Ukraine has celebrated the 23rd anniversary of Independence

No sight-seeing in Uzhgorod can do without mini-sculptures that fit harmoniously into the landscape of the city, and tell us about the history, traditions and peculiarities of the region.

Mini-sculpture of Schweik, the Soldier It should be noted that the minisculpture of Schweik is situated on the historic fragment of the railing, on Kyivska embankment. It is the place where the relics of the World War II - bullet holes have remained. Interestingly, the miniature soldier Schweik holds not weapons, but a knedlik, a traditional Czech pastry dish. Schweok looks somewhere in the direction of the Carpathians or salutes. The famous slogan that symbolizes Schweik says ÂŤSchweik is a soldier that brings peace.Âť

The colorful Festival Holi. Paint the country in new colors! The Festival of colors Holi is a huge quantity of dry multi-colored paint and a lot of people who are ready to be colored and color all around. Red, blue, yellow, pink, turquoise, purple, green, orange — the festival participants create their own rainbow! One can say without exaggeration that August, 30 was the highlights of this summer — the Festival of colors Holiwood 2014. The event was held simultaneously in three cities: Kharkiv (Arsenal stadium), Dnipropetrovsk (the Monastic Island) and Lviv (Youth Stadium). The motto of the festival is: «No limitations and restraints! Let’s paint our country in new colors!» The mission of the Festival of colors was to unify Ukraine, demonstrate the universal values and culture for all people, regardless of the place of residence, ethnicity, traditions, and to raise the cultural level of citizens of Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Lviv, promote active youth and family entertainment, healthy lifestyle. This is probably the brightest way to spend the last days of summer. The essence of the festival is simple: paint your neighbor. And of course, you will change your natural color as well. Therefore, it is desirable to come to such an event in white, so the whole set of colors may be seen clearly. One could paint any participant of the festival, take part in competitions and workshops, win prizes, listen to the foot tapping music of contemporary artists from all over the country and make new friends. The participants of the event held in Kharkiv gladly shared their impressions: «For me this holiday is full of fun and good humor. I usually come here with friends, it is a good way to spend time unconventionally. It was my third festival and I will definitely come again, because I am so impressed, people are happy, the atmosphere is so friendly and kind,» the already multi-colored girl Kateryna said. «It’s very bright, very colorful, very heartfelt. I enjoy it like a child. I thank the organizers for ending summer in such a wonderful way,» the colorful participant of the festival Oleksiy shared with us. Those who came to the Festival of colors Holi spent the last days of the sunny summer brightly and cheerfully and got a colorful boost of energy for the whole autumn.

Interesting facts: The organizers of this colorful event were encouraged by Holi festival. It is an Indian folk festival in honor of the incoming of spring. It is celebrated for 2 days at the full moon. In our multi-ethnic country where many different cultures, languages, religions and gods, traditions and customs peacefully coexist with each other, there are more than enough spring holidays, but Holi is unique in its own way. It is dedicated to the god of love Kāmadeva whose bow, according to the traditional Hindu iconography, is made of sugar cane, the arrows - of flower stems and the string consists of a swarm of bees. Independence Day of The Republic of Moldova

75 years ago World War II started

On 27 of August, 1991, the Parliament of Moldova confirmed the text of the Declaration of Independence of the country. Moldova became independent from the USSR after the Baltic states, Georgia, Ukraine and Armenia. Now the country celebrates Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova on 27 of August.

75 years ago, on 1/09/1939, a week after the Treaty of Nonaggression with the USSR, also known as the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, was signed, the Nazi Germany broke in the territory of Poland starting World War II. On 1 of September 1939 at 4.45 AM about a million and a half of German soldiers entered the territory of Poland along the whole length of its border that was almost 3000 kms. At the same time the German aviation started bombing Polish airdromes while warships and submarines attacked Polish navy bases in the Baltic Sea. The Nazi leader Adolf Hitler named this operation a defensive one, but Great Britain and France interfered in the conflict and declared war on Germany on 3 of September. That started World War II. To neutralize possible interference of the USSR, on 23 of August 1939 Germany signed the Treaty of Non-aggression and a secret protocol that divided the territory of Poland. Nazis were to have attacked Poland on 26 of August, but they delayed the attack after Hitler heard about signing a military treaty between Britain and Poland. To imitate Polish aggression towards Germany Nazi propaganda used the problem of German-speaking population allegedly oppressed in Poland and the attack on a German border town made by SS-men wearing the Polish uniform. That was the scenario, in some way known to Ukrainians at first hand, according to which the most widespread war conflict in human history started. In the morning of 1 of September the occupation of Poland began. On 2 of September Britain and France, under the threat of declaring war, called Germany to withdraw troops from the Polish territory.

On the international level Moldova was recognized by other states in December, 1991. The cause for it was the breakup of the Soviet Union and signing the Belavezha Accords. Among the first ones to recognize the Republic of Moldova were the United States of America. In course of time the country joined a new international association – the CIS. In 1992 it became a member of the UN and the OSCE. Then Moldova was admitted to the Council of Europe and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. Not so long ago the country joined the World Trade Organization. Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova is always celebrated in the country in a very solemn way. There is always a celebration prayer service in the church. This day they commemorate those who were victims of the War of Transnistria. The central squares of the cities host traditional meetings and parades.

An American posted millions of historical images An American researcher is creating a gigantic database consisting of 12 million of historical images, making it possible for everyone to use it as they wish to. Up to this moment Kalev Leetaru has posted 2.6 million images in the social network Flickr. Thanks to the automatically placed tags the database allows to make a search through all the images. Photos and pictures were taken from more than 600 milliom book pages scanned in libraries by the organization Internet Archive. According to Kalev Leetaru, the majority of illustrations saved in the books cannot be found in any gallery in the world as the originals had been lost long time before. Images posted in Flickr cover the period from 1500 to 1922, the time when restrictions connected to copyrights come into force.

On 3 of September at 11.15 AM, fifteen minutes after the British ultimatum expired, the Prime Minister of Great Britain Neville Chamberlain declared via national radio that Britain was entering the war with Germany. It was supported by Australia, New Zealand and India. At 3 PM sharp France declared war on Germany as well. On 22 of June, 1941, Hitler, in violation of the Treaty of Nonaggression, attacked the USSR and occupied all the territory of Poland. World War II became the bloodiest tragedy of the humankind. It inflicted tremendous human and material losses on the peoples of the world. Hostilities took place on the territory of 40 countries. Armed forces mobilized 110 million people all over the world. The number of victims has not been determined yet. According to rough estimates, 60 million people died in the war, 90 million were made invalids. Military spending and losses were 4 trillion USD. 3

Festive August 8/08 - International Alpinism Day

9/08 - International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

International Alpinism Day is traditionally celebrated on August 8, it unites real men and confident women. We owe this holiday to the two brave Swiss who conquered Mont Blanc. On this day in 1786, they were the first of all climbers to reach the highest point of the Alps - Mont Blanc, the height of which is 4810 meters above the sea level. The universal desire to conquer Mont Blanc reached the apogee in the early 1760’s, when Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, a Swiss geologist, botanist and mountaineer, unable to ascend to the summit, appointed a huge bonus to anyone who will do it first. But in 26 years to follow all the attempts to climb the mountain ended tragically for many brave men. And in the summer of 1786 doctor Michel-Gabriel Paccard and a mining explorer Jacques Balmat succeeded. Historically the ascent was scheduled for August 7. On August 8, at 18 hours and 23 minutes Packard and Balmat reached the mountain peak of Mont Blanc. Although the rise was rather difficult, the way to the top took just more than a day. An interesting fact is that Packard was the first to come to the peak, though Balmat moved with great enthusiasm. That was Packard who set a flag on the top of Mont Blanc and made entries in his diary about the temperature and air pressure, as well as some sketches of neighboring mountains. After returning, Packard started writing a book about ascending and Balmat went to Saussure for the reward as the conqueror of Mont Blanc. Saussure’s money did the trick, and the world called Jacques Balmat the pioneer. Since then all climbers celebrate their day on the 8th of August - the day when the highest peak of the Alps was conquered. And this day is considered the professional holiday not only by conquerors of mountain peaks, but also by people involved in industrial climbing. Every year there appear more and more highrisers all over the world, and these professionals can wash windows and facades, paint them, repair, remove snow and icicles, install air conditioning and perform other operations on these buildings, where the use of scaffolds is impossible. The alpinists use their holiday as an excuse to meet, exchange experiences and establish new records of impressive sights. In some cities of different countries this holiday is the day when sports clubs organize events, concerts and other celebrations.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is celebrated annually on August, 9 since 1994. The date was established by the UN General Assembly. On this day in 1992 the first meeting of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations took place. During the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples everybody pays tribute to the richness of indigenous cultures and the special contribution they make to the treasury of the world. Also this day recalls the enormous difficulties faced by most indigenous peoples - from poverty to unacceptable deprivation of property, discrimination and denial of basic human rights. In 1995 the first International Decade of Indigenous Peoples of the World started, which helped to hear the voice of indigenous peoples worldwide more clearly and to increase attention to the problems of these people. In 2004, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the Second International Decade of Indigenous peoples of the World for the period of 2005-2014 years, with the theme «Decade for Action and Dignity». The aim of all these measures is to focus on actions to protect the rights of indigenous peoples. Activists also seek to improve their position in regard to their lands, languages, resources for existence and their cultures. They work actively to strengthen international cooperation in dealing with the pressing issues that indigenous peoples face. These questions relate to such areas as education, health, human rights, environmental protection, economic development. Only public support can help to save all these perfect and original pearls for the world, and the holiday exists to remind everyone to do this.

12/08 - International Youth Day

15/08 - Archaeologist Day The Archaeologist Day has been long celebrated in Ukraine on August 15, despite the fact that the history of this holiday is not associated with any specific events and discoveries, and that the holiday itself was neither a state or a national one. By the way, the status of a public holiday was given to is only in 2008. Archeology is a completely isolated science, the science of antiquities, ancient peoples’ cultures and monuments of the past. Its importance can not be overstated, because all historical events are set either due to written sources, or according to archeology. Written reports are usually very rare, and household material is much more common than one can imagine. Ukrainian archeology began to develop in the mid-19th century, after it became the passion of Count Aleksey Uvarov. It was his research that formed the basis for further development of this science.

International Youth Day was established by the UN General Assembly on December 17, 1999 at the suggestion of the World Conference of ministers Responsible for Youth. International Youth Day was celebrated for the first time on August 12, 2000. It was decided to organize outreach activities in support of the holiday in order to raise the awareness of people about the World Programme of Action for Youth. Since then, the celebration has become very popular and has greatly extended through the world. Today there are nearly 3 billion citizens worldwide under the age of 25 years. Thanks to this holiday all these people found something in common.

13/08 - International Left-handers Day

16/08 - International Homeless Animals Day

International Left-handers Day was celebrated for the first time on August 13, 1992 at the initiative of the British Left Handers Club, founded in 1990. The modern world was created for people who do everything with their right hand. Written and kitchen utensils, doors and locks, computer mouse devices and a lot of other staff were made for the right-handed. The remaining have to adapt. Fortunately, left-handed pupils are no longer forced to write with their right hand, but even nowadays there are some parents or even teachers who are trying to retrain «the wrong kid.» On this day, left-handers around the world seek to draw attention of producers of goods to taking their needs into account. Activists organize various events, promotions and competitions. However, the main aim of the Left Handers Club is to change public opinion that better development of the left hand is a drawback. In many schools around the world, as earlier, people still try to retrain children to write with their right hand, which causes psychological stress and reduces students’ achievements. Year after year the members of the club of left-handed fight for their right to be both special and normal and celebration of this day is a kind of a manifesto.

International Homeless Animals Day is conducted on the third Saturday of August. The date appeared in the calendar about twenty years ago at the initiative of the International Society for Animal Rights. The idea of this organization was supported by activists from different countries. This day is not considered a holiday, but rather as a cause to recall the problem of homeless animals. Activists try to tell the maximum number of people about the tragic fate of dumb animals. On this day educational and charitable activities take place all over the world. Volunteers conduct concerts, contests and auctions raising money to help animals that don’t have sustainable shelter. Also this day is a great opportunity to find a true friend. The main purpose is to awaken the owners of pets’ conscious attitude to their role in order to prevent enlargement of the amount of homeless cats and dogs due to uncontrolled breeding of pets. This day more and more people join the good cause. We already see the fruits of this initiative, and, what is the most important, we become more humane, saving life or bettering every little creature’s lot.

19/08 - Beekeeper’s Day Beekeeper’s Day is annually celebrated in Ukraine on August 19, since 1997. That is when there was a rise of the popularity of this craft. Now beekeeping is in its prime and is a source of pride of the state. This day is celebrated with especial solemnity in such cities as Kyiv and Lviv where the professional holiday of beekeepers allows people to share experience, to demonstrate their achievements, to improve skills and promote the original local craft.

Honey August, 19 — Beekeeper’s Day and Savior of the Apple Feast Day On Beekeeper’s Day Orthodox Christians also celebrate The Transfiguration of Christ, which is popularly known as Savior of the Apple Feast Day. This is a traditional harvest festival. On this day apples and honey are consecrated in churches. Beekeepers prepare for this day especially thoroughly. They are to bless hives, give some honey to their neighbors, especially orphans, the sick and the disadvantaged ones.

Ukraine takes the first place in Europe and is among the five world leaders in the production of honey. It is estimated that each seventh ton of the world honey is made in Ukraine. Today on the country’s apiaries «work» about five million bee colonies. In 1997 the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 815/97, at the initiative of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and the Ukrainian National Beekeepers’ Union, set Beekeeper’s Day. Beekeepers’ professional holiday is celebrated in Ukraine annually on August, 19. The holiday-fair is usually celebrated for two days and in recent years has passed very well and lively. Especially - in Kyiv and Lviv regions where beekeeping exhibitions, performances of folk and art groups were organized. This day the first two prominent beekeepers of Ukraine are commemorated - Petro Prokopovich and Mykola Vitvytsky. Conferences, round

tables, a festival and beekeepers’ parade are conducted. At the latter honey of the beekeepers of Ukraine is presented. In addition, the presentation of newly published literature on beekeeping is held and, of course, tasting honey and other honey products. Nowadays, beekeepers around the world are being concerned with the decline of the population of bees. Due to the massive use of pesticides, the number of insect pollinators decreases dramatically, especially fast this happens in the United States. Biologists say that bees are disappearing drastically in Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and many other countries as well. The shortage of bees hasn’t affected Ukraine up to now. According to the National Scientific Centre “P.I. Prokopovich Institute of beekeeping” today about 400 thousand people in Ukraine are occupied with beekeeping. Our country produces more than 70 thousand tons of honey per year, and last year more than 17 thousand tons of honey were exported to Germany, USA, Austria, Poland, Russia and other countries. In addition, there are many farms in Western Ukraine involved into breeding of bees. “The demand for Ukrainian bees is due to the high level of resistance, that means they are resistant to diseases and climate changes. Also Ukrainian bees are non-aggressive and hard-working,” the director of the “P.I. Prokopovich Institute of beekeeping”, Oleksandr Halatyuk says.

Interesting fact to know Interestingly, a group of scientists at Harvard University, USA, is at the final stage of making a bee robot that will be able to pollinate flowers instead of its natural counterpart. The prototype RoboBees was presented by the developers last year, and now they refine the model to make the battery supply and other components fit in the artificial trunk in the most ergonomic way. National Science Foundation spent 10 million USD for the development of RoboBees. Miniature robots that weigh less than one gram, are able to fly against the wind, remember the flower, which has already been pollinated. The task for the tiny robot is to pollinate flowers and transfer pollen, but not to collect nectar. It is still not clear who will collect the honey, possibly, other artificial insects.

Present Day

Coffeebus Not all things are what they seem to be at first sight. For example, if you see a painted bus, next to which there may be a bar counter with high chairs, then, as you might guess, you will not go anywhere on such a vehicle. Instead you can drink some delicious Italian coffee.

adds to the atmosphere of the Coffeebus. As we were assured, it still works. Despite the fact that Sumy kofeybus is devoted to the past of the city, one can see that it does not stand apart from the events of today: there is a yellow-and-blue flag on the roof, and at the entrance guests are welcomed with the inscription: «Coffee to Ukraine! Coffee to Heroes!». Sumy citizens love their Coffeebus. Papers with thanks and wishes cover the whole window. We also left our sincere «thank you». One of the visitors of Coffeebus Kateryna also shared her impressions with us: «I like to spend time here. The atmosphere is wonderful, and people are hospitable. You come in - and forget about everything. You want to simply enjoy every moment.» LAZ-695 M is old, it is a real veteran of road traffic, so if necessary it moves the city not by himself, but with the help of a tow car. However, although Coffeebus has no engine, the «heart» of the car, it has enough hospitality and good attitude towards everybody. Though the impression of visiting Sumy Coffeebus was very pleasant, we should note that it may soon lose the status of the charming café on wheels. As the project author and owner of Coffeebuses Vadim Navrotsky told the correspondent of «Viva Ukraine»: «Sumy Coffeebus is not mine, and the person who bought it does not fulfill all the requirements connected with the high-quality coffee. We have a patent on the trademark and soon we will remove our name from this bus. The «Coffeebus» project deals only with real Italian coffee just from Rome, from the factory Caffe Braccio, and only from there!». As for Vadim, he is sure in the quality of his cofee. «Nunzio Brachio is my friend, his coffee was chosen for the project according to severe quality requirements. There were a lot of selection criteria, and most importantly, the owner was in love with his factory and his coffee! Nunzio Brachio passed it and we will work with him always! « So if you are a resident of Kyiv, you can visit such an unusual café on wheels with a unique atmosphere.

The «Coffeebus» project (rus. «Кофейбус») was created in 2009. It owes its existence to love of Vadim Navrotsky, the author of the project, to rare Lviv buses - LAZs. In previous years they were common to Ukrainian roads, many people remember their round “eyes” - driving lights and a friendly «smile» - a decorative strip on the front. Saved from the prospect to become scrap, they get their own unique design and comfortable place in the streets of the capital. The ideas for future look of each Coffeebus belong to their creator Vadim, his wife Nina and son Vitaly. And the implementation of these ideas into life is the responsibility of designers from Ternopil and Zolotonosha. Now there are five such unusual cafés in Kyiv, and they are so different. Each one has its own unique story. For example, Skoda 706 RTO 1967 became Coffeebus-3, this café is dedicated to the history of Czechoslovakia. Its saloon is full of things of Czechoslovak production, that remind us of the «distinctive and friendly country that no longer exists in the world, but which is preserved forever in history», Mr. Navrotsky says. Coffeebus-5 was born in 1979, in the times of hippies. Only the music of «The Beatles» plays there, anyone can smoke a hookah. Coffeebus-4 and Coffeebus-7 are waiting for their turn to restoration. According to Vadim’s plan, Coffeebus-4 is to become a café and a museum of the Golden Team «Dynamo Kyiv». Names of the players will be embroidered on the seats with gold, and on the driver’s seat there will be the name of the coach Lobanovskyi. Coffeebus-7 is new for the project. Unlike the others, it is a trolleybus. In gratitude to the divers who preserved it on the river bank, it is planned to make a museum of divers there. On December 30, 2013, another Coffeebus, already with number 9, appeared on the square in Sumy. The bus was completely renovated thanks to a friend of the Navrotsky family, Ihor. As the bus had been working at one of the local tracks for many years, it was decided to leave it in Sumy. The main theme in the interior of Sumy Coffeebus is the past of the city. From the outside it is decorated with photos of Sumy landscapes with brief notes under them. On each table there is an album «Sumy - my dear city», and inside there are many antiques: music plays from the bobbin tape «Jupiter», there is a mini-library in the back part of the saloon. Personality

Andriy Khlyvniuk — the leader of the anniversary group “Boombox” The band «Boombox» always gathers full houses, as this group is unique because it plays very unusual music that can not be attributed to any direction: rock, hip-hop, jazz or pop.

In 2004, Andriy Khlyvniuk with the guitarist of «Tartak» Andriy Samoylo organized «Boombox». That is how the cult band was born, and in April 2005 the first album «Melomania» was recorded. In 2006 a second disc “Family Business” was released, which received gold status in Ukraine. In 2008, «Boombox» released another album called «III». With the course of time, the company «Monolit» signed a contract with them on publication the album «Melomania» and “Family Business” in Russia. The duet of Khlyvniuk with Nadine was called «The most unexpected project of the year» according to the portal E-motion. Andriy managed to involve not only in music, for example, in August 2009, Khlyvniuk post-synchronized a French police officer Damien in the action movie “District 13: Ultimatum”. In 2010, in Kyiv, the presentation of the album «All Inclusive» was conducted. At the end of the next year the album «Middle Age» came out. In March 2013 Andriy won the award YUNA in the category «Best Lyrics» and “Boombox” was recognized as the best group of 2012.

The сreative career of the musicians started with various difficulties and obstacles, no radio stations wanted their music. And then their songs became hits. Five official albums, one informal, working with Pianoboy, Okean Elzy and Basta, writing music for movies and TV series, covering songs of Mihey, Mashina Vremeni, Igor Talkov and Braty Hadiukiny. Tours from Toronto to Vladivostok, from Kyiv to Abu Dhabi. 10 years, as one minute. And in fall the group will play in Kharkiv for its fans at the concert dedicated to the anniversary. The leader of the band Andriy Khlyvniuk was born on December 31, 1979 in Cherkassy. He studied graphical design at college and foreign languages in the university, but studying was boring for him. He wanted rock and roll, wanted to cut a record in a studio. He did not study, truanted double periods, attended only those lectures he was interested in - designing, fonts, composition, specialty subjects, as well as philosophy, sociology and even those double periods where he sat next to beautiful girls. While studying Andriy started playing in the band «Mandarinovyi Rai», which in 2011 won the festival «Perlyny sezony» and the musicians of the group moved to the capital. Later, there was established a group of «Graphite», in which Andriy was a vocalist.

Personality organize people and do something together. The joy that someone needs it. And, of course, shame that it wasn’t ideal. It is self-criticism that helps Andriy and his band to grow in the creative sense. When recording, the creative leader of the band is still happy, but as soon as the microphone is turned off, it already seems that this is not what he wanted, which means that it is time to take on a new work that just must be better, more perfect. The fifth studio album was recorded in 2013. The history of its creation is very unusual and interesting. Technically «Terminal B» was recorded in Kiev, but in fact it was created at the airport - or on the way to it or from it, or just in the terminal. The musicians toured a lot, and the only opportunity to work peacefully was in airplanes or terminals. There’s a lot of free time and little annoying factors. Every album should have its

“Boombox» team is one of the most successful Ukrainian bands that tours more than plays in Kyiv. “Boombox” has become a kind of a landmark of domestic rock music. Its frontman is a romantic and a stodger, at least, that’s how he described himself back at the start of the musical career. In his interviews he speaks only about music. And prefers to keep silence about his wife and two children, though he is certainly successful not only in the creative and professional ways. In 2010 he married the daughter of the First Deputy Minister of Finance of Ukraine Anna Kopylova. And on December 1, 2010 it became known that they gave birth to a son. In January 2013 their second child was born - daughter Sasha. For the musician such things are typical that are typical to any perfectionist, romantic, and stodger, which (as Andriy assures), he, as once, combines, despite the developments and achievements of the last ten years. Khlyvniuk has grown up significantly over the past decade, the musician often reflects on the passage of time. He likes to talk about life. «Earlier, when reading other people’s interviews, I either was full of sympathy to the character, or hated him. Now I realized that actually fleeting thoughts and answers do not reflect the nature of man. In a moment you can already be completely different.» In every life there are ups and downs. The highest point for Andriy is the moment of certainty. If he knows how much time and money he has, he feels that he will cope with the task easily and with great pleasure. He always seeks just such a balance. Every new album is the joy of the completed work, of the possibility to

own spirit. When you take it — you feel either playful or serious. The new album has a mood, the joy of the road, the sorrow for those who you miss, but still - interest to the people you meet for the first time. «Terminal B» is lyric, there are songs on various topics, but with the single mood - positive. There is a biography being written about the band. Its author is Timur Dorofeev, the editor of Forbes Ukraine, the former chief editor of Time Out, Maxim, FHM. The book is almost finished. Excerpts from it are available online, for example, in the blog of Alex. The first official excerpt was published in the booklet of the disk «Boombox - All Albums in MP3», issued by the company «Monolit». What else would the frontman of the favorite Ukrainian group do? Maybe travel? Often he feels interest, especially to little things, but then, after a peak, it shades away fast. And music will remain for always. He would like to engage in producing, to build a great studio, to make a real self-contained label that would really work. But bearing in mind the experience of other musicians, much more bright and known, meaningful to him, he is in no hurry to tackle all at once. 9

Culture

Sorochyntsi Fair 2014 With today’s events in Eastern Ukraine it was doubtful if the fair should be held or not, but still Sorochyntsi Fair 2014 did take place. Of course, the organizers are aware of the special nature of the events taking place at the Ukrainian East, so they changed the cultural program of the fair a lot, as it was to meet the requirements of the time. Sorochyntsi Fair was held under the slogan «Ukraine is united!». Also, during the fair, non-profit-making organizations collected funds to help the families of those killed or wounded during the ATO. According to the organizers, to hold the fair at a high level today means to show everyone including enemies, our stability, unity and invincibility. This confirms our high morale, seeking a peaceful, economically stable life, the desire to «make trade, not war.»

The fair movement in Ukraine has a long history. Already in the 40-ies of the XIX century there were 12 thousand fairs, including 178 large and medium-sized ones. Sorochyntsi Fair was neither the greatest of them, nor the most famous one. The village Velyki Sorochyntsi, Mirgorodsky district, might have stayed little known, just like many other villages of Poltava region, if it had not been glorified forever by a great compatriot — the Ukrainian and Russian writer Mykola Gogol. In the story «The Fair at Sorochyntsi», which is part of «Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka» Mykola Gogol describes how people come to the fair from every side. It happens in the early XIX century. Fairs continued to exist until the 20-ies of the 20-th century when they were closed completely. All trade in villages moved to the cooperation and control of the state. Since 1966, fairs have started to revive, and it is Sorochyntsi Fair that infused new blood into the ancient tradition. Many representatives of different organizations and companies - traders and manufacturers not only from Poltava, but also from many other regions of Ukraine and from abroad came there. Many people came to Sorochyntsi to buy diverse things, commodities that were hard to get in other places. They could not be stopped even by the fact that the Fair was held on an unequipped land, with no conditions for participants and guests. The period of perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the first years of independence, when Ukraine suffered from continuous commodity hunger and inflation could become

the beginning of the end for Sorochyntsi Fair. It was held almost by inertia, but did not call anybody’s enthusiasm: neither the organizers’ nor the participants’ and was a headache for them and for others. And the Fair, like a living creature, suffered and waited, when, at last, there will be people who will care about it and who will want to bring it back to life. And it came true... Since August 1999, according to the decree of the President of Ukraine, Sorochyntsi Fair has national status. At the Fair food and drinks, clothes and shoes, fur and textiles, electronics, housewares and many other staff is sold. The participation in the Fair for entrepreneurs is not only business, but also a very honorable role as Sorochyntsi Fair is an original landmark of Ukraine. This fair is not only a possibility to walk, see lots of various goods and choose something. Sorochyntsi Fair is also full of entertainment and opportunities to experience the national character, because everything is decorated according to the traditional Ukrainian style. And numerous workshops enable guests of the Fair to make traditional Ukrainian dishes, motanka dolls, candles, to make pottery on a potter’s wheel, and also to create various other souvenirs and jewelry, amulets and toys. For those who likes dancing workshops on Ukrainian hopak and the Fair disco took place. Sorochyntsi Fair 2014 was held from 18 to 24 August, and although this year there were fewer visitors, it was not an obstacle

The Fair revived, filled with visitors, and in the evening the famous Ukrainian band «DZIDZIO» sang for its fans. The central alley hosted boxes for donations from visitors and participants to the needs of the Ukrainian army. Anyone who did even the smallest contribution to this noble cause, got a little badge for it. The organizers say there was a boy of seven, who, after dropping a note in the box and getting the badge, asked his mother to put it to his chest at once. But the most impressive were his words: «Mom, I want everybody to see that I support the army too.»

Volyn regions showed their skill. In the evening all the participants could be present at an unforgettable ritual action «Fair Vechornytsi» along with the star guest - People’s Artist of Ukraine Pavlo Zibrov. In general, high patriotic spirit was a feature of the Fair. Not only because shirts, wreaths, banners, flags, various Ukrainian symbols were bought willingly and then worn with pride. On August, 21 the heroes of the “Heavenly Hundred” were commemorated at the main square of the Fair along with all those who gave their lives for Ukraine. The concert-requiem «We remember each hero» to the memory of those who suffered for Freedom and Independence of Ukraine included a performance of the symphony orchestra and the best soloists of Poltava regional Academic Ukrainian Gogol Theater of musical drama. The concert was conducted by the actors Bogdan Chernyavskiy and Anna Kharchenko. Most of those who were present at this event, could not hold back their tears, but were not ashamed of it. And every day at 22.00 all the stages of the Fair froze, to honor the memory of those who had died for Ukraine with a moment of silence.

According to the charitable organization «Poruch z toboyu» since the beginning of the Fair they have collected 43797 USD for the needs of the Ukrainian army. At the Fair one could buy high quality clothes - from very cheap, but beautiful coats and jackets, to more expensive, but more precious to a woman’s heart furs. There were lots of autumn and winter footwear for women, including that from Ukrainian producers. Apiarists were at their best too. Honey, mead, bee-glue and real works of art, wax candles-figurines. For those who like their home, there was a great choice of bedding, dishware and utensils. For good housewives who know the way to a man’s heart the Fair had a large variety of spices. Different foodservices also worked, but music there was quiet, and it played only up to the midnight. On all stages people sang Ukrainian songs, there was a Festival of folk art. And Khivrya’s estate hosted cinema showing of masterpieces of the Ukrainian cinema. Also according to the tradition, guests were welcomed by Gogol’s characters, and then groups from Poltava, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhia, Kirovograd and

On August, 22 one could see especially many children at the Fair. This is because on this day there was a concert program of children’s groups of Poltava region «Young Stars of Ukraine.» Young talents were given sweet prizes by TM «Belaya Biaroza» and TM «Veseli Karameli». For people whose birthday was that day the organizers, according to the tradition of recent years, prepared funny contests, entertainments, prizes, the most important of which – a dinner in the best restaurant in the fair. In the evening the main stage of the Fair hosted the beer festival «The best beer of the Fair» organized by the beer partner TM «Chernigivske» with the participation of the fire art-show «Burnout» and Kharkiv band «Nice Day». On the Day of the National Flag many Ukrainian flags, miniflags and blue and yellow ribbons were waving in the air. The Ukrainians’ patriotic sentiments, of both adults and kids, penetrates, and their works are admirable. The most striking one was the sand animation WORLD ART SHOW by Oksana Bernadska from Kharkiv. The stories from our history under patriotic slogans intertwined with the history of today. The final picture, in which a Ukrainian Cossack under the slogan «Glory to Ukraine!» turned into a soldier of ATO under the slogan «Glory to Heroes!» caused uncontrollable delight of everybody who saw it and when, after this, there was the Anthem of Ukraine, it unanimously got everybody to their feet, with hands pressed to the heart. To the heart that was overfilled with pride of realizing - that is Ukraine, they are Ukrainians! The only nation that has its own national idea, its own pride, and that no one can break down! 23rd Independence anniversary of Ukraine!

Ukraine has celebrated the 23rd anniversary of Independence 23 years ago, on August 24, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. This year Ukrainians celebrated this holiday in a special way because everyone felt the need for unity and support of each other. The holiday took place in all cities of Ukraine and abroad. And, of course, today’s tragic events left their mark: many concerts were canceled, and those still held started and ended with a minute of silence.

Kyiv: from Maidan to ATO In Kyiv celebrations were conducted on Khreshchatyk, Maidan Nezalezhnosti and St. Sophia Square. There were various concerts, people brought flowers to the monuments of national heroes. The feature of this year’s celebrations was honoring the memory of people who died defending democratic choice and constitutional principles of democracy, human rights and freedoms during the Revolution of Dignity (November 2013 - February 2014), protecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Specially for Independence Day of Ukraine a military parade

was held in Kyiv center at 9 AM. It was attended by 120 participants of ATO. «Unlike many previous, the current military parade was held in conditions when the country protects its eastern border under very difficult circumstances. So it was quite symbolic for a united crush of 120 ATO soldiers to participate in the parade on Khreshchatyk on August 24,» it was said in the statement of the Department for Cooperation with the media of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Also, the main street of the capital saw the latest examples of military equipment manufactured in Ukraine: BTR-3, BTR-4E, armored vehicles «Dozor», BM-21 Grad, BM30 Smerch, the 9K33 Osa, OTR-21 Tochka, the S-300. Cadets of military schools and educational establishments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the units of all types of forces that make up the Armed Forces of Ukraine also participated in the parade. All the military equipment of the National Guard that took part in the military parade in the center of Kyiv, Maidan, went straight from there to the zone of ATO. Traditionally, on Independence Day Kyiv hosted the Parade of Vyshyvankas. Up to 5000 people marched from Kontractova Square to St. Sophia Square. The Ukrainian Parade of Vyshyvankas is a unique event that has no analogues. In 2014 it was held for the sixth time. The festive procession, which is open to everybody is designed to combine different regions of Ukraine and to support national traditions. This year’s parade was attended by representatives of 18 regions and cities. The delegation from Sloviansk was welcomed especially warmly: people applauded, shouted «well done» and cried. Participants wore vyshyvankas characteristic of their region, sang folk songs, some carried icons. They showed not only vyshyvankas, but also Ukrainian rushnyks with embroidered ornaments typical for their region. Also “Presentation of the Ukrainian wedding” took place in the course of the parade. At Andriyivskyy Descent and the alleys of the park St. Volodymyr’s Hill there was held a sales exhibition of author art works, souvenirs, crafts and fine arts. Association of Art Galleries of Ukraine together with public associations, artists and amateurs of Andriyivskyy Descent conducted a diverse cultural program. In Mariyinsky Park, on the stage “The Shell” the festival Kyiv Open Air was held, which brought together about a dozen jazz, blues and soul singers, including: Lika Bugaeva, Dislocados, Atomic Simao, Cucu Chanel. Odessa: a naval parade in a maritime town

of the same action Odessa citizens streamed a 23-meter flag of Ukraine on the Potemkin Stairs. Hundreds of people came to the event, they stood on both sides of the stairs and at the top, next to the monument to Duke, and at the bottom - close to the sea. The flag was unfurled up from the bottom with joyous shouts and applause from the audience chanting: «Glory to Heroes!», «Glory to Ukraine!», «One single unified Ukraine!». Holding the flag, the participants of the action sang the Anthem of Ukraine. As explained by the organizers, every meter of the flag represents 1 year of Ukraine’s independence.

Lviv in the Ocean of Independence All the churches in Lviv region started the Independence Day with a joint prayer for Ukraine. Instead of a parade of military equipment, there was a parade of trams. Also Lviv hosted a marathon «For a sober nation,» devoted to the Independence Day. The participants of the race raised funds for the purchase of ammunition for the Ukrainian military men who are in the area of ATO. But still the most important event that happened in Ukraine on Independence Day was a concert of «Okean Elzy». 40 thousand people sang the national anthem of Ukraine together with the musicians. The group also honored the heroes of the «Heavenly Hundred» and the soldiers fallen in the area of ATO first with a moment of silence and then with «Heroes do not die!» by all the people present at the stadium.

The hero-city of Odessa hosted a naval parade. This action demonstrated the capabilities of warships and boats of the Naval Forces of Ukraine and Odessa Marine detachment of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine during combat training. Before the parade participants listened to the welcoming speech of the president of Ukraine – the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Petro Poroshenko. The event involved 22 ships, boats and ships of the Navy and Odessa detachment of maritime security, including the frigate «Hetman Sahaydachniy», the medium landing ship «Kirovograd», the missile boat «Pryluky», the harbor minesweeper «Henichesk», the gunboat «Skadovsk», the ambulance launch «Sokal», the the maritime security ships «Grygory Kurop’yatnykov», «Pavlo Derzhavin», the maritime security launch «Odessa» and others. In the heart of the city almost 1.3 thousand people in vyshyvankas created a «human chain» in honor of Independence Day of Ukraine. According to a UNIAN correspondent, people in vyshyvankas who gathered at the Prymorskiy Boulevard, took each other’s hands and made a «human chain» from the monument to the Duke to the sea-front next to the passenger terminal at Odessa sea port. The event took place in the pouring rain. Participants of the action that took place in the course of the Festival of Vyshyvankas, lined along the entire length of the Potemkin stairs and through the traffic line. Most people had yellow and blue elements of the Ukrainian flag either in their clothes or in their hands or balloons of similar colors. According to the organizers of the event, Odessa fixed the record of vyshyvankas «Vyshyvanka chain» - in 2012, 853 people participated in this event. As part

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko thanked the group for the concert in his social network: «We will win! Thank you, “Okean Elzy”. Thank you, Ukrainians,» he wrote. With Ukrainian symbols, flags, yellow and blue balloons and ribbons, in vyshyvankas and sharovary Ukrainians met their public holiday. They greeted each other with the 23-rd anniversary of Independence in Dnipropetrovsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr and other cities. Hundreds of people with flags of Ukraine gathered in the center of the released Sloviansk. For the city this holiday probably acquired some special significance.

Independence Day in the occupied Crimea

«Parade of prisoners» in Donetsk

In Simferopol, on this day the authorities increased the number of security forces. An increased patrol was located in Shevchenko Park and the central Lenin Square was blocked with metal fences. The authorities refused to comment on these enhanced security measures, but unofficially they admitted that the cause was Independence Day. «Maybe, one would like to celebrate the holiday, and the government wants to avoid provocations,» one of the securities shared, according to BBC Ukraine correspondent in Crimea. And still one could meet in the streets youth with Ukrainian symbols: yellow and blue clothes, with ribbons in hands, patriotic manicure etc. Many Crimeans greeted each other in social networks, but for this they had to pay. FSB then “talked” to the “offenders”. And a day before, on August 23, on the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine, Simferopol citizens laid flowers to the monument to Shevchenko and the monument to a Ukrainian human rights activist General Petro Grygorenko. Unfortunately, the event did not take place without any incidents. People who came to the Shevchenko monument, held Ukrainian flags in their hands. One of them, the head of the adult intensive care department of the perinatal center of Simferopol, Sergei Dub, was detained, handcuffed and pulled to the ground by fighters of the Crimean so-called «self-defense». Then, according to the post of Sergei Dub in in one of the social networks, he was taken to the police. He was charged with disorderly conduct - an article that provides for a fine of 1,000 rubles (about 400 UAH) or 15 days in jail. Also on the Flag Day, the chairman of Odessa Regional Council Oleksiy Goncharenko raised the Ukrainian flag on the top of Ai-Petri. The video of the raising process was published by him on his blog in the «Ukrainian Truth». Mr. Goncharenko says that he did this in order to Crimeans not to lose hope. He is sure that Crimea is a Ukrainian land. On the night from 23 to 24 August Crimean Tatars displayed 6 Ukrainian flags in Bakhchysarai. Three flags were installed at the entrance to Bakhchysarai on the road to Simferopol and three – on the chimney of the city boiler. The flags managed to stay there up to the midday. The representatives of special services walked around for a long time trying to find a way to remove Ukrainian flags. On Independence Day Ukrainian flags were waving in Sevastopol. Next to the pedestal on which before the annexation of the peninsula was a monument to Hetman Sagaydachny activists conducted a picket. Unfortunately, the action lasted only a few minutes. Passers-by called the police, because according to the local laws of the occupants, a man with Ukrainian flag is an offender. Two participants were arrested, they are accused of carrying out unauthorized actions.

On Independence Day Donetsk terrorists in opposition to the Ukrainian authorities carried out their own «parade» – a «parade» of prisoners already named the «parade of hatred.» This «event» attracted about 3,000 people. The citizens of DNR made a column of Ukrainian prisoners move through the center of Donetsk. Among the prisoners were women. With the passage of the column the supporters of «DNR» were throwing eggs, tomatoes and plastic water bottles at the captives. The crowd shouted curses, called the prisoners Nazis. In the video released on the internet one can hear people in the streets shouting to the prisoners «Fascists!». After that two irrigation machines passed by the place where they were going. The convoy took the column to the hotel «Donbass Palace», put people to buses and took them away.

According to a UNIAN correspondent, local residents who witnessed it reported on what had happened. «About 100 prisoners with their hands behind their backs moved in a column accompanied by terrorist guards with machine guns,» the interlocutors of UNIAN said. They also noted that a day before separatists brought to Lenin square had been several lost and damaged pieces of military equipment - tanks, BTRs, guns, and a «Grad». According to the militants, all the military equipment belonged to the Ukrainian army, and now it is a trophy of the terrorists. The «Parade of prisoners» was presented by the organizers as an analogy to the parades of German in Soviet cities during the Great Patriotic War. But this event has caused a mixed opinion even among the Donetsk team. «I have never been so ashamed of my countrymen,» one of Internet users wrote. Some even publicly repudiated their hometown. Still by some it is believed that this «parade» was a provocation. And it was the reaction sought and expected by those who had invented it. The organizers aimed at making Donetsk intact in the eyes of others and making Ukraine abandon it, as a plague city. Still the representatives of the «DNR» support the «Parade» calling it the revenge for Donbass cities under fire. The Ministry of Defence called the events in Donetsk a challenge to the whole world. «One cannot call the organizers of this disgusting event people and it is impossible to realize what they wanted to show,» it was said in the Ministry of the Defence. “The «Parade» of Ukrainian prisoners of war, which was conducted in Donetsk, is a violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War,” the deputy director of the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch Rachel Denber on her page in Twitter. She wrote: «The march of 16

Ukrainian soldiers violates the Geneva Convention, which prohibits humiliating and degrading treatment, as well as the offence to the dignity.» Germany also condemns this demonstration of pro-Russian fighters. This was stated by the spokesman of the German Foreign Ministry Martin Schäfer, according to Deutsche Welle. As he says, such actions of separatists are close to a war crime. «It is quite possible,” Mr. Schäfer said at the press conference, when asked whether it is possible to consider the actions of the “DNR” fighters a war crime. “It is absolutely disgusting, unacceptable and only adds fuel to the fire”. The former head of the Polish GROM service General Roman Polko also shared his opinion with TVN24. «This “parade” shows the world that in Donetsk we are not dealing with any government which wants to function normally or to join Russia, but only with the terrorists, which have the support of the Russian Federation. This “parade” proves it,» he said, expressing confidence that the event was organized at the direction of Moscow. Polko made emphasis on the fact that it is not right to humiliate prisoners in such a way. General said that with this approach we may be witnesses or proRussian terrorists killing people live. At the same time Moscow did not notice any mistreatment of prisoners of war in the «Parade» in Donetsk. As the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov said, he «did not see anything that would look like bullying.» As for degrading treatment, «let lawyers think of this.»

York. In Chicago, there was a traditional ceremony of solemnly raising the Ukrainian flag. In the historic center of Brussels in Belgium people also celebrate Independence Day of Ukraine. Since the very morning the symbol of the city - Manneken Pis - was dressed in the Ukrainian folk costume. It is the eighth time the boy puts on a white vyshyvanka with blue sharovary on August 24 - after it happened in 2007 for the first time, his suit has been stored in the museum named after him in a room with 900 other costumes. One of the first ones to come was Ukraine’s ambassador to Belgium and the representative of Ukraine to NATO Igor Dolgov accompanied by his friends, Ukrainians coming from Germany. «This is a historic day already - a new Ukrainian nation is born. Our guys die in ATO under the yellow and blue flag, and this color became a symbol of support for Ukraine here in Europe,» he said. Eventually the crowd began to bristle with vyshyvankas and yellow and blue colors - ribbons, flags, balloons. Ukrainians working in Belgium, and members of the expatriate community came there, they greeted each other with the holiday in Ukrainian. Before the fence of the fountain a table was set and covered with a tablecloth embroidered with a Ukrainian ornament. Mead was poured into wineglasses, rye bread and salo were sliced. Yellow and blue balloons were flying in the sky. Then people sang the anthem of Ukraine. «Glory to Ukraine! Glory to Heroes! « it sounded in the air. At midnight on August 24 in Lithuania, a singer and activist Ruslana together with Lithuanians lit a symbolic fire of solidarity with Ukraine. In the central square of Vilnius, thousands of people gathered to show their unity and support for Ukraine, said TSN.ua. At midnight sharp bells started ringing in Vilnius, and Ruslana traditionally sang the anthem of Ukraine. Singing, she was holding above her head a poster with the inscription «I am proud of my country. I live in a country of light. Ukraine». Then the singer and activist carried the torch of peace from the stage to the center of Cathedral Square and lit a symbolic fire that is to bring peace to our country and to unite the

Besides the yellow-blue flag the activists were holding fires, drawing the attention of drivers and passengers of cars that drove Moscow Avenue. In Moscow near the Kremlin activists tried to display a 10-meter Ukrainian flag, but the idea failed, the participants were immediately detained. All the five were taken to the police station «Zamoskvorechye.» Later, they were transferred to «Khamovniki».

Medicine instead of flowers to the Day of Knowledge That was the slogan under which one of Kyiv schools organized an action: the pupils brought to their teachers receipts instead of traditional bouquets. The money that would be spent on flowers is regurgitated to treat wounded soldiers of ATO. Both parents and students were inspired to charity by the ideological director of the Kyiv specialized school № 307. She was supported by everybody. Natalia Nelina said: «I have asked how much a bouquet of flowers costs. The cheapest one costs about 50-60 UAH. There are more than a thousand children studying in the school. It’s not about money, the fact is that today we are contributing to approaching of our victory.» The head of students’ self-government Yulia Hrechenyuk agrees with Natalia Nelina. «The flowers we buy and give to the teachers will last for a couple of days, then they will droop and, unneedful, will be put down the drain. For the same money we can save a human being.» This school will give money to three soldiers. One of them is staff sergeant Igor Sklyarov who was wounded under the terrorists’ fire from «Grad» no far from Amvrosiivka in June. He has been operated on for several times already. The pupils’ money for treatment will be given to 24-year-old Artyom as well. He has suffered a dozen operations due to a grenade that exploded in his APC under Lysychansk. Now the guy is in Vinnytsia hospital. The third soldier is Sergiy Zagasaylo. He came under fires not far from Sloviansk in May. He is still in critical condition. He remembers almost nothing. Sergiy was decorated with the Order «For Courage» of the third class. His operations cost at least 100 thousand euros. The guy’s mother is very grateful to the school’s charity. Due to the action «Medicine instead of flowers» School # 307 collected almost 100 thousand UAH. Some other schools returned the lead. The first direct presidential elections took place in Turkey The winner of the first-ever direct presidential elections in Turkey is the country’s current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. According to the Central Election Committee of Turkey, Erdoğan got the votes of about 52% of the votes against 38% given to his main rival — the former Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, diplomat Ekmeleddin Mehmet İhsanoğlu. The main candidate of the opposition congratulated Erdoğan on his victory. «I congratulate the Prime Minister and wish him luck,» İhsanoğlu said to reporters in Istanbul. Erdoğan won in the majority of provinces, including Istanbul and the capital Ankara. For İhsanoğlu voted residents of the European part of Turkey, as well as almost all the regions near the Mediterranean Sea. The third candidate — Selahattin Demirtaş — got less than 10%. He was supported by the provinces, which border with Syria and Iraq. The result of the first ballot eliminates the next round of elections. Erdoğan heads the Turkish government since March 2003, before he was Mayor of Istanbul. During the election race Erdoğan promised voters to turn Turkey into a global leader and achieve amendments to the constitution to give the President more power.

A department of professional rock has been opened in Barcelona

A badger-dog Mini Winnie is the first cloned dog A citizen of Britain Rebecca Smith had worried a lot that her beloved dog was 12 years, so she was very happy when it became possible to clone her pet.

Talented musicians, as if born with a guitar in hand, are often self-taught players, who impressed the world with their abilities. But from now on the University of Barcelona starts teaching rockers at the professional level. After all, not everyone can become true rockers: for that it is not enough to somehow play the guitar, have a bike, dope with drugs and like quarreling. There is something more important, and what exactly one can learn from the specialists of the University of Barcelona, where the department of professional rock will be opened this year. After the four-year studying, the students of the department will get a diploma of a real professional in rock music. The department of «rock, new trends and urban music» will be the first department in the country where rock musicians will be taught at the professional level. The program was developed by Barcelona High School of Music and was named «Jam Session». The University course was approved and adapted to the Bologna agreement. Students who choose this specialty will study for four years. The program lasts two hundred and forty college credits. The idea to introduce rock emerged after the leadership of the University realized that many musicians had to learn jazz just because they had no choice. At the same time, they were rockers to the bone. «Most of our teachers once had to study jazz because it was the only option, but in reality they are rockers at heart and since birth,» shares his thoughts Luis Blanco, the director of the newly established department and the founder of the program «Jam Session», and, of course, a great rocker himself. Now they are planning to make a group of thirty students who will pass the entrance exam, which will include both theoretical and practical parts. One can sign up for the entrance exams just now — the pre-registration is available on the official website of the institution www.jamsession.cat.

Cloning dogs cost about 90 thousand dollars. However, she did not spend a cent, as she had won the corresponding contest. Rebecca was the first dog owner in the UK who got the exact genetic copy of the pet. Baby Mini Winnie was born from skin cells of the 12-yearold Winnie. A complex operation was carried out in one of the laboratories of South Korea. When finally two identical dogs met and began to live in their owner’s house, Rebecca Smith was very impressed: «I can not believe it, but it’s a miracle. I’m shocked. Mini Winnie and Winnie are as like as two peas, they even have the same habits. They have already become friends. Winnie brings Mini up as if it was her own puppy. They eat together, walk, sleep,” 29-year-old Briton says. “They are so similar that the sleep the same number of hours and get up at the same time in the morning.» Also she explained why she cloned her pet. «I love my Winnie so much, and if she dies, I will suffer enormously, but now I have two of them, and it is easier,» the mistress of the dogs said. Previously, after years of attempts, geneticists managed to clone cells of adults for the first time. Researchers claim that this breakthrough will allow to implant healthy cells to patients. The latest, successful experiment involved adult men aged 35 and 75. Now scientists can create healthy cells and replace obsolete or ill ones with them. 22

Ice Bucket Challenge: an ice shower or 100 USD The World Wibe Web has simply exploded with the huge amount of videos with the hashtag Ice Bucket Challenge.

yet. Most of her breakthrough experiments on rats often ended in nothing, but the representatives of the organization hope that the new wave of attention to the problem and millions of dollars will help to make the necessary breakthrough. Among those who have joined the campaign are Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Bob Iger from Disney, actor Robert Downey Jr., many athletes, famous singers Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber and others. Bill Gates, who was “nominated” by Mark Zuckerberg, completed the task in the most creative way - he made a device from which ice water poured on his head after he pulled the rope. Several participants, including 86-year-old Ethel Kennedy — the widow of Senator Robert Kennedy, used their own example calling President Barack Obama to participate in the campaign. But the American President did not repeat their feat, though he donated 100 USD. Actor Vin Diesel decided to be original and called Russian President Vladimir Putin and First Lady Michelle Obama to participate. Actor Charlie Sheen was original as well: he poured himself not with ice water but with dollar billscommenting it like this: «Hey, wait... it’s not ice, it’s 10 thousand dollars in cash, which I give to The ALS Association. Because ice will melt, and the money can really help people.» Such a form of the action — to pour yourself with a bucket of ice water — has some meaning. The feeling of pouring oneself with ice water reminds feelings typical to ALS - cramps, myotonia, it is impossible to move. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a rare degenerative disease of the nervous system: about 2 people per a hundred thousand have liability to it. ALS occurs rapidly: within a few weeks the patient’s motor function refuse to work, the muscles weaken, and eventually the patient is «locked» in his own body. In this condition a person may live another 3 to 5 years: existing drugs only slightly slow down the destructive process. The famous scientist Stephen Hawking is one of the few ALS patients whose condition eventually stabilized.

Singers, actors, football players, other stars and rich people pour themselves with cold water in these videos. This flash mob was launched in the United States in early August and has gained quite a lot of scope. The campaign was designed to draw attention to the study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - an incurable disease. This is a severe form of paralysis, which affected, in particular, the famous physicist Stephen Hawking. The action has the form of a relay race: whoever accepts the challenge is to pour themselves with cold water and donate 10 USD, if people refuse to do so, they are to transfer 100 USD to the fund to fight against the disease. The “hydrotherapeutic procedure” should be captured on video and put to Internet in evidence. Also a participant has the right to “nominate” other three people who have 24 hours to decide on either pouring themselves with ice water, or donating 100 USD. However, the majority of participants do both. Most stars don’t try to get away from paying contributions. On the contrary, through their videos they add publicity to the action involving more charitable funds to study ALS. With broad support from celebrities the fund has collected more than 15 million USD per month. That is almost 10 times more than the amount the fund to fight against ALS managed to collect in 2013. The collected money will go to the address of The ALS Association, a respected charitable organization that the analyst company Charity Navigator awarded with its highest rating of trust. The research of The ALS Association has not brought great success
