Nostalgic Heritage is a methodology for heritage preservation based on Svetlana Boym’s theory, which described nostalgia as ‘revisiting time as space’ and ‘superimposition of past and now’(Boym,2001). This nostalgic approach aims to arouse sympathy and déjà vu of the site by layering the memories and elements. The proposal focuses on Job Warehouse on Bourke Street in Melbourne and intends to revitalise the lost stories and meanings. It aims to recognise the value of neglected old building and reconnect people to the site by superimposing and displacing the nostalgic objects and events from past, present and future. Eventually, these architectural palimpsests will be the resources and generators of materials, forms and spaces.

The lonely death cleaners are a group of people devoted to cleaning the deceased’s homes, and they collect the belongings. The dead usually left alone without anyone came for the inheritance. The cleaners will deal with the aftermath, and due to the harsh working condition and superstition, this job is considered unacceptable. Especially for the lonely death case, the deceased’s belongings will be collocated and sorted by cleaners. During this process, the cleaners read through the owners’ memories and absorb the sorrow. The architecture will serve as an archive of the past artifacts. It is a domain for the cleaners, as they value the belongings. At here, they will sort the artifacts and mediate through the process. They will pray for the deceased and give a farewell to them.

The cleaners have to deal with the with the aftermath: dark stains where the corpse lay, remnants of hair, skin, or bones, maggots and ies, as well as the stench. Due to the harsh working condition and superstition, this job is considered as unacceptable, even dirty. The people left alone usually didn’t have anyone came for the inheritance. Hence, the cleaners also in charge of collect and sort the belongings. During this process, the cleaners read through the owners’ memories and absorb the sorrow. Still Life
Museum of Everyday Object in Nicosia Civic + Cultural Complex Project in 2019
The proposed design is for a museum of Still Life sitting in Nicosia’s buffer zone and follows the stillness concept, which derives from the abandoned sites in or near the buffer zone, where time and life were frozen. The content and architecture celebrate the captured moments and ongoing daily life of the Nicosia people. Through reappearing the still life of the past and now, this museum is a bridge connecting the young and old generations in Nicosia. Being in a neutral position also encourages exchanging information between two sides through personal and collective memories. Not to solve the political issues or realise unification, but to achieve more understanding.

Boom House
Duality of Individuality Residential Project in 2020
This house is designed for a Boomer couple with their children’s families and Airbnb clients. The concept derived from the conflict between sharing space and private space in the multi-generational living mode, which has become popular in Australia. “There is always someone there” is the most significant advantage but also disadvantages of this living style. The very first concern of this design is to ensure boomers have more social opportunities but at the same time to maximally provide privacy for each resident. Hence, every family owns an individual unit, including the living room, kitchen, and laundry. The sharing and public space work as the buffer zones between each family space. The boomers’ unit is highlighted with the ground floor’s angled wall, which is next to the communal living room. The second generations’ units sit on the upper floor with a level difference. The front house for Airbnb is separated from the boomers’ family by a long corridor and the swimming pool. Individual courtyards are also provided for single rooms to celebrate privacy. Every space in this house is about the duality of multi-generational life.

Educational Project in 2018
The site locates at the intersection of Royal Parade and Story Street, adjacent to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The studio brief is to design a new general learning complex building with a new Sports Department. The fundamental concept stemmed from the colour of the school logo: green, white, tan. The architecture proposed an environmental-friendly school respecting students’ individuality and the site context by following this idea. As the principal language, the stepping terrace form is used for offering an intimate relationship between students and greenery, with the exterior stairs encouraging outdoor activities. Besides, the external staircases are used to celebrate verticality and break up the linear and horizontal circulation. A

Sky scrapper on La Trobe Street Construction Group Project with Tianhao Zhang& Yiran Tao in 2019
The key driver of this high-rise design is ‘setting back’. We aim to celebrate the verticality and slenderness of skyscraper by using stepping forms. The tower is visibly divided into 5 groups, which are the low rise, medium-rise, high rise, sky rise and the crown. At each transfer floor, we place roof garden to respond to the surrounding greenery, especially the Carlton Garden. We applied a 45-degree rotation to the tower to allow Carlton garden’s fantastic view from both northeast and southeast facades. By doing so, dynamism is happening inside the rigid boxy form. The wind pressure is also reduced through rotation, as there is no facade perpendicular to the wind direction (north).

Creativity
Chakra Sacral Parametric Group Project with Grant Li in 2018
This subject focuses on computational design and cutting-edge fabrication methods. The studio brief is to translate the Chakra into architectural language through parametric design in cooperation with 3d printing techniques. Our group was assigned the Chakra of Sacral as the key concept, which represents creativity and dynamism. The site locates at the Dights Fall, and we propose to build a creative public hub in the open green area. Besides the Sacral concept, we also chose and studied the bone growth behaviour as the biomimetic precedence for parametric programming.

The Persian Garden A Sip of Tea
Landscape Project in 2020
The brief of this project is to translate the traditional Persian garden into a contemporary garden sitting in Melbourne. Following the key concept of ‘ A Sip of Tea’, this garden was intended to offer an atmosphere of opening and sharing, adapted from the Persian tea culture. The overarching scheme follows Persian traditions such as the axial design with the water channel, sloping feature and quad garden. However, this reinterpretation of the Persian garden also breaks the rules such as the openness as a public garden, and the rotation of the axis to better suit the local environment and contemporary context.
