects work of the previous year. Dedicated volunteers from the VES Awards Committee oversee the awards process, from constantly fine-tuning the rules and procedures to vetting hundreds of awards submissions and conducting online Nomination events across the globe.

Visual Effects Society Chair and Executive Director Welcome to the 20th Annual VES Awards! We’re thrilled that you’re joining us as we showcase and honor outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation from around the world - and the talented practitioners who bring this work to life! In the past 25 years, the Society has grown in ways beyond our expectations. In addition to our thriving global community, we have all experienced a multi-year global pandemic and yet we still have been able to keep pushing the boundaries of filmed entertainment. So tonight, we shine a light on the incredible artists, producers and creators who have graced our screens with amazing stories that were once unimaginable. And thanks to technology and an enduring commitment to this profound tradition, we’re coming together safely and virtually. Creativity always finds a way. On behalf of the VES Board of Directors and our members and colleagues worldwide, thank you for your enthusiastic support. We hope you have a wonderful time marveling at the best in visual effects! On with the show… All the best, Lisa Cooke Eric Roth Chair, VES Executive Director

Host Drew Carey Comedian/actor/producer Drew Carey is the host of the 20th Annual Sam VES Awards. Drew Carey isJones. a standup comic turned actor and producer who had the distinction of having two hit shows simultaneously: the long-running comedy The Drew Carey Show, which ran from 19952004, and the improv/sketch show Whose Line Is It Anyway? on which he was host and a producer. The success of that show led to the creation of Drew Carey’s Improv All-Stars, an improv troupe that performed in showrooms across the country. In July 2007, Carey was named the host of The Price Is Right, succeeding longtime host Bob Barker. While in the Marine Reserves, his military buzz cut and black wide-rim glasses became part of his trademark look. He began his successful career as a comedian in 1986 at the Cleveland Comedy Club. One of his first big breaks was competing on Star Search ‘88. In 1991, Carey landed a spot on HBO’s 14th Annual Young Comedians Special and appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Carey landed his own television development deal at Disney, which led to an opportunity for Carey to co-star in the series The Good Life. Carey also had the opportunity to work with Bruce Helford, who was a consulting writer on the series and hired Carey as a staff writer for The Gaby Hoffman Show. Their experience led the two of them to co-create a series for Carey. Carey went on to star in his own comedy special for Showtime, Drew Carey: Human Cartoon and performed in Showtime’s Tenth Anniversary of the Montreal Comedy Festival. Carey has also been a longtime host on SiriusXM channel, Little Steven’s Underground Garage, where for 10 years he hosted Drew Carey’s Friday Night Dance Party. In 2018, Carey turned this into a weekly show, The Friday Night Freak Out.

Award for Creative Excellence Guillermo del Toro Acclaimed director-producer-screenwriter Guillermo del Toro is the recipient of the VES Award for Creative Excellence, bestowed by the Board of Directors. The VES honors del Toro for his consummate artistry and expansive storytelling that blends iconic visual effects and unforgettable narrative. Harnessing his intuitive vision, del Toro has created a distinctive cinematic style mixing the world of monster movies, comic books and exuberant visuals straight from his imagination. Acclaimed Mexican director-producer-screenwriter Guillermo del Toro received the Academy Award® for Best Director and Best Picture for the fantastical romance The Shape of Water, and the film also won for Best Production Design and Best Original Score. Additional accolades for del Toro and the film included: the Golden Lion for best film at the Venice Film Festival in 2017; Best Director awards from the DGA, BAFTA and Los Angeles Film Critics Association; Outstanding Producer Award from the PGA; and a Best Original Screenplay nomination from the Academy. Del Toro reunited with his The Shape of Water studio Searchlight Pictures for his directorial follow-up Nightmare Alley, which has received wide acclaim with four Academy Award® nominations including Best Picture; three BAFTA nominations; a WGA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay; and an ASC nomination for Best Feature Film; among others. Del Toro’s upcoming projects include his stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio, and the Netflix anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. In his filmmaking career, del Toro has alternated between Spanishlanguage gothic fantasy films such as The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, and American studio movies including Blade II, Hellboy and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak. Pan’s Labyrinth became one of the top-grossing foreign releases in the United States and was also a critical smash, receiving six Oscar® nominations, and winning for art direction, cinematography and makeup.

Lifetime Achievement Award Lynwen Brennan Lucasfilm EVP/General Manager Lynwen Brennan is the recipient of the VES Lifetime Achievement Award, bestowed by the Board of Directors. The VES honors Brennan for her dedication to the industry and advancement of unforgettable storytelling through visual effects. She is a driving force for creativity, collaboration and synergy, and cutting-edge endeavors at the forefront of our craft. Brennan has been instrumental in the studio’s creation of groundbreaking entertainment, pioneering visual effects, sound design and computer animation for TV and film. As General Manager and Executive Vice President of Lucasfilm – home to the legendary Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises - Brennan oversees all businesses, including Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound. She is responsible for the development and execution of Lucasfilm’s business strategy, and works across each division to implement the company vision. Brennan was integral in the creation of ILMxLAB, which combines the talents of Lucasfilm, ILM and Skywalker Sound to break new ground in creating interactive storytelling and immersive entertainment experiences. Brennan’s career with Lucasfilm started in 1999 with her role as Technical Area Leader at Industrial Light & Magic. She rose through the ranks to become President of ILM in 2009, and guided the studio through one of its most successful periods. Under her leadership, ILM added three new studios to its global footprint, and expanded their studios in San Francisco and Singapore. In 2015, she was promoted to General Manager and EVP of Lucasfilm. Brennan was awarded Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, for her contributions in support of the UK’s visual effects industry. This was followed with a Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television from the British Academy of Film and Television Art in Wales, BAFTA Cymru.
