Demolition with explosive Capendeguy district - France Béziers: demolition of 492 apartments for a total of 300.000 cubic meters of concrete demolished in just 11 seconds. The eco-monster, “Barre de Capendeguy” was built in the 1970s. It was a difficult job as it was located near the city centre. The project lasted about six months before reaching the final stage: the implosion of the building. Were used explosives by 450 kilos of dynamite were used and 65,000 tons of debris were collected, then crushed and separated before being transferred to a nearby quarry, where the materials were recovered by special equipment to be reused as a filling for road foundations.

A14 Highway bridge The challenge of modernizing the Italian infrastructure is among the largest and most complex in the country and we have 50 bridges to demolish of the A14 highway in the stretch between Rimini and Senigallia. This is part of the work for widening and building a third lane of the A4 BolognaBari motorway, one of the busiest and most important in Italy. Work must be performed during night hours (one bridge per night) to avoid creating problems for traffic, especially intense during the day. These operations are extremely delicate, due to the context and the complexity of the operation to be performed. The planning and execution of demolition is studied down to the smallest details to minimize any risk and can be performed only by companies with advanced technologies and equipment, that make security and timekeeping priorities.

Venice - Giudecca Island DEMOLITION ON GIUDECCA ISLAND, VENICE This is the most delicate operation performed by our company, because the buildings were in the middle of an inhabited area. The building had been built between 1928 and 1930, had 3 to 4 floors and a surface area of about 20,000 m3. Suitable barges were made to transport the machinery to the island.

The types of intervention may be varied, depending on the nature of the settlement, its location and the nature of materials to be reclaimed. Different problems, each with a different operating methodology and then with specific know-how to use for each specific need.

The reclamation of brownfield sites are a key tool for the urban regeneration of the area. In fact, many of these areas have become part of the urban fabric that has incorporated them over the years.

DEMOLITION AND DISMANTLING OF AN INDUSTRIAL BUILDING This was an interesting project for the decommissioning of buildings in Rivalta, Turin. The purpose of the intervention is the relocation of two buildings of the district, for “fast moving” and “slow moving” currently located in the Mirafiori. The group needs a new space for the storage of car spare parts, so we had to demolish the buildings. The main processes are: • Dismantling areas occupied by plants and machinery, including metal parts inside the buildings; • Soil decontamination; • Redevelopment of buildings and surrounding areas.

Tonale tunnel - Pedelombarda The Tonale tunnel demolitions, essential for the construction of the future “Copreno Tunnel” and the expansion of the roadway, will allow the new highway to be linked to the current SS 35 (Milan-Meda) with the Pedemontana Lombarda B1 segment (one of the most complex and important highway works in the Lombardy region). A determinant work factor: tight schedule. Demolition work involved four macro phases and included the “gradually” demolition starting from the Milan direction tunnel side and proceeding towards Como. The first macro phase involved the reduction of the plant ground over the tunnel cover slab, fully freeing the reinforced cement slab. Next, the external sides of the tunnel were reduced to make the execution of anchor ties possible for support works. With the beginning of excavations on the tunnel sides, Vitali strictly proceeded by parallel progress steps on both sides so that the tunnel structures would not suffer asymmetric force by the surrounding land. The tunnel demolition phase scheme is always the same: from top down and on a single barrel at a time. To conclude the complex work, the demolition of the platform and walls; the demolition of the central portion and, proceeding with the same work method, the demolition of the last tunnel portion. The last phase, the demolition of the foundation works. Waste material was ground processed before being taken to disposal.

DEMOLITION OF CORRIERE DELLA SERA HEAD OFFICE IN MILAN

Special features of the work included the urban context as the building in question was in the city centre near homes and commercial structures. The buildings, part of the urban fabric, required the use of resources and innovative equipment and technology to ensure minimal environmental impact, both acoustic and as regards the emission of dust. This allowed minor impact on the protection of citizens, limiting vibrations and noise propagation. The area of work covered 40,000 m2 with heights of about 15 metres.

The demolition of the building of RCS Media Group Spa, Via Rizzoli, Milan in anticipation of the redevelopment of the area was a highly symbolic job. It was a complex of buildings built by famous architects of the ‘60s. From a technical standpoint, this was not a simple job: part of the buildings, especially the Lotto 6 “project Martinelli,” is the actual place of business of RCS Media Group SpA, which houses the cafeteria, business services and some offices. For this reason, the demolition plan was developed in stages, thereby allowing the transfer of activities carried on and the subsequent reclamation of the area. The total volume was 161,500 cubic metres and the height was over 26 metres in some points.

Special Demolition Radio & video controlled demolition Long arms, tower and chimneys CASE CX800 Demolition This division includes demolitions using computerized systems that allow radio- and video-controlled demolitions. Skilled operators are able to guide, by a control cabin, the demolition operations at heights of even above 50 metres, in safe conditions. These specific jobs at a height can also be carried out with the use of special long arms which are particularly suitable for silos, towers, reservoirs and, in some cases, even chimneys. For this particular type of work, special attention is paid to reducing the impact on the environment: reducing dust and the use of screening systems with the explicit purpose of containing debris from the demolition.

Civitavecchia Arbor The demolition of the silos for the storage of materials placed on quays 7 and 8 of Civitavecchia port (harbor of the glass). The area where the complex stands in the port is almost rectangular in shape with dimensions of about 65m x 230 m and a height of up to 47 m from ground level. The “buildings to be demolished are on average more than 50 years old and therefore the demolition has to be carried out with even greater precision. The structures of the round silos are all in a widespread condition of deterioration, aggravated by the reduced thickness of the now oxidized surface.

The total amount is around â‚Ź 1,700,000.00. The demolition operation will last about 2 months special demolition

Orio al Serio International Airport Work that concerned the runway was divided into three subsequent phases; the first focused on the West side and North area of the aircraft lot (safety area 10) and that did not restrict flights. From April 26th, still guarantee airport operating continuity, the second phase was launched that concerned the opposite safety area to the East of the runway (safety area 28). The third and final phase, completed between May 13th and Just 1st, 2014 for a total of 20 days, concerned the central part of the runway and taxiways for an overall length of about 2 k, during which the runway was fully closed.

An unprecedented intervention, included in the operating context of the fourth largest Italian airport in terms of passenger transit and first in cargo. The contract, totalling around 2 million, is included in a larger renovation and expansion project that required an overall investment of approximately 20 million. To complete work, the Olbia airport was closed to air traffic from midnight on Monday, March 2nd to midnight on Saturday, March 7th, 2015. Just 6 days of intense work dividing the 24h into 3 shifts.

Vitali Spa’s umpteenth race against time: renovating the Olbia “Costa Smeralda” Italian airport runway, especially used in the summer months.

About 80 men worked in three shifts with one hundred perfectly coordinated machines to guarantee the new paving (about 5,000 tonnes) and position of about 150 AVL systems (visual aid lighting - aircraft navigation support runway lights).

The contract concerns the entire runway re-pavement works (airport closed from March 2-7 with uninterrupted 24h work); following this phase, work also concerned the sub-foundation for the sole operating airport link. Old AVL (visual aid lighting) systems were also removed; the new bases relocated under the asphalt strip and then all runway lights (relocated after the new asphalt was laid), laying new raceways for their wiring. Lastly, horizontal signs were renovated.

An important motorway for Lombardy and an important improvement for local and regional traffic and even more strategic in the perspective of Expo 2015. The new motorway will be used by thousands of vehicles and it will also relieve the roads with the heaviest traffic, in particular the A4, one of the most congested motorways in Europe. The project involves building the BREBEMI motorway, in the stretch from Treviglio to Cassano d’Adda for a total of 6.5 kilometers. The total amount of the works, contracted out by Consortium BBM, about euro 16 million.

Some numbers: Total length: 62 km Total cost: 1,6 billion Time savings: 6,8 million Annual increase of GDP: 380 million infrastructure

SP 14 Rivoltana and Liscate

A4 Milan-Bergamo motorway expansion

Client: Consorzio BBM Total amount: 82.084.042,45 â‚Ź Work time: 778 days Joint venture Soc. Cons. P.A. 51% - Vitali spa 49%

The Vitali Group was one of the leading players in the recent construction of the fourth lane of the A4 in the Milan-Bergamo stretch. The project was to widen the motorway for 9.4 kilometres. For Pavimental Spa, Vitali has completed ramps near the junction of Trezzo and new roads connecting the secondary roads near the motorway expansion. The Vitali Group also provided all the materials for the foundations from its quarry in Caponago (Milan). This important project, involving many people and resources, allows improving the fluidity and safety of this stretch of motorway, used every day by a very high volume of traffic: 140,000 cars daily and 40,000 lorries and buses.

The redevelopment of the Rivoltana road is complex because it is in a highly urbanized area (buildings, urban planning with industrial expansion, environmental elements etc.). The area is very built up and densely populated. The project begins north of Idroscalo park in Milan near SP 14 Rivoltana and develops from the roundabout for access to Idroscalo to Liscate. for a total of 6.7 km. The present road network has two lanes in each direction.

Cesare CantĂš Bridge - Lecco

Lenna Bridge (Bergamo)

Vitali has built the bridge over the River Adda linking Olginate and Calolziocorte, for the Province of Lecco. The new link connects the SS 639 road with the SS72 road on the respective sides. The design has paid great attention to the definitions of the structural and geometric details. Each bridge on the Adda represents the evolution of these structures, aiming to recall the past and hope for the future. Similar attention has been given to the definition of the auxiliary roads. This solution was particularly suitable from the point of view of the environment, thanks to the slender heights of the structural section.

Vitali has built the new bridge over the River Brembo, downstream of the existing railway viaduct, to connect Via Gozzi e Via dell’Industria. It is an upper arch bridge. Without intermediate support in the Brembo, with a 3D structure skeleton (steel-concrete) and special reinforced concrete foundations. In addition to street lighting, night lighting for the new bridge was also provided.

Stabilisation and Regeneration

THE METHODOLOGY This methodology has been widely experimented as used for decades in many countries such as Germany, France and the USA. Stabilisation of soil using lime and/ or cement allows the use of soils with unsuitable characteristics for the formation of embankments in general (e.g. clay and/or lime based materials) by treating the same material in loco. There are considerable short and long-term advantages in using this methodology thanks to the reactions generated by the limestone that continue over time, and can be summarised as follows: • Marked increase of the bearing capacity of the treated terrain; • Abatement of the impact of water on clay-lime based materials; • Increased resistance against erosion and freeze-thaw phenomenon. • Elimination of fine clay-based particles in the layer of treated terrain; • Increase in the level of utilisation of the treated terrain.
