Ha foglie composte , imparipennate, formate da 3-5, a volte 7-9, foglioline più o meno dentate che diventano gialle in autunno. Origine: Europa sud-orientale Caratteristiche botaniche: Grande albero dalla chioma ampia e arrotondata, vigoroso, può superare i 30m di altezza. Coltivato in Europa come pianta ornamentale. Foglie composte di 7, talvolta 5, foglioline sessili. Bellissima fioritura, a fine primavera inizio estate, di fiori bianchi macchiati prima di giallo e poi di rosa, riuniti in pannocchie erette che misurano anche 30 cm. I frutti arrotondati sono rivestiti da un involucro verde spinoso e liberano 1-3 grossi semi marroni, lucidi, chiamati “ Castagne d’India”. Pianta monoica, con fiori femminili e maschili separati ma sulla stessa pianta. Le infruttescenze sono costituite da 1-3 amenti legnosi ovoidali lunghi 2.5 cm che persistono sulla pianta tutto l’inverno. Corteccia grigia, liscia con lenticelle e brevi fessure verticali. Caratteristiche agronomico-ambientali: Pianta rustica, cresce bene in tutti i terreni anche in quelli calcarei. Tra gli ontani è il meno esigente di terreno umido, cresce infatti bene anche su terreni aridi e poveri. Alta resistenza all’inquinamento. Utilizzo: Rivestimento argini di fiumi.
