MERCEDES CLS Based on a unique synthesis of coupé and saloon, the concept car displays elegant yet instantly dramatic lines and all the classic Mercedes comfort, innovation and safety hallmarks – the perfect blend of passion and practicality. And the same is true of the powerful diesel engine, its 265 bhp providing the drive for a truly dynamic driving experience. The power plant propels the Vision CLS from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds and enables it to reach a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Furthermore, this impressive performance does not cost the earth: the six-cylinder engine consumes 7.5 litres of fuel per 100 km and is fully compliant with the strict EU-4 emission standard. The Vision CLS is the latest in a long line of highprofile Mercedes showcars. In recent years the Stuttgart-based manufacturer has unveiled a whole host of new and exciting vehicle concepts, most of which have gone on to enter series production. Our product planning team again was on hand to gauge public opinion at the International Motor Show. The results of their survey will dictate what the future holds for this unique vehicle concept. With four doors and a generous amount of space, the Vision CLS offers a great deal more added value than other coupés in terms of both comfort and practicality. There is a gap of 829 mm between the front and rear seats, which puts the Vision CLS firmly in saloon territory.

THE NEW CHRYSLER 300C TOURING CONCEPT The new Chrysler 300C Touring concept is the wagon version of the Chrysler 300C sedan concept, which was revealed earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show. The Chrysler 300C sedan concept made its European show debut alongside the new Touring version at the IAA. The Touring concept expands the Chrysler 300C model range and shares most of the design, powertrain, chassis, equipment, interior appointments and technical specifications of the sedan concept. Adding all-wheel drive, a high level of versatility and roomy comfort for driver and passengers – matched with the ride and handling of a European sports sedan – the new Touring will enable the Chrysler brand to compete in the European E segment where around 40 per cent of sales are wagon derivatives. A production version of the Chrysler 300C Touring concept will be available exclusively outside of North America late next year, further solidifying the Chrysler brand’s premium position in the market. With an entirely new shape based on the company’s all-new rear-drive architecture, the striking concept sedan – and now the wagon – continue the Chrysler brand’s proud 'letter series' tradition, but in a thoroughly modern way. These two Chrysler 300C concepts also mark the return of the HEMI® engine to the Chrysler brand after more than 30 years. HUMMER H3T

No matter the size or configuration, a vehicle adorned with the HUMMER name must deliver the best-in-class capabilities that have made the brand the standard against which other off-road vehicles are measured. That's certainly the case with the dynamic H3T, a midsize truck that infuses all of HUMMER's military-derived DNA into an efficient, refined package and carves a new niche in the midsize truck market. HUMMER introduced the ruggedly refined H3T concept vehicle at the 2004 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, providing a glimpse at a growing family of expressive, versatile vehicles. Innovative features abound in the H3T: The pickup box incorporates side-access doors, along with drop-down assist steps that also double as weather-tight storage compartments. The H3T's unique tailgate forms an unbroken load surface when down, contributing to the H3T's versatility. There's also a large, power-operated folding canvas sunroof and drop-down rear window that combine to offer an open-air driving experience. There wouldn't be a HUMMER badge on the H3T if it didn't have the capability to dive into twisty terrain that would leave lesser 4x4s spinning their wheels. Its wheels-at-the-corners stance, along with 34-inch-tall tires and 11.5 inches of ground clearance, gives the H3T a 51degree approach angle and a 50-degree departure angle - critical measures on HUMMER's internal off-road performance metric of capabilities.

LEXUS LF-C

Lexus introduced its third new concept design within a year when it unveiled the LF-C luxury sports coupe concept car at the 2004 New York International Auto Show. The LF series of concept vehicles is designed to define and launch an entirely new direction in styling for the Lexus brand. The LF-C provides a hint of the direction Lexus is considering for the next generation IS 300 sports car. The surprise is provided by stylists from the Calty Design Research Center in the form of a 4-position retractable hardtop in the LF-C. The unique hardtop design allows the car to transform itself at the touch of a button from a coupe to a convertible, to a targa or to a speedster, depending on the driver's mood. The powered top stows neatly into the trunk through a surprisingly minimal rear-deck opening. A large rear wheel drive platform utilizes a high-output, front-mounted V8 engine with a six-speed sequential automatic transmission as the basis and motivating force for the LF-C. With an expanded wheelbase of 5.1 inches, the LF-C is only slightly longer overall than the current IS 300. Significantly, the LF-C sits about 2.0 inches lower and is nearly five inches wider than the current IS 300. The broad stance and short overhangs strike an aggressive pose with ample dimensions to comfortably accommodate four adult passengers. rpm magazine •

Calty used long, integrated lines to simplify the overall form of the LF-C. The distinctive roof rail tapers as it moves forward from the rear, mimicking the sculpted theme of the main body. The extreme tapering of the main body shape from front to rear, which is then wrapped and interlocked by the rear fenders, is designed to show strength and power from every angle. The interior communicates performance with drive-by-wire steering and Formula One inspired shifter and steering wheel with the gauges stacked along the steering column axis, ascending toward the base of the windshield. The gauges are transparent, with needles moving from the ring, rather than the center. A dynamic and flowing center console, in a solid tapered form, runs the length of the interior. Displays and controls are hidden beneath this transparent console surface that is multi-layered, which creates a sophisticated, high-tech look and feel. The console is flanked on each side by arched, wing-like instrument panels situated low in front of the driver and passenger to create a feeling of openness. Four lightweight individual bucket seats use slender shapes inspired by modern stemware to create a contrast of sport and elegance. The effect provides roominess along with a snug and secure feeling.

Red. Blood red. Rossa. It is the color of fire and intensity. It is the color of passion and desire. It is the color of Ferrari. No other car manufacturer can build vehicles with such intensity and style that they touch the pleasure centers of your brain with just a fleeting glance. Spot a Ferrari knifing through traffic as an youngster, from the back of your moms station wagon, and you will spend the rest of your adolescence (and part of your adulthood) dreaming about owning and driving that car. A Lamborghini with greater performance or a Saleen with more outrageous styling cannot stop traffic or hearts like a Ferrari. They will reach deep into your soul and create a feeling of longing that will consume you, reducing any middle aged man of discriminating taste into a high school teenager with a drivers permit. You don’t so much as own a Ferrari, like any other mechanical contraption of steel and rubber and paint, rather you develop a respectful admirable relationship with it. It is no surprise most owners refer to their Ferraris in feminine terms. Ferraris, like women, need and deserve much attention and respect. While you may purchase an original piece of artwork or the rights to a great piece of music, you do not "own" the passion of the art. And trust me, this car is a piece of art. Like any example of

great art, it is expensive. Left only to professional sports, recording contracts, and lotto tickets, the means of feeding your need can be somewhat elusive. Especially this is the case of our cover vehicle. The head stallion in Ferrari’s stable of prancing horses is the Enzo Ferrari. This car is the namesake of the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. He was known as a tough and resilient man with a passion for racing, who left Alfa Romeo to start his own car company as means to finance a racing team. Even today, Ferrari dominates the world racing stage and this car is a testament to a man with a passion for racing and a company with a celebrated history of winning. The Enzo Ferrari, (now we’re talking about the car) is the fourth in a line of gifts from the factory. Gifts in the sense that Ferrari (the company), did not produce these cars necessarily for profit. Rather they built these cars as celebrations of success to be shared with their customers. The first "gift" was the 288 GTO from the early eighties. A twin turbo V8 with amazing acceleration and impressive handling (for the time), for way too much money. Second came the Ferrari F-40, again a turbo V-8, 480 horsepower, that accelerated like a bat outta hell, had enough grip to change your direction of blood and cost more money than most homes. With a roof high rear wing and intake nostrils in the hood, this Ferrari brought the look and the feel of a racecar to the street. Third, came the Ferrari F-50 (1995-1997). Gone were the turbos of the earlier cars, but now we were given a 60 valve V-12 with DOHC and a carbon-fiber body. Definitely designed as a racecar for the street, Ferrari only built 349 examples for customers that had to be approved by the company for consideration of purchase. These cars were the epitome of Ferrari in excess. The motor was designed using the latest in technology and materials, to fit in a chassis and bodywork sculpted like artwork yet functional. If there ever was an example of form following function, a marriage of passion and purpose, this was it. Seductive curves flowed into round organic shapes and ended in a roof high rear spoiler. A special clear engine cover revealed the true artwork in this Ferrari, the engine. 12 cylinders, 60 valves and 520-horsepower proved this was more than just a looker. While not much faster than a F-40, the F-50 was a much-loved successor to the 288 GTO legacy. rpm magazine •

The new testament to self-greatness from Ferrari is the best yet. Built in limited quantities, 399 total, all are already sold. The only way to acquire this rolling piece of history is through a "flipper". A flipper is someone on the list of buyers willing to immediately resale the car for a huge profit. Capitalism at its best and worst. The new Enzo brings 660 horsepower, 48 valve V-12 to the tire smoking party. I don’t know why Ferrari didn’t use the five valve head on this car, but from the spec sheet it was not missed. Power application looks to be smooth and consistent all the way through the rev-band, while retaining a civility not seen in a super car of this caliber. The engineers did decide to forgo a manual transmission like the other cars and reprogrammed their F-1 shifter for this application. Would the lack of a true manual tranny take away from this car? It doesn’t seem so. Up shifts at full throttle change faster than humanly possible and down shift throttle blips are more closely matched than my size eleven could make anyway. Unlike the 360 and 575M applications, this program does not allow for a fully automatic mode. No real loss here. If you wanted to relax in an auto-shifted luxury coup, buy an Aston-Martin, otherwise you never miss the fact you can’t row your own.

Without ever watching the Enzo streak down a straight away or see the backend hanging out in a long right-hander, you can tell this car means business by the size of its custom tires. 245-35-19 front and 345/35/19 rear, special construction Bridgestone RE050A Scuderia tires fight with the laws of physics to keep this Ferrari planted to the tarmac. It takes a lot of quality rubber to tame that much horsepower, and these Bridgestone’s do a commendable job of prolonging the inevitable liquefaction of way too expensive tires. It’s only money right? Light ‘em up! What is great art with out controversy? Would Picasso have been as celebrated if his paintings were conventional. What about Robert Frost? The depth of beauty in his work must be pursued, sought out, to be fully recognized. Great art must challenge you. Challenge your conventions of acceptability, challenge your ideals of beauty and challenge your sense of style.

Not everyone will warm up to the sculpture that is the Enzo Ferrari. And not everyone needs to. Considerably less flamboyant than other super cars, the Enzo projects athleticism without looking extreme or contrived. People knowledgeable of Ferrari’s history, and familiar with their lineage of incredible cars, can fully appreciate the Enzo’s styling. Ferrari deleted the huge rear spoilers found on other extreme performance cars, in favor of clean crisp lines leading to angular front and rear threequarter views. The underbody panels channel air under the vehicle creating enough down force to suck pebbles out of the asphalt. Give credit to both the designers in the studio and the engineers in the wind tunnel. I have seen posters and pictures of this car in black and yellow but the hue that does this Ferrari the best service is red. For all of the reasons I mention earlier and some that can simply not be put into words, all Ferrari’s are red.

Rolls Royce 100EX The 100EX is the first Experimental Car to be produced by RollsRoyce Motor Cars since BMW Group became the custodians of the marque in 1998 and launched the all-new Phantom at the company’s new home in Goodwood in January 2003. Based on a lightweight aluminium space-frame, this open-top, four-seat, two-door drophead has been designed and produced to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Rolls-Royce, which falls in May 2004. There is no plan to produce it as a series model. Experimental models have long been a feature of Rolls-Royce, particularly between 1919 and 1957 when a number of motor cars were given the ‘EX’ name. Unlike a concept car, an experimental car functions more fully and was originally used by RollsRoyce to test and evaluate new systems, components and features. While the design of the 100EX and the choice of its special construction materials resonate strongly with Rolls-Royce tradition, both its aesthetic qualities and its technological content place it squarely in the 21st century. A strong nautical theme runs throughout, with bleached teak decking featuring both inside and outside the car. Polished aluminium also features heavily, particularly on the bonnet and windscreen surround, while the composite body is finished in Dark Curzon. The design team that shaped the new Experimental Car was based in Southern California, at BMW Group’s studio, Designworks – an entirely natural setting for a luxurious convertible. Here research was conducted into the Rolls-Royce design language specific to open-top motoring. A number of designs were proposed with the ultimate choices progressing to the clay stage. After final selection, the build process began, this time at BMW’s specialist design and build facilities in Munich.

To emphasize the bodylines, a polished aluminium waist rail surrounds the passenger compartment. Hand crafted, bleached teak decking has been chosen to feature both inside and outside the car, forming part of a strong maritime theme that runs throughout. On the exterior it forms a tonneau cover for the folded hood and features as an inlay in the polished aluminium door cappings. At the front, a solid silver Spirit of Ecstasy sits on a progressively rakish version of the traditional Rolls-Royce grille, blending into the dramatic bonnet which has been milled from a single aluminium block and brushed to a high sheen. The tailored soft top is made from an advanced material that incorporates woven wire strands offering strength and all weather protection. The inside of the hood is lined with a wool/cashmere blend fabric. Painstaking design of the folding mechanism means the hood can be concealed in an extremely small storage area, keeping intrusion into the luggage space to a minimum. The rear of the motor car tapers in a boat-tail style and the ‘countryman’ boot lid is split to give a drop-down lower tailgate. Teak decking extends across the boot floor, providing a table-like surface. The chosen interior wood veneer is figured mahogany. Upholstery and trim are in rich Dark Curzon leather, while the flooring features the same bleached teak decking as the tonneau cover for the folded hood. Specially-designed front seats are included, which are ultra-supportive but slender, allowing good legroom for rear passengers. The rear seat itself, while more intimate than that in the Phantom, is extremely accommodating for two people, with generous space devoted to passenger comfort, helped by the neat and space-efficient folding roof mechanism.

Girls will be girls but Karen can seriously clown and compete with some of the best car collections we’ve seen. Her collection of vehicles range from Fords to Benz’s but the one common denominator they all have is that they all share a thirst for high-octane gasoline and plenty of horsepower. As a matter of fact, her car collection may be one of the most appealing that we’ve seen a while and when you consider that this is her very own personal fleet it makes her even more dreamy that she already is. There’s really nothing better than a woman who can step out shopping with a Benz and just as quickly jump into a GT40 Coupe and literally blow the doors off of anyone in her way. Her collection of vehicles is diverse and a mirrored representation of the power she commands and the multifaceted talents that she possesses. But in a hobby which is generally dominated by men, it is nice to know that women like Karen are not only in the game to play, but to win as well. Upon receiving the tech sheet of her vehicles, we were impressed to see just how detailed her husband was in explaining just what modifications were performed to each vehicle. The modifications included everything form inside/ out and the most beautiful thing about it all was that all vehicles were not only aesthetically pleasing but also well endowed in the department of performance in both acceleration and braking – something not to commonly seen as the segmented market of fou-fou and bling-bling often times promote only the flash and the dazzle.


With lists so long we decided to just offer you up the fixin’s on each vehicle as well as the specific details of all the upgrades. As always, each of the vehicles we feature are not only worked on by some of the finest automotive boutiques – like CEC Showroom – but also a glimpse into the world we offer you and the way we like to see our automobiles done. STRUTyourstuff By Riley Sawyer FACE OFF Need something more for your front fascia? The most important part of a vehicle is the front fascia. It’s the first part of the vehicle that’s seen when you first pull up and it’s the defining piece which lets the audience know if you’ve got a hot ticket or a matinee show. But what do you do when your front end is hot but is a bit bland or lacking? Well, just like women trim their noses and enhance their breasts, you can now add or swap parts just as easily – especially when it comes to select vehicles which happen to fit the eloquent Strut grille. Take for instance the Chrysler 300C. Its front end is bold, but not daring and with the addition of one of their fine grilles on my own vehicle, it has literally upped my compliments and looks to astronomical proportions. The grille adds a certain confidence that is highlighted by its second-to-none quality. Already, some have mistaken my ride for a Bentley while others just don’t know what to say and stuck in amazement by the sparkle of its intertwined mesh. As a matter of fact, I’m probably answering more questions about the grille than I am the actual car – sorry Chrysler. All of their grilles are crafted of 316L stainless steel (the highest grade available) and finished in a 4-step process which provides the maximum shine and durability. Mitsubishi Eclipse Concept-E Image credits: Mitsubishi Motors Like a soothsayer peering into a crystal ball, Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA), provided a glimpse into the future through the Eclipse Concept-E. But perhaps the future is more clearly visible through the glowing plasma bulb located in the car's center console. Because when the Eclipse Concept-E's parallel hybrid motor is switched on, that plasma indicator light glows with its own unique energy, letting the driver know that there's more here than meets the eye. Upon initial glance, what meets the eye is a highly styled coupe. Featuring plasma running lights and taillights; neon crackle-tube indicators and brake lights; and a glass roof that offers ambient luminescence of its own, the Concept-E could be called a study in light. But an innovative all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration-in which parallel engines provide power to both the front and rear axles-also makes the Eclipse Concept-E a study in high-tech mechanics. Thanks to this unique hybrid system, called E-Boost, the Concept-E delivers a continuous, uninterrupted stream of power even while the six-speed automated manual transmission changes gears. sports coupe and convertible series has won wide acclaim for its styling and its segment-leading performance. The Concept-E carries that performance-bred spirit to electrifying new heights. The Eclipse Concept-E's front wheels are powered by a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that features Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and lift Electronic Control (MIVEC). Driving the rear wheels is a rear-mounted E-Boost electric motor which provides an additional 200 horsepower, for a total output of 470 horsepower. Because it is not affected by gear changes, the throttle-actuated electric rear motor gives the Eclipse Concept-E a constant source of power when it's needed, which directly translates to higher, more efficient performance. Besides raw speed, the hybrid powertrain also improves fuel economy and lowers emissions when compared to vehicles with engines that develop in excess of 450 horsepower. And when value is added to the equation, the Concept-E is at least equal to its mass times the speed of light, squared. While the two-plus-two seating configuration is carried into this preview of the fourth-generation Eclipse, that's where most similarities end. Inside, the Wave Line design theme includes an instrument panel that combines shadow and light, hard lines and soft curves, to create an elegant, relaxing an thoroughly modern environment.

Flyin high

There are 470,000 words in Webster’s dictionary. More than half of which are nouns and adjectives. As such, this collection represents less than half of the estimated one million words in the English language. Out of all the possible combinations of words and examples of description, the only adequate title for this blue Hummer H2 is "scandalous". Popular lexicon changes hourly, but some words carry a deeper meaning that can last ages. We’ve seen "fresh" come and go. "Sick" still remains but has lost some meaning and "phat" should only be used in reference to shoes. For the few times a greater tool of communication is required we are given some freedom. In the case of this H2, the truck that pursues automotive nirvana without consideration of any obstacle, I use scandalous. Since General Motors’ acquisition of the Hummer brand a few years ago, the automotive market has been anxiously awaiting more affordable alternatives to the all-conquering war hero H1, made popular by the Governator. When the H2 was introduced, we were not disappointed. This truck became the toast of every auto show and topical conversation at most tailgate parties. People that didn’t know cars still knew the H2. Plus, at a starting price barely north of $50,000, it became the everyman’s Hummer.

Coincidently, the need to customize everyman’s Hummer became a no limit rush to the extreme. Huge wheels, more TV’s than the ESPN Zone and a barking, burbling exhaust was required, lest you look like a soccer mom with delusions of grandeur. Hummer did a decent job designing a go any wear truck, but decent doesn’t cut it in this magazine. Immediately noticeable is the crazy skied-out, 14" lift from Bulletproof Suspension. Extensive driveline modifications were needed to make this truck actually run. The folks at Drivelines Inc. really know how to do it right and hooked this truck up the right way. Dampening is handled by top-of-the-line Fox 2.0 shocks with reservoirs. Without the reservoirs, the oil in the shocks would get too hot and bubble. Eventually the fluid would saturate with gas, changing the density of the oil and the suspension would get squishy. Billet shock clamps attach to the custom painted-to-match frame. But that is difficult to recognize past the fully chromed suspension. CTL Motorsports in Westminster CA did a fine job with this install and it shows. To support this much truck you need a strong wheel. Not just something flashy dipped in chrome, but a real tough workhorse of a wheel. For this job, the obvious choice is Weld. On this truck Weld used 17"x 4" Mountain Crushers and with 10,000lbs ratings for each wheel, they live up to the name. Then the tires are wrapped up in huge 49" x 21" x 17" IROKS tires. Knobby tires look best, but it is important to remember that the traction available is best managed by the negative space in the tread. Dirt, rocks and snow will create a barrier between the rubber and terra firma. Spaces and groves give this debris a place to go and maintain contact. The tread on these monsters can claw through just about any possible terrain and serve double duty as platforms for climbing into this beast.

Qashqai The Qashqai is a compact Crossover with an advanced electronic four-wheel drive system. It reflects Nissan’s belief that consumers’ tastes are changing to echo their lifestyles which are becoming more active. Buyers of compact Crossovers will want enough interior space for their family, the ruggedness of a 4x4, as well as the comfort and ease of driving of a traditional passenger car. In addition, buyers increasingly want a vehicle which is distinctive, allowing them to express themselves and to stand out from the crowd. The concept is the first complete design project to have come from Nissan Design Europe’s new facility which opened in London in January 2003 and is now home to over 50 international designers, modellers and support staff. The studio’s mission is to design the

next generation of Nissan cars for Europe. With the Qashqai, Nissan has been concentrating on customer segmentation to improve its understanding of the lifestyles and activities of its prospective customers. As a result, Nissan is better able to identify niches which will become market segments in years to come. Although a concept car, Nissan has recognized that prospective owners of the Qashqai would be based in an urban environment. They will be successful in their careers considering their age. As well as working hard during the week, their car will allow them to escape the city at weekends and play hard, seeking adventure with like-minded friends. Reflecting the lifestyles of its potential owners, the Qashqai offers space and flexibility. The interior of the car reflects

the varied role it will have to play, with an innovative folding seat arrangement allowing bikes, outdoor activity equipment and the weekly shopping to be easily stowed. This flexibility is aided by rear doors which are hinged on the back edge, allowing a massive loading aperture thanks to the lack of a Bpillar. Despite the lack of B-pillar, the structural strength of the Qashqai is uncompromised thanks to the individual seat mounting. The exterior design incorporates strong Nissan DNA seen in the design of the Micra, 350Z and Primera. The Qashqai’s large wheels and exaggerated wheel-arches give the vehicle a purposeful stance, echoing the strength of a large 4x4, but with delicate design touches which endow it with a softer, less aggressive look.

The CLK is often referred to as Mercedes Benz’s mid level coupe which most of us envision as the perfect car for the wife. Its compact size and shorter wheelbase make it the perfect car for "her" to roll around in while us macho men paint the town red in the larger CL. But the evil imagery of this bad rap is about to change and even impress you once you look at this one-of-kind CLK which happens to be owned by Shaquille O’ Neal. Yes. That’s right. The owner of this beautiful CLK is the Big Diesel – and former Laker himself. Before departing to Miami from Los Angeles, we had the opportunity to photograph his fully customized CLK and the list of modifications to his coupe are the most extensive we’ve seen in a while. Outside, the CLK features a full-on Lorinser body kit that is tapered off by a custom one-off wing which was designed per Shaq’s request. Since most of Shaq’s Benz’s feature custom bodywork it would’ve been against everything he stands for if he didn’t follow in the same light which is why the fenders of the vehicle have been pulled an extra 4-inches. After all bodywork was performed the vehicle was completely repainted in the factory black paint and then hooked up to a set of deep – and very wide – 19-inch custom AF115 chrome wheels which flaunt a staggered offset. Out back, the rims are wrapped in a 245/45 R19’s while the front offers up a smaller 235/35 R19 set of tires.

Given that the vehicle is owned by Shaq it was a must to add the Superman logo along with a custom grill designed by Strut. As with any ball player, the necessary tall man kit was installed and pushes the seats back an extra 10-inches through extended custom seat rails. With the seats all the way back, they rest up against the custom subwoofer enclosure which deletes the complete rear seating area. The fiberglass enclosure is finished off in leather and the design and application of the box are so well crafted by Da Shop – Shaq’s shop of choice – that it looks like it was a very expensive factory option. And where else would the Da Man have his car built? It only makes sense…..he brings it to Da Shop!

Inside, the suede A-pillars compliment the custom diamond stitched leather door panels while the dashboard’s center console was reworked in Blackwood and merged into place with a custom Alpine monitor. With an Alpine DVD/ CD player controlling the sounds, the mids and highs are kicked into place by a set of MB Quarts while the JL Audio 10W7 subwoofers bring the boom and the party to life. The system is powered by two JL Audio 1000.1 Mono Block amplifiers as well as one JL Audio 300.4-four channel amplifier. With all these mods, we’re sure that Mercedes Benz engineers are scratching their heads in awe as Da Shop has literally recrafted, recreated and rewritten the design code of the CLK and done a good job at doing so.

To spin huge ass tires like these requires lots and lots of power. Unfortunately, GM just didn’t give us enough. With all the smog requirements and warranty compliance issues, radical tuning is just not possible from the factory. That’s were performance mods come in. Remembering your motor is basically an air pump, we want lots of cool clean air. Volant makes top notch intakes and mass air sensors to boost power reliably, and they install pretty easy. Next, we need a bigger spark and Nology’s Hot Wire set carries our spark to a set of BERU spark plugs. A Hypertech Power Programmer controls all the details with the computer before the exhaust is expelled through Gibson headers and stainless steel exhaust. Moving inside the cab, through swing up Lamborghini style doors, we are greeted with baby ostrich seats and door panel inserts. Nothing about this interior looks stock. The word "Ducati" is synomis with class, style, speed and all things Italian. Few bikes are at home on the race track and the finest restaurant. Ducati owners can always be recognized in a sea of teenagers on the latest Japanese sportbikes. Referred to as the "Ferrari" of motorcycles, no other bike manufacture has as much heritage, prestige and class as Ducati. The rumble of the v-twin and the signature sound of the rattling dry clutch is as distinguishable as the growl of a V12. Owners of these bikes are bound by a set of unspoken rules. Aftermarket parts must be Italian, gear is to be of the finest leather, and parking is ALWAYS at the end of the lot in the company of other Italian bikes. Considering that Superbike Ducati's are available in limited color selections (yellow and red), personalizing one of these machines is no easy task. Rather then adding chrome and leather, carbon fiber and titanium are the accessories of choice for this class of bike. When it comes to paint, one way to find your bike in a Ducati Island of red, yellow and black is to purchase a race replica. DaimlerChrysler has commissioned a hand-built reproduction of the Dodge Tomahawk, the four-wheel, single passenger vehicle that has captivated enthusiasts in the United States and internationally since its debut. The Tomahawk replica, sculpted out of aluminum around 505 cubic inch, V-10 Dodge Viper engine, will be sold through prestigious Neimann Marcus Christmas book. The reproduction is priced $555,000. The sleek, rolling sculpture combines art-deco styling with extreme engineering in a vehicle that has come to symbolize DaimlerChrysler’s commitment to creativity and innovation. “Tomahawk is a scintillating example of what creative minds can do when given the opportunity to run free. It is a pure mechanical sculpture and a joyous celebration of the artistry and emotion of design” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President Design, Chrysler Group.

The Tomahawk reproduction will be fabricated by the original builders as a piece of automotive sculpture. It is intended for display only; the reproduction will not be fully operational and cannot be legally operated on public roads. The Tomahawk reproduction is featured on Page 61 of the Christmas Book from Neimann Marcus, the up-scale Dallas-based retailer. The bike will be delivered 90 days after the order is taken. Paging Johnny Rebel In these pages, we have brought you various cars and trucks of desire. Each vehicle representing the very pinnacle of what their respective manufactures can do with ordinary steel, aluminum, wood and dead animals. Exceptional performance, beauty in style, rarity in collectability and luxury bordering on decadence are the minimum requirements. These vehicles are trophies of success as much as means of transportation. Excess in the pursuit of perfection is expected. Near perfection is reserved for second place. The fortunate owners of these vehicles have highly refined taste; they expect only the very best product and do not question the price when the perfect example is available. Only the world’s most enticing automobiles are chosen for ownership. Owners of these cars have a very specialized thirst. Well, maybe we all have a thirst like this, but few of us can actually afford it to quench it. We have seen cars, trucks and motorcycles that deserve lusting after before. We have driven, ridden and flown most every object of lust any redblooded American could want, but we’ve never seen this. Sometimes a vehicle comes along that would not necessarily deserve a second look if not for its unconventional style. Oddity for the sake of being odd is trite. Introducing the Confederate Hellcat. Here we have a rebel in the market place, a motorcycle whose purpose is not fully understood. It’s not pretty enough to run with most v-twin powered two wheelers, yet way too unrefined to be confused with anything from the land of the rising sun. It’s a rebel. An anomaly. This bike is the "Pink" of the motorcycle industry.

Like any good uprising in America, it starts in the south. Confederate Motorcycles is an original equipment builder of American sports bikes located in Louisiana. Hell-bent on building an American bike with the legs to take on the best from overseas, these guys spare no effort. Starting with an exceptional S&S motor, this bike puts down over 130-horsepower. Keep in mind this motor is based on an air-cooled single cam v-twin designed for torque. The fact they managed to get this much horsepower out of an old design with out rewriting a few laws of physics or causing several explosions is impressive enough to buy one on merit. By comparison, large bore bikes from Honda and Kawasaki may be able to match the horsepower output, but those bikes are four cylinder, multivalve, DOHC spinning machines. Plus, they typically lack torque. This Confederate Hellcat could pull a third gear wheelie and pull out a tree stump. So much torque in fact, Confederate had to use a five-speed tranny of their own design just to handle the foot-pounds. I would like to have seen a sixth cog, but at any legal freeway speed the S&S motor shouldn’t spin to fast anyway. Keeping this rebel at legal speeds is the real challenge. Confederates next step to the ultimate rebel bike is strapping this workhorse of a motor to a chassis worthy of carrying it. The main structure starts with high tensile steel, somewhat confusing as all the other bikes with this kind of performance use aluminum. This can account for the higher than normal weight of the bike, somewhat offset with way too trick carbon fiber bodywork (more on this later). A big advantage of using steel is lower cost (but why carbon bodywork then?) and supreme rigidity.


ISSUESEVEN rpmmag.com Some motorcycle manufacturers like Honda chose to incorporate some flex in their frame designs (Super Hawk) in the interest of comfort. But on the track, this flexibility can lead to traction problems and thusly to lost races. That’s why Honda doesn’t race the Super Hawk. Another example of this rebels’ ingenious design is the frame also serves as the oil tank ala Bourget Motorcycles. This saves space in the engine area but also in creases the carrying capacity of the oil system, increases the exposure time for cooling and lowers the center of gravity for better cornering. This bike is somewhat larger than I would have expected. The wheelbase comes in at 62" and the seat height at 42". By comparison the Honda CBR1000RR due out this year brings a shorter wheelbase of 55.6" and a lower seat height of 32.5". Typically, the shorter the wheelbase of a bike, the faster the turn in. Maybe we can get some track time with these bikes and see just how big a difference those wheelbases will make. Over sixty hours are spent creating the frame, ensuring the ultimate quality and consistency. Putting this power to the ground is a suspension worthy of Laguna Seca. The front fork is a Marzocchi 50mm R.A.C. unit with full damping, rebound and preload adjustment. I haven’t ridden a bike with this setup before but by reputation these are excellent units, further demonstrating Confederates commitment to building world-class motorcycles. Outback, the Hell Cat uses dual Penske Racing coilovers. Most bikes don’t even use this type of design because of the expense and longevity problems. But these units are fully rebuildable. Coil-overs are top-notch shocks for extreme use. A super stiff chassis and top shelf suspension like this is not gonna

give multi-state touring comfort, but your gonna stick to the track like gum in your girls hair. The most important performance parts of any motorcycle are the binders. Most motorcycles will outperform their riders right out of the box. The brakes are what saves you when your performance level doesn’t match the performance level of the bike. Lucky for us, Confederate took this into account and bolted up some impressive hardware. Dual 300mm front discs clamped by sixpiston monoblock calipers can dislodge your retinas if you jump on the brakes to hard. The Honda brings 310mm discs to party, but only with four piston calipers up front. For the rear, the Hell Cat has a 280mm disc with a dual piston caliper. Hondas CBR1000RR only has a single piston caliper on a 220mm disc, but it weighs less. Track duty will be the true test of superiority. Finishing this all out assault on conventional motorcycling is the Hell Cats carbon bodywork. Way too sexy to be street legal, this finishing touch really brings the sensation of riding a piece of artwork to the senses. The work is flawless. Even the most extravagant paint job by anyone short of Michelangelo would be a travesty. Wellexecuted carbon fiber is an art by itself. What makes your local paint slinger think he can improve upon the beauty beneath the clear coat? So what is this bike for? By its odd mix of components this bike is hard to pigeonhole. It is definitely not a Harley clone powered cruiser. But it’s not quite light enough or sharp enough to knife up the road courses of North America and Europe. It’s more of a hooligan bike. It’s the parolee biker surrounded by racer boys and accountant-biker wannabe’s. It’s a rebel in a world of conformists. Only time and sales charts will tell if the south will rise again.

instyle Immersed in total luxury and in control of more power than is legal in some southern states, can give a man devious thoughts. Want to race the punk in the Z28? Chase a Corvette up a mountain road, or go stoplight to stoplight with a Viper? No problem. The Z28 doesn’t have the midrange power for a top gear pull, the Corvette driver better be on his best behavior before he spins out into the side of the mountain and sorry Viper guys, the big Mercedes has busted your torque output. ESP and ASR (MB speak for Electronic Stability Program and Automatic Slip Control) reign in any misplaced bravado, lest we forget we are piloting a luxury car. Not that 493hp is typical for a luxury car but, damn, it should be. AMG. Three letters signal to the world that this is a car to be reckoned with. The artist at AMG handcrafted an awesome power plant. Using a supercharger to pressurize the intake charge has turned an already pristine work of automotive engineering into mechanical art. 5.5 liters of supercharged v8 give us 493 horses @ 6100 rpm and enough torque to reverse the tides. 516 pound feet of tire melting, stoplight lunging, grin inducing torque propel this 4,317 pound luxoyacht to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, all the while returning 22 mpg on the highway.

Eco friendly, this Superman of a car is a hero in every respect. Finally see the value of this dual personality coupe but just can’t live without four doors? You’re in luck. Mercedes Benz has also developed the S55. Essentially an S class sedan with the same supercharged power plant, revised transmission and ESP/ASR suspension system of the CL coupe. More than likely, your friends are gonna want to ride with you now you’re a lotto winner. You need the four doors any way. Plus, the S55 is $8000 dollars less. Use that savings for hand waxes every month for the next couple years. Lastly, you’re left with accessorizing. Even Clark Kent needed designer specs. West Coast Customs has done an excellent job of outfitting these Mercedes with the best accessories in the business. No wheels can match the awesome subtly of these cars like the 20" Mulssane laced up on this CL55. Fronts sporting a 2.5" lip and the back wheels carrying a 3.5" lip bring this car to the forefront of blingdom. Wrapped up in 245/35/20 front and 275/30/20 rear, Pirelli P-Zero Nero tires, (the best in the business) accentuate the sporty nature of the car but don’t negate the overall luxury feel. The grip of these tires is excellent, yet the superior ride always associated with Mercedes is left intact.


instyle The S-class is almost too conservatively styled and desperately cries out for customization. If not for the folks at Fab Design by Globe Motorsports, this Mercedes would be lost in the world of high class performance luxury cars. I’m not usually a big fan of body kits, but this kit is so well done and improves the looks of this car so much, I would not consider buying this car with out it. The 20" GFG Trento 7 on the S-class bring the car to another level. Chrome reflection deep enough to swim in and a lip big enough to comb your hair in bring this setup together. Bold shape and design of the Trento 7’s add to the overall presence of the car without distracting from the graceful lines of the car. The contrast between the wheels and the car make each other look better than had they been first observed independently. Also wrapped in the same size Pirelli P-Zero Nero’s as the coupe, the ride is luxo-firm. So there you have it. Reporter and hero in one car and stylish upgrades to accent your ride, not dominate it. A simple answer to a question I loved pondering. Well, I got to go. They’re reading today’s winning numbers.

Born in Indiana, Karen was the child – and teenager – that most of girls hated. She was the prodigal child and because of all of her beauty and accomplishments, the one girl that would always make parents say, "Why can’t you be more like Karen?!" She was the child most parents would envy, and also the talented, multifaceted, cute kid on the block that most parents would dream of having – even though they would never admit it. On the flipside, she was girl that all the guys went ga-ga over and the one weakness that even the school bully would have trouble coping with. Her beauty would introduce us to our first case of stuttering and she was the reason many of us began to steal since we’d give up most of our lunch money for her. As a child, she was not only an active part of the softball team but also a key member of the volleyball team, Cheerleading Squad as well as an award winning clarinet player who took home 1st place in the Michigan State Competition four years in a row. After graduating in 1989, she went on to Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Aside from her educational background, Karen also has aspirations to one day open up a learning center for deprived children. But is this plan nothing more than a dream or might it become a simple accomplishment that she just hasn’t got around to conquering? Considering her prior accomplishments, we’d have to bank on the latter as this young, determined and energetic woman has accomplished more than some groups of friends have achieved in a lifetime! The story of her success may have begun as a child but her career making moves started when a friend told her to enter a Swimwear Contest at a local nightclub. She won the 1st round of competition and was invited to the finals where she ended up crowning the number one position and the Michigan State Finals.

About a month later, after meeting a Playboy photographer at the prior contest, she flew into Los Angeles where she tested for Playboy. "I was so nervous!" admits the bombshell. " I did not know what to expect. Remember, I was a small town girl from Michigan!" But after a few test shots and anxious days of waiting, she received a phone call which would forever change her life as she was about to find out that she was going to become Miss December 1997. "I honestly didn't think that I was going to be accepted considering that Playboy has tens of thousands of girls apply every year," says Karen. Of course, things got even better. After more than doubling all the other 1997 Playmates votes (through Playboy TV, Playboy Online and through Fan Call-ins), she then went on to capture the coveted Playmate of the Year. But life for Karen is more than just about working the camera and her tons of fans. "I really enjoy working," she says, "I have a lot of fun in front of the camera. But, I certainly like to relax when I am not working by hitting the gym or sitting at home listening to music (sometimes loud and sometimes mellow)." But her other interests besides her two cats, Brittany and Brandy, and her dog Dante are her rides which she says, "I like getting in my car and taking a drive…I like speed! Oh, by the way, I still like to eat!!!!" Ahhhh yes…not only were those words of wisdom for any gear head but also a woman that all RPM readers can not only relate to but also appreciate. Before you can understand Eric Bergs’ home, it helps to know these things: automotive parts supplier mogul, car enthusiast and race car driver, art collector and father of three. "I like to take everything to the ultimate level," Eric says. "combine the fun with the quality." Yes, Eric is a classic case, a cross between an adrenaline junkie and a technophile. And the serendipitous results come alive in this Tarzana, California. home he shares with his wife, Stacey, and their 2,3 and 6 year old children. It should come as no surprise that the favorite family hang out, the lush sanctuary of their media room, sees a lot of activity. Bliss provided me with a conceptual rendering and an estimate. "Seeing your future room on a computer generated image is a powerful tool" states Berg. The project was a go! Bliss Home Theaters is a turn-key operation. They handle every detail from engineering, construction to design and integration. They also design and build their own custom furniture. "I was so excited to sit down with Bliss and design my custom couches and chairs along with deciding on curtains and lighting…It was so much fun" states Stacey.

Eric is a meticulous man and is accomplished at what he does. "I started to plan this room myself and very quickly realized that pros were needed to fulfill my vision!" Eric lives in an area that is populated with several million dollar homes and many have high end home theaters. He began to do his research and time after time a company always came in with very high praises "Bliss Home Theaters". "I met with the two principals, Robert & George Bliss, I have to say they remind me of myself". Passion, energy and creativeness. After listening to their thoughts he realized that the room he had originally planned on using was too small. Removing a bathroom and a hallway would gain the precious real estate needed. It was an unforeseen, but a great idea.

Todd Starks began the major remodel of the room as he simultaneously began fabricating the custom millwork. With the final design and fabrics decided on, the furniture production could begin. Steve Lane ran all the electrical and the Bliss team "prewired" the room. The process took about 11 weeks. . The room was now ready for the final steps. ESC Draperies came in to hang the automated drapes that embrace the entire room. The motorized drape at the rear of the room opens 6 inches to reveal the Marantz projector lens. Reliable Flooring installed the subtle pattern carpet just before the 17 foot wide custom couch and complimenting chairs arrived.

Bliss techs; Guy Levandofsky, Adam Dunlop, Rory Roach and Mitch Bryant began installing the electronics in the custom rack systems, while George Bliss programmed the Crestron touchpanel system. "The room actually exceeded what we expected" stated the Bergs. The idea of a multi-function room was perfectly executed. It’s a family room, entertainment room with concession stand and refrigerator and of course, with a touch of a button my 3 year old can operate the home theater, emerging from retractable decorative panels in front of the screen to the drapes opening in the rear. Volvo Versatility Concept Car (VCC)

A hint of the future of Volvo car design was unveiled amid a flurry of photographers' flashbulbs at the 73rd Geneva International Motor Show. The Volvo Versatility Concept Car (VCC) takes the estate concept to new levels of performance, technology and luxury. The exterior design of the Versatility Concept Car (VCC) is both dramatic and simple; perhaps a reflection of the fact that two of Volvo's design studios have joined forces in its creation: Barcelona in Spain and GĂśteborg in Sweden. Some of the inspiration has been obtained from Volvo's rich design heritage; the distinctive rear design with a glass tailgate, also featured in the Safety Concept Car, traces its roots to the 1971 Volvo P1800 ES. The large, distinguished grille is descended from the 1968 Volvo 164. Among the most noticeable features in the front are the slim, vertically stacked headlamps. The inner of the two lamps uses a system known as 'Static Bending Light' with three light units aimed at different angles. The top fixture points straight ahead and performs as a conventional dipped beam. As the car turns, however, sensors linked to the steering activate units two and finally three to illuminate the direction in which the car is headed. This system carves out a superior light pattern in the dark when driving on twisting roads, thus boosting safety standards. The outer headlamp contains main beam and side marker lamps. The VCC design is also characterized by the absence of a B-pillar, made possible by hinging the back doors at the rear instead of the front. This design promotes the display of the remarkable interior, but is, for safety reasons, not intended for production cars. Elegant simplicity perhaps best epitomizes the VCC's instrument binnacle. This is an evolution of Volvo Cars' current product programs, in particular the XC90 instrument panel. By minimizing the number of design elements, visual pollution is reduced. The surface finishes and colors harmonize with the other elements of the interior. The interior of

the Versatility Concept Car has no visible conventional air vents. Instead, air is distributed via concealed outlets. The latter prevents unwanted reflections in the windscreen and provides silent and more uniform air distribution. Additional air is ducted through the tunnel console. The fixed-center steering wheel allows more controls to be positioned on the wheel, including buttons for the Automated Shifted Manual gearbox. The ergonomic benefits are that the switches and controls are always in the same position. Safety advantages include the possibility for the airbag to be designed for optimum performance. The use of high-strength steel in the construction of the A-pillars allows a slimmer design for significantly improved visibility - without sacrificing safety. The truly unique and luxuriously designed seating arrangement is beautifully crafted using the traditions of the saddle-maker. Thick, saddle-quality Havana hides complimented with Tempur-foam pads (a Swedish invention) for maximum comfort. The primary objective for the luggage compartment is to create the same sensorial impact as that of the passenger's lounge. The application of colors and highgrade materials together with minute attention to detail conveys an exclusive atmosphere without sacrificing practicality. For example, the tumble-mill soft leather for the load floor is both durable and luxurious. For maximum versatility and convenience, the load floor is electrically operated via controls mounted on the D-pillar. The floor slides out from the luggage compartment making it easier to load heavy or awkward items. Beneath the load floor are two storage compartments, one heated and one chilled. The roof panel features an X-frame with ambient lighting. It is operated by slider controls in the overhead console. An illuminated IC (Inflatable Curtain) logo offers another reminder of the safety system incorporated in the roof panel.

The F4 is a legend dedicated to motorcyclestyle and technique. It is the symbol of the beauty on two wheels and reflects the inspiration and understanding that has enlivened its designers in defining this motorcycle cult object. A design and technology specimen in constant evolution reaching, with the new F4 1000S, its synthesis in performance and emotional limits. The star of this new race is the new propeller able to express the domineering 165 horse power strength. A strength that permits the F4 1000S to cleave the air reaching a speed that opens doors to a new legend: that of the most beautiful and fastest motorcycle in the world. THE DESIGN: The F4 1000S is distinguished from its less cylinder capacity sister by the introduction of new racing colours that enhance the elegance of the F4 1000S’s volumes. These are on a silver base in contrast with the new yellows or blues also extended to the saddle. For traditionalists, the classic red-silver racing colours are still available. The F4 1000S is also different from the 750cc version for the following aesthetic details: • New logo 37 MV Agusta world champion on the airbox back. • Tank guard with F4 1000 logo • Instruments with tachometer on a white background and F4 1000 logo • Saddle in the shade of the yellow or blue racing colours

• F4 1000 plate on the steering head EQUIPMENT: There are many innovations in terms of equipment that differentiate the F4 1000S from the 750cc version and particularly: 1. New semi-handlebars. 2. Plexiglas raised dome. 3. Adjustable foot rests. 4. Rear quick-release rim. 5. Catalyser. 6. New rear Sachs Racing shock absorber equipped with hydraulic control of the pre-load spring. CHASSIS The chassis of the new F4 1000 S traces the existent lines of the 750cc version and is still the only one in the manufactured fourcylinders to be made with a chromium molybdenum steel pipe girder structure. An advantageous solution in terms of cross compactness, mechanical accessibility and torsion rigidity entirely built in the MV Agusta factory in Morazzone. The pipe structure is joined to the fork hub plates where both the rear suspension rocker arm and saddle chassis are connected. A great style sensation, the single-arm fork sculpture has become a demonstration of the creativity and skill of CRC technicians for conceptual rationality and beauty.


THE SUSPENSIONS The chassis section communes with high level suspensions. The rear Sachs Racing shock absorber equipped with both dual compression calibration (high low-speed) and hydraulic control of the pre-load spring is new. The forecarrige is distinguished from the 750S version by the Marzocchi fork with 50 mm shafts, a record value in standard production. The F4 1000S and 1+1, like the less cylinder capacity sister, is equipped with an Ohlins steering shock absorber positioned crosswise to the driving direction. This unit is anchored to the chassis on both ends in order to be able to work symmetrically. Especially seductive are the steering plates; the upper one has a diamond prismatic form while the lower one has a frontal bridge appearance that improves the air flow to the radiator. BRAKING SYSTEM The front braking system is made up of two exclusive “Nissin F4” 6 contrasting piston collets (with differentiated diameters) that work on 310mm diameter disks. On the F4 1000S and 1+1, these units are made with aluminum instead of steel flanges. The rear

brake is the same equipped with a 4 contrasting piston collets that works on a 2100mm diameter disk. The front Nissin clutch and brake controls boast patented liquid tank lowered positioning in order to obtain a complete view of the instrument panel, the latter also equipped with a watch function. The splendid star design that characterizes the 17 inch wheels of the F4 1000S e 1+1 rubberized with the new Michelin Pilot Power or Dunlop D208 and Metzeller Sportec M1 are the same. The front tire size is 120/65 and rear 190/50 or 180/55. THE ENGINE The new 998cc engine, initially baptized with the name F5, was born in 2001. While still tracing what was conceptually proposed in the 750 EV configuration, the new propeller was subject to a series of important innovations also maturing thanks to the experience acquired in Endurance races with Steven Casaer’s Maxim team. In two years of work the Belgian driver grinded tens of thousands of kilometers obtaining encouraging results in racing terms but especially providing precious data for the evolution of the new propeller.

A 'custom-built' vehicle in a 'made-to-measure' suit by a great tailor based on a production vehicle of great prestige. This, very briefly, is the Bertone Jet 2 (the name is a tribute to the Aston Martin Jet created by Nuccio Bertone in 1961, based on the Aston Martin DB4 GT as a one-off). A Concept car developed from the Aston Martin Vanquish, the Bertone Jet 2 has the same mechanical lay out, the floorpan structure (the wheel base has been lengthened by 210 mm. to allow two rear seats to be added to the original version) and all the BIW elements 'under the skin' to limit investments and not alter the elements which are subject to homologation. Bertone Jet 2 expresses the concept of a modern 'custom-built' car. In other words a vehicle which, on the basis of a non-perceptible carry over nucleus, is characterized by a completely new body. In this sense the Bertone Jet 2 re-proposes, in modern terms, a product linked to the traditional history of Italian coachbuilders which dressed the most enchanting engines of the time in 'haute couture'. In recent years, the public has determined a marked division of the market in niche products. This diversification in demand entails massive economic investments for the manufacturers. The Bertone Jet 2 is an example of how Bertone could help the manufacturers to diversify their own range by preparing 'custombuilt' vehicles, exactly as they did in the fifties and sixties, with all the quality and safety standards of a modern automobile manufacturer. The proposal expressed by the Bertone Jet 2 has been made sustainable from the manufacturer's point of view, thanks to a maximum synergy with the components of the original model. From the engineering point of view, Bertone has respected all the structural limits of the original vehicle, the modification of which would have entailed high levels of investment (which would not have allowed to contain the price difference of the custom-built vehicle). At the same time, the finished vehicle is

characterized by a specific identity which is so strong that it can be presented as a new model. To the hypothetical final customer, the decision to work with limited investments could translate into a reasonable price increase, to justify the possession of an exclusive object, a vehicle for a few refined connoisseurs. The point of departure for the styling definition was the search of a Bertone identity with respect to the classic Aston Martin features. The car body, originating from sinuous lines and tight 'geometrical' features, is a synthesis of the two brand identities. The flowing shape follows a forward leaning belt line which rises towards the tail; a graphical treatment which enhances the physical power of the Bertone Jet 2 through flowing and natural phrasing. The idea of movement is resumed by a large transparent roof, which emphasizes the dynamism and the impetus of the vehicle. In the front part the classic Aston Martin grille remains, with additional air ducts to cool the disc brakes. The flush cover headlights propose an evolved graphic with respect to the original model. The rear view focuses on the vertical tailgate, the outline of which repeats the shape of the Aston Martin grille. The Bertone Jet 2 presents the classic interior configuration of the 2+2 coupĂŠ, made possible by a sizeable increase in the wheelbase with respect to the original model. The real flexibility of use of the 'grand tourer' is expressed also by means of fitting solutions such as the two rear seats, which fold and store away in the floor, to make way for an exceptional loading space for a vehicle of this category. The finishing in matt pear-wood, satinized aluminum trim with upholstery in leather, embossed using an innovative procedure, are a tribute to the luxurious Italian motorboats of the fifties and sixties, but also an ironical wink to the hypothetical customer of this kind of vehicle, who is used to surround himself with precious materials.
