ne of print’s best business opportunities today is with digital printing enhancements that go beyond traditional CMYK, such as coatings, metallics, white inks, spot colours and gamut extenders. Last three to four years have seen many developments in digital presses being launched with flourescent and metallic capabilities. It only goes to show that digital printing is no longer a business of short-run printing or print-on-demand. It is about making a print look attractive and eye-catching. Value addition has moved from simple personalisation to print enhancement. Metallics are a particularly interesting digital print enhancement opportunity because recent developments have expanded the range of cost, quality, turnaround and variable printing options print providers can offer. There are others, such as fluorescent inks and neon colours which allow print service providers to produce eye-catching results that inspire highly engaging and effective campaigns. It expands the colour gamut, enhances images and can be used as a solid or highlight or graphic colour. Even white as a fifth colour option is proving to be a selling point particulary for labels and packaging segment. All in all, digital printing is looking into a bright future. Veerendra Malik

Xerox pulls out of merger deal with Fujifilm Xerox Corp has pulled out of a planned $6.1 billion deal with Fujifilm Holdings Corp in a settlement with activist investors Carl Icahn and Darwin Deason saying it undervalued the U.S. company. The two companies agreed in January to a complex deal that would merge Xerox into their Asia joint venture Fuji Xerox. Xerox CEO Jeff Jacobson and six members of its board of directors have resigned after reaching an agreement with dissident shareholders Carl Icahn and Darwin Deason who opposed the deal from the start. John Visentin takes over as CEO
with five new members on the board. The new board will discuss alternatives to the proposed merger and evaluate strategies to maximize shareholder value – including terminating or restructuring of Xerox’s relationship with Fujifilm and the proposed transaction. The initial proposal would have given Fujifilm 51% control over the company. According to Fujifilm Holdings Corp, the company is planning to sue Xerox Corp soon deeming that the U.S. photocopier company has no legal right to unilaterally scrap their merger. Fujifilm plans to file a lawsuit as soon as possible, President Kenji Sukeno said in his first public comments days after the American office products company called off the deal in a settlement with activist shareholders Carl Icahn and Darwin Deason. Still, Fujifilm would also consider any new offer from Xerox, Sukeno said.
Fedrigoni reopens Pioraco mill After the earthquake of 26 October 2016, the team spirit of the Fedrigoni people and of an entire country allowed the reconstruction of a historical and central plant for the community of Pioraco. After a construction and structural reconstruction model to resurrect from the earthquake of October 2016, completed last September, the Pioraco plant of the Fedrigoni Group has resumed normal production in these days, restarting the main two machines, which is completely renovated in its strategic heart. The best of Italian and European mechanics has contributed to the restoration
and technological renewal of the machine which, following the interventions, at the same time reaches a further improved production quality of special papers (including some security papers such as passport papers, but also the cards for drawing, art, high-end packaging) and an increase in production capacity . Other works are underway for the repair of some parts of the hydroelectric power plant: the pride of the plant is in fact the production capacity totally fueled by clean and renewable energy, self-produced. The Pioraco factory employs 140 people. Paper production has for centuries been the
“The contract that ties the two companies together is still valid,” Sukeno said at a briefing in Tokyo to announce the company’s financial results. “We will push for the legality of it. There was a legal contract that everyone agreed on, and after that a few shareholders wanted to put a stop to it.” Sukeno said he wants to explain to Xerox shareholders that the merger with Fujifilm is the only option for the American company to grow and have a future. A combined entity would be more efficient, he said. Fujifilm owns a 75 percent stake in an office equipment joint venture that it operates in Asia with Xerox. As part of a deal proposed in January, Xerox was to have first merged with the joint venture, and then the Tokyo-based company would take over slightly more than 50 percent of the combined entity. Former print finisher gets Amazon Best Seller Status Following the successful launch of his new book, Against the grain, How I went from factory floor to my own multimillion pound company, (and you could too), Graham Harris, Tech-ni-Fold Managing Director announces his delight after becoming an Amazon Best seller. The accolade came about following a book promotion Harris ran throughout the print industry, resulting in hundreds of sales, all of which elevated Harris's book from almost obscurity. Harris explained, "It's difficult for new authors to get noticed in an overcrowded and competitive market, no matter what potential their book may offer, and for me it was no different. I decided to promote my book to our own customers and industry contacts we know, and they supported me without hesitation, not only that, the feedback has been excellent - most loved reading my story of how I brought my own invention (the TriCreaser) to market. Our loyal customers and the print industry as a whole have given me a platform to go outside of print, into areas I can help inspire other people too, and I am indebted to them." Harris added that he wants to give something back and would like to dedicate some of his time to helping would-be inventors, business people and entrepreneurs who might need some motivation, and tips on how to emulate his own success. There have been some interest from Universities who seek speakers and study materials for their libraries, Harris concluded, "It would be pretty cool to mentor students and in some small way try and influence how they might think about the fields of invention and innovation."

Kodak Launches the NEXFINITY Digital Press Kodak has launched The NEXFINITY Press, which builds on the success of the award-winning KODAK NEXPRESS Platform. The entire NEXFINITY platform is designed to make it easy for printers to operate in a much more dynamic print marketplace. It’s built with Dynamic Imaging Technology, a patented Kodak innovation for digital printing. The technology works by applying algorithmic adjustments to specific areas of an image, which optimizes image quality and consistency based on the image content in each area. The result, for example, produces crisp text, hard lines, soft skin tones, and beautiful skies on the same page, whether it’s for one print or millions. Featuring a new high resolution and multi-bit LED writing system, the press produces the broadest range of applications, including direct mail, commercial print, publishing, and packaging. Seamless integration into workflow and finishing solutions means the press is optimized for a printer’s production workflow. “With NEXFINITY Press, printers get a robust digital printing platform that delivers offset quality while driving down costs and equipping them with the flexibility and speed to handle an expansive range of applications for their customers, whether it’s an order for a few hundred or millions of impressions,” said Chris Balls, General Manager, Equipment and VP, Print Systems Division of Kodak. Kodak’s NEXFINITY Press delivers the industry’s highest information density at more than 1.8 billion pieces of image information per square inch and it ensures smooth flat fields and excellent image detail in the
printed product. For example, the system can reproduce fine details on the fly, like highlight areas and consistency in mid-tones by adjusting the exposure levels for incredibly high levels of print quality. The LED writing system provides 256 levels of exposure on the imaging cylinder, compared to laser systems that only are on or off, which means it provides excellent, consistent quality, utilizing closed-loop
process controls that maximize uptime and lower running costs. NEXFINITY Press also delivers speed and flexibility, with an increased range of 83 to 152 ppm, expanded sheet lengths up to 48 inches and capable of handling stocks up to 24pt. When all of this is combined with the machine’s color sequence flexibility that allows for dry inks to
be printed in alternative orders or combinations required by specific print jobs, the creative possibilities to help printers grow their business are extensive. All NEXFINITY Presses are powered by the new KODAK NEXFINITY Front End. It features the flexibility to operate as a complete standalone prepress toolset, with imposing, trapping,
color management, job specification and job management and reporting capabilities. The Front End is also equipped with an automated workflow using JDF and JMF which are compatible with a variety of workflow solutions, including Kodak’s industryleading PRINERGY Workflow.

addressable market in terms of budget as well as unique application or workflow needs. The base roll-to-roll configuration is ideal for those just entering the production digital space. As their digital business expands, the modularity of the platform enables the shift to inline finishing to better utilize the high speed platform. Expanded gamut now offered in a high-chroma inkset (CMYK + OVG) complements an existing richly pigmented white ink formulation, which delivers output comparable to rotary screen. Mark Andy product development reports the ink provides 3 times the opacity of flexo white and more than double that of conventional EP
white, measured in excess of 80%. Digital white can be run without trade-off in speed at the platform’s standard of 240 fpm. The most notable alteration to the Digital Series HD press comes in the form of the digital module. Once a flat table section, the new platform now showcases an arched IDS. The arch design accepts unsupported films and improves operator ergonomics, enabling quick and clean ink changeover. New print head technology housed in the module also matches the industry’s quality standard of 1200 dpi. Digital Series HD also comes with further configurability in the way of 3 head cleaning optionsmanual, automatic, and semiautomatic. This variety translates to less downtime, improved head health and reduced costs for converters. Additionally, the platform now offers a more advantaged VDP tool in response to market demand for sophisticated personalization.

At Dscoop Asia-Pacific 2018, HP Inc. unveiled the, the first hybrid solution for rigid and flexible sign and display printing in one device. The printer is the first in the R-series, which incorporates HP’s new Rigid Technology. “After 10 years of Latex, we are moving into rigid and flexible latex printing, all in one unit,” said Michael Boyle in a media briefing. “It offers a consistency in quality between the two media. Brand owners are excited because they can now give the same quality of print on both rigid and flexible media.” The printer is aimed at the rigid target market, especially in sign and display, decoration, internal space events and exhibitions, and outdoor signage. According to Boyle, the HP Scitex range will still be re-
tained, as it offers a much faster turn around than the new Rseries. Compared to the HP Scitex, the R-series will be a slower, but more premium quality solution. The printer is able to print 2.5 metres in width and up to 5 cm of thickness in media. It utilises a new ink set – the HP Latex White Ink. The ink touted as a true white that is able to deliver the glossiest white on both transparent and coloured media. The white ink is resistant to yellowing, staying true to the white for a long period of time, even under exposure to sunlight.

The Konica Minolta KM-1 is a sheetfed duplex B2-format digital inkjet press, using UVcured inks and has been developed as a joint venture with Komori. Using Konica Minolta’s proprietary state-of-the-art ink and head technology, the KM1 was designed to help printers expand their services to include the benefits of inkjet productivity and efficiency. It is especially suitable for variable data print runs, extremely tight deadlines and easy integration to offset and digital environments, the press can handle up to 3,000 sheets per hour. Konica Minolta has combined the speed and flexibility of offset presses with the digital benefits of variable data printing and

zero make ready—plus the extraordinary advantages of larger 23”x29.5” sheet size, a wider range of paper thickness, and the flexibility to print on coated or uncoated stock, art papers, textured stock and more, all without any pre-coat or special papers. Unique to the AccurioJet KM-1 is the ability to print 6 fullbleed letter size sheets on one
page – that’s 18,000 letter-size color pages per hour. The machine can handle a widest range of substrates and that that too from .06 to .6mm thickness. Thus, it can be used for packaging printing. At the same time, the machine’s duplex printing capability is ideal commercial prints. The most unusual aspect is the UV-cured ink. The UV ink
Product Portfolio that the KM-1 utilises is not the same UV ink printers have traditionally experienced. This was specially developed for use with AccurioJet KM-1. Ink is cured instantaneously by UV light using long-life ozone-free LEDs. The LED curing lamps are compact and cool, though a simple fan extractor and duct is required, largely because of the heated inks. Light-cured UV ink avoids paper problems caused by heat drying, and provides high accuracy of front-to-back registration. UV-cured inks and cool LED lamps enable the press to handle a wide range of substrates including standard offset stocks or synthetics, with no need for special pre-coatings. It can also handle thicker cartonboard stocks up to 0.6mm as well as heavily textured or embossed papers. Other important advantages of the revolutionary UV ink include: Environment-friendly operations coupled with Colour Capacity, Natural Gloss, and Colour consist-
ency and scratch resistance print outputs. New 600dpi printheads with piezo shear technology are fitted in pairs to give 1,200dpi. There are eight pairs per full-width print bar and one print bar per colour. Initially, the presses will be wide-gamut CMYK, with five and six colour options in future.
Inline sensor detects nozzle misfire or streaks and automatically correct the image to ensure high and stable image quality. The head carriage retracts sideways for maintenance and heads can be replaced by the operator. Having the same feeding system as an offset press, ensures reliable paper feeding. The paper feed capacity is up to height of 900mm. Grip to grip technology ensure highly-accurate paper transportation.
Control is largely through Konica Minolta’s digital frontend, which it calls the Inkjet Manager. There will be two performance options, with the more expensive Pro being for full-speed variable data, and the Light type being for less demanding content. Konica Minolta has added an inline finishing option to its AccurioJet KM-1 B2 inkjet press as part of a raft of new technology partnerships which include a tie-up with UK finishing kit manufacturer Rollem for a fully-automated inline finishing setup for the KM-1. Rollem has developed a special bridge that is likely to give users a number of workflow options for inline or near-line finishing. The main target markets are packaging, books and commercial print. The larger sheet sizes for 3-panel and 4-panel brochures, pocket folders, posters, point-of-purchase graphics, dust jackets, wraparound book covers, and many more. Enfocus releases Pitstop 2018 Enfocus has launched the latest version of its PitStop software. PitStop Pro 2018, which is now commercially available as an Adobe Acrobat plugin, has been created to save users time and provides additional advanced editing functionality for images, graphics, text and shadings, the Belgian developer said. PitStop Server 2018 has also been released. The hot-folder based server product automatically checks and fixes PDF files, without the need for human intervention. New features include Action List Visualizer, which Enfocus said lets users easily see what an Action List is doing as it is being created, enabling them to swiftly identify problems within an Action List. In visualizer mode, users can edit as they go, resolving problems on the spot. The new Hard Crop Line Art tool cleans up complex files to improve rendering and output performance. Available in both PitStop Pro and PitStop Server,
the feature crops unnecessary clipped content within the PDF file to reduce the complexity of files whilst still preserving its visual appearance. Also new is the ability to generate barcodes manually or automatically in a PDF file without the need for any thirdparty applications. PitStop Pro and PitStop Server users can choose from over 100 types of barcodes and generate 1D, 2D, international postal barcodes and GS1 compliant barcodes. Users of PitStop Pro can also now opt in to have their own online dashboard, which visually shows their use of
PitStop features and provides information on the type of PDF files they are receiving. Enfocus said the main benefit of this new feature is giving users more insight into the way they use PitStop and the problems encountered. For example, they can see how many pages are processed each day and identify the type and quantity of errors in each job. Other key new features include better integration with Enfocus’ new Switch 2018 workflow, improved line art editing tools, and a new Pantone functionality that enables spot colours to be checked and corrected against the correct Pantone colours and colour breakdowns in PitStop.
Mimaki introduces smaller print-and-cut machines Mimaki has expanded its UCJV range of LED-UV print-and-cut machines to add three new, smaller versions that the manufacturer hopes will extend the market reach of the technology. The printers in the series are all said to feature low running costs and instantly dry ink,
which allows printing to a wide range of materials, including PET film, fabric and heat-sensitive media. All three new models will feature Greenguard Gold certified LUS-170 inks – including an opaque white ink, new ID Cut function for automatic cutting of consecutive jobs via barcode, and four-layer day/night printing, which Mimaki said enables designers to build layered graphics for backlit applications. Mimaki claims that because it’s a UV technology, the printers have all the eco-benefits of that and in theory, being UV – will
print to almost anything. The white ink is another advantage which is very difficult to print onto dark materials with a typical rollto-roll printer, hence it opens up lots of possibilities. The integrated cutting functionality on the machines enables users to create applications including labels, decals, window clings, floor graphics, POP displays, vehicle markings, packaging and prototypes in a single unit. The official launch of the new models will be at Fespa in Berlin. Commercial availability of the new models is expected around autumn 2018.

Feature Domino Fluorescent Security Ink Domino Digital Printing Solutions launched the fluorescent ink UV80CL for its K600i inkjet printer module. Domino’s UV80CL ink prints clear, but fluoresces green, under an ultraviolet UV-A 365nm blacklight, all of which may be used in security, authentication and anti-counterfeit applications. It can be used to print 2D codes, barcodes, alpha-numeric codes, images, graphics and for personalised data printing. It is unique in that it is fluorescent green instead of the traditional security ink blue, and that it has moderate lightfastness relative to inks in the same category. The combination of printing variable data with green fluorescence provides a high complexity rating which would be extremely difficult to replicate. Compatible with standard medias, including coated and uncoated paper, polyethylene and polypropylene, the ink is intended for adding security marks and features to currency, stamps, passports and certificates to prevent forgery or counterfeiting, along with the cosmetics and pharmaceutical markets.

HP Indigo’s Fluorescent and Special color Electroinks
HP introduced a silver ink for its Indigo presses in 2017, initially for label printing, but with the promise that the long awaited metallic ink will also be available on its cutsheet machines. The company had previously introduced a metallic silver effect ink, but this was withdrawn as it was too grey and not silver enough. The new ink was closer to PMS 877 and smoother than the earlier metallic. Later HP expanded its neon range to green and blue. Earlier this year HP launched the new HP Indigo color gamut technology – ColorUp! – and new Vivid Pink and Green, Fluorescent Yellow, Green, and Orange ElectroInks. HP Indigo ElectroInk Fluorescent Green, Yellow and Orange are in addition to the previously available Fluorescent Pink. The inks are already in use by PSPs to produce commercial applications. I.materialise Introduces Multicolor+ Printing Material iMaterialise has introduced Multicolor+, its new and improved, full-color 3D printing material. The full-color, UVcurable, 3D inkjet printing creates smooth surfaces with vibrant colors that enhance the value of a finished object. The “+” stands for brighter colors. Multicolor+ will make colorful 3D prints more vivid and intense. Stronger material
using plastic instead of plaster is sturdier than before. The building layers of 3D prints are less visible with Multicolor+. 3D prints made using Multicolor+ technology have an improved surface quality, offering less visible layers and an altogether smoother surface. You can also expect detailed designs to come out with much higher precision, which allows for a rich color reproduction, and it has a high water resistance as well. Multicolor+ also makes it possible to design thinner walls for intricate designs. The minimum wall thickness is 1 mm, but i.materialise suggests a thickness of at least 1.5 mm for larger sections. It’s also possible to design and 3D print interlocking parts with Multicolor+, though it’s necessary to remember that important spacing between the surfaces, as this will determine how bendable your design is.
The Box: The Biggest 3D Printer A Swedish team of students Jacob Lundin and Cim Bergdahl with support from the Herber Engineering Facility have launched ‘The Box’ 3D printer, one of the biggest 3D printers in the world. The size of this printer is 1500x1100x1500mm and can print anything ranging from a golf ball to entire furniture. It can print around 6 kilos of plastics per hour.
