VIV ASIA 2017 ENTERS NEW LEAGUE OF GLOBAL PLATFORMS WWW.VIV.NET

VIV Asia 2017 enters new league of global platforms The leaders in animal proteins from throughout the world have been in Bangkok from March 15 – 17, 2017. The total number of visits at VIV Asia 2017 recorded during the three days of the biennial event rose by nearly 20 percent compared with VIV Asia 2015, achieved a new record of 45,952 from 127 countries. This has included the visits by people from China rising from 1,917 in 2015 to 3,362 in 2017 --- a massive increase of more than 75 percent. “I firmly believe that the 2017 show has brought VIV Asia into a new league,” manager VIV worldwide Ruwan Berculo declares.“Where the number of exhibitors grows so fast you have a more complete offering for visitors to examine. I appreciate the extent to which companies at this edition invested more than ever in their exhibits.” With the growth in the total number of visitors has come a further increase in quality there too, as exhibitors have confirmed to the organizers. “The quality of the event is there already. Now that it is definitely in a new league of global platforms, our ambition is to make sure that VIV Asia develops even more as the window on the complete value chains of meat, eggs, milk and aquaculture.”

Upsurge from South Asia

On the certified final figures for VIV Asia 2017, attendance from outside Thailand grew to 27,758 from 21,723. The most represented countries apart from Thailand have been China, Vietnam, Philippines, India and Malaysia, each of them sending at least 2,000 people and all of them showing a significant increase in their representation compared with two years ago.

The rise of China

“The fact and figures sheet on VIV Asia 2015 listed China in fifth place on the number of visits per country,” reports show manager Zhenja Antochin. “In 2017 it has moved up to second place. It has fully justified our new Welcome China programme to assist Chinese visitors in their own language as well as our promotion to China’s leading companies in animal production and aquaculture. More than that in my view, this growth in participation reflects the increasing influence of China both regionally and internationally when it comes to investments in animal proteins. We know that China will be investing the most of any country in the coming 25 years and VIV Asia has to respond to that.

“We have found that the fastest growing attendances were from China, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh,” says Zhenja Antochin. “Among many reasons seems to be that the animal protein industries of South Asia now consider VIV Asia to be their own international show, an event which is for and about them as much as being for wider communities. “It is a trend that we welcome warmly, not least bearing in mind the dynamic nature of the business in the countries of South Asia. Bangkok is close to them geographically so it is a highly convenient location for professionals from the Indian subcontinent. In a real sense it means that VIV Asia is their local show!”

“The figures also demonstrate the continued strength of the regional market. Asia and the Pacific zone represent the largest single source of the world’s poultry meat, eggs, pork and aquaculture products. It is also where milk production is growing the fastest. Without a doubt the animal protein businesses in the region are still receiving considerable investments towards their modernisation and further expansion.”

Asian Personality Awards recognize industry giants During the Opening Ceremony, the Asian Personality Awards were presented by Mr. Nigel Horrox, Managing Director at Positive Action Publications, and Mr. Ruwan Berculo, Manager of VIV worldwide. This was the seventh time VIV and Positive Action Publications have hosted these personality awards at VIV Asia. Over 20 winners have now been recognized in a distinguished chain of industry personalities that stretches back to 2005. The International Pig Topics – VIV Asian Pig Personality for 2017 award went to Professor Roonngroje Thanawongnuwech of Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. The citation noted that since the early 1990s he has been a key disseminator of current technical knowledge on pig diseases both in Thailand and further afield. He has been a repeated winner of The National Research Council of Thailand’s Award for Quality Research – mainly in the fields of PRRS and influenza. The Professor is also revered across the South East Asian region as a mentor and he is always available as a fountain of knowledge on all aspects of pig diseases to his fellow veterinarians. Unfortunately the Professor was unable to attend the presentation because of a Royal visit to his faculty at the university on the same day, but his colleague Professor Padet accepted the award on his behalf. Mr. Sung Hwang Bae, President of Sam Hwa GPS Breeding Agri Inc. in Korea, was named winner of the International Hatchery Practice – VIV Asian Poultry Breeder Personality 2017 award. Mr. Bae was recognized for his involvement in poultry breeding for many years. To many people, said the citation, he is the face of the Korean poultry industry. He is a major supplier of broiler breeder parent stock into his home market and has had a long and close relationship with the international breeder Aviagen. Over the years he has graced shows such as VIV Asia with his presence and always has time to ‘talk chicken’ with his contacts – old and new – in the industry.

The next award to be presented was for the International Dairy Topics – VIV Asian Dairy Personality for 2017. This year’s winner is Dr. Vinod Ahuja. He started his career as a teacher at the India Institute of Management, obtained a PhD from the University of Maryland in the USA and worked for the World Bank in Washington DC. Then, in 2009, he joined the FAO in Bangkok, where he works on ‘tackling climate change through livestock’. His professional interests include sustainable livestock development, commercialization of public services in agriculture and value chain development for livestock products. He has also supported livestock sector projects and policy formulation processes in a range of Asian countries where his inputs have been really appreciated. The final award, for International Poultry Production – VIV Asian Poultry Personality 2017, went to Dr. Sumeth Sapchukun from Thailand. According to the citation, his dynamism has helped in putting his employer, Huvepharma, in the position it now enjoys in South East Asia. He has been a significant driver of WPSA in Thailand and more recently he has been a driving force behind the Thai Poultry Veterinary Association, where he was instrumental in bringing two WVPA Asian Meetings to Bangkok a few years ago. In 2015 he was an integral part of a great Thai team that bid for and secured the 2019 Global WVPA Congress for Thailand and Bangkok.

PETSConnect Asia highlights trends and developments in pet foods Under a new agreement between VIV worldwide and pet industry publication PETS International, an additional feature at VIV Asia on the day before the show’s opening was the first PETSConnect Asia 2017 special conference. “We have been pleased by the response to this first edition,” said Corine van Winden, CEO of PETS International and the architect of the programme for the fullday meeting. “It has provided both a bridge between animal feed and pet food manufacturing and an outstanding networking opportunity for those people wanting to develop their business in the region’s pet sector.” Almost 100 representatives of Asian manufacturers and suppliers attended the event. They heard confirmation that the regional market continues to show strong growth, with pet food sales in Asia-Pacific countries in 2016 contributing about US$ 6.5 billion to a global total of over US$ 75 billion according to calculations by Euromonitor. Delegates were also reminded that, in today’s world, it is vital to follow the human food trends. It means consumers are becoming more demanding, they are informing themselves more and more via the internet and --- not least across Asia --- they would like their own food tastes to be translated into similar forms for pet food and snack products.

“This is the first time Sonac and DAR PRO Ingredients participate at the PETSConnect conference. We are proud to introduce our high quality, nutritional and sustainable ingredients (of animal origin) to the Asian pet food industry.” Geert van der Velden - Doyle Nauman - Sales Manager Sonac - Protein Sales, Domestic & Export DAR PRO Ingredients

Furthermore, speakers underlined a vital difference between producing animal feed and pet food. In the case of pet foods, they explained, there is the extra imperative of protecting the health and well-being of the pet’s owner. For example, British formulation consultant David Southey told the meeting that although dogs and cats can tolerate bacterial levels in their food quite well, humans are more susceptible to any contaminating bacteria and therefore pet foods need to be sanitised correctly at the time of their manufacture to avoid passing on an infection.

VIV Asia2017

Equally, the extremely low incidence of food allergies in dogs and cats contrasts with an increasing trend to allergic reactions among the human population, signalling that the ingredients chosen for pet foods must be selected with care and declared responsibly on product labels.

These notes of caution are especially relevant in today’s marketplace where some pet food manufacturers seek an edge over their competitors by including an exotic raw material such as the meat of a wild animal. Inclusions of this type may raise consumer expectations about matching the pet’s diet more closely to that of the owner in a process known as humanization, but they could also raise concerns about the sustainability of the ingredient supply and the potential health risks to both pets and owners. “Trust and claims represent the new trend in pet foods,” said Corine van Wilden. “This conference has done an excellent job of alerting the Asian audience to the implications for pet food manufacturing within the region of South-East Asia.”

Aquatic Conference: a rewardingAQUATIC experience for all On March 14, the day before VIV Asia 2017 opened its doors, International Aquafeed magazine, Progressus and VIV worldwide organized the Aquatic Conference 2017. Speakers included a wide range of representatives from both academic and commercial, DAIRY TECH who used their varied and diverse backgrounds to address sessions on biosecurity, feed security and water quality. The biosecurity session spurred discussion of algae, antibiotics and everything in between by academics and representatives from leading biosecurity organizations from around the world. The impressive and thorough nature of biosecurity on Thai shrimp farms was given special attention by local speakers, with every possible measure of biosecurity being considered, from disinfecting vehicle tyres, right down to the eating utensils farm workers are using. Emphasis was also placed on the need for continued research and development to tackle disease.

SATELLITE PET HEALTH & NUTRITION

The feed quality session successfully transformed the gritty details of rearing shrimp into a fascinating and engaging presentation. Presentations perfectly balanced the serious topic of maintaining healthy shrimp through good feed with occasional anecdotes involving the day-to-day lives of fish farmers. Feed fortification and nutrition were also addressed by industry leaders, providing informative and valuable discussion on protection from harmful bacteria. The final session brought useful discussion on water quality, with a primary focus on climate change and water recirculation. Speakers from both academic and commercial backgrounds outlined the dire importance that water quality holds over the healthy growth of fish. As was common throughout the day, shrimp were given particular attention, though a very interesting presentation was also given on the rearing of Nile Tilapia. In all, the Aquatic Conference proved to be a rewarding experience for all, with almost 200 attendees and 13 speakers.

Exhibitors @ VIV Asia 2017 FOOD & AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS @ DAIRY TECH Among DairyTech exhibitors at VIV Asia 2017 was the Asia-Pacific regional office of the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, to demonstrate its support for the creation of a Dairy Asia initiative that seeks to link scientists and national dairy organizations across Asian countries in an industry-wide process of sustainable development. Melina Lamkowsky, Junior Consultant at FAO’s regional office, explained that the initiative in its first year had already secured the co-operation of associations and governmental authorities from 13 nations in Asia and the Pacific region. One of the first moves has been to form a genetics committee containing technical representatives from member organizations and also the publication of a paper on dairy genetics strategy in Asia. The committee will advise any country that requests its help, free of charge. Nearby In the DairyTech area of the exhibition, the stand of Canadian animal housing company Promat highlighted its membership of the Global Dairy Institute, a collaboration between nine dairy industry suppliers from the United States and Canada.

SWINE VACCINES BY REBER GENETICS On the stand of Reber Genetics from Taiwan, International Marketing Supervisor Sarah Yeh with her colleague, International Business Department Sales Manager Pinky C. H. Li, described two targets for the company’s participation at VIV Asia 2017. “This is our second time at VIV Asia,” said Sarah, “and of course we want to reach out to even more countries in our aim to export our pig vaccines worldwide. But on this occasion we want also to make sure we are totally familiar with the market here in Thailand as we prepare to enter it. We have a subunit vaccine called PRRSFree against the swine disease PRRS that includes a very specific antigen delivery system. It is now Number One for market share in Taiwan after being launched there four years ago. Our next development is a combination PRRS/PCV vaccine for pigs, we have already introduced it in Russia this year.”

CAGEMAX CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN SUPPLYING PROTEINS FOR ANIMAL FEED Dimitri Dalessi, Sales Manager of Cagemax in The Netherlands, was celebrating the company’s 20 years in supplying proteins globally for animal feeds and pet foods. “We are strong in moving big volumes and we believe in being transparent, with tracking and tracing from door to door,” he commented. “VIV Asia gives us a great opportunity to remind everyone from the region that we are around and have years of experience in supplying customers in Asian countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Philippines. Especially pet food is a growing market in Asia and we are presenting some special products to suit the demand in that sector.”

Being electrical, it avoids the carbon monoxide problems that can occur when heating with gas or oil. This heater also suits warm Asian climates because it will not need to be switched on during summer days and therefore its effective life is extended.”

“Asia and Africa are doing well for us,” reported M. Sami Aydin, owner of Aytav Poultry Equipments, Turkey, with sales/ marketing manager Hidir Uzun. “As a company that sells to over 60 countries we understand very well the importance of this international show. It is the fourth time we have exhibited here. A new product for us this time is the Aytav polypropylene drawer for bird transport. We offer it in three sizes and it is already used by customers in many countries. They appreciate its good quality, meaning it is strong and durable.”

ACO FUNKI

OLMIX: NEW MYCOTOXIN BINDER

On the stand of Danish pig equipment company Aco Funki, key account manager Claes Petersen said “We are busy in Asia and VIV Asia is where we need to be in order to cover the whole region, including the Pacific area. In fact, the number of countries represented by visitors has been remarkable. The Asian market for pig production equipment is very encouraging at present, with investments indicating that the confidence of the region’s pork producers is high.”

Pictured on the stand of Olmix, France, is Matthieu Le Moigne, area manager Middle East/Pakistan & India at the company’s newly established office in Dubai. “We regard VIV Asia as important also for South Asia,” he commented. “For all of our Asian customers involved in feeding farm animals we are introducing the mycotoxin binder MTX+. It is based on specific algae and clays to increase the binding capacity in a patented extension that also covers action against the Fusarium toxins or fumonisins.”

MERIAL'S POULTRY PRODUCTS PART OF BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM

“Asia is the growing market and one where we continue to increase our presence,” said Goh Bak Yan, Managing Director-Greater Asia for AGCO GSI (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. “AGCO has made some important acquisitions since the last VIV Asia and we are at the 2017 show to introduce them to our customers here. One major step in poultry equipment is that we have entered the layer cage business by acquiring Farmer Automatic and Tecno to add to our existing Cumberland range; with the strong position this new combination gives us in places such as China and Malaysia, we are confident that it will be a success.”

At times, some of the exhibitor presentations during VIV Asia had all the flair and fanfare of a theatrical production. One example we caught came when Julien Gros, Head of Avian Strategic Business Unit-Asia Region for Merial Asia Pte Ltd, was reminding show visitors that Merial with its poultry products business is now part of Boehringer Ingelheim.

Exhibitors @ VIV Asia 2017 CELTIC NUTRITION: MILK REPLACERS FOR CALVES “For us, VIV Asia has brought valuable new contacts; it is truly a show for trade.” The speakers are Marc Drillet and Delphine Rouzaut of Celtic Nutrition, France. The company is known mostly across Asia for milk-based piglet feeds, they remark, but for the last six years it has also sold milk replacer for calves and this has given a new sales opportunity in Asia. “We are a milk factory, about 85% of our total business is for calves when you consider domestic and international together,” says Marc. “The growing importance of dairy cow milk production in Asian countries and that is good for us as it means more milk replacers being used in rearing calves.”

AMERICAN SWINE AND CATTLE GENETICS As a long-time exporter of American swine and cattle genetics, Clayton Agri-Marketing president Tony Clayton from the United States acknowledged that he was at VIV Asia “primarily to see the people we are doing business with in various Asian countries”. He added, “I do business in 52 countries including most of the places in Asia. The market for us is definitely good. We see a change in the meat production of the region from commodity to quality and that obviously has a big effect on genetic requirements. The other major driver on the Asian market is health because of ongoing diseases such as PRRS in pigs and foot-and-mouth disease. Restocking gives a real opportunity for genetic improvement.”

CLEANCHICK DUAL TECHNOLOGY BY INNOVATEC Hatchery systems company Innovatec introduced CLEANchick dual technology, a system which does candling based on heartbeat at rates of 90,000 eggs per hour. “It has the ability to distinguish contaminated eggs from infertile ones and can remove them separately from the hatching eggs,” we were told by sales manager Christophe Bohez. “Innovatec is at VIV Asia to strengthen our brand and generate new business leads as well as launching new products. My overall impressions of the show is that it has been well attended by an international public covering the whole of Asia --- and the visitors are key decision makers from the industry.”

NEW FEED PRODUCTS FOR AQUACULTURE Aquaculture is the target market for Nucleoforce Shrimps Plus and Palbio 62 SP, new feed products presented at the show by Bioberica. Oriol Roigé Ciurana, Product and Area Sales Manager in the animal nutrition division of the Spanish company, referred to Nucleoforce as a concentrate of free nucleotides helping with disease resistance and stress tolerance in shrimp. Palbio is marketed for both fish and shrimp feeds. It is a protein with exceptional bioactive characteristics, obtained by processing porcine intestinal mucosa as a by-product of heparin production. “Bioiberica is developing its role in Asian aquaculture performance and health,” he commented, “to build on our strong position in Asia for pigs and poultry.”

Exhibitors @ VIV Asia 2017 ROTECNA PIG EQUIPMENT Speaking at VIV Asia to Oscar Toledano, export director of Spanish pig equipment group Rotecna, he makes clear the growth potential of the Asian market. “We think 50-70% of the equipment sold in the next 10 years will be to customers in Asia,” Oscar says. “Even though we know we can’t achieve the same high level of market share we enjoy in Europe or the U.S., our business here will still be enough, given the size of the total market.” Mainly known until now for plastic products, Rotecna at the show unveiled extended activities in pig feeding and manure treatment systems. Its Dositronic and Dositronic Plus are individual feed rationing devices for sows in farrowing pens. Managed in a similar way to a simple doser in order to be user-friendly, the controller arranges a series of portions each 24 hours to encourage feed intake and provides individual consumption data as well as an at-a-glance monitoring of the sow’s condition by coloured LED lights.

CHANGING TREND IN ASIA'S POULTRY HOUSING Cenk Elitok, Managing Director South-East Asia at Munters Co. Ltd. Thailand, welcomed a changing trend in Asia’s poultry housing marketplace. “There is a definite move from natural ventilation to tunnel ventilation in poultry houses here,” he told us. “Producers have developed their understanding of tunnel ventilation’s benefits so that they now recognise its value – the fact that it puts money in their pocket. Asia is really a home region for us even though we are in origin a Swedish company. We have had a Bangkok office for 16 years and we undertake production, assembly and warehousing of our fan systems for projects in South-East Asia. We know Asia and we know VIV Asia is the show for all Asia.”

"VIV ASIA BRINGS EVERYONE TOGETHER" “VIV Asia brings everyone together,” declared Kensuke Nishikoji, Manager of the Overseas Department of Nabel Co. Ltd., Japan, when we interviewed him on the Nabel stand with Lee Hock Hwa, Managing Director of Nabel Asia Sdn. Bhd. based in Malaysia. “It has been the obvious place to present our latest developments such as the DET 6000 digital egg tester, which now includes the option of measuring the Yolk Index. Based on yolk diameter and height, the Yolk Index gives a good indication of freshness when compared for example with the conventional Haugh Unit test. In fact the DET 6000 can measure both the Yolk Index and the Haugh unit score, as well as egg weight and eggshell strength.”

ACCELERATE ABSORPTION OF NUTRIENTS Bernardo Park presented Lipidol on behalf of Korean company Easy Bio Inc., where he is Regional Director Asia/Africa in the Solutions Creation Business Unit. Marketed through a joint venture called Pathway Intermediates International and based on highly concentrated functional phospholipids, Lipidol is a feed component to accelerate the absorption and transport of nutrients so feed utilization is enhanced. Easy Bio’s display also highlighted performance improvements in weaned pigs and laying hens from Lipidol inclusion, alongside EndoPower enzyme application for corn-soybean feeds and an AcceLa feed additive for better metabolism.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT BIOENERGY PRODUCTION

AB AGRI LAUNCHES ISN

Bioenergy production will develop further on livestock and poultry units in Asia, according to Thomas Wagner, chief South-East Asia representative for EnviTec Biogas AG of Germany. The company already has offices in Jakarta and Manila in connection with biogas plants for palm-oil plantations, but it exhibited at VIV Asia to extend its Asean-area presence in the supply of systems also to the producers of poultry and pigs. “I would say that three-quarters of the people who have visited us here are Asian poultry producers, particularly from the Philippines,” said Mr. Wagner. “The financial situation in some countries in Asia can give a payback period from biogas of as little as four years. We explain that the minimum viable size for biogas depends on the circumstances and the environment. Customers also need to understand that every plant installed involves an individual design and a certain level of engineering. You are not talking about off-the-shelf packages.”

The presence of several major international animal feed companies as exhibitors was one feature of VIV Asia 2017. British feed group AB Agri used the show to launch ISN as its international specialty nutrition arm covering premixes, young-animal diets and an associated nutritional consultancy. Alistair Cross, AB Agri’s Managing Director Specialty Nutrition, and ISN poultry nutritionist Patrick Garland outlined how ISN’s creation brings together the group’s various feed product strands such as for the Asian market, with customised solutions for pigs, poultry, aquaculture and ruminants. ISN at the show was introducing ProtoCell as a new protein for aquaculture feeds. Corn-based and containing yeast from bioethanol production, it has been designed to incorporate the benefits of plant protein and the functional properties of yeast.

CLEAN DRINKING WATER FOR FARM LIVESTOCK

HATCHTECH DEMONSTRATES HATCHBROOD

Clean drinking water for farm livestock was a theme of several VIV Asia product introductions. They included the Select 380 water treatment system from Dosing Solutions, UK. Company managing director David Welch demonstrated its peristaltic pump action to deliver cleaning product accurately into the water line in proportion to the flow rate. Screen displays offer a choice of dosing ratios along with details of water flow rate and consumption. “We have exhibited specifically to extend our Asian coverage by finding distribution for Vietnam and Indonesia,” Mr Welch commented. “The visitors to the show have included interesting distributors of poultry and pig equipment in our target countries.”

In the words of Erik Helmink, Marketing Director of HatchTech from The Netherlands, “Asia is a people business market --- personal relationships are everything.” It explains the need for the company to present itself at VIV Asia, he adds, and to showcase its latest products and projects. “VIV Asia 2017 has been an impressive trade show for us, very well attended, and it has shown clearly that interest in the poultry business as a whole is increasing very fast. The show has let us demonstrate practical aspects of our systems such as HatchBrood brooding control.”

Exhibitors @ VIV Asia 2017 NATURAL BEAK SMOOTHING: GROUNDBREAKING INNOVATION, FIRST TIME EVER ON AN EXHIBITION

Roxell participated at VIV Asia 2017 by exhibiting the new concept of Natural Beak Smoothing in the context of poultry feeders. Presented for the first time in Asia, Natural Beak Smoothing is essentially a feeding system refinement that controls the beak growth of broiler breeders continuously while they are fed. According to the Roxell exhibit, this new solution avoids stress on the birds while guaranteeing bird performance, feed saving and compliance with animal welfare regulations.
