CONCEPTACLE

Point/Line/Plane As the basic elements of composition, p o in t , li n e a n d p la n e f or m t h e architecture. In this exercise, I explore t h e re l a t io n s h i p a n d t r a n s i t i o n between these three components. The lines fans out form the points and points exist when lines meet. The intersection between planes and the other elements become points and lines.

Mass

The presence of mass can be sensed by the contrast of void and solidity, accumulation of materials and volumetric density.

Drawiing of Mass In th e drawin g, t he feel ing of m ass i s achieved by the void volumes in solid context and stacking of layers. The drawing technique is also a representation of mass which forms overlayed layers by brushing the colours again and again. The main concept of the drawing is to explore the boundless underground word in different dimensions. The vaults are connected to each other and extend both horizontally and vertically.

Frame and Infill

Frame is the permanent and xed existence and in ll is always dynamic and transient.

Final Model The frame of this model is the rigid rectangles and the stairways and fabrics work as the in lls. The basic grid of the frames comes from the painting of Mondrian and fabrics work as the translucent blocks elements. Fabric are also applied as the hanging elements which strengthen the feeling of dynamic and fluid space. The stairways run through the whole model to create a fluid circulation inside the frame. They also allow people to walk and experience the uidity.

Fludity within Rigidity The main concept is fluidity within rigidity and the conceptacle model is strongly related to the previous three exercises. The distribution of the frame is based on the PLP and the ramps come from the MASS drawing. Hanging fabric was also applied in the model for its strong feature of fluidity. The rectangle ramps were change into curving form as they are against the main concept. The hang fabrics and curving ramps was restrained by the frame, as the fluidity within the rigidity.

Something like a Pavilion & Secret

Pavilion is a transient and small-scale object offering people a temporary shelter. A special pavilion is needed for the site Herring Island and the site itself is also suitable for building a pavilion hiding a secret. As mentioned in the lecture, the secret is information happens before and the power of it is depending on the design. The process of discovery is also the secret. Images on the right show the basic acknowledge of pavilion and secret.

Sketch Design The sketch design was based on the conceptacle and explored the possibility of integration to the site. Transformation from concept to architecture was also realized in this stage.

Stroyboard This design is journey along uidity. It started on some white frames covered by trees. Then, walking on the up and down surface of the ramps, the sense of uidity was spotted. Wind blew, the fabrics uttered in the air, the flow and movement of air were revealed. After that came the pavilion, the uidity still owed in this semi-open space. There was a small entrance and something was hiding there. Behind the door was dark and depressing curving tunnels running to someplace. Finally, from open to close, from light to dark, the secret was revealed‌

Reflection I really enjoyed this studio and I believe I was engaged with it. I think this studio was successful of its teaching structure and it helped me develop my acknowledge of architecture and ability to design. From the first three exercises to the final design, the whole process was very logical and each exercise was strongly connected to each other. I also found the emphasizing on integration to site was interesting and it adequately answered the theme of this studio, earth. One of my favourite part was the blog images and it was an ef cient way for students to understand the topic. During this process, I started to find precedents from all disciplines and daily life. In the final design, many of my ideas came from my previous exercises and precedents. I was also satis ed with my nal presentation drawings and I believed the hand drawings were most successful part. For me, scribbled sketch and physical models were strong and effective ways to develop my design ideas and improve the projects. The problem of my works in this semester was lack of further development and there were more possibilities of my design. What’s more, I think I should enrich my knowledge reverse of architecture to support and develop my concept. Overall, I had a good time and this studio was meaningful to me.
