RESUME

A FEW WORDS

TIMELINE

Should I risk a brief description of architecture, I would certainly refer to the vitruvian principles of firmitas (solidity), utilitas (functionality) and venustas (beauty), while adding one more crucial quality: civitas. The architect’s actions over space may catalyse important changes within the living environment, therefore he or she has a great responsibility towards society, a civic responsibility, which must be considered during the process that forms the project. In this regard, I take as example the engagement of Oscar Niemeyer, who, both as a citizen and as an architect, always called for societal awareness in an increasingly socially contrastive world.

URBANISM

MAPPING INFORMALITY PARTICIPATIVE EXPERIMENTS IN SÃO PAULO

ABOUT Facing the complex reality of fast growing metropolitan areas, emerging countries have shown little success in keeping track of important changes happening in their own territories. All around the World, a large number of people is marginalized, as, failing to appear in the official records, they are virtually non-existent and deprived of many basic rights, amongst which the «right to the city». In order to include «informal» urban areas and their inhabitants into the process of town planning, it becomes necessary to re-evaluate the very concepts of city-making and spatial representation. This is an overview of a VGI experiment elaborated in association with NGO Techo, in São Paulo, where «informal» settlements are being mapped through a participative system. FROM FORDISM TO POST-FORDISM SOCIAL TENSIONS OVER SPACE IN SÃO PAULO

ABOUT Since the 2000’s, changes in the socio-economic dynamics of São Paulo suggest that both people and capital are moving back to the historical centre, after a long period of disinvestment. This transition does not happen without tensions, because, at the core of this process, we find a number of poor residents living in state of precariousness, whose very presence seems to counter the ambitions of «urban renewal» projects promoted by the narratives of «global city» and «city marketing». In this context, and based on the «revanchist» urban strategy of capital as described by Neil Smith, rises the hypothesis of local processes of gentrification in the centre of São Paulo, which we have evaluated by observing changes both in the social fabric and in the real estate market in that area. INDUSTRIAL AREAS IN TICINO QUANTIFYING POTENTIAL FOR REDEVELOPMENT

ABOUT This work was carried out under a mandate of the Ticino canton (Italian speaking state of the Swiss Confederation), and consisted of an extensive survey of all the canton’s industrial areas, as defined by the local zoning regulations. The main goal was to quantify unused land and derelict structures situated in such locations; the resulting data allowed therefore to identify areas that haven’t fully met their use potential, and could be prone to redevelopment projects. The survey also provided us with some unexpected findings, namely a relevant amount of buildings not charted in the cadastral plans, as well as a significant number of unused buildings that were in a good state. We collected data on-site, following a methodology we elaborated, based on mobile GIS technologies. METROPOLIS WITHOUT DENSITY MASTER-I DESIGN STUDIO, PROF. FREEK PERSYN

ABOUT What alternative to the present mobility model of the «diffuse city»? In the Camposampierese Union (Veneto), the personal automobile colonises public space while the sparse built environment paradoxically ignores the surrounding landscape, failing to establish any active spatial relations with it. Aiming to foster interaction with (in) outside spaces, as well as social encounters, this project proposes an alternative mobility web, favouring the transit of pedestrians, cyclists and also small, «green» vehicles. The design consists in a flexible system based on pre-existing rural paths (greenways), determined under common agreement between citizens. The new mobility web is extendable throughout the Camposampierese and even further, and it improves the connectedness between town centres and other points of interest (like agriturismo sites), offering an alternative to the present mobility model. FROM INDUSTRY TO HOUSING PARALLEL STUDY FOR AN URBAN PROJECT

ABOUT This master plan was elaborated for a parallel study commissioned by the city of Bulle and two private investors who wanted to transform a formerly industrial site into a residential area. The proposed scheme approached simultaneously the scales of the city and that of the architectural object: the urban strategy shaped the new residential buildings, which were arranged in a way to enhance the quality and accessibility of the surrounding public spaces; the plan resulting from this strategy was structured by a pedestrian boulevard leading to preexisting green areas (clearly undervalued at the time) that could be activated as they became more accessible, turning into a new public space made available for the whole neighbourhood. The disposition of the buildings - organised in two clusters with accesses slightly elevated from the ground-floor level - also established a transition between public and private spaces.

GARDERIE LES CHATTONS NEW SPACES FOR A KINDERGARTEN IN RENENS

ABOUT This project answered to the expansion needs of Les Chattons kindergarten in order to keep up with the increasing number of families needing daily care for their babies. Situated on the ground-floor of a residential building in Renens, the work site had to be adapted to a rather complex context: besides the gripping challenge of intervening in an existing structure, the impact on the inhabitants’ daily lives had to be limited and the preexisting area of the kindergarten had to keep functioning. To ensure delivery within a tight schedule (six months), the project counted on the use of prefabricated elements, conceived by a thorough study of the constructional details, thus combining quality and time-efficiency. The resulting façade plays, materially, with the duality between exterior and interior; resistant metallic elements cover the outside, while a wooden structure composes the inside elevation, contributing to warmer atmosphere.

URBAN ACUPUNCTURE IN POBLE-SEC, BARCELONA DIPLOMA, PROFS. MARIANNE BURKHALTER & CHRISTIAN SUMI

ABOUT Based on Sola-Morales’ concept of urban acupuncture, this project investigated the possibilities given by the insertion of one object (a building) into the urban tissue; that is, the ability of a single material intervention in the city to have societal outcomes that reach a larger perimeter than the one of the single building. The site enjoyed the presence of a square frequented by various groups of people, so the project explored ways to interact with this lively space through a building typology open to the square. The project also combined diverse functions (housing, dance school, theatre and commerce) within one building, which became an urban block itself. Such strategy aimed to enhance the ground-floor conditions, as it offered new services (a cafÊ, a shop, or simply additional places to sit protected from the strong Catalan sun). In this way, the project reaffirmed the quality of the public space as a social articulator - an important element considering Poble-Sec had been suffering from social tensions at that time.

ARCHITECTURE FOR ALL, RIO DE JANEIRO BACHELOR-III DESIGN STUDIO, PROF. CAMILO REBELO

ABOUT A museum of contemporary art at the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon (Lagoa), in Rio de Janeiro. Conceived in a context of striking social segregation, the project proposed to incorporate a studio specifically reserved to encourage and promote art among individuals coming from disadvantaged social milieus, as cultural activities can foster social articulation and may be an effective tool against delinquency. Because of its singular position, over the lagoon, this project found its inspiration in the Brazilian water-lily, which graciously dominates the water and is also part of the local folklore. The museum’s structure reflected therefore the plant’s system: its roots supported a platform that could stand substantial load, while the museum’s plan symbolized a growing movement starting from the shore, much like a stem, from which growing branches received each one a part of the programme. During our field trip, we had the chance to meet architect Oscar Niemeyer, who received us at his office in Copacabana for a stimulating talk on architecture.
