by Robin Brenner, MLS, Creator of No Flying No Tights A little vocabulary To demystify the terms readers use when discussing manga, here are a few important terms to remember: Comics: Most of you can identify comics as a medium, but it’s important to remember that Japanese manga are comics. “Comics” is an umbrella term and includes everything from comic strips to comics books to graphic novels to manga. Just like the medium of film encompasses shorts, television series, and feature films, comics contain forms distinguished by narrative length. Manga: Manga is simply the Japanese word for print or digital comics. Anime: Many new to Japanese pop culture confuse manga and anime, but while manga refers to comics on a page, anime refers to Japanese animation. How do I read this? Manga does read from right to left (and remember, this isn’t “backwards”...ask anyone who reads Hebrew or Arabic), and it may take English readers new to the format a few tries to adjust their orientation.
Just who is this for, anyway? In Japan, manga is published not in single-issue comic books but in anthology magazines aimed at a particular, gendered audience. So, most manga will target one of these audiences:
Introduction
KNOW YOUR MANGA!
• Kodomo manga: Created for kids (Pokémon Adventures, Happy Happy Clover) • Shonen manga: Created for guys from around the age of ten up through high school (Naruto, Death Note) • Shojo manga: Created for girls from around age ten up through high school (Cactus’s Secret, Ouran High School Host Club) • Seinen manga: Created for men from college age and up (Vagabond, 20th Century Boys) • Josei manga: Created for women from college age and up (Ristorante Paradiso, Ôoku) (This, however, does not always predict who will read a manga; there is an enormous amount of audience crossover.) Manga is for everyone! There is literally a manga out there for any reader. Manga is a format, not a genre, and thus can tell any kind of story. In Japan, everyone reads manga. Settling down with manga after a long day would be akin to settling down for a television show after a long day in the US. The genres and types of stories expand to capture all kinds of audiences. Know a boy who wants to learn about dinosaurs while laughing his pants off? Pick up Dinosaur Hour. Want a story for an incurable foodie? Check out Oishinbo. Need a coming-of-age story for the college student next door? Give them solanin. Eager for some tense historical drama? Try Vagabond or Ôoku. Yearning for smart, complex science fiction? Look no further than Urasawa’s Pluto or 20th Century Boys. Should I be worried about content? For we librarians, the target audience categories (shonen, shojo, etc.) will help you anticipate what a particular title might contain, but publisher-recommended age ratings and journal and industry reviews will help you determine whether a particular title is appropriate for your community and collection. If in doubt, ask your fellow librarians! With listservs like Graphic Novels in Libraries and review sites like No Flying No Tights, the resources and colleagues are out there. See Additional Resources on the opposite page for a full list. Does manga all look the same? The answer to this question is fairly simple: no, they don’t all look the same! True, manga creators all share a common background of technique, production, and artistic traditions, but any reader can tell you the variations are just as noticeable as the variety in art we see in US comics. 1

Introduction
Get to know your manga creators Unlike US comics, in which characters are frequently owned by publishers, manga creators either own or co-own their creations with their publishers. In this setup, creators decide if and when a series ends. Unlike our own mainstream comics, where SpiderMan and Batman are still going strong after decades of story lines, Japanese creators and publishers choose one story to tell, and when they’re done, they’re done. Sequel and spin-off series do happen but are relatively rare. For readers, this means that instead of following only one series or one character, fans follow creators. Once a reader finds a creator whose style and story really speaks to them, they’ll go looking for the rest of their work. There are how many volumes? The best way to understand why most manga titles are series is to think of them as closer to television series than feature films, or to book series as opposed to stand-alone novellas. The best play with timelines, stretch the limits of the format itself, and add layer upon layer to the narrative with each chapter, each volume. Some engage readers in a frothy soap opera while others reach the intensity of epic dramas like Game of Thrones or Lost.
make the final product too different, but the way manga is produced has generated a number of significant features for readers and for collectors. A few differences to keep in mind... Notice symbols and gestures. Ask a fellow manga reader if you can’t puzzle out what a particular symbol means. I’ve never met a fan unwilling to help out new readers, and any fan can be an expert. Most manga take as many pages as needed to tell their story. Like television shows, manga feature extended character development and complex plots involving rich history and deliberately paced revelations.
There is literally a manga out there for any reader. Manga is a format, not a genre, and thus can tell any kind of story.
If you have volumes 2, 8, 11, and 12 of a series, it’s not going to make narrative or emotional sense. If you’re starting a collection, try to stick to new series so you can be assured of continuing the popular series and, if you want some older favorites, start with the first few volumes or omnibus editions to generate excitement about the format. If you do get a series, commit to buying that series all the way through to the end. If you don’t, you’ll be leaving your readers with only up to season two of Lost or without those final five chapters of their favorite book.
The Manga Industry One important but frequently overlooked difference between US comics and Japanese manga is that they are products of a very different business model. One may not think this would
Many anime are adapted from manga, and they do share a common visual language, but the key difference is in the format. Manga also contains a language of symbols and signals that new readers learn as they go. For example, the page background, a character’s eye shape, a gesture, a floating symbol, and a sound effect all add to the story. Readers are expected to know and understand all of these elements to decipher and process the story. These culturally defined references mean reading manga has a significant learning curve, so don’t get frustrated. Don’t worry if you don’t catch every cultural note or symbol, but pay attention to context and build on your knowledge with each page read.
Manga is unfairly stereotyped, as comics in general have been, as being inappropriate or filled with explicit sexuality and violence. What causes this confusion is stereotypes colliding with cultural differences. Here in the US, comics are still thought to be a children or teen’s medium. Manga has been created for adults since the 1960s and so manga can contain mature themes, from sex to violence to sophisticated plots and ideas. The difference is these comics are intended for mature audiences, and many new readers don’t connect that comics could be written for adults. Similarly, titles aimed at older teens will include different content than those aimed at kids or younger teens.

Even if you don’t know (or care) about basketball, Slam Dunk shows you all the ins and outs of the game without losing you on the sidelines. The characters feel like real people and their sense of competitiveness, frustration, and elation when they win or lose comes across in a surprisingly honest way. Inoue’s artwork also shows true genius, depicting complicated freeze frames of basketball action in a way that is surprisingly easy to follow. In the end, Slam Dunk is a pretty uplifting story, and one that truly stands out. If you only ever read one sports manga, Slam Dunk should be it.”

Kamisama Kiss by Julietta Suzuki
“The thing that really elevates this series for me is how Nanami (the main character) handles the weird new situations she finds herself in. She basically raised herself, so she’s used to taking charge and getting things done, but she’s also kind and caring. It’s nice to see the main character of a shojo manga be a natural leader. And despite being primarily a comedy, there are some pretty poignant moments as well.”
Hope:
Loveless by Yun Kouga
For a series best known for portraying a world where children have cat ears and adults do not, gorgeously illustrated Loveless touches on surprisingly deep themes of trust, family and affection. Twelve-year-old Ritsuka wants details of his brother’s supernatural murder and his own fragmented memory, but answers are never forthcoming from the adults in his life, particularly the beautiful, broken Soubi. Fans have remained loyal to this slow-releasing series over two decades. That’s because it’s a perfect tease; the romantic and emotional tension between Ritsuka and Soubi as they face real trauma injects the story with a warm, fraught buzz without ever finding consummation. But the true draw is veteran manga artist Yun Kouga’s art, a perfect union of her fluid yet stark designs and a story just dreamy and psychological enough to pull the covers off the real world and expose the floating world of emotions underneath. As a longtime fan myself, I am delighted to see this hit series continue through VIZ.

Cross Game by Mitsuru Adachi
“Shonen Sunday, the legendary magazine that brought us Ranma 1/2 and Case Closed, is known for its fun stories featuring the day-to-day lives of loveable characters. In recent years, one of the best series that Shonen Sunday has given us is the amazing slice of life story Cross Game. This wonderful story about Ko Kitamura and his misfit baseball team will make make you laugh, cry and get excited with their trials and tribulations on and off the baseball field. This manga not only has action packed baseball games that rival Death Note in the suspense they deliver, but it is also surprisingly emotional from the very first volume!” 17
