The old and new community

Connected

A grant was given to the town of White Springs toward the construction of a new school in its most impoverished neighborhood. The plan was to reconstruct the neighborhood into a new community that would attract more residents into the area. This plan reassesses the idea of a new community, presenting an integrated neighborhood in which the school and connectivity brings all its citizens together without the need to eradicate the existing homes. The concept of “stitching back was used to show the new connection between the community and the town of White Springs, with moments that bring all people together.

5

The school setting, situated at the center of the site, becomes the core on this concept, being the element that integrates the existing neighborhood with the new development. Vacant spaces are also highlighted, becoming social areas in which residents can interact though community gardens or social gatherings. Local farm space offers an opportunity to continue the history of white springs as an agricultural source.

(Above) The main road that leads to the school from the north is for bicycles and pedestrians only. Houses in this street also face toward the pedestrian road and provide parking through a rear alley to promote a sense of supervision and security.

(Right) The road by the school entrance has a primary lane for each direction, with medians that provide safe streets for pedestrians.

8

Main Street

The main street can have houses whose first floors can have different uses, from small markets, to restaurants, to child care facilities. This can help in creating a walkable community.

A proposal to have a commercial street with a wide median that serves as a park or open space for the farmer’s market. U-pick areas are also presented to invite its residents and visitors.

[Re] Thinking

[Re] Development

Establishing an economically vibrant downtown, through the use of the new grounded Sun Rail platform, is paramount for Longwood to grow into a destination. This project approaches redevelopment in a linear form by taking mixed land use in the city core and redistributing it to service more of the city’s current residents. The linear development is intended to establish a solid framework of services and spaces that will allow Longwood to develop naturally. *

*Project made with group members and statement written as a group

11

With this linear framework, the urban environment is experienced within a walking distance, while having the flexibility to live in a single family residence or any other type of development that benefits the person and the community. The basic needs could be found within 5 minute walks along the urban streets and special services could be accessed within a 10 minute walk.

Phase 1: East - West connections to the medical plaza

(Above) Experience as one arrives Longwood through the Sun Rail station. (Below) The medical plaza is redeveloped, becoming part of the urban framework. The existing park at the corner becomes an anchor as one walks to the west of Longwood.

Phase 2: North - South connections to primary roads

Phase 3: Further East-West connection to the extend into the city

14

The linear framework and flexible areas will be integrated by corridors where one can live, and choose where to park or play. Diverse forms in buildings will create spaces that will contribute to a dynamic pedestrian experience within the built space.

Many Families

One Garden

The Fisher House is a home to many families of military members that are receiving treatment in the medical center. This concept presented to the Gainesville Fisher House, offers a garden with a variety of spaces that provide the option to meditate, to exercise, have a gathering, or have privacy with the family.

Campus RainWorks

Challenge

Through the EPA RainWorks challenge, our goal became to awareness of water management by highlighting its path from source to sink and designing low impact alternatives to also improve the quality of our stormwater. Water began to get revealed by exposing a colorful water pipe that later releases its water to a series of ecological treatment chains. *

Planning and Urban Design

Brazil 2013

The study abroad program in Curitiba and Florianopolis helped to gain an understanding of sustainable planning practices taking place in Latin America. Curitiba’s mobility was studied and analyzed to provide a proposal on a mobility system that integrates walking, biking, and public transportation. Studies in Florianopolis were focused on urban design by first understanding its tissue, development, and conservation plans. A one day charrette followed the lectures, giving an opportunity to propose open spaces and their connections at different scales.

25

Mobility in CuritibaA Proposal for an Integrated Transportation System Curitiba has been an example of public transportation for its integrated bus system. However, the growing demand for mobility will need more than the bus system. This project explores an addition to the system with biking trails along the city that can be integrated to Curitiba’s BRT.

Current RIT Path Structure

The new model adapts to Curitiba’s development and current transportation system, demonstrating the current opportunities in walking and biking along with the current BRT.

Florianopolis is an island that is rapidly growing due to its water and landform features. However, the rapid development has led to informal and irregular planning that has affected the built environment and the relationship of its citizens to the natural surroundings. This one day charrette explores the opportunities of open space connections around the Lagoa da Conceição, connecting the tissue, and proposing connection to the lagoon through public space. Images below are quick sketches made in the charrette, illustrating the changes made in circulation and open space.

Suitability Analysis

The overall objective of this suitability analysis was to identify the lands that can be potentially used for aquaculture in the northwest region of Florida. This analysis can help plan the use or protection of lands according to their characteristics when compared to lands suitable for other needs. Most suitable

Least suitable

Objective: Identify areas most physically suitable for aquaculture activity Criteria: soil texture, drainage, slopes, and water quality

Objective: Identify areas proximally / economically suitable for aquaculture Criteria: Proximity to roads, rails, and tourism; distanced from agriculture

32

Goal: Identify areas most suitable for aquaculture activity

In Bogotรก, Colombia, a walkability analysis was used to understand some of the opportunities and constraints in creating public space around the Fucha River. Criteria for this suitability analysis included access to roads and pedestrian networks, point of destination, permeability, density and proximity to public transportation nodes.
