Tutor: Associate Professor. Kangkang Gu Teamwork: With Rongrong Gao, Yanhui Ma, Yaping Yu Role: Chief Designer & Group Leader Abstract: The walkability of a city is an important manifestation of the livability of its citizen life. Ameliorating the environment of the pedestrian system would have a profound effect on the improvement of the livability in urban ecology. Based on field research and pedestrians’ experience of sound environment in inner city of Hefei, this article mainly studies the pedestrian system of inner city of Hefei. The article clearly points out the problems of pedestrian system of inner city of Hefei. It comes up with the idea to cut down the noise on the road and add diverse sound environment in order to control the volume in the pedestrian system and shape the landscape of sound. This would furthermore promote the efficiency of the pedestrian system, ameliorate the pedestrian traffic system and finally promote the walkability of the inner city of Hefei. Keywords: walkability; efficiency; acoustic-environment; sound &light control

Background and theories

1. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory Human needs: Physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs Therefore, the demand for pedestrian environment is not only satisfied with the security, but also need a comfortable and rich visual and auditory walking environment. 2. 01 THE BASE OVERVIEW PART

THE OVERVIEW OF THE BASE Hefei is located in Anhui province, China. It is close to several water system, it acrosses Yangtze River and Huai River, it has been the important research and education base, the manufacturing base and the regional transport hub of China. Hefei is one of the most important cities in Yangtze River region and is also one of the delta cities of Yangtze River, which has a strong accessbility of transportation. The most part of the base is the historical district. The characteristic is the Huizhou achitecture in the base. The strategy tries to preserve and renew the texture of these Huizhou architecture. The texture reflects on the elements of the Huizhou Architecture, the space between the yard, and the street appearence. The survey is led from the human activities and based on the street space.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT STEPS First, city may extend through the realization of twodimensional network of urban space carrier with threedimensional space-level home diversity.

X

Second, the two-dimensional plane can extent without limit, the key method to cultivate the function of the city spots and the open space is to strengthen the close link between the inner resource and the information spot. Because of this, it is the best method to distribute the valued spots on the two-dimensional city network.

Z

X Y

Finally, we can get a more diversity of urban space through stacking different levels of two-dimensional networks in vertical.

The resources around the base are abundant and cross several business circles. The famous city park-- Huancheng Park is named as a jewlery necklace. It circles the whole inner city, which offers a good opportunity to open the green spot around.

THE OVERLAPPING OF CONCEPT The overlapping of different planes can help creat a abundant city space, which realize the accessbility between various elements of the urban design. Through regulating the height of the buildings in the area, the appearance of the place can be controled.

open space height of the building green park road system Based on the survey of the resources around the site, I classified the resources into four kinds: 1.openning space; 2.green spots; 3.road system; 4.height of the buildings

NETWORK CITY

03 THE SCHEME GENERATION PART

THE OPEN SPACE NETWORK Through the network of the road system and the open space, it formed a network system. This contributes to combine the historical relics and the business blocks well.

THE GREEN SPOT NETWORK The city green system is the key point to form a green network. Besides, adding the green network above the road system achieves the high quality of the environment of the slow city.

THE ROAD SYSTEM NETWORK The basic plane of the network city is the road system. Combining the water system and the road system can improve the transpotation environmental quality.

THE FLEXIBLE HEIGHT NETWORK The building texture of the old city has played a very imortant role on regulating the appearance of the inner city, which can form a Flexible Height Network.

Multifunctional

In order to attract tourists and provide multifunctional spaces .I renovate old buildings and add new functions.

Sacred space is another special space type of Huizhou. I use a local ancestral hall’s structure as the entrance of local sacred space to reinforce the linear space and display the structure of local architecture. In this way tourists can have a better understand of local culture and spaces.

Sunken Plaza is one of the space characteristic in Hui Zhou. I use this kind of traditional language to organize spaces which are lack of energy now. Both local residents and tourists can enjoy their outdoor activities here.

24

A TEAHOUSE DESIGN

Courtyard is another space type of HuiZhou, I use open space which is near the main street to design a tearoom for tourists to experience the traditional lifestyle of local residents in achitecture. It’s also public stage for people to communicate and play.

VACANT BUILDING people were forced to move out of the building by the fire.

Hijack Building As given the first glance at this term, you may think it is an usual event that some people occupy an “abandoned“ building. However, the hijack building in Jo.Burg city is not so simple. The buildings were originally clearly owned and managed by investors. They were mainly underused light industrial buildings and then were hijacked by people who did not own the property.

This is one form of Chinese calligraphy, which was finished by pen. Calligraphy is one of my most favorite hobbies since I was a little girl. I use this to practice my patience and form the aesthetic appreciation.

This piece of pen drawing was sketching from life. This is one scene in a Chinese classical garden and I sketched it in the Garden in Suzhou during my sketch internship.

The piece of work was finished in Jul. 2013 as a gift for my best friend, she is an artist. And it was also the result of learning how to depict people from her. The water color then becomes one of my most favorable technique to express my design work.

This piece of work called "Fallingwater Pennsylvania at dawn", when I was a freshman in college, it was the first time I try to use watercolor to describe architecture and the surroundings.
