The art of enamelling was invented by oriental craftsmen nearly 4,000 years ago. With the development of watchmaking in the 17th century, Geneva became the center of Grand Feu miniature enamelling for watch decoration. Vacheron Constantin today perpetuates this refined ancestral craft. The enameller creates or faithfully reproduces designs or miniature patterns on the dial with the aid of a brush. Other techniques are also used: cloisonné enamelling, which involves using wire to mark the outline of a zone, and champlevé enamelling, in which the material is hollowed out at the locations where the enamel is to be received. This decorative craft requires very highly developed artistic and technical skills.

Acknowledged by the cognoscenti as the greatest watchmaker of all time, Breguet’s client list is the most impressive of any watchmaker in the history of watchmaking; it includes the likes of Queen Marie-Antoinette, Emperor Napoleon, Sir Winston Churchill, Ettore Bugatti, George Washington, Tsar Alexander the list is endless...

Vacheron Constantin is the world’s oldest watch manufacturer, uninterrupted since 1755. This patriarch of legendary watchmaking has been the benchmark of ‘haute horlogerie’ and the finest craftsmanship for generations. Their client list reads like the blue book of the greatest leaders of all time.

A. Lange & Söhne has been creating fine timepieces since 1845 and is the only non-Swiss watchmaker who commands a position at the pinnacle of watchmaking. The youngest of the “Big Four” has rightfully earned the reputation of “making the impossible, possible” among connoisseurs! A prodigious innovator, A. Lange & Söhne timepieces are highly sought-after by uncompromising aficionados. Every Lange watch is made to last a lifetime...

The Big Four are widely recognized as the greatest watchmakers of all time - often referred to as the ‘Four Pillars’ of fine watchmaking! In what is at once a tribute and a testimonial to their reputation, their unrivaled quality and their timeless value, virtually all the world records at auctions are held by the ‘Magnificent Four’ testifying that they are 'art', 'heirloom' and 'investment' all rolled in one. Not only are they easily portable and extremely 'liquid' investments but very discreetly 'under-the-radar' as well. Coins that TELL A STORY When I was a child in Ireland, there were coins in everyday circulation that were more than 100 years old. This made a big, but quiet impression on me. In how many interesting pockets and purses had those pennies spent time? Old coins made me curious. I started to look out for them and keep them. None of mine were of sufficient quality to have any commercial value. But I was happy to have them. Let’s move 5,000 miles westward and advance many years. I looked for coins and medals associated with exploration and life on St Maarten and the Caribbean, again inextricably intertwined with a burning interest in expanded local history. It seemed like the coins were proof of the things that went before. Spanish King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, married in 1469, expelled the Moors from Granada, formalized the Spanish Inquisition and discriminated against Jews and Muslims and all non-Christians. They also funded Christopher Columbus, and brought untold riches to Spain for the next few hundred years. In 1648 Dutch Commander Petrus Stuyvesant lost his leg on St Maarten trying to recapture the island from the Spanish. This did not prevent him from becoming director general of the New Netherlands (1647-1664) with headquarters in New Amsterdam (now NYC). The double tournois coin of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, 1625-47, reminds us that the Dutch House of Orange has roots in the peaceful country town of Orange, near Avignon in southeast France. Pieces of Eight— the silver coin of the pirates and the conquistadores—effectively became the first international currency, minted in the Spanish Empire including Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and Santo Domingo, from the late 15th to the early 19th century. The island of St Eustatius was, for a time, the largest trading center in the Caribbean. The Andrew Doria was the first ship of the independent US Navy to be saluted by a foreign power, the Dutch, in St Eustatius in 1776. British Admiral Lloyd Bridges Rodney, infamous in the Dutch Caribbean for demolishing St Eustatius under orders to punish the Dutch for helping the rebel cause in the American Revolution, a devil over here, a hero in England.

He welcomed Jews and they built up the sugar cane industry and this expertise traveled to the Caribbean Islands when the Portuguese took back this land and expelled the sugar experts. In St Barth, coins recall the hundred years of Swedish rule on that small island that was eventually returned to France. Haile Selassi, King of Kings, Lion of Judah, Emperor of Ethiopia (1930-1975) an Orthodox Ethiopian Christian all his life, became a deity to Rastafarians, becoming an quintessential part of modern West Indian culture. The Anguilla Liberty Dollar (11th July 1967) commemorates the beginning of the Anguilla Revolution. Unhappy with its subordinate position in the British Colony of St Kitts, Nevis & Anguilla, authorities in Anguilla expelled Kittitian officials and declared their independence from the other two islands.

All of these artifacts have significance and they stimulate curiosity and invite investigation and help us understand how we got here. But they are also great art and beautiful to behold and to touch, created themselves by great artists. We salute the men, women and events commemorated, but we also salute the humble engravers and metal workers who made these artifacts with love and care for us to enjoy, forever.
