Editor's Letter Petrol Ofisi was the market share leader in 2020 with the 28,6% share of the market in lubricant and chemicals industry in Turkey. Due to this success Petrol Ofisi has continued its market leadership for its 10 th year. The new regulation that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) enacted on January 1, 2020 concerns the lubricant sector closely. According to the new regulation, the global sulfur limit for bunker fuels will be reduced, which will significantly affect the refinery and base oil industry. IMO 2020 may result in reduced capacity of Group I plants and increased volumes of Group II and III plants. Nynas Turkey General Manager Guney Devrim Ildiri shared his views on this subject. In the first quarter of this year, two major races will be held in Turkey. Shell Helix became the title sponsor of Turkey Rally Championship which will start in February and end in October 2020. MotoBike Istanbul, the Turkey's largest motorcycle and the bicycle event will be held at the end of February this year and the main sponsor of which will be Motul. You can read our magazine interview with Motul Turkey's General Manager Mr. Dmitry Bakumenko on the contributions of the brand to motor sports. Onyx Insight and Castrol develop independent oil sensor for the wind industry O
NYX InSight, the leading provider of predictive maintenance to the wind industry, together with Castrol, one of the leading experts in industrial lubricants, have embarked on a multi-phase study designed to uncover the potential of combining oil and vibration data on the accuracy of wind turbine health monitoring. With the objective to bring the most innovative and advanced predictive maintenance solution to the wind industry market, ONYX InSight and Castrol have completed laboratory testing to measure the effectiveness of sensors to the changing conditions of oil in a simulated wind turbine environment. The tests were carried out using a range of oil sensor technologies, with each sensor type tested in multiple oils from three separate vendors to ensure comprehensive results. The second phase is now in progress and has seen a rigorous program of oil sensor installations in a commercial wind farm. Data from the field shows excellent correlation between oil sensor and vibration condition monitoring system (CMS) outputs relating to a developing gearbox bearing failure – giving operators even more confidence in the detection algorithm. The trials are helping ONYX InSight and Castrol refine new approaches for an advanced, integrated CMS by combining data from oil condition, vibration sensors and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
Increasing efficiencies to help reduce levelized energy costs The pioneering study comes in response to the industry’s need to increase efficiencies to help lower levelized cost of energy. The businesses believe that combining oil data with vibration data offers significant diagnostic advantages that improve maintenance planning across a turbine or fleet when deployed together with machine learning and engineering expertise. Bruce Hall, CEO of ONYX InSight, said: “Current predictive maintenance solutions can already offer significant O&M cost-savings. By adding an additional data stream through combining oil and vibration data, accuracy increases. This allows our customers to generate even higher cost savings.” Phil Booker, international application engineer at Castrol, adds, “We have been at the forefront of supplying best-inclass carbon neutral lubricants to extend wind turbine lifecycles. Now we are working with ONYX InSight to ensure that O&M teams have the knowledge they need to help propel growth in wind energy.”

Lubricant packages “
The Lubricant Packaging Market 2019 In-Depth Analysis of Industry Growth Trends & Forecast up to 2024” indicates that plastic dominated over seventy percent of the packaging market in 2016 with its durability, accessibility and cost effectiveness. Polyethylene accounts for forty percent of this share. Aluminium has sixty percent share in the metal packaging market as a lightweight, abundant and low-cost material. Among packages, kegs and drums produce the highest income while it is expected that demand for pails will increase in the near future. It is estimated that positive growth indicators in the automotive and energy sectors will shape the lubricant packaging market, whereas the market focuses on subjects such as using innovative materials in packaging, recycling and eco-design solutions, refill, decreasing the carbon and water footprint of packaging in final product, etc. Lubricant manufacturers’ and packaging suppliers’ preferring sustainable alternatives is also very important for packaging waste management because each end-oflife lubricant package is a valuable raw material. This fact should be remembered. Waste packages and plastics in particular should gain added value in economy by being recycled and/or upcycled.
22
LUBRICANT WORLD
Regulation on Waste Management (2015), Regulation on the Control of Packaging Waste (2017) and Zero Waste Regulation (2019) impose obligations for lubricant packages. Within the scope of the “Regulation on Recycling Share” dated December 31, 2019, it is aimed to determine, declare, collect and monitor the recycling shares to be collected from those who release/import packages. With this Regulation, the concepts of Recycling Share (GEKAP) and Deposit have become an obligation for manufacturers. “Deposit” is the system which is established for accepting returns from users or consumers for the products/ goods that are supplied to the market with a certain material value, and GEKAP declarations are supposed to be submitted and implemented. The obligation to make GEKAP payments starts when the products are supplied to the internal market or imported. The GEKAP amount to be paid for lubricants as from January 1, 2020 has been designated as “50 Kuruş/kg”. In the draft law on the Turkey Foundation for Zero Waste, it is aimed “to raise awareness for protecting the environment, to carry out activities for establishing, mainstreaming and developing the zero waste management system for an effective implementation, to facilitate the establishment and development of the deposit
system, to implement the deposit systems and to ensure coordination among all parties. The entire legislation stipulates the fulfilment of broader manufacturer liability by lubricant manufacturers for their packages. Our beautiful country and plant also expects the fulfilment of this critical liability. The issues that should be revised according to the information shared with me by lubricant manufacturers, which provide full sectoral support to GEKAP for the future of our country and environment: - How GEKAP will be collected and whether it will be included in the invoice should be clarified. - Some GEKAP obligants and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) are given exemption and net settlement opportunity. But inclusion in invoice, declaration and disclosure of evidence aspects should be clarified. - The GEKAP amount paid for import remains
within the product cost if an imported good is exported. There is no net settlement. Loss of the added value created here should be prevented. - Process lubricants are raw material for the production of rubber materials, thermoplastic materials, explosives and textile chemicals. These lubricants do not create waste. In these productions, costs of lubricant manufacturers automatically increase due to GEKAP. It is not possible for these firms, which mostly produce for export, to cope with an approximately 5-10% cost increase. These sectors, which receive incentives, will also face market loss. Thus, a net settlement or return mechanism should be established for lubricant consumers. When we make a rough calculation of annual GEKAP sum from lubricants, we find a very high amount. Appreciation of this potential economic amount for lubricant waste management and upcycling in particular for the sake of our green planet, blue planet is for the good of our country.

Journal bearing design criteria - VI Oil flow in bearing and leak flow at bearing edges S
ufficient amount of oil should enter the bearing in order to form a hydrodynamic oil layer with the bearing operation parameters (such as speed, lead, oil viscosity, bearing width, bearing diameter, etc.) that are sufficient to carry the bearing load between journal and bearing surface in radial journal bearings. The amount of oil spilling from the edges of the bearing is as important as the amount of oil that first enters the bearing. After the oil film layer is fully formed, which means the flow through the bearing is equal to the amount of oil leaking at the edges of the bearing when it has become a regime, it is thought that the peripheral length of the oil layer has reached the peripheral length stipulated by the lubrication theory. Some part of the oil supplied to the bearing moves in the direction of rotation on the bearing surface with the rotating shaft, while some part of it flows out from the edges of the bearing and leaves the bearing surface. This amount of oil leaking from the bearing edges is important for controlling the temperature rather than the load carrying capacity of the bearing. The more oil flows from the edges of the bearing, the faster the bearing cools down and the better the temperature is kept under control. If the amount of oil moving with the rotating shaft decreases and if there

is too much oil leakage at the edges of the bearing, the load carrying capacity of the oil film will decrease due to the declining peripheral length of hydrodynamic pressure. Moreover, the oil film pressure distribution around the bearing will change its form. As a result, the load carrying capacity will get lower, minimum oil film thickness of the oil layer will decrease, and the bearing temperature will increase. The metallic contact risk will increase on journalbearing surfaces because temperature increase will cause a negative decrease in viscosity. Oil leaks at the edges of the bearing cause an increase in friction coefficient. If the flow rate of the oil supplied to the bearing is designated too high, it will make a positive impact on the cooling of the bearing although it may not directly affect the load carrying capacity. The required flow rate can be calculated using the practical formulas, charts, tables or computer programs that are available in the lubrication literature. Engine oil user guide VISCOSITY GRADE:
is the main feature of an engine oil and is important for product selection
Signification of grades
xx W- yy xx refers to viscosity when cold
yy refers to viscosity when hot
(measured at different temperatures)
(measured at 100 °C)
The lower the viscosity when cold, the more fluid the oil is at low temperatures and the more easily it can be pumped.
The higher the viscosity when hot, the more viscous the oil is.
For example, a 0W-20 or 5W-30 oil will make start-ups easier and will protect engines during trips to cold regions. These high technology “fluid” oils will meet the requirements of recent engines.
For example, a 15W-40 or 20W-50 oil has been developed for use in hot countries, and their “viscous” nature makes them suitable for older engines.
POINTS TO REMEMBER New-generation engine oils and those currently being developed by TOTAL are of increasingly fluid grades: 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30 and 0W-16.
