Also, you’ll inherit the Snowbunny before too long, treat her with respect. To Kirsten Ferguson I leave long phone calls where you always seemed to convince me of something, like maybe Sarah Palin might not be so bad after all, rapping to “Did It On ‘Em,” and your uncanny ability to always make me smile. Thank you for making my senior year so amazing. To Lydia Hatfield I leave the public forum debate team, may you lead them to future victory. And oh yeah, good phone call. To Jack Adamek I leave an empty slot in the state debate tournament next year, and the knowledge that you’re Big Lebowski shirt is the greatest thing ever. To Amin Kraimeche and the rest of the tennis team, I leave a ton of drills, jokes, Coach Logan, and the promise of future tennis glory. Emotions run high when dropping kids off at college Nahla Aboutabl

P

online editor

eople always focus on students when it comes time for moving into college. City residents complain about the traffic and the busy shopping centers, but there’s a different side to the story that every college kid’s parent can tell. Lynda Blackwell, the administrative secretary at Harrisonburg High School has dropped her two children off at college, and says that the experience was both exciting and sad for her family. “My daughter went to college in 2005. She graduated that year, and then went to Radford University. We borrowed a friend’s van that day and used our car because she had a lot of things she wanted to take with her to her dorm,” Blackwell said. Blackwell recounts the moving in process as easy and that the upperclass students helped her daughter take her bags up to her dorm.

“After getting her dorm ready, we, my husband and I, took our daughter out for lunch then we left. I didn’t cry until I was on my way home,” Blackwell said. Many parents fear the day they will have to send their kids to college, but to Blackwell, it was a matter of trust that made her feel confident her daughter would be ok at her new home. “You trust the values that you’ve raised your children on and that these values will stay with them while they’re in college,” Blackwell said. “We’ve raised our daughter knowing that she will get a college degree and so we were ready for such a day. It was still sad to see her leave because my daughter and I are very close.” Blackwell’s son also went off to college, but stayed close by. “It didn’t get any better when my son went to college. He went to JMU after getting the Centennial scholarship. He thought we would run into each other, but that didn’t happen,

which is a relief for him but a disappointment for me. JMU is like it’s own little city, so I don’t get to see him that much,” Blackwell said. Blackwell still tries to keep in touch with her son, though. “Sometimes I send him a text and just arrange for us to have lunch together. I try not to hover, even though it’s really tempting,” Blackwell said. But whether parents have to drop their children off at a nearby college, or at a far one, the parents’ belief in a college education eases the pain of letting go. n

or senior Nevin Heckman, college is a mixture of lifelong desires and unforeseen expectations. He always wanted to be a collegiate athlete, but never expected only a 15-minute drive to his new campus. Heckman will be attending Bridgewater college and running cross country, as well as indoor and outdoor track for the Eagles. He will be a distance specialist in track, moving up from his current race distances of 400m and 800m. “My coach joked that he was going to pacify the first year by letting me run the quarter and the 800, but the year after that, he’s going to bump me up to the 800 and mile, probably just depending on how much endurance I gain.” One of the reasons Heckman did decide on Bridgewater for his collegiate career is Coach Brian Flynn. “I really, really like my coach,” Heckman said, referring to Flynn the head men’s cross country coach, and the distance coach for the indoor and outdoor track teams. Flynn intends for Heckman to move up in distance depending on his endurance. When it came down to crunch time for his decision, Heckman had narrowed the field to two main options: Bridgewater and Roanoke college, both where he would further his athletic career. “Roanoke was my second option and they cost way more than Bridgewater,” Heckman said. “I was totally trying to avoid being close to home, but it wasn’t worth the money just to be two hours away.” Money talks, and it persuaded Heckman to stay just outside of Harrisonburg, as opposed to the separation provided by Roanoke. “That was my number one priority: getting away from Harrisonburg. It would take a while to run back home though.” It would take Heckman around an hour to run back to his house at a race pace,

though he humbly attempted to say it would take longer. He doesn’t intend to re-enter the city of Harrisonburg at any cost during the semester, however, in an attempt to remove himself from the town he grew up in. From an academic perspective, Heckman is entirely unsure about his future focus of study. For now, he intends to “major in running”, though he denies any potential for a post-collegiate career. “There’s no way I could be a professional runner. I’m barely allstate for AA.” Even without a shot at professional running, Heckman will certainly have a shot at glory at Bridgewater. Heckman will be joining forces with former Blue Streak runner Keith Thomas, as well as current rival Carlos Orellana, a distance runner from Spotswood High School. Despite massive potential for his collegiate career, Heckman still doesn’t take himself too seriously. “Yesterday I was freaking out my mom because I ate eight tacos and then ran at a meet,” Heckman said. n

Knight accepts scholarship to Ferrum Kevin Franco sports reporter

yle Knight a graduating senior at Harrisonburg High School has played football since before he can remember, and he will continue to develop memories at Ferrum University. Knight was recently offered a scholarship to play football at Ferrum. Ferrum has had a football program since the early 1900’s. Knight excelled playing linebacker at HHS and Ferrum felt his skills would be best put to use at safety. While Knight is a bit undersized at linebacker he has the prototypical size for a collegiate safety. “They recruited me because they thought I had good speed and size to play safety at the college level.” Knight said. Ferrum provides Knight with a opportunity that fills the mind of every young athlete. The chance to become a professional athlete. Knight admits the chance of that is very low and will require a lot of hard work, natural skill, and luck. If he manages to accomplish this task, then he will succeed in what occupies the cranium of

young athletes through the sports world. “I’d love to go pro, but I understand that the chances of that are very low. So, I’m going to take my schooling seriously and have something to fall back on,” Knight said. Ferrum finished last year at an upbeat 7-3 record; Knight hopes to help improve on that record. “They had a pretty good record last year, but we can definitely do better. I hope that I can contribute to a couple of wins next year.” To accomplish this goal, Knight is intending to work extremely hard and devote his college life to football. Ferrum head coach Dave Harper is described as a serious man who expects his players to have the drive and determination to succeed like he does. “Coach Harper isn’t really the joking type, he expects you to try your hardest and then some at everything you do. I really want to work as hard as I can so coach doesn’t regret bringing me into the program.” n

he James Madison University Dukes received a signed letter of intent from Harrisonburg senior standout, Salim Charles. Charles, who is a lean 6’7” 210 lbs., played wide receiver in high school but will undergo the transition to tight end in college. Charles will need to put on weight in the worldclass Plecker Center, which doubles as the Dukes’ locker room, if he hopes to see the field. Charles has ideal height for a tight end but adding weight remains a burning issue. NCAA rules prohibit Charles from lifting with the team until after graduation. “I’ve been told I have to add weight so I’ve been lifting every day at a friend’s house,” Charles said. Charles has long arms which will aid him as a blocker. JMU has been a run-oriented offense ever since offensive coordinator Jeff Durden arrived. Durden’s inaugural year as play-caller was the year the Dukes won the National Championship. Charles will have to rediscover his blocking skills because the Streaks ran a spread offense his senior year where Charles was split-out wide. “I didn’t have to block that much this year, but when we had Michael [Holmes] I blocked on every play,” Charles said. Charles is intrigued by the atmosphere James Madison University has to offer. “I had an [scholarship] offer from Liberty but the school and campus didn’t suit my appetite. I felt much more comfortable at JMU because the stadium is awesome, there is more of a social scene, and I am closer to my family,” Charles said. The Dukes return senior tight end Brian Barlow, a former Sherando product. James Madison has no clear-cut second stringer and lack depth at the position, but Charles will most likely take a redshirt year. “Weight is an issue which the coaches have repeatedly expressed. I need to put on bulk and muscle mass if I want to play. It might take me awhile to gain significant weight but I know I have to do it so that I can achieve my dream of playing college football,” Charles said. n

Cockerham competes for BC baseball Max Johnson

ne of our seniors who will be playing a sport at the next level is Brady Cockerham. Cockerham will be taking his 80 mph fastball a few miles down the road to Bridgewater College. Cockerham has been on the varsity baseball team since he was a sophomore and is now a senior captain, and also the Streaks ace. Cockerham clocks in at about 6’1”, 160 lbs. and prefers to freeze batters with his vicious 2-seam fastball. Brady was discovered at a showcase game, played at Bridgewater over the past summer. “I got to throw a couple innings at the Bridgewater High School Showcase and after, coach Kendal contacted me and told me he was interested,” said Cockerham. Cockerham is finishing his senior year strong, most notably throwing a complete game to knock off the (then) number one Broadway Gobblers. And as soon as the season is over, Coach Kendal and Bridgewater’s new strength and conditioning coach will be sending him to a strength and conditioning camp to prepare for next year. Cockerham is planning on being in the relief rotation for his freshman year, but says that by the time he is a senior he will officially be part of the Bridgewater Eagles starting rotation. “I am really excited to get to play baseball at a higher level. I’m looking forward to next season” said Cockerham. Also, Cockerham will get to throw with former HHS pitcher, Kevin Chandler, who he thinks he will learn a lot from. n
