I, Troupe Armentrout, leave my outstanding legacy to the tenacious Victoria Armentrout, otherwise known as Torsepower. I, Sukriti Adhikari, with a carefree mind and an insomniac body, do hereby bequeath the following items: To Binita Pokhrel, I leave you the title of being the only Nepali in the entire school. NA-MAS-TE! I leave you all the conversations and the rant sessions in the library, eating your food when I was just too lazy to get something and most of all being the sisters from another mother. I also leave you all the movie marathon and yelling at the characters every time something didn’t go like we wanted to. Lastly, I leave you all the best wishes and all the upcoming celebrations. To Julexus Cappell, DOWN WITH THE BROWN, GURL!! JK.. But not really. I also leave you with randomly rapping to Birthday Song by 2 Chainz or Started From the Bottom by Drake. I also leave you all the SIPA memories and that duck restaurant. But lastly I want to leave with a reminder that ‘You is kind, you is smart and you is important’, so pursue that journalism, graduate early, travel the world and love life more than you already do. To Luke Gibson, my favorite co-editor, I leave you to be the scary editor so that everyone turns in story on time. I also leave you a box of earl grey and herbal tea so that you won’t freak out much during the deadlines. To Anthony DingDongDuong, I leave you to deal with the sports photographers next year. I also leave you to be in time and know where you are supposed to meet up and charge your phone on time.I also leave you all the asian jokes and the pho, we never had. Thanks man, but not really. To Austin Coffey, I leave you all the awkward conversations that we have had every time you picked me up for distribution. But honestly, I will be waiting the day till you can be a future duke. To Celia Ehrenpreis, I leave you all the weird faces and all the time that you have helped me with the page and my articles! To Nishat Jamil, I leave you your poll days. To the upcoming photographers for Newsstreak, I leave you to stand in the sidelines and try to capture the moments. I also hope you try to find more stories than just take a picture. Finally, I also leave you to deal and edit the 500-1000 pictures that you will take during a football game or any game. To the upcoming staff of Newsstreak, I leave you Kibler’s sarcastic comments, the friends that you will make, the stress that you will come to get over in a month and overall the support and the building block that is Newsstreak. So yeah, basically everything. Except my room, that stays mine. To Izzy, I leave my legacy. May future underclassmen forever want to be you. I leave dapping me up son, car rides to the farm while jamming to the Biebs, you having a love/hate relationship with Water by Brad Paisley, and doing the macarena to Sammy Adams, and other various shenanigannery. I also leave sitting in your closet for hours and contemplating life, maxing out my credit cards (aka Gold and Platinum), your transformation to being able to say the word “sex” by the end of the cross country season, and skipping school on the last day before Christmas break to take your change to the Coinstar in Food Lion. And last but not least, I leave you Graham, as promised. If you do not live for this will, I’ll punch you in the you know where. To Breanna, I leave hating Cam

To Larkin and Celia, I leave the neighborhood! I’ll only be at JMU, but make sure you hold down the fort while I’m gone. To Josh, I leave the lunchroom, since you’ll be the only one there next year. senior year. To all those teachers that had me in the past years, I leave you my slacking days, and those days where I would doze off somewhere else instead of paying attention.. especially to my math teachers; you all know what I mean. Thank you. I, Zaid Sabah, would like to leave some advice. For all the freshman coming in please enjoy high school and make the most out of it, time in high school will fly by and you won’t realize it. For other students I would like to say, high school may seem rough sometimes and you might get a feeling that tells you to quit, but fight through and you will be successful. I’ve been in the U.S. for three years, spent them all in HHS, made all kinds of new friends and met amazing people. Basically, best time of my life. I, Ali Shah, being of a goddess body,do hereby bequeath the following items: to Blake Long, I leave. I, Addison Shepard, being of reminiscent mind and anxious body, do hereby bequeath the following items: To Shannon, I leave Mr. Rats.To Kendall, I leave the infamous black tip and all of the knights who say “Ni”. Also, I leave you with the memories of not leaving school during chemistry and not going to Mr. J’s for food when you first got your license. To Bianca, I leave all of the constricting, spontaneous hugs that you have given me in the past four years of high school. Just kidding, I’m keeping all of those. You’ll always be my ferret. To Julexus, I leave our gang of gatos and our car rides around town at the most random times. Most importantly, I leave you with the knowledge and faith that you have what it takes to be successful in this world. I know that you have the heart and the determination to accomplish your goals and I want you to know that you have my support. You will do great things with your life. Thank you for being one of my best friends. I, Maggie Siciliano, being of sound mind and a dancer’s body, do bequeath the following items: To Blake Long, I leave my life story, my best friends, every vent session, every good dance party, snow days snowed in at the Siciliano’s house, a million selfies, Cookout runs, my love of Zeus, and finally being even. To Isabelle Burden, I leave every burst of laughter my junior year, her basement, Surfer Boy, Sparkles, talks for hours locked in her room, Jimmy John’s runs, “Let Me Take You Out,” Hoodrat and Little Miss Sunshine, dance parties in the front seat of my car (and getting caught), musical, a plain bagel at J’s toasted with cream cheese, Coca Cola, and ending every question in a British accent. To Jackson Taylor, I leave the Landcruiser (you’ll need a car for trips #clumsy), rides to school every morning, the best stories in existence, every awkward interaction, a social life, and no longer being the new kid. To Mary-Hallet Culbreth, I leave being weird, heart-to-hearts in the middle of musical dance rehearsals, going on a date on the top of the John Hancock Building, looking like we’re related, dancing like a fool, and never asking how I am, but how he is. To Abe Nouri, I leave the name Trudy, adventures in the Landcruiser, being involved in the same Spring Arts’ shows every year, and what society says. To Garrett Thompson, I leave musical theatre class, Glee, and a lead in the 2014 HHS musical. To Phoebe Copeland,

SENIOR ISSUE - B7
Zimmermann will continue track career at Bridgewater Kendall Bailey Sports editor Senior athlete Jonas Zimmermann has excelled at running since his freshman year. He is part of the cross country and has ranked high in its 5k races at almost every meet. For the indoor and outdoor track teams, he participates in the mile, two mile, and 800 races. “Long distance is my speciality because I get better the longer I run. I don’t have much speed, but I can keep a quick pace for a longer period of time,” Zimmerman said. Throughout high school and his multiple seasons, Zimmermann has had a set schedule for training to maintain his best performance. He runs all year long, and only takes breaks during the one week period between sport seasons to let his legs relax. Since running puts a lot of stress on the body’s joints, Zimmermann does cross training at least once a week. Biking helps to relieve some of the stress that running causes, but still allows him to train. Zimmerman plans to attend Bridgewater College as a member of their track and cross coun-
try teams. The school is in Division III and is ranked high in the ODAC conference. Last year, the Bridgewater track team placed a close second to Liberty University in the finals. “Next year I’ll definitely be challenged. There will be runners who are a lot faster than me. I’ll have to work harder to be as competitive as everybody else,” Zimmermann said. Early in the school year, the head coach of Bridgewater’s track team e-mailed Zimmermann and expressed interest in his skills. With Zimmermann’s impressive records and history, he automatically made the team. He was invited to the campus to meet his future teammates and automatically felt at home. “Being with the team will give me an immediate group of friends in college. [The team members] are always hanging out, and they’re really accepting of any newcomers,” Zimmermann said. At Bridgewater, Zimmermann is going to run either the 5k or 10k distance at his meets for the track team and participate in the usual 8k run for their cross country team. He plans to major in Physical Training so he can continue to participate in the sports world after college.
Morris sprints to the college level Kendall Bailey Sports editor Varsity track athlete Akia Morris has been blowing people away since her freshman year. She acts as the not-so-secret weapon for the high school in every meet. Throughout high school, Morris ran the 100m, 200m,4x1, 4x2, and her speciality, the 55m dash. She holds the school record in all five of these events, and broke the all-city/county records on May 1 at a regional meet at Spotswood when she ran the 100m in 12.1, and the 200m in 25.3. She has gone to states several years in a row and continues to conquer her competition. After countless impressive performances, Morris was bombarded with letters from almost every school in Virginia. She narrowed her choices down to Concord University, University of Richmond, and University of Kentucky, and officially chose to become a member of the Concord
track team. Her new team is ranked high in Division II, and is entering a rebuilding phase that they hope will develop an imposing threat for their competition. Morris is anticipating the transition from high school to college athletics. “I’m excited to travel around the world and see the best of the best from high school going into college,” Morris said. Morris constantly trains to make sure that she stays in shape and maintains her potential. Her everyday routine consists of core workouts, weight lifting, and time trials. “I practice hard and physically know that I’m going to be okay. I try my best; that’s all I can do,” Morris said. Even though Morris is going to miss winning district every year with her high school track team, she is looking forward to participating in the rebuilding process of Concord’s track team and succeeding at the college level.
Strother joins Averett soccer Kerri Hofacker Sports editor As senior athletes begin to say goodbye to the sports that they have been playing for the last four years, there are a select few who are able to continue playing after high school. Ebonee Strother has committed to play soccer at Averett University in Danville, VA next year. Strother has been a four-year starter for the high school team and will continue to play forward at Averett next year. “I picked [Averett] because they have a really good athletic training program and that’s what I’m looking to study,” Strother said. Strother has taken various visits down to the campus and on one occasion even got to meet the team. The team is mostly international, with many of the players
coming from Sweden, Finland, and Germany. She believes that she will fit in well with the girls. The one negative to going away for school is that Strother will miss her family and friends. “I’m going to miss Harrisonburg because that’s where my family is, but I’m ready to experience something new,” Strother said. Although Strother is not sure if she is going to be a starter yet or not, she is very excited about going to college and taking her game to the next level. Strother will finish out her senior year with a very impressive resume that includes three years as a member of the All-District team, two years All-Region, and one year Honorable Mention AllState. She hopes to keep her level of intensity the same in college, if not increase it.

Kendall Bailey Sports editor After moving from Missouri his sophomore year, Hayden Rutherford was quickly recognized for his athletic skills. He started as safety for the varsity football team, and was an essential tool for each game. Even though he has lived in Missouri and D.C., Rutherford wanted to return to his home state of Colorado for college. Earlier in the year, he attended
a football camp at the Colorado School of Mines, and the coach immediately expressed interest in his skills. Colorado School of Mines is a Division II school and is considered to have one of the best football teams in their conference. They hold several records, and Rutherford hopes to contribute to their future success. “I’m looking forward to meeting the team and seeing what it’s like to play at the college level,” Rutherford said. Rutherford is planning to red-
shirt his freshman academic year, and then begin playing on the field his sophomore year as an outside linebacker. To stay at his best, Rutherford exercises every day by lifting weights and running. He also plays basketball and flag football outside of school to maintain his stamina and fast pace. Rutherford plans to major in petroleum engineering along with his football career. “I’m glad I can continue to play. Football has always been really fun for me,” Rutehrford said.
SENIOR STATS
What’s your advice for incoming freshmen? “Be kind to everyone. The people who you think deserve it the least, I promise, need it the most.” -Alex Hunter-Nickels
“Work hard but not TOO hard... figure out how much work you need to do to learn the material and do it, but don't kill yourself by doing too much. Similarly, learn to do triage.” -Ellie Pruett-Fiederlein
“Don’t put all of your work off till the last minute, actually get it done, even if you don’t want to because it will suck falling behind and making everything up.” -Sydney Wells
“Stay focused and be a leader, not a follower. Watch who you call your friends. Do something because you want to not because people tell you to. Don’t think twice about doing the right thing.” -Keyana Whitley
“I’m planning going to Blue Ridge Community College and ROTC program at JMU. I want to become a mechanical engineer in the U.S. Marines in the future. I also want to marry my girlfriend, Maggie Zheng.” -Trung Nguyen
“After I graduate, I plan on attending JMU and possibly transferring to another college, depending on my decided major. Then, I will marry Mila Kunis. No ifs, ands, or buts.” -Camden Hill

Music chronicles Hairston’s high school career
Paul Hairston Staff Videographer
Music throughout my high school career has seemed to have, in my perspective, a more emphatic cultural change than I can remember in any other of my grade or middle school years. With the increasingly omniscient nature of the internet, obscure artists are wildly more prevalent, along with the appearance and cultural permanence of one hit wonders. Recently this year we’ve come to see The Harlem Shake take an international identity as a con-
tinually parodied and satirized dance in a variety of circumstances, each with a different element of goofiness or creativity than the last. Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” was another that garnered internet fame long into my high school career, along with Gangnam Style’s storied appearance when everyone and their mother took to heart their duty to create and distribute online their truly hilarious and uniquely different parody of PSY’s original music video. And while Internet has accumulated an emphasis on my cultural identity
over my high school career in terms of music, standard album releases highlight major elements and chronicle my progression both through puberty and young adulthood. Some of my favorite bands include Fun, their original album, The Black Keys, Cake, Cage the Elephant, The White Stripes, The Fratellis, Jet and mostly recently RJD2 and Wolfmother. All of these bands possess life spans that have lasted since the inception of my highest level of public schooling. Cake pushed me through my freshman year, and with their hybrid rapped and
sung melodies, they gave me a comedic and satiric perspective on the stress of my first year in high school, and the beginning and end of many month and week long “relationships” defining the infancy of my hopeless romanticism. The Arctic Monkeys turned me on to British culture and the fruits of their media abroad my sophomore year. I discovered shows that had profound effects on my cinematic tastes like Misfits, Sherlock and Dr. Who. When inspiration peaked, the Monkeys were a rapid fire and upbeat light through the writing of my “first” film,
and the end to a long term relationship that provoked its creation. My junior year I found solace in the Black Keys during my most stressful and college pertinent time in high school as I prepped for a deluge of standardized tests, and even provided a new album that year and my first concert I ever attended. That summer, as I grew closer to my girlfriend of now almost a year and a half, and through the production of countless films, short stories and small businesses, Fun proved to be an indelibly memorable sound track. Finally, Cake made a
monumental comeback for the duration of my senior year of high school, and harmonized quite perfectly with what I can confidently call my best year of high school, providing a beginning and end score to my narrative in Harrisonburg High School. While my tastes in music are specific to who I am as a person, I feel every senior can understand how their past and present favorite bands chronicle their high school career and sing an individual tune for each stage through this four year adolescent culmination called high school.
