SPRAOI International Street Arts
F E S T I VA L
WATERFORD CITY August 2nd 3rd 4th
Welcome to the Spraoi Festival The thing about street arts is that it enables all of society to truly come together and experience the arts in all its varied manifestations. To marvel at circus, spectacle and dance. To listen and enjoy music. To be entertained, to be inspired, and to do this in the company of all, young and old, with no economic barriers or social divisions. In these days of uncertainty and strife, this ability to speak to all has never been more important.
Enjoy and be part of the Spraoi Festival Mike Leahy Artistic Director
Spraoi Parade 2019 More than two thirds of the surface of the earth is covered by ocean, but only a tiny fraction of it has been explored. This deep and mysterious realm is teeming with life and wonders that we can only dream of. That is, until now! A group of intrepid explorers have searched the depths and discovered astonishing things! They have curated a selection of the creatures and phenomena they found, and this is your chance to wonder at the mysteries and marvels they uncovered. A psychedelic creation, unleashed onto the streets and quays of Waterford City. Join Spraoi on Sunday evening for an unforgettable experience.

There are fixed ambulance points along the route, which our stewards will guide you towards, if required.

FRIDAY
Focus On Irish Street Arts
Spraoi launches late afternoon Friday with the focus firmly on Irish street arts.
Spraoi’s policy, over the last number of years, of supporting and developing new Irish work, through the NEST initiative, and the emphasis on presenting Irish premieres at Spraoi has helped to assist the burgeoning of the street arts sector in Ireland. This year Spraoi sees no less than four Irish companies present work at the festival, as well as the artists presenting developing work on the NEST Stage. Two previous NEST participants, Henrik Gard and Severine de Maleingreau, return to perform with their new companies, Síolta Circus and Feathers Ensemble, while The Fanzinis return with a brand new show, “Spailp”, and Curious State present a new take on their show “Morbid and Sons”. The NEST Stage, which runs on Friday and Saturday evenings, showcases work from Laura Ivers and Human Collective, and this year has a particular focus on dance.

“We are bodies in the city. Constantly moving in it, with it, because of it. What if we chose stillness instead? Would we integrate or resist? Would it enable or restrict us?”
Formed in 2018, Síolta Circus are inspired to break the mould for a circus company and bring the enjoyment of high skill ground based circus to the streets. They fuse diverse art forms such as dance, music , theatre and circus to tell stories that embrace and captivate.
A new body of experiential work from The Fanzini Spailpínis. A brief but glorious experience of your life’s most exquisite moments inside their beautiful bespoke venue. Spailp is a show for 5 minutes for 5 people at a time for ages 5 and over.

Skin on stones, bricks under bones; watch tales emerge and questions raise in this promenade performance as they stand still in an ever-moving city. Please note: This is a promenade performance. Please assemble at Reginalds Tower, The Quay, 15 minutes before each performance time. A spoken word, dance and hoop manipulation street performance piece philosophically exploring themes of virtuosity, artistic heritage and tradition, death, personal growth and awe.
A new work, exploring complex relationships, the search for self and the power shift within friendship. Influenced by the writing of Charles Bukowski, this tangled piece of dance examines the nuance of blame and shame. By observing the points of intersection between these two states, do we eventually find balance?
For 2019 the NEST acts are under the mentorship of Jan Patzke and Olivia Quayle from the renowned UK dance circus company, Joli Vyann, who have performed their own shows many times at Spraoi.
A Dublin based circus artist, director and producer, originally with an education to MA level in Philosophy, Laura self trained in circus and has worked professionally in the circus arts sector for over 8 years. Baba Yaga’s House Dizzy O’Dare UK
Stick-Stok TeaTime Company IRL/BEL/NL
Stick-Stok is an ode to modern society. We built these sticks to jump higher, to propel ourselves further, to move faster. Now we cannot stop them, we try and we fail. We adapt to them and use them to our advantage but in the end perhaps they are just using us.
Are you brave enough to find Baba Yaga‘s House? This ramshackle old cottage roams the land on chicken legs, while Baba Yaga flies across the landscape in her giant pestle and mortar. After centuries asleep, Baba Yaga flies again… and she’s hungry! The old crone will stop at nothing to find a feast while Izba, her house, trundles behind. Inspired by Slavic fairy tales, Dizzy O’Dare bring this unique story to life in a charming walkabout show. į Please follow any directions given by, and be courteous to, our stewards. They are there in a voluntary capacity for the safety of both the audience and the performers. į If you can at all, Sit Down! It really does mean more people get to see the shows. į For situations involving lost children, please go to the nearest steward. They will contact the Spraoi Child Welfare Officers. į There are two SE2 information points, one in JR Sq., and one on the Mall. į The Order of Malta are on duty all weekend, so if you do require first aid ask a Spraoi Steward to locate the closest one.
