UNITED FOR GOOD We were recently very fortunate to welcome Evert-Jan Ouweneel, Chief of Vision, World Vision Australia to our Hawthorn East offices. A Dutch social commentator and philosopher, Evert-Jan focuses on describing and documenting social trends, regularly speaking to corporate audiences across the globe. His aim is to provoke thought leadership on global issues and promote international collaboration, cross-cultural sensitivity and respect. Evert-Jan delivered a mind-expanding presentation that took us well beyond the walls of our office, past the geographical boundaries of our city, our country and the Western world to assume a global view. He discussed global trends and changes and how they’re impacting lives around the world, from economic uncertainty and ideological shifts to terrorism and climate change.

Publisher: Vitality Brands Worldwide Managing Director: James Wright Editor: Bianca Mangion Assistant Editor: Grace Andrews Design: Deanne Antao We welcome contributors. He strongly emphasised the pessimism displayed by the West about the global challenges placed before it, a fear highlighted by the rise in populism, nationalism and protectionism within Western borders. The optimism that once drove Western prosperity is now reserved for those who are seen to benefit from global shifts in power, economics and thought: the rest of the world. Western nations are accustomed to being on top, expecting continual economic, social and technological progression and resultant improvement in lifestyles. With the economic resurgence of the East (China and India), the West must be prepared for a plateauing of this constant growth. This is uncomfortable – the West is not used to the prospect of being dominated in any way by other nations. It challenges identities and creates vulnerability. Perhaps this is partly the reason there is a collective dissatisfaction among many, very prosperous people around the world. But to put it in perspective, this will not be the first time India and China take economic reign. Prior to the Industrial Revolution,

these two superpowers overwhelmingly led the global economy for thousands of years. We’re not just facing economic uncertainty across the globe. The threat of terrorism is ever-present, even if it’s just in the back of our minds. Whereas wars once had clear geographical boundaries, certain participants and a defined beginning and end, terrorism is unpredictable. It can occur any place, any time, involving civilians, lone wolves or militant political organisations. Despite this threat, we are in the longest period of peacetime in modern history. We have much to be grateful for. Humankind has achieved brilliant feats toward a better world for all. Modern medicine has eradicated major infectious diseases such as smallpox; collective actions have halted damage and helped restore the ozone layer since 1987. But there are still many more opportunities to collaborate. Transnational issues including refugees, pandemics, scarcity of drinking water, cyber and international crime, slavery, global terrorism, nuclear risks, migrations, human trafficking and scarcity of raw materials require a unified world approach. We need to turn our attention to how we can work together to make the world a safer and more prosperous place for everyone. One key pillar of Evert-Jan’s presentation was entitled “Sustainability, disaster for the weak”. He discussed how the nations most vulnerable to climate change were the same nations with the highest poverty rates per capita and the highest rates of fertility per capita. A perfect storm. He highlighted that carbon emissions are not just confined to the geographic borders of the countries in which they’re created – they affect the water and air of their neighbours thousands of kilometers away. This makes climate change everyone’s responsibility. Keep reading...

SIG N IN

There is much for which to be grateful and proud when we work together to achieve life-changing outcomes. understand the plight of these people, we cannot truly empathise with them.

But again there is good news: the world is collectively fighting climate change. We have made great pledges toward eliminating greenhouse gas emissions through the Paris Agreement, witnessing the greatest support for multinational climate action in history. The cost of solar energy generation and battery storage has dropped significantly, allowing access for billions around the world. Countries like China, Kenya and Costa Rica are creating history with their record investments into renewable energy. We are gradually slowing the rate of deforestation, while parts of Asia are planting more trees than they are cutting down. We are seeing the rise of organic agriculture in all countries and we’ve devised ways to turn salt water into drinking water and electricity. There is much for which to be grateful and proud when we work together to achieve life-changing outcomes. We can also affect change in our own countries. While division previously occurred across borders – “us and them” and the “developing and developed” – today, division and marginalisation is increasingly prevalent within one society. The disparity in education levels, income and quality of life within our own countries is, as Evert-Jan argues, set to widen as many of us do not associate outside of our own classes and communities. If we do not 4 vitality winter 2018

This “us and them” mentality can be perceived to carry through to our politicians. When marginalised groups do not feel represented by those in power, this creates division, resentment and potential unrest. Marginalised groups also include the unemployed, including those whose jobs have been superseded by automation and robotics. Evert-Jan quoted a statistic from the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs 2016: “Within three years, over 7 million jobs will globally disappear because of automation and robotics.” Despite arguments of mass workforce reskilling, many of these people will not be able to acquire new skills, and will remain unemployable. Imagine having contributed to society all of your life, then suddenly feeling you have nothing to offer. Evert-Jan asked us to envision a world where people are valued for making a non-financial contribution to society, whatever that contribution may be. This, he said, would require a large paradigm shift, but what a nice thought all the same: that our purpose is not solely to create financial value but to generate social worth.

However, to really put our achievements into perspective, consider that for the first time in history, more people are dying from eating too much food, not less food; old age instead of infectious diseases; suicide instead of soldiers, terrorists or criminals. We’ve solved major issues only to create new ones. Evert-Jan’s overarching message is that we in the West all should be grateful for the life we live. Instead of dwelling on how inevitable, global changes will impact us, we should use our advantages to collaborate and make the world a better place for all. As our vision was broadened, we were still able to draw parallels between our company values and Evert-Jan’s message. At Vitality, we believe that together we’re better. We value working collectively to achieve great outcomes – for ourselves and others. We believe strongly in influencing lives in positive ways, in leaving a positive legacy. This is our Vitality Promise. We left the presentation enthused and energised, able to see alignments between our own beliefs as individuals and a collective, and the message of this thought-provoking presentation. To learn more about World Vision, visit: worldvision.com.au

Everyone has something to offer in creating a better world. Together we have achieved remarkable social outcomes globally: • 90% of people are not living in extreme poverty • 86% have basic education or more • 96% survive the first five years of life.

INFLUENCING

positive ways LIVES IN

Keeping our Vitality Promise

At Vitality Brands, we have a Promise: We will offer products that make people feel healthier and happier. Whilst doing this, we will act ethically, respect the planet and share our profits to leave a positive social legacy. Our Promise is a guiding light, reminding the entire Vitality Brands Tribe of our purpose, what we are striving to achieve and the ways we will to do better for everyone we reach – how we will influence lives in positive ways. In each issue of Vitality Magazine, Vitality Brands Social Impact Manager Hayley Wright updates you on our progress: how our mission is coming to life through our business practices and our social impact fund, V3.

Going carbon neutral Throughout winter, households and businesses across Australia activate their heaters to fight the cold. While it feels great to be warm and cosy inside, the significant increase in demand leads to higher energy consumption and more expensive power bills. Around 80 per cent of Australian electricity comes from coal and gas, so increased energy consumption generates increased greenhouse gas emissions. At Vitality, part of every dollar we spend on electricity taken from “the grid” is used by our power company to offset our carbon emissions. This means we can happily say our electricity is carbon neutral and we’re progressing toward becoming a low emitting and low carbon business. Since the Industrial Revolution, increasing levels of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane have been released into the atmosphere. Scientists link greenhouse gases to global warming and climate change. In a bid to address this, a global effort has begun to prevent, reduce and remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and oceans. One key way is through carbon offsetting.

What is carbon offsetting? Carbon offsetting is an activity that prevents, reduces or removes greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere and oceans to compensate for an equivalent emission made elsewhere, such as burning stored carbon known as fossil fuels for electricity and transportation. A carbon offset can be achieved through “carbon credit” projects such as: Renewable energy investments: These projects prevent harmful emissions that come from the generation of energy. Of all carbon credit projects, renewable investments into wind, hydro and solar has the greatest positive impact on the environment by reducing our reliance on burning fossil fuels. Energy efficiency measures: These projects work to prevent and reduce emissions from an existing process or industry. Like renewables, establishing energy efficient industries is a high-value, preventative, carbon offsetting project. Investments in carbon sequestration: Projects such as environmental revegetation, tree planting, reforestation and seaweed farming all help remove carbon from the atmosphere and oceans. While these projects will help to rebalance atmospheric carbon, investing in preventative, zero emission energy is still the best form of carbon offsetting. Prevention is better than a cure, as they say.

What you can do Fortunately, as individuals, our carbon footprints are significantly lower than that of companies and there are a number of ways we can lead a low carbon lifestyle.

How does it work? How can we be certain that a project offsets our emissions? Many power companies that offer carbon neutral electricity to consumers for instance purchase UN Certified Emissions Reduction (CER) certificates from carbon marketplaces around the world. These certificates represent 1 metric tonne of CO2 and are sold to the market by carbon credit project following a rigorous independent verification process by a certifying body.

A world of good The benefits of carbon offsetting are not limited to preventing and reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and oceans. Carbon credit projects are driving the rapid expansion of the renewables industry around the world, while also improving and safeguarding natural habitats, protecting existing vegetation and re-establishing previously cleared areas. These projects also generate waves of positive outcomes for people around the world through the creation of jobs and income, as well as significant, direct investment in local communities from the sale of offset certificates.

Reducing your energy consumption and emissions is the first place to start. This can be achieved through: • U sing less electricity by sealing your home, installing blackout or honeycomb blinds and LED lighting and using timers on your heater.

imilarly, there are car insurance S packages that include a full offset of your car’s annual carbon emissions. Call your car insurance company to see if it provides this option to you.

• R educing your transport emissions by taking public transport, walking or driving an electric, hybrid or efficient car. • L imiting your consumption of red meat, saving food from landfill through composting and buying locally grown food.

he next step is examining T the many cost-effective investments you can make to offset high carbon activities like your home electricity and transport. This includes: • P urchase carbon neutral electricity: Take a look at The Green Electricity Guide published by Greenpeace and the Total Environment Centre. The guide lists power companies that offer carbon neutral electricity at little-to-no additional cost. • O ffset your transport: Invest some extra dollars in important Australian and global projects by selecting the offset option when you book your next flight. As the commercial aviation is a major contributing industry to global carbon emissions, an increasing number of airlines provide an offset option.

• S witch search engines: By changing your search engine to Ecosia, you can help plant trees for free while you surf the net. • B ecome a green investor: Call your superannuation and managed funds to see if they offer green investment streams that invest your money in carbon credit projects. • D onate: There are other feelgood options, like donating to not-for-profit environmental organisations like GreenFleet and Bush Heritage Australia that purchase old, cleared farmlands for native revegetation. here are many different T ways you can contribute to environmentally positive projects with very little effort. At Vitality Brands, we’re proud to be reducing and offsetting our electricity as the next step to becoming a low emitting and low carbon business. We look forward to sharing our progress with you.

V3: Our social impact fund Influencing lives in positive ways has been a constant focus for Vitality Brands. For over 15 years, we’ve achieved this by not only offering products that help people feel healthier and happier, but also by reinvesting profits back into our communities. This has been, and continues to be, a key part of the Vitality Promise.

In December 2017, Vitality launched a new community investment initiative. V3 is a social impact fund seeking to contribute positively to the lives of others. The cause is dedicated to investing in and contributing to a variety of causes and organisations aligned to the values of the three Vitality Brands Directors, as well as our Vitality Tribe. “V3 arose as we looked to expand our contribution and relationship with our communities,” Vitality Brands Managing Director James Wright explains. “Vitality has always been passionate about many causes and organisations but V3 allows us to multiply that impact.”

Executive Director Richard Meyrick adds: “V3 is a central fund that facilitates a culture of giving and community contribution throughout the entire Vitality Tribe. It enables us as owners to pursue our own passion projects, while also embracing organisations that are aligned to Vitality in its entirety.”

Vitality Directors find V3 projects of personal significance James Wright, Managing Director Project: African Kids in Need (AKIN), Kenya AKIN was founded in 2007 after the sudden closure of an orphanage, leaving hundreds of orphaned and abandoned children displaced. Since that time, AKIN has strived for every child to have the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential and participate and contribute to all aspects of the community. Through funding, mentorship and support programs, such aspirations have become a reality for hundreds of AKIN orphans. This organisation is close to James' heart. Kenyan-born, he has personally partnered with the organisation for six years to fund, mentor and support those children who have graduated from school and are transitioning into the tough, Kenyan workforce. Now with plans to develop a microloans program for students who wish to obtain credit to start their own businesses, this project is clearly influencing many young lives in positive ways.

Ian Jarman, Director Project: Surfing Victoria, Australia Ian has always believed strongly in sport and the positive outcomes it generates. In the coming months, Ian will be launching a project to promote health and wellbeing through surfing. “I have always been a passionate believer in bringing people together through sport to have fun, learn, build self-esteem and ‘mateship’. It brings out the best in the individual and the community,” Ian explains. “This soon-to-be-launched V3 project will offer a diverse range of Australian communities access to new surfing activities that directly support health and wellbeing outcomes and encourage self-empowerment.”

Richard Meyrick, Executive Director Project: Baan Nokkamin Foundation, Thailand Richard also values supporting communities to which he is particularly close. Through V3, he will continue to assist a network of orphans and homeless children in Thailand. “Having children of my own and a father who grew up and forged a life without his parents, I particularly value putting my time and effort into providing homes, education and opportunities to homeless children and orphans. It’s incredibly rewarding,” Richard states. “Our business takes me frequently to Thailand so I have a personal connection to the plight of orphaned, homeless and abandoned street children there. Using V3 as a vehicle, I am looking forward to maximising our time and resources to make a difference to the lives and opportunities of some deserving, young kids.”

Feel good food A very special event takes place this season. July 7 is World Chocolate Day – a day to celebrate and enjoy this widely-adored food. As if we needed an excuse! There are so many reasons to love heavenly cacao in its many forms – from velvety cacao powder to smooth, creamy chocolate, nothing feeds our indulgent side more than the bounty of the mighty Theobroma cacao pod. This literally is the food of the gods as its name suggests: In ancient Greek, theo means god and broma means food. What a fitting title!

Cacao and its derivatives not only taste divine – especially as a wonderful, winter pickme-up; they also offer many nutritional benefits: namely a group of antioxidant compounds called cocoa polyphenols which can be great for our health. Cocoa polyphenols are a group of naturally occurring antioxidants that form part of the plant’s defence system against external stressors such as pathogens, predators and UV light. One group of these polyphenol antioxidant compounds are cocoa flavonoids, which have been the subject of several studies investigating their benefits on cardiovascular health. It is now recognised that cocoa flavonoids may have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular health, blood pressure and healthy cholesterol levels.

brain where it acts as a messenger chemical – having an effect on pain, appetite, mood and memory. It stimulates canabanol receptors in the brain, producing feelings of delight and joy. Indeed, the name is derived from a Sanskrit word ananada meaning bliss. No wonder we feel so good when we eat chocolate! In addition to the myriad benefits from phytochemicals, cacao is also one of the highest food sources of magnesium, a mineral involved in over 600 reactions in our bodies. Magnesium is a vital electrolyte, essential for cellular energy production and optimal functioning of the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Cacao is also a good source of minerals iron, potassium and chromium.

At over 25 per cent protein, cacao is also a source of plant based protein and dietary fibre, the latter accounts for over 40 per cent of the total weight of the powder. The health benefits of cacao far exceed the sum of these nutrients, and may further extend to improved cardiovascular health, improved mood and even skin health. Furthermore, epidemiological studies have shown that the relationship is dose dependent, meaning higher consumption may result in a greater benefit. It is important to note that not all cacao or cocoa products are created equal – some chocolate is high in sugar and should be consumed only in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

To put that in perspective, cacao powder has greater antioxidant capacity than green tea and red wine. Cacao also contains two chemicals termed “bliss” chemicals. Phenylethylamine (PEA), is produced naturally by the body when we are excited and when we fall in love. Some studies have also shown it may be helpful in relieving stress and increasing alertness. Innovator in the wellness industry Power Super Foods has been known for decades for providing Australians with the finest-quality, nutrient-dense superfoods. Highly functional, the superfoods in the range are time-honoured by cultures across the globe – revered for centuries for their health-promoting properties. Consistently drawing upon this ancient wisdom, Power Super Foods continues to introduce new and exciting superfood products to meet modern health and lifestyle needs. A great example is new Booster Blends. One of the biggest challenges we face with so many amazing superfoods available is deciding which ones to choose, when to choose them and how to get them all into our daily diets.

In such circumstances it may be beneficial to increase our intake of antioxidants to stifle free radicals and restore the natural balance in our cells. Many plants contain antioxidants but not all are created equal. Power Super Foods selected four of the most potent, free radicalscavenging fruit powders from around the world and brought them together in one, convenient blend. It includes:

Baobab Baobab fruit powder from Malawi is high in antioxidant polyphenols, and boasts an ORAC (a measure of antioxidant capacity) value of 140,000 umolTE/100g. To put that into perspective, blueberries have an ORAC of around 10,000 umolTE/100g.

In response to this, the team of naturopaths and nutritionists at Power Super Foods has developed three, perfect blends of Certified Organic, ethicallysourced, plant-based ingredients to deliver the ultimate boost of nutrients to support health and wellbeing. The range includes Booster Blend Recovery with potassium, nitrates and iodine to help replenish vital nutrients; and Booster Blend Digestion with insoluble dietary fibre, prebiotic soluble dietary fibres, resistant starch and digestive enzymes to support bowel health and digestion. The recipe spread over the following pages features Booster Blend Immunity. With a refreshing, citrusy taste accented with a hum of spice, Booster Blend Immunity lends an exciting flavour while offering some serious, immunity-boosting ingredients. This potent blend of antioxidants is supercharged with more antioxidants, plus vitamin C and vitamin A to support the immune system. Free radical production is a natural part of life – every time we breathe, eat or move, free radicals are produced in our cells. Our body has natural defences against free radicals, and on top of the antioxidants produced by our body, a healthy diet that includes a good variety of colourful, plant-based foods should provide many of the antioxidants required to quench these free radicals.

Acerola berry A native to Central America, acerola berry is one of the highest known sources of vitamin C. At a whopping 17 per cent of their total dry weight, these little guys can provide a big immune boost.

Maqui berries Maqui berries are a Power Super Foods favourite. They have one of the highest known ORAC values of any fruit at over 500,000umolTE/100g. Maqui also provides vitamin A and carotenoids: important, immune boosting nutrients.

Tasmanian pepperberry A native Australian shrub whose tiny berries pack a serious antioxidant punch, Tasmanian pepperberries have a slightly piquant flavour. The pepperberries Power Super Foods uses are sustainably wild harvested from pristine Australian forests.

Many lifestyle factors such as stress, pollution, poor food choices, smoking, alcohol, certain medications and excessive exercise can contribute to excessive production of free radicals in our body.

Ready to blend some Immunity into your day? With a refreshing, slightly spiced flavour, this fine powder can be used in smoothies, juices, breakfast bowls and yoghurt or just mixed with water.

If our body’s natural defences are overwhelmed, oxidative stress can occur. Oxidative stress can lead to the oxidation of lipids, proteins and even DNA in our cells, which can limit their proper functioning, including the cells of our immune system.

Hello hydration

Skin needs special care in winter when external factors affect its hydration levels. As Vitality Brands Training, Education and Product Manager Lauren Burton explains, there are some simple steps to help keep skin hydrated and looking healthy throughout winter and beyond.

28 vitality winter 2018

THE SKIN YOU'R E IN

The primary cause of dehydration is lack of water. There are many factors, internal and external, that contribute to dehydration. Internal factors take place within the body and are affected by diet, coffee and alcohol intake, and exercise. External factors include artificial heating and cooling and weather conditions. While you can control how you treat your body, you can’t often control what goes on around it. The drop of temperature and humidity in winter means there is less moisture in the air and this leaves skin more exposed to elements like artificial heating. Humidity helps protect skin, enhancing its natural moisturising factors. With dryer conditions in winter, the skin’s protective barrier may be impaired and this can lead to dryness and/or dehydration. Hydrated skin is healthy-looking skin. This is because water helps to support and plump the skin’s structure. When the skin is dehydrated, it emphasises the appearance of common skin concerns like sagging, fine lines, wrinkles, redness, dryness or tightness and sensitivity. All skin types can be prone to dehydration, oily skin is not immune! “Oily” or “dry” are skin types, mostly genetic and determined by the amount of oil the skin produces. Your skin type is something you can control with skincare, but not change. Dehydration however, is a skin condition, caused by a lack of water. Any skin type can be dehydrated but this can be improved with diet and correct skincare. That’s good news because dehydrated skin can pose more serious threats to skin health beyond its appearance. The main function of the skin is protection. It protects us from external factors like UV radiation and infection, eliminates the body of harmful toxins, prevents water loss and regulates our body temperature. When the skin is chronically dehydrated, the skin’s natural protective barrier may be damaged, leaving it feeling flaky and exposed to irritation and bacteria. Some of the long-term concerns could be acne, sensitivity and even rosacea. When the body is dehydrated, it can inhibit the skin’s ability to function optimally. The signs of internal dehydration are thirst, dry mouth, headaches and feeling “foggy”.

function and regulate hydration in our cells. They include calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and chloride. To quickly and easily balance your electrolytes, mix a tablespoon of Power Super Foods Booster Blend Recovery, available from good health food stores, into water or your favourite smoothie. This premium, plant-based blend contributes to water and electrolyte balance, with ingredients like beetroot, goji berry, camu camu and wakame leaf. Once you’re hydrated from the inside, you can concentrate on maintaining your skin’s hydration levels with good skincare. Ideally, your skincare should be modified with the change of season to ensure it is adequately protected. In winter, moisturisers containing humectants are the ones to go for. These are ingredients that bind water to themselves. They help increase and maintain moisture levels of the skin by preventing water loss. Some well-known humectants are aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Try the UV-iQ SPF50+ Facial Sunscreen Hydrating Collection, available from Chemist Warehouse. Its hero ingredient is Hydrovtion® 24 which contains eight moisturising factors that naturally occur in the skin, providing instant, buildable hydration. Additional hydration helps to plump and smooth the skin, minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This formula also includes vitamin E, known to help maintain natural moisture in the skin.

To combat dehydration through diet, start by drinking at least eight glasses of water each day. Fruits and vegetables are also high in water so incorporating more fresh produce in your daily diet is a good way to help stay hydrated.

To accelerate the benefits of your hydrating skincare, try exfoliating 2-3 times a week. This will help remove the build up of dry or dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, preparing it for maximum absorption of hydrating ingredients from your moisturiser, allowing them to penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

Regularly replenishing your electrolytes is also a great way to prevent water loss and maintain balanced hydration. Electrolytes are positively and negatively charged minerals that assist with muscle and nerve

Making some simple changes to your diet and skincare routine in winter can help you maintain beautiful, well-hydrated skin that’s protected from the inside out.

Bathe your cares away Winter is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a night in; a night centred around you indulging in the things you enjoy most. Grace Andrews is here to help you relax.

EM OTION A L WELLBEING

With busy lives filled with hectic work schedules and family commitments, a little time to escape the outside world and its chilly, winter depths is just what your mind, body and soul needs. To indulge in a little me-time during your next night in, consider creating an at-home day spa experience to give yourself some quality relaxation time. Just 30-60 minutes is all you need to experience the feeling of rejuvenation that comes with allowing your mind, body and soul to momentarily escape. To create your own private day spa, be sure to plan ahead. Turn off all devices and let your family know that tonight, you’ll be taking some time to yourself – you don’t want to be interrupted! Next, ensure you have all you need to maximise on your indulgent night in. Write a list of everything you may require and prepare it in advance. This may include: • A clean, fluffy towel and face washer • A playlist of your favourite, calming music • Scented candles • A luxurious bath robe and slippers, to stay warm at the end of your experience • Your favourite magazine or a good book • A glass of your favourite drop • Some quality bath salts like Evodia EpZen Premium Magnesium Bath Crystals to fill your bathtub. Evodia EpZen is the perfect accompaniment to a bath time soak as it provides the benefit of magnesium bath crystals with natural essential oils to invigorate, relax or stimulate your senses. While the length of your pamper time can extend for as long as your heart desires, 30 minutes is all you need to soak up the benefits of Evodia EpZen. In this time, it can work its magic in helping to relax muscles, soften skin and relieve stress. Unlike many other bath salts, Evodia EpZen helps to relax muscles and soften skin through the soothing action of a naturally occurring compound of magnesium and sulphate. These ingredients are known for their ability to soothe tired, sore muscles, with studies showing that magnesium and sulphate are both readily absorbed through the skin.

Evodia EpZen Premium Magnesium Bath Crystals are available in six blends: Pure, Escape, Uplift, Relax, Soothe and Indulge. Find Evodia EpZen in Priceline, selected Myer stores, pharmacies and health food stores nationwide. EpZen is also available online: evodia.com.au.

To enjoy the maximum health benefit of Evodia EpZen, when preparing your day spa, dissolve two cups in a bathtub. While the bathtub is filling, lay out your fluffy towel and face washer, light your candles, play your music, and place your robe and slippers to the side of the bath.

Now that you’re in and immersed in your very own day spa, take a few minutes to focus on the moment and quieten other thoughts. Then reach for your reading material and allow yourself to relax, unwind and enjoy your blissful escape.

Once the bathtub is full and the Evodia EpZen has dissolved, dim the lights and ease your way into the comforting warmth of the water. Have your book or magazine within reach, alongside your drink.

FIT FOR LIFE

Just keep running

A runner wasn’t built in a day. Challenges lie on the road ahead. Being aware and preparing yourself for these hurdles will put you into the right mindset to persevere. Performance Coach Sharon Disney is here to cheer you on from the sidelines.

FIT FOR LIFE

You’ve decided to start running – maybe to lose weight, live a healthier lifestyle or enter an event. Chances are you’ll probably quit in the near future. Wait, what? That isn’t overly motivating! It’s probably not what you wanted to hear but it’s the honest truth. Running isn’t always linear progress. It’s hard when you begin, especially if you didn’t have the right motivation from the onset. But if you know which obstacles lie ahead and you have the right attitude, you may just be able to stick with it. Let’s explore some of these obstacles.

I’m busy This is easily the number one reason people stop running. And let’s be honest, it’s just a poor excuse. Yes, between work, family and social engagements, there’s a lot to juggle, leaving little time for your new-found hobby. But being busy shouldn’t trump your dreams of being a runner! An early morning run before life kicks in is the perfect time to get up, clear your head and start the day off right. Just 20-30 minutes per day a few times a week and you’ll start getting into the new habit and seeing the health benefits. Trust me, an extra 30 minutes in bed won’t make you feel much better.

I have injuries

nutrition and cross training can all help, and rest days shouldn’t be missed.

It’s too cold/too hot The chill of winter, the draining heat of summer – both seem like legitimate excuses not to run, right? Wrong! You have options: in winter, you can suck it up and dress appropriately. In summer, you can time your runs to avoid the heat of the day. Across both seasons, you can always use a treadmill.

No motivation This happens to newbies who make lofty goals right off the bat. Planning to run 30km a week or do a marathon in the first year of training all sound good in theory, and not to say it’s impossible, but when reality sets in, the task often becomes too difficult, and you’ll decide to throw in the towel. Start with a practical goal like training for a 5km or running 2-3 days a week and work your way up. And on days when you really don’t feel like running, shorten your session and imagine yourself at the end of the run – you’ll feel a whole lot better having done the run than having skipped it.

It’s hard That’s right. Unlike sitting on the couch or sleeping in, running is an activity that tests not only your cardiovascular system but your mental strength.

Injuries will arise and it’s important to listen to your body when they do. The key to avoiding injury is to start off slowly, build your aerobic foundation first and do strength training sessions to work on your weaknesses.

Start with a walk/run program instead of telling yourself that you must run ‘x’ amount of Ks that day. Acknowledge that the first few months will be hard but know that if you stick with it, eventually it does get easier.

Exercises to help with pelvis stability, improve posture and build strength are key to keeping the body moving freely.

When I first started, my lungs would burn, I’d get stitches all the time, I could hardly do a lap of the park without having to stop, and to make it

Understand that proper rest and recovery is a necessary part of the process. Stretching, yoga, good

worse, my new running buddy would leave me for dead every run. But it did get easier and the kick you get out of making it around without stopping that first time is amazing!

I get bored You put on your shoes and head out to run the same loop you did the day before and the day before that. You run the same distance at the same pace, exerting the same amount of energy. That would drive anyone insane! Don’t underestimate the importance of varying your route, distance and speed – mix it up. Another great option is to join a running group. The idea can be somewhat intimidating if you’re just starting out but you’ll be surprised that more than likely there’ll be a few of you in the same boat. People in running groups are so supportive and encouraging. It doesn’t matter if you come last and often sessions can be tailored to individual abilities. I got invited to join a group of marathoners to do a track session. Thinking it would be fun and that I’d hold my own, I got lapped! These guys looked like gazelles when they ran and their sprints looked effortless. (I’m more of a stubborn staffy chasing a ball.) Once they’d finished they all stayed at the finish line and cheered me on and we all got a drink together afterwards. At no point did they make me feel like I didn’t belong. So if you’re thinking about tossing it all in and using one of these excuses, don’t. Accept that these issues will arise and it’s a matter of choice: you can decide it’s too hard or you can actually keep trying. Run coaches are great for this reason as they can swat away your excuses and show you what you really can achieve if you put your mind to it.
