Every place has a history and a reason, and I have the opportunity to celebrate it through the design of its landscape and the built environment. 3

The new and old community

Connected. Site Planning

White Springs, FL

Fall 2011

The town of White Springs is rich in history and culture (a), but the railroad has fragmented the neighborhoods (b). Homes to the north of the railroad do not have paved roads (c) and the school that once brought its citizens together was abandoned and relocated (d).

4

A grant was given to the town of White Springs toward the construction of a new school in its most impoverished neighborhood. The plan was to reconstruct the neighborhood into a new community that would attract more residents into the area. This plan reassesses the idea of a new community, presenting an integrated neighborhood in which the school and connectivity brings all its citizens together without the need to eradicate the existing homes. The concept of “stitching back was used to show the new connection between the community and the town of White Springs, with moments that bring all of its people together.

The school setting, situated at the center of the site, becomes the core on this concept, being the element that integrates the existing neighborhood with the new development. Communal spaces are also highlighted, for they become social areas in which residents can interact though community gardens or social gatherings. Local farm space oers an opportunity to continue the history of white springs as an agricultural source.

(Above) The main road that leads to the school from the north is for bicycles and pedestrians only. Houses in this street also face toward the pedestrian road and provide parking through a rear alley to promote a sense of supervision and security. (Below) A proposal to have a commercial street with a wide median that serves as a park or open space for the farmer’s market. U-pick areas are also presented to invite its residents and visitors.

Public Space. Principles of Landscape Architecture

Gainesville, FL

Spring 2011

Located north of the university, the design of this park presents a dierent perspective on the notion of human order that has fragmented and contained the natural environment. In this concept, the native highlands of Florida are fragmented by circulation routes while the cypress swamp is contained by the paths over the water. The beauty of the Florida Landscape is brought to be enjoyed by the urban environment. Still, it is the user that has the opportunity to conclude whether this notion is best for both humans and nature.

Many Families,

One Garden. Planting Design

Gainesville, FL

Spring 2012

The Fisher House is a home to many families of military members that are receiving treatment in the medical center. This concept presented to the Gainesville Fisher House, oers a garden with a variety of spaces that provide the option to meditate, be active, have a gathering, or have privacy with the family.
