River Cocรณ - Portal Museum Fortaleza, Brazil - 2014.1 Selected for EXPO - semestral course exhibition at Universidade Federal do Cearรก . As part of the discipline: Architectonic Project 6, students were challenged to propose a Portal Museum nearby River Cocรณ, situated in the biggest urban park in Latin America. The objective of such project was to create a public institution binding together educational and cultural purposes along with leisure and research.

The river Cocรณ is an important hydric resource of the state of Cearรก, Brazil. Crossing 4 municipalities over its 50km length, the river flows until its delta at the coast of the city of Fortaleza. Despite its significance, both environmental and economical, the area lacks of infrastructures, funds and attractions leading to several problems, underlining: the pollution of natural resources, invasion of protected reserves, poor communication between urban tissue and the park, dangerous and abandoned areas. In order to minimize the impact on protected areas and house the entire program of the building, the design concept was developedas a modular structure, able to adapt to different levels and types of soil.

The main idea was to predict a future replication of this structure allowing an expansion of the museum into nature and not only in the designated site, reiterating the connection between people and the environment. Also, in such approach, the museum should be able to better connect to the existent - yet incipient - equipments of the park.

City Hall of Porto Alegre Porto Alegre, Brazil - 2014 Competition Entry In collaboration with REDE Arquitetos , the team designed a nearly 6.000m² building to house the new headquarters of Porto Alegre’s City Hall, predicting fluid workspaces and a connection between the old structure and its surroundings. My role was to support and develop ideas since early sketches until its completion, giving special attention to the resolution of the program, landscape design and production of images.

Extrusion and distribution of the program conditioned the choice for a 4-storey building.

To improve ventilation and illumination of workspaces, an open atrium was established in the middle of the building.

Vertical brises were thought to provide protection from insulation and enable cross ventilation.

Green roofs proposed to help the maintenance of temperature inside the building and also to make profit of rainwater reuse system.

Urbanization of Verdes Mares Community Fortaleza, Brazil - 2016 Nominated as one of 21 “Best Graduation Projects of Brazil and Portugal” by ARCHDAILY BRAZIL, 2016. Web link at “Bibliography” The housing deficit is perhaps the most approached problem by urbanists and researchers of the field in Brazil. The country lacks over 5.2 million dwellings (PNAD, 2012), situation that is mainly perceived inside important urban centers. In such context, informal settlements spread more and more, partly as a cause and/or an effect of gentrification and social segregation. Observing these dynamics inside the city of Fortaleza, my final dissertation attempts to find answers to such problems by studying urban policies, analyzing and experiencing life inside a poor community and finally proposing a design not as an end, but as a mean to assist people achieving, most of all, basic human rights, dignity and social integration.

According to the city´s subdivision plan, the main four cores of the community are situated at public land for about 40-50 years. Nowadays, the area is considered a Special Zone of Social Interest (ZEIS), where social integration and land regularization should be taken as a priority. However, speculations over two subway stations to be constructed in the area and the rise of real sate value mainly due to the establishment of a Public

Private Partnership nearby - threatens the locals of future eviction and gentrification. With its 2280 inhabitants distributed into 692 dwellings, the population occupies about 80% of the entire land available. This causes the overcharge of infrastructure, compromising the access to illumination, ventilation, water, drainage and sewage systems.

The proposal then tried to ally a process of design with urban policies and legal strategies. The plan consisted of an integration of the community to the urban tissue of the surroundings, creating pedestrianized paths, public equipments and social housing with broad community participation.

Equipments Equipments were conceived to foster social integration through the empowerment of public institutions and the improvement of public spaces, but also by supporting local activities such as labor, leisure and cultural mobilization.

Land regularization and resettlement In order to regularize and improve housing conditions, many actions took place, resulting in the resettlement of a substantial number of housing units. Though its vast rate - 45% - it is important to highlight that almost 39% of the total was due to the proposal of the subway stations, which this project did not want to disregard. Thus, an alternative for the simple complete removal of the community was set. Social Housing Five kinds of housing units were planned with the main goal of giving support to the soon to be removed families, varying their typologies, construction strategies, zoning and participation. They were all established to solve the deficit caused by the process of land regularization, achieving a surplus of 2 housing units and 21 services/commerce units.
