THE SUGAR STORY Our increasing consumption of added sugar has become one of the greatest threats to the health of Australians over the last 20 years. Health experts agree excess sugar consumption is causing unprecedented obesity and weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and dental cavities.
Despite this, we eat dangerously-high amounts of the sweet stuff. According to the 2011-12 Australian Health Survey, Australians consume far more than the World Health Organization’s recommended daily intake of six teaspoons or 25g, instead consuming an average of 14 teaspoons or 60g per day! The current, international scrutiny on sugary soft drinks is gaining momentum; leading to a fierce policy brawl between government, medical and business bodies. In the US for example, some health bodies and doctors campaigning for an obesity tax have reported being physically threatened into silence.

But this debate will not be hushed. Many people believe taxing sugar-laden drinks will reduce demand, thereby helping ease the burden on our health system, which is struggling to cope with the weight of sugar-related illnesses. What is interesting however, is that chocolate and confectionery isn’t under the same degree of scrutiny. The level of sugar in some of Australia’s most well-loved products is equally as scary as anything reflected in soft drink statistics. The following list represents a small selection of branded chocolate and confectionery products that are consumed every day in Australia, ranked from lowest to highest in sugar: Caramello Koala 35g

Nutrition information panels on these types of confectionery products often split them into two or more servings per packet (with confectionery at 10 serves, or two snakes). In the real world however, we’re more likely to exceed this amount in a single sitting. As my grandma used to say, “everything in moderation, dear” and you wouldn’t go wrong if you took her advice. But unfortunately, sugar can be addictive for some people who are often unable to resist eating the whole bar. When I was the “overweight, corporate road warrior” (a lifestyle that lead me to overhaul my life and career and launch Vitality Brands) I would often rationalise my consumption of sweet things. I’d tell myself: “I have eaten these things all my life without a problem, why should I stop now?” Unfortunately, I hadn’t considered my increased age and sedentary lifestyle wasn’t allowing me to burn the energy, hence my creeping weight gain. It wasn’t until I curbed my consumption of sugar (amongst other “empty” carbohydrates) and started to exercise regularly and purposefully that my weight started to plateau and begin a slow, steady decline to what it is today. The glut of sugary foods available to us can make it difficult to stay looking fit and remain within the healthy consumption range the World Health Organization recommends. But when you consider the negative health implications of excess sugar consumption, surely it’s worth a try. Responsible, health-conscious Australians need not wait for a sugar tax to start making better choices for themselves, their families and society. Food for thought? Stay Well.

We aim to foster positive, fair and enriching relationships with everyone with whom we work, including our suppliers in Australia and 10 other countries.
The Vitality Supplier Code of Conduct Vitality has committed to engaging ethically with our suppliers. And we are not alone in this mission. Vitality has joined the movement of Australian businesses and consumers who believe that companies have a direct role to play in improving the working conditions of those making our products – both locally and internationally. In accepting this role, we aim to foster positive, fair and enriching relationships with everyone with whom we work, including our suppliers in Australia and 10 other countries. In forging these relationships, we act with respect, honesty and fairness, while expecting strict compliance to labour, environmental and consumer protection standards. To ensure these standards are met, we introduced the Vitality Supplier Code of Conduct in 2017. The code outlines the ethical and environmental standards our suppliers must meet, including treating their workers with respect and dignity, enforcing safe working conditions and being environmentally-responsible.
WHAT’S IN THE CODE? The Code identifies six key areas of compliance; to which we expect our suppliers to strictly adhere. It comprehensively defines Vitality Brands’ expectations in these areas: 1. High labour standards and fair treatment for all workers 2. Strong environmental protection standards 3. Robust customer and consumer protection standards 4. Risk management principles, compliance and reporting. The Vitality Supplier Code of Conduct is one proactive step to ensure Vitality Brands is, and continues to be, a business that influences lives in a positive way.

This continues to be a key component in the Vitality Promise to our consumers. Now, as we embark on a new chapter, Vitality is excited to launch its community-focused initiative: V3. V3 is a social impact fund tasked with influencing lives in positive ways by investing in and donating to a variety of causes and organisations aligned to the values of the company, our Directors and our people. ONGOING PARTNERSHIPS TO INFLUENCE LIVES IN POSITIVE WAYS At Vitality, we understand that partnerships are crucial to creating real, positive impact for our communities. Through our partnerships, we identify and deliver on the needs and wants of our communities. We have done this through our partnerships with Motor Neurone Disease Associations across Australia. Since 2010, Take a Break has offered $500 grants to people with MND to spend on anything they require for their wellbeing. This could be an iPad for communication and entertainment, help to tend to the garden or clean the windows, tickets to a concert or flights for family and friends to visit. Since its inception, the program has assisted over 300 families to take a break from the difficulties of living with MND. Outside Take a Break, V3 will extend its reach globally, partnering with organisations in both Thailand and Kenya. “When I hear you’ve gone to school, graduated, learned to stand on your own two feet and give back, that’s all I could have ever hoped for.” Paul Miller AKIN Founder and Executive Director
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF AKIN In December 2017, AKIN celebrated its 10th year of creating “a kinship”, as Paul Miller, the AKIN Founder and Executive Director describes it.
THE AKIN STORY AKIN was founded in 2007 after the sudden closure of a Nairobi-based orphanage. This closure left hundreds of orphaned and abandoned children displaced. AKIN intended to change this, sponsoring the children through school and giving them a chance at a better life. Since its inception, AKIN has strived for every child to have the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential and participate in and contribute to all aspects of the community. Through funding, mentorship and support programs, such aspirations have become a reality for hundreds of kids.
Addressing the AKIN students at the 10-year celebration in Nairobi, Paul reflected: “When I hear you’ve gone to school, graduated, learned to stand on your own two feet and give back, that’s all I could have ever hoped for.” James was proudly in attendance at the event. Having been involved with AKIN since 2012, it was an occasion he did not want to miss. “The vibrant celebration was a testament to Paul’s passion, persistence and positive thinking,” James recalls. “It’s moving to see how AKIN has supported these kids through school, into further study and their careers, while helping them become positive, happy and accomplished members of Kenyan society.”
THE NEXT CHAPTER Reflecting on the future, James notes: “The celebration of 10 years of AKIN also marked the start of another chapter of making a real difference in the lives of some good, young people.” The next chapter has already begun, with imminent plans to open a food truck business to coach AKIN students in the food and hospitality industries, while mentoring students into their careers and own small businesses. AKIN is not stopping at funding secondary, tertiary and vocational education. “We take the foundation that is education and do something with it, apply it. It’s about sharing what you’ve learned with others,” says Paul. James has pledged to support AKIN in this new chapter through the V3 foundation. “We look forward to contributing to the development of a micro-loans program for students who wish to obtain credit to start their own business,” he describes. “We’re great believers in the AKIN mission and look forward to sharing updates as the V3–AKIN partnership evolves and grows.”

The recipe spread over the following pages features Booster Blend Digestion. Not only does this plant-based blend lend a delicious, caramel taste to many foods and drinks, it also offers the ultimate combination of insoluble dietary fibre, prebiotic soluble dietary fibres, resistant starch and digestive enzymes to support bowel health and digestion. The blend includes: • Carob powder: High in insoluble dietary fibre, carob powder acts like a broom, sweeping away waste products and encouraging bowel motility. • Green banana flour: A potent source of prebiotic fibre, green bananas are one of the best, readily available sources of resistant starch – complex carbohydrates that, as the name suggests, resists digestion in the small intestines and instead passes through to the large intestine where it is used as food by good bacteria. • Peruvian yacon powder: Another potent source of prebiotic fibre, this root vegetable contains as much as 50 per cent fructooligosaccharide – an important prebiotic soluble dietary fibre. • Kiwi powder: Digestivestimulating kiwi fruit contains a protein-digesting enzyme called actinidin. Some research has also shown that the consumption of kiwi fruit powder can increase populations of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (F.prau). F.prau is one of the most abundant microorgnaisms in a healthy gut, and low numbers are associated with some inflammatory bowel conditions. Due to the sensitivity of F.prau to oxygen, it cannot be taken as a probiotic supplement – so what better way to support your gut health than from delicious Booster Blend Digestion? Keen to incorporate this powerful mix into your day? With its slightly-sweet, caramel flavour, this fine powder can be added to smoothies, breakfast bowls, yoghurt, used in baking or mixed with water or milk. Uncover a f new super ood INTRODUCING
TIGERNUTS
Tigernuts have been enjoyed for millennia, first consumed by ancient Egyptian and African civilisations that prized them for their healing and regenerative properties. Now, Power Super Foods introduces Tigernut products to its range. Nutritionist Georgie Ross explores the story of these nutritious gems and why you should give them a try.
16 vitality Autumn 2018
E AT FIT
Tigernuts are not actually nuts but small tubers, growing in clusters underground. Naturally gluten, dairy (and nut!) free, tigernuts primarily consist of fibre and starch. The resistant starch in tigernuts is non-digestible and acts as a prebiotic in the gut. Prebiotics nourish good bacteria in the digestive system, providing a source of energy and nourishment for the bacterial species which colonise it. While Australians will likely be new to the benefits of tigernuts, this beneficial, nourishing superfood isn’t a new discovery. Ancient African and Egyptian civilisations have long enjoyed using tigernuts. Due to their fibrous nature, these civilisations believed in tigernuts’ ability to improve digestion and aid flatulence and gastrointestinal discomfort. Digestive benefits aside, tigernuts were historically believed to have a calmative effect on the body, assisting in improving circulation. Scientific evidence has indicated this effect may be due to their content of the amino acid, arginine. Arginine is considered a precursor of nitric acid which is associated with vasodilation: the dilation of blood vessels.
Tigernuts are also a source of vitamin E and potassium. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant, predominately contributing to cell protection from free radical damage. It plays a role in protecting low-density lipoproteins (LDL) against oxidation and inflammation, which, if not protected, are key pathways in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Interested to learn how to include this superfood in your diet? Tigernuts have a mild, slightly-sweet, vanilla flavour. They boast as many culinary uses as they do health benefits. Innovators in the superfoods market Power Super Foods is introducing Tigernut Flour to its range. Set to hit the shelves of health food stores and independent supermarkets, Power Super Foods Tigernut Flour is made from tigernuts fairly traded and sustainably harvested in Niger by local farming communities.
Derived from skinned tigernuts, this extra fine flour has a slightly sweet, vanilla flavour. Perfect for baking, it can be used to replace wheat flour when creating cakes, biscuits, muffins, pancakes, cookies, pizza dough and more. This nutritious ingredient can also be used in smoothies and raw treats to boost digestive health. To find some inspiration on how to include Power Super Foods Tigernut Flour in your creations, see the following pages for some delicious recipes.
In more recent history, scientific evidence has found that tigernuts naturally contain digestive enzymes: proteins that break down food substances into simpler compounds within the digestive system. The three main digestive enzymes are amylase (responsible for breaking down carbohydrates), lipase (responsible for breaking down fat) and protease (responsible for breaking down proteins). Additionally, tigernuts have a similar monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid content to olive oil. Unsaturated fatty acids may lower blood cholesterol levels which in turn may have a positive effect on cardiovascular health.
Georgie Ross is a nutritionist currently working in product development for the food portfolio at Vitality Brands. Georgie holds a Bachelor of Nutrition and Food Science. She is passionate about clean label health foods that positively contribute to gut and immune health. Her passion, paired with her keen eye for upcoming food trends, sees her deliver new, innovative products to the Well Naturally and Power Super Foods ranges.

Add a bit of the stock fat to a frying pan and lightly sauté the onion and ginger. Transfer the mixture to the casserole dish. Bring back to the boil, stir in the tamari and season to taste. To serve, arrange the beef and zucchini in bowls. Pour in the boiling broth and top with the bean sprouts and herbs. Serve with lime wedges.

Love your gut In the past year we’ve seen a rise in new information and products touting the importance of loving your gut and feeding it the nutrients it requires to function optimally. Why is it all so important? To help us understand the gut’s makeup and the role it plays within the body, Food Scientist Wladimir Budnik breaks it down, piece by piece. A topic close to my heart, or to be more accurate, closer to my bottom than my heart (in a physical sense), is a very important but somewhat underrated organ: the gut. When we talk about the gut, we shouldn’t consider it as one single entity. We must instead include the host of micro-organisms that colonise our digestive tract. These are collectively known as the gut microbiome and play a major role in governing both our physical and mental health.
24 vitality Autumn 2018
WHAT IS THE GUT? Essentially the gut is the part of our digestive system from our stomach to our bowel. In terms of its size (relative to other organs in the body), its internal surface area is roughly 40 times the surface of the skin. To put that into perspective, it’s been quoted as being somewhere between 180-300 square metres (approximately the same as the surface area of a tennis court). This sticky, moist, warm environment is full of nutrients and is a growth paradise for the estimated 1,500 species of bacteria living there, totalling somewhere around 10 trillion microbes that comprise our gut microbiome. Think of the gut as a biological fermenter and the metabolism of the microbes that reside there as the digestion process, breaking down the foods we consume and communicating with the brain as to the status of our gut health.
E AT FIT
WHAT IS OUR GUT MICROBIOME? Although the bacteria that comprise the gut microbiome are approximately 25 times smaller than human cells, they account for a significant amount of our body weight. The total weight of the 10 trillion microbes of the microbiome is around 1.5kg – comparable to the weight of our liver or brain. To put this into perspective, I quote from the book Let Them Eat Dirt. How Microbes Can Make Your Child Healthier: “A single bowel movement is 60 per cent bacteria, numbering more than all of the people on this globe – a deeply disturbing fact for germaphobes.”(1.) A fundamental function of our gut microbiome is to aid in the regulation of our metabolism. Just like other living animals, we obtain our energy from food that is digested and absorbed in our intestines (read “gut”). Besides helping us digest certain foods that the intestines can’t handle on their own, bacteria produce energy for us, and the amount they produce is significant. Think of our intestine/gut as a bio-reactor where the bacteria of our gut microbiome ferment fibre, carbohydrates and proteins that were not digested in the small intestine. The end products of this digestion process are called short chain fatty acids (SCFA). Intestinal cells in the gut rapidly absorb SCFA and use them as energy sources. SCFA are also transported very rapidly to the liver where they are converted into critical compounds involved in the body’s energy expenditure and energy storage. SCFA help determine how and when we use the energy we obtain from the food we eat and importantly, when to store it as fat. So, it will come as no surprise that alterations in the production of SCFA by the bacteria which make the gut microbiome have been associated with obesity, both in mice and in humans.
THE GUT MICROBIOME AND IMMUNITY From the moment we are born a tiny, screaming (and for all intents and purposes), sterile little bundle of joy, we’re exposed to and begin to be colonised, both externally and internally, by the microbes that inhabit our environment, the foods we eat and the air we breathe. The “invaders” (colonising bacteria) immediately kick-start a series of fundamental biological processes in our body. One of them is to train our immature network of cells and organs that defend us from disease – in other words, our immune system. Of course, this process does not occur overnight. It takes about 3-5 years from the time we’re born for our gut microbiome to become fully established. During this time, it’s very unstable – especially in the first few months of life. Many inflammatory diseases such as asthma, allergies and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) are symptoms of an overactive immune response. Knowing what we now know about the importance of the gut microbiome in the development of the immune system, we shouldn’t be surprised that these diseases are being diagnosed more in children. They’re a direct result of modern lifestyle changes that are altering the types of microbes that affect the immune system. Our modern-day obsession with “sterility”, perceived or otherwise, as opposed to good old fashioned cleanliness, the overuse of disinfectants and sterile wipes and the reluctance to expose children to potentially allergenic foods such as dairy, nuts and gluten in the first few years of life are altering the types of microbes that affect the immune system. The significance of this can be summarised in the following quote: “There’s a reason immune cells wait for microbes to come and train them right after we’re born: because this is the way it has happened for millions of years and the way it will always be. We need to find a way to modify our modern behaviour so that the immune cell school can function properly.”(1.)

BRAIN HEALTH AND THE GUT MICROBIOME Immunity training and energy metabolism are two essential functions of our gut microbiome, but it’s become clear there are more. Recent research in the relatively new field of neurogastroenterology, commonly referred to as the gut-brain axis, has revealed that our gut microbiome also plays an important role in our neurological development. Autism, ADHD, MS and even Alzheimer’s disease have all been linked to modern day diet and its impact on the human gut microbiome. But this is a whole other story for another time. Scientists have not yet figured out all the functions that our metabolism delegates to our gut microbiome and these types of discoveries have prompted scientists to call our microbiome a “new organ” – perhaps the last human organ to be discovered by modern medicine.
LOVING YOUR GUT Given the significance of our newly discovered “organ” we need to treat it with the respect it deserves. Feeding it the best nutrients we now know it requires (to function optimally) should be a priority, no less so than when we consume foods that are good for a healthy brain and heart. We know that our gut microbiome thrives on complex carbohydrates such as soluble and insoluble dietary fibres (prebiotics) found in vegetables, cereals, grains, seeds, nuts, beans, pulses and fruits, and less so on simple carbohydrates such as added sugars and highly processed flours and starches. At least two thirds of our daily diet should include those foods that “love” our gut. Not always an easy task, but help is at hand. Various high fibre supplements are available to ensure your gut microbiome gets its daily dose of prebiotics.
A great example is Power Super Foods Booster Blends Digestion. This carefullyformulated mix includes high-fibre prebiotics and resistant starch-containing ingredients such as carob powder, green banana flour (which has the highest content of resistant starch of any food ingredient), yacon root powder (high in fructooligosaccharide, a soluble dietary fibre) and kiwi fruit powder (a good source of dietary fibre and digestive enzymes). Power Super Foods Booster Blends Digestion can be added to smoothies and juices or used as a nutritious inclusion in breakfast bowls, yoghurt and baked treats. See our selection of recipes on page 14 for some inspiration. Love your gut and it will love you back! It’s not that hard but it could make immense difference to your health and wellbeing.

UV PROTECTION + SKINCARE BENEFITS = A SMART CHOICE
We know that investing in our health and wellbeing today will reward us tomorrow. This means living a healthy, active lifestyle: eating well, exercising and protecting our complexion with sunscreen and quality skincare.
Though between busy work schedules, caring for families and finding the time to eat well and exercise, the needs of our skin can at times be overlooked. Simply applying a moisturiser before running out the door won’t protect skin from UV and damaging environmental conditions that can affect its health and beauty. Intended to provide a simple, effective, facial sunscreen solution is the recentlylaunched UV-iQ Australia. This innovative collection of SPF50+ facial sunscreens contains scientifically-proven skincare ingredients that help protect, nourish and beautify the skin in a simple step. Tailored to meet the needs of modern lifestyles and conditions, UV-iQ is available in two collections: Hydrating and Anti-Pollution. Each has been carefully formulated to feel luxurious and enjoyable to use, with weightless milks for normal–oily skin and comforting lotions for normal–dry skin. “UV-iQ lotions are designed for those with dry skin that is prone to feeling tight or flaky,” describes UV-iQ Training, Education and Product Manager Lauren Burton. “The formulations are creamy and luxurious, imparting comfort and a shine-free glow. “UV-iQ milks are designed for those with oily or combination skin. Formulated to be ultra-lightweight, the milks absorb swiftly and feel light and breathable on the skin.” Both lotions and milks are available across both collections: Hydrating and AntiPollution, with the Hydrating Collection also available with or without sheer tint. The UV-iQ collection is endorsed by Cancer Council for UV protection.
Cancer Council recommends applying sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours or immediately after swimming, exercise, sweating or towel-drying. Sunscreen should never be used as the only line of defence against sun damage. Whenever the UV Index is 3 or above, be sure to:

UV-iQ HYDRATING COLLECTION Is dehydrated skin a concern for you? When skin is dehydrated, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles can be accentuated. “We can combat the state of dehydration by increasing our water consumption and using effective, hydrating ingredients topically on our skin,” Lauren advises. The UV-iQ Hydrating Collection uses scientifically-proven Hydroviton® 24 to provide enduring hydration, buildable with every application. Hydroviton® 24 is a hydrating complex made from eight ingredients that naturally occur in the skin, including natural moisturising factors to plump and smooth the skin for a more youthful-looking complexion. The UV-iQ Hydrating Collection formula also includes vitamin E, known to nourish and soften the skin by protecting its natural oils. The UV-iQ Hydrating Collection is suitable for those exposed to the dehydrating effects of the outdoor environment and those living an active lifestyle. It is available as a lotion for normal–dry skin and a milk for normal– oily skin. Each is available with or without sheer tint.
UV-iQ ANTI-POLLUTION COLLECTION Do you travel to or live in countries with high levels of pollution? Studies have linked environmental aggressors including UV rays and air pollutants to the visible signs of ageing. “Particulate matter can damage the skin’s protective barrier, leading to skin sensitivity and accelerated appearance of pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles,” Lauren states. The UV-iQ Anti-Pollution Collection is designed to address this. The formula incorporates very high sun protection – SPF50+ – with scientifically-proven Unicontrozon: a plant-derived, active complex that helps protect biomolecules in the skin (such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins and enzymes) from the damages induced by ozone pollutants. It also features Hydroviton® 24 for longlasting, buildable hydration that firms and plumps the skin by reducing water loss from skin cells. The UV-iQ Anti-Pollution Collection is available as a lotion for normal–dry skin and a milk for normal–oily skin.
UV-iQ is now available from Chemist Warehouse stores nationally. Every purchase supports Cancer Council’s work in cancer research, education and support services.

Samantha W i lls Thriving entrepreneur Samantha Wills is the face of her wildly-successful jewellery brand and a business icon. Her journey has seen her relocate from Bondi to New York but the path was not always smooth. Now, Samantha is helping others achieve in business. She is also the in-store face of UV-iQ Australia. Vitality got to know her a little better. What’s it like living between Australia and New York? It’s the best of both worlds! Manhattan is home to about nine million people, but during Monday–Friday when all the other boroughs come to Manhattan Island, it swells to a population of 18 million people. The island is only 13.4 miles (21.6 km) long and 2.3 miles (3.7 km) wide. Growing up on deserted beaches in Australia, it’s hard to wrap my head around!
Do you prefer the vibrant, city vibe of New York or the beachy, outdoor lifestyle of Bondi? I will always be a beach girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sandy feet and salty hair, and the beautiful Australian beaches is what I miss most when I’m in New York. New York is definitely electric and a great place creatively for me, but escaping from a New York winter to the middle of the Australian summer is pretty amazing!
How do the different environments affect your skin? New York winters definitely dry your skin out quickly; between the elements outside and the indoor heating. I’m also conscious of how the pollution affects my skin. The Australian sun does not mess around, and a few minutes outdoors during summer can see you with more than a sun kiss. Add to that the 24-hour flight each way, and you really do put your skin through its paces.

A facial sunscreen with serious hydrating ingredients like UV-iQ Anti-Pollution SPF50+ Facial Sunscreen is perfect for helping to protect and re-invigorate my skin. It also has ingredients that protect my skin from pollution so it’s great for when I’m back in New York.
What do you look for in a facial sunscreen? For everyday under makeup, I like it to feel light and non-greasy. If I don’t need a lot of makeup for that day, I will use a tinted sunscreen as a base and apply a bronzer over it. I like UV-iQ Hydrating SPF50+ Facial Sunscreen Milk Sheer Tint. It feels silky and light and leaves my skin looking fresh and hydrated. If I’m at the beach, or outside in the Australian sun, I like a heavier, full-body sunscreen. I’m always conscious to also wear a hat and sunglasses to combat Australia’s super-strength rays.
What are your absolute skincare and beauty essentials? I definitely don’t do as much as I should, but my non-negotiables are: • Never sleep with makeup on. Always cleanse, even if with baby wipes before bed. (Also changing your pillow case every few days helps.) • Exfoliation: Find even a travel-size exfoliator you like so you can take it with you easily – a good scrub can work wonders.
Finally, I think if you choose to be in a relationship, be with a partner who celebrates exactly who you are. Trying to look younger or be someone else to try to fit with what you think someone else wants is exhausting. Find a partner who you can be and look exactly yourself with – that’s a great help on the journey to ageing gracefully.
Despite you living in New York, you still travel to Australia every six weeks, ensuring your jewellery collection still has an Australian feel. What is it about the beauty of Australia that inspires you? It’s Australian women who inspire my designs. I love Australian style and wear many pieces from Australian designers. Being a brand builder in this day and age is a real privilege, you get to communicate with your customer on a daily basis on social media. She is gracious enough to show you her life and where she is wearing your designs – so I am inspired by her.
Tell us about the Samantha Wills Foundation. What is its purpose?
sandwich (my 1am dinner) still sitting on my desk, and an anxiety sitting so heavy on my shoulders I could barely differentiate the weight of the physical tiredness from the mental angst of owing $80,000 in credit card debt that I had accumulated trying to get the business off the ground. Was that glossy, styled designer profile picture smiling at me from my inspiration board empowering me then? Not only was it not empowering me, it was doing the opposite. It was making me compare myself and my journey to a single, styled, perfect-looking image. It made me feel bad, isolated and only fuelled my anxiety. As I progress through my career, and more so the journey that is life, I am compelled to share more of the rougher bits I have experienced along the way. I feel a responsibility to the social impact of the day and age we live in. That’s why I created a platform that would house all the things I wish I had access to when I was starting out in business. The platform: Samantha Wills Foundation is a website, dedicated to empowering women in business.
I have been fortunate to have experienced a career to date that has seen my journey go from a Bondi Beach market table to the global stage of New York City. Sounds glamorous, doesn’t it? Well, some parts of it have been, but some parts have been life-altering, gut-wrenching, anxiety-riddled, isolating, cry-in-the-shower hard.

• Cut the sugar! This breaks my heart to type. Especially as I’m typing it with a Cadbury block next to my computer! But the results of clean and conscious eating show very quickly on your skin. **Puts chocolate away.** • Sunscreen – always. Non-negotiable. It will be what our future selves thank us for.
How do you stay looking great? What are your secrets to ageing gracefully? That’s a very kind thing to say – thank you! I also appreciate you asked “age gracefully” rather than “stay looking young”. Skincare is definitely the cornerstone of this process, and looking after our skin now, with our friend sunscreen, will show the benefits in the years to come. In addition to skincare, I exercise daily, both body and mind. I feel I look my best when I am happiest, so I focus on what makes me happy, and surrounding myself with good people. I also think it’s important to note that the images you see on Instagram are either from professional photoshoots, with professional hair and makeup artists (who are magicians!) and professional lighting.
We’re living in a world of filtered “perfection”, across many topics. I have no doubt it’s really easy to find a success story to read – will this inspire you? Maybe for a second. I mean, when I started out in business at 21 and had no freaking idea what I was doing, I would tear glossy designer profiles out of the monthly fashion magazines and pin them on my inspiration board above my desk. But then 3am arrived and I was still awake, burning way past the midnight oil, making jewellery till my hands actually bled to ensure I could get the order out first thing in the morning. My hair was in a dirty top knot, the dirty plate from my toasted

“I guarantee the more people you help, the more supported you’ll feel. It’s definitely a case of what you give you get in return.” It’s a place where I write about things I have learnt in business, where I also share things I’m still learning. It’s a place where we turn the spotlight on women in business doing amazing things. The pre-requisite for these women to take part in an interview, is that along with the success story, they have to share their hurdles and hardships. If I could have read that when I was starting out, I think it would have been like a comforting hug, knowing that other “soloprenuers” out there were experiencing the same feelings, hurdles and anxiety. You can read their stories in the BE INSPIRED section.
Your blog on Samantha Wills Foundation, Business: Things I’ve Learned, is full of great advice for aspiring businesswomen. Why is it important for women to share their experiences to help each other? I think in Australia the market is a lot smaller due to the population size of our country. I think this has made us respond in a very closed-network way, keeping our contacts and connections to ourselves for fear that someone might do better with them than we will. It’s the opposite in the US, obviously a much bigger market, but the open connections create camaraderie – an energetic network of business people that all bounce off each other.
32 vitality Autumn 2018
I much prefer to do business this way, I think even in smaller markets, everyone is coming to the table with their own brand story, and if you are authentic in that, it cannot be replicated. Sharing experiences and supporting each other is beneficial for everyone, I guarantee the more people you help, the more supported you’ll feel. It’s definitely a case of what you give you get in return.
How can women support each other in their daily business life? I think one of the biggest ways to provide support is to listen, and I mean really listen; not just wait for your turn to talk. As you grow through your career, your success is not defined by personal achievement, it’s defined by the team’s achievements. That requires support, even if it’s required in a part of the business that is not directly related to you. I also think it’s really important to remember that great leaders do not build followers, they build future leaders.
On the Foundation website, you say you wish you’d had a platform that provided support and empathy when you were launching your business at 21. If you could offer your 21-year-old self some advice, what would it be? I would tell her to stop trying to force outcomes, to have the outcome in mind but put your head down and build your personal brand repertoire to be the most qualified, worthiest recipient of the goal you’re chasing. If you build your own repertoire with integrity, the goal will find you at the right time and it will be far greater than the original goal you had set. Always hustle, but play the long game. And don’t compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter 20.
Modern women juggle career, family, relationships and their own wellbeing. Do you think it’s really possible to do it all, and do it well? I think you can have it all, but not all at the same time. Trying to do it all will see you do everything, but not at 100 per cent. Life is short, so choose what is most important to you at that time and stay close to that. There will be times where this ebbs and flows, but your inbox is still going to look scary tomorrow, so go and swim in the ocean or hug a friend on the weekend.
What do you do to stay balanced and keep your wellbeing in-check when things get challenging? I have struggled with this over the years, especially in the early days. I had no perspective that anything else existed outside the brand and what I was trying to achieve. Now I am very fortunate to have an incredible team around me who truly are masters of their field. To keep my wellbeing in-check, I try to get to Soul Cycle (in New York) every day. If in Australia, simply sitting on the beach (even in winter) and grounding myself, with the waves as a soundtrack. Sometimes, especially when designing, I have to take a few days away from my desk when I’m mid-collection. This allows me to return with a fresh perspective. And, not always easy to do, but in your most overwhelming moment, just stop and list things in your life you’re grateful for. It puts a lot into perspective.

M OTHER’S DAY
Mum's perfect day Being a mum can often be a thankless role, yet perhaps the most important one. A mother’s love, dedication, kindness, nurturing and guidance helps shape us into the people we become and is a constant reassurance throughout our lives. One of our greatest gifts. Mother’s Day is therefore an important date in the family calendar – a time to treat mum and remind her how much she means to you. Here are our top tips for spoiling mum this Sunday, May 13. You can select from a few of these, or indulge mum in each and every one of them.
LET HER KNOW
INVOLVE OTHERS
If you’re planning to treat mum for the whole day (lucky her), make sure you inform her of this. Even provide pick up and drop off times if you want to be precise. Tell mum you’ll drive, and she will not need to worry about a thing – except being surprised and delighted all day!
You may be the favourite child (you definitely will be once this plan is unrolled) but don’t forget that other family members will also want to celebrate with mum on Mother’s Day. Involve your siblings and other family members in your plans and ask them for their ideas on how to treat mum in a personalised way. Invite them to come along on the day to help mum enjoy herself.
Depending on the activities you choose, tell mum what she may need to bring/wear. For example, if you’re having a spa treatment, mum may want to take her make-up to reapply once her facial is done. If you’re taking mum for a walk around a pretty garden, make sure she wears comfortable shoes and clothes, perhaps packing a stylish scarf and earrings for her to dress up a little at lunch.
34 vitality Autumn 2018
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS When you arrive to collect mum, set the tone of the day by presenting her with a bouquet of her favourite blooms. Attach a card with a little message about how much she means to you and how you hope she will enjoy her day.
M OTHER’S DAY
THE RIGHT START A big day out cannot be fully enjoyed on an empty stomach. Schedule time for a delicious, filling breakfast at a local, favourite café to start the day right. If you have a lunch booked, opt to keep breakfast light so that mum has a good appetite for the main event. WHISK HER AWAY Time to get on the road! To make the journey as comfortable as possible get your car cleaned inside and out the day before. Map the journey on your GPS or phone so you can have a good chat without worrying about taking a wrong turn. Go the extra mile by making a fun music playlist of mum’s favourite tunes (yes, good time oldies are completely acceptable here). And if you really want to win mum’s heart, have a little bag of home-made snacks and some cool water in a cooler bag for when she desires refreshments. SPA SURPRISE “Mother’s Day” and “day spa” – the two go hand-in-hand! Set mum adrift with a spa experience in a pretty country or city setting. Select a treatment that suits mum best – a rejuvenating facial, a skinsmoothing body wrap and exfoliation, a stress-melting massage. Reflect on mum’s lifestyle and any events she may have on her calendar, and decide what you think she’d most desire. POLISHED TO PERFECTION Want to make mum feel like a queen for a day? Ensure she looks as radiant as she feels by booking her in for a full glamover treatment. A manicure and pedicure, hair blow wave and even a light make up application will leave mum feeling great about herself. LUXE LUNCH Time for some sophisticated sustenance. Does mum have a sweet tooth? Nothing says luxury like a lavish selection of petit fours, scones and ribbon sandwiches served on fine china at high tea. Perhaps a charcuterie board and Chardonnay are more mum’s vibe? Let her gaze over the vines at a beautiful winery restaurant while discovering her new favourite drop.
from relaxation to stirring her interest (and give her time to burn off lunch!). BATHING BEAUTY It’s been a big day and hopefully mum is feeling fully blissed by now. Time to chill and let her finish the day completely relaxed. Take mum home, go inside and let her unwind while you work your magic in the bathroom. Transform it into a second spa sanctuary with the Evodia Fragrance, Bath and Body Care Collection. Available in six fragrance families, Evodia offers a scent befitting of mum’s personality: from sweet and tropical Whitsunday Coconut & Lime to classic and refined Tasmanian Lavender; from fresh and floral Adelaide Hills Jasmine to elegant and feminine Victoria Rose.
The Evodia limited-edition Life’s Little Pleasures gift sets capture two of the most cherished Evodia fragrance collections in miniature favourites. The Life’s Little Pleasures collection includes:
Select mum’s favourite fragrance, then use products from the range to make mum the most luxurious bath she’s ever experienced at home. Sprinkle drops of the Body Wash into the warm bath water, have a Nourishing Soap Bar sitting beside the bath and place a Hand and Body Lotion on the bench. To really help ease mum’s body and mind and help her feel refreshed and recharged, replace the Body Wash with Evodia EpZen Magnesium Bath Crystals. Available in five fragrances as well as unscented, the bath crystals are the perfect way to end mum’s day in pure bliss.
PURELY BEAUTIFUL DUO The elegant fragrance of Tasmanian Lavender enlivens the senses in this delightful duo of Tasmanian Lavender Nourishing Soap Bar and Hand Cream.
Finish by enhancing the atmosphere with a few lit candles and small bunches of flowers to really set a pretty mood. The final touch should be a warm, fluffy towel. While she’s in the bath, place a gift of pretty pyjamas, or a cosy bath robe on her bed alongside an Evodia Life’s Little Pleasures gift set. Available in two cherished Evodia fragrance collections: Tasmanian Lavender and Victoria Rose, the gift sets are a lovely little gesture to show you care. Accompany them with a card of sweet, handwritten sentiment, expressing your love and appreciation for everything she does and everything she is. Mother’s Day perfection!
