Welcome to Acqualina

The more things change, the more they stay the same. That’s our enduring spirit at Acqualina Resort, where a host of new programs, amenities and services are set to make our beachfront haven even dreamier.

Once again, Acqualina was proudly ranked the #1 Best Hotel and #1 Best Resort in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. This year, as well, the resort has earned Five-Star Hotel and Five-Star Spa ratings from Forbes Travel Guide — for the 12th year in a row. Read about both along with our prestigious recognition from Green Key Global Certification, which celebrates properties that embed eco-consciousness and sustainability into every element of their operation. You’ll discover why these awards are so meaningful.

Oue new skin-care partner, the luxurious Italian brand Seed to Skin Tuscany is now available in all our guest rooms and suites. Indulgent and enticing, the small-scale Tuscan purveyor specializes in highly-organic, sustainably-sourced body-care products.

Acqualina is always looking for ways to improve the guest experience. In this issue we explore our newest and most eye-catching resort enhancements through the eyes of our long-time designer Isabel Tragash of Miami-based STA Architectural Group.

Acqualina Resort is a proud member of The Leading Hotels of the World, the global leader in independent, ultra-luxurious properties. And we are thrilled to spotlight its inimitable powerhouse, CEO Shannon Knapp, a 20-year hospitality veteran and a true industry visionary.

Once again, Acqualina was the place to experience the best of South Florida. From a tranquil Wellness Weekend and high-speed (and high-stakes) Formula One event to the exclusive PerUs Wine Tasting and an interior design and art showcase, we hosted an array of activations embodying our community spirit.

Finally, no element of Acqualina is more impactful or meaningful than our team members. In this issue, we introduce readers to four of our most dedicated and brightest.

Welcome to Acqualina Resort & Residences – where timeless elegance meets unparalleled service to create an unforgettable escape.

sustainability green is the new gold

Acqualina leads hotel industry with sustainability efforts

Gold may be the traditional color of luxury, but today five-star properties and their guests see the sparkle of green as the new color of luxury. With sustainability and community involvement as important as stellar guest service and exquisite amenities, Acqualina was recently recognized for its efforts in both receiving Green Key Global Certification, and being named one of the Leading Hotels of the World’s Sustainability Leaders.

Green Key Global is an international environmental certification body for the hospitality industry. To earn a key, Acqualina was assessed on environmental management, conservation, land use, indoor air quality, waste management, infrastructure and community outreach.

The Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) created its Sustainability Leader collection in late 2023 to spotlight hotels that preserve the environment and honor the values and culture of their destination. The collection is designed to allow travelers to make sustainability a part of their vacation.

Deborah Yager Fleming, CEO & Partner of Acqualina Resort.

We are immensely proud to receive the Green Key Global Certification and be recognized as a Sustainability Leader by LHW, We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and fostering a more eco-conscious future.

Sustainability at the Resort

For years Acqualina has made decisions about the food, amenities and products it uses with a focus on what’s best for the environment, its guests and the preservation of the planet for future generations.

“In the past few years, we’ve redoubled our efforts towards sustainable practices,” said Gershwin Narraidoo, director of learning and development at Acqualina. “The feedback from our guests regarding these sustainability initiatives has been exceedingly positive, underlining the value they place on our commitment to reducing environmental impact alongside offering luxurious experiences.”

The newest eco-friendly change at the hotel is introducing wooden room key cards. The cards are made from renewable resources and are biodegradable. They can be recycled, composted or even used as fuel.

Guests will find unobtrusive nods to sustainability throughout the property. At the four dining establishments, you’ll find restaurants that have committed to sourcing at least half the menus from local purveyors, which supports regional farmers and reduces the carbon footprint of bringing food from other locations. Diners will also enjoy premium filtered water, biodegradable drinking straws and environmentally friendly takeout options for containers, cutlery, cups and bags.

In their rooms, guests will find eco-friendly water bottles, reusable bottles for bathroom amenities and an iPad that offers a digital array of newspapers, magazines, and ebooks. Travelers can opt to participate in sustainability efforts by forgoing daily changing of linens and towels.

To get around the Miami area, Acqualina offers a variety of EV car rental options on-site and has two charging stations on property.

Acqualina in the Community

For Acqualina, being a strong member of the Miami community is part of its DNA. Since 1995 the resort has been heavily involved in supporting The I Have a Dream Foundation created by Eugene Lang in New York City. In fact, Acqualina owners Stephanie and Jules Trump started the Miami chapter. The nonprofit helps children from underprivileged backgrounds with the skills, knowledge, mindset and resources to pursue higher education. An entire class of Dreamers is adopted in elementary school and nurtured and guided through high school.

“Our second class of Dreamers graduated in 2020. Out of 107 Dreamers, 96 graduated on time and five graduated in 2021. As a result, 86 Dreamers are now enrolled in post-secondary education,” said Stephanie Trump. “Our Dreamers have gone on to become teachers, social workers, secretaries, electricians, nurses, entrepreneurs, and proud and productive citizens.”

With its enviable location on 4.5 beachfront acres in Sunny Isles Beach, it’s no surprise that Acqualina has long focused on preserving this pristine slice of paradise. The resort team often participates in beach cleanup projects and during sea turtle season, Acqualina partners with the Miami-Dade County Sea Turtle Conservation Program. Through this relationship, resort guests and residents can learn about sea turtles and participate in a memorable experience watching the Conservation staff release baby sea turtles onto the beach at night.

Throughout the year Acqualina participates in programs and events that promote education and assist local families in need through food, toy and back-to-school drives.

“At Acqualina, we strive to integrate luxury living with a profound commitment to environmental conservation,” said Narraidoo. “Our comprehensive approach allows guests, residents, team members, and the local community of all ages to actively contribute to meaningful conservation efforts, promoting a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility within our community.”

FROM SOIL TO SPOIL

Seed to Skin’s indulgent line of face and body care sprouts up in-room at Acqualina.

Founded with the belief that high-quality skin care should be as pure and refined as it is effective, Seed to Skin Tuscany is the brainchild of Jeanette Thottrup, owner of the famed Tuscan resort Borgo Santo Pietro, who has chosen Acqualina as the first U.S. resort to offer her line as an in-room amenity. “The collaboration with Acqualina Resort holds significance for Seed to Skin Tuscany beyond just launching our first U.S. in-room amenities. It’s about fostering a synergy rooted in our shared belief of providing our clients with the absolute best care,” she says. “Acqualina’s unwavering dedication to delivering luxurious experiences seamlessly aligns with Seed to Skin Tuscany’s core values of prioritizing quality, integrity, and efficacy in skincare.”

Guests can now experience the line’s The Matcha Soap, made with Tuscan cypress and Sicilian Mandarin; The Devotion Linden Flower body balm, featuring probiotics and Italian thermal water; The Revival Shampoo, with its low-foam consistency to delicately repair hair and ingredients like Horsetail extract to strengthen one’s mane; and The Revival Conditioner, loaded with essential minerals and thermal plankton to increase hair’s silkiness and hydration.

WE BELIEVE THIS IS A PERFECTLY ALIGNED PARTNERSHIP AND THAT IT FURTHER SHOWCASES ACQUALINA’S

CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO BRING THE VERY BEST TO OUR GUESTS, says Acqualina CEO and Partner Deborah Yager Fleming.

Both of our brands are committed to being on the forefront of innovation and treating our guests like we would our own families. This commitment includes a genuine dedication to higher wellness and products that truly care for the body.

From the onset, Seed to Skin Tuscany has been reflective of Thottrup’s mission to create effective products made with responsibly sourced ingredients from the finest places on earth. The line features both natural and organic ingredients, most of which are sourced from the owner’s own farm in Tuscany or by researching to find the top environmentally friendly micro-producers working around the world. Formulations are done exclusively in their onsite lab and developed by Seed to Skin Tuscany’s own dedicated skincare experts.

“Not only do Seed to Skin Tuscany’s products provide incredible results, they come in beautifully crafted, reusable ceramic bottles, which minimize environmental impact,” says Yager Fleming. “The partnership perfectly demonstrates Acqualina’s commitment to being sustainable without sacrificing experience or top-quality offerings.”

Should guests wish to experience a wider array of the holistic line’s products, Acqualina Boutique also offers an expanded array of the line, instantly transporting you to the tranquil nature of Tuscany—no passport required.

STRIVING FOR Success

AFTER A DECADE MOVING AROUND WHILE WORKING AT A GLOBAL LUXURY HOSPITALITY BRAND, JEFF GIASSON SETTLED DOWN AT ACQUALINA IN 2017 AS DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCES FOR THE MANSIONS. HIS STRENGTHS CONTINUE TO SHINE BRIGHTER EACH YEAR AS HE’S WORKED HIS WAY UP TO HIS MOST RECENT POSITION AS REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF THE ESTATES AT ACQUALINA AND THE MANSIONS AT ACQUALINA. THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT THE NEW ROLE? AS A PEOPLE-PLEASER, MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY IS PART OF HIS DNA.

What brought you to Miami?

I am originally from Oklahoma but have lived in Miami for the last 10 years. Hotels brought me here but Acqualina’s residences are what’s keeping me here, as I had previously moved five times in 10 years working for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

Describe your role as Regional Vice President and General Manager of The Mansions and The Estates.

My role is to ensure we provide five-star service to our residents at both properties, keep the properties looking pristine, and ensure employees are top-notch and happy to work here, since happy employees translates to happy residents!

How do you ensure you and your team are always exceeding guests’ expectations?

I believe service comes from the heart and by building relationships and showing true care and concern is what helps us to often exceed expectations.

Can you share a story of a time you went above and beyond for a resident?

A resident who does not often leave the property went to stay at a nice resort for their anniversary, and we set up a special amenity welcoming them in their room upon arrival to make their anniversary special, even if we weren’t physically there.

Is there anything people may not know about The Estates at Acqualina’s pool and beach area?

People often forget how many options there are to do out there with three pools to choose from, a FlowRider, a pool slide, expansive beach area, basketball court, and even an outdoor gym area!

If you moved into The Estates, which of the luxurious amenities would you appreciate most?

The AcquaFit Fitness & Wellness Center, as I enjoy working out. I would also swim laps in the pool and then relax at night with a movie in the cinema!

LIFE Party OF THE

ORIGINALLY FROM MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA, JESSICA ROLDAN CELEBRATES 18 YEARS IN MIAMI AND AT ACQUALINA. AS THE RESORT’S EVENTS MANAGER, SHE’S

THE ONE WHO HELPS BRING DREAMS TO REALITY WHEN PLANNING MEMORABLE EVENTS LIKE WEDDINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS. FROM CRAFTING CREATIVE MENUS TO COORDINATING LOGISTICS, SHE’S READY TO TACKLE ANY AND ALL REQUESTS. THE KEY TO LEAVING LASTING MEMORIES? ENSURING EVEN THE SMALLEST DETAILS ARE COVERED.

Can you share a story of a time you went above and beyond for an event?

In the world of luxury events, exceeding expectations is key. Take, for instance, a couple who returned to celebrate their first anniversary after having their wedding at our hotel. While they requested a standard beachfront dinner, we saw an opportunity to create a truly special experience by recreating their wedding sweetheart table—including the décor and menu. The couple was so impressed and grateful for this gesture that they remained loyal guests of Acqualina, returning to celebrate all their special occasions.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

Ultimately, the true reward comes from the emotional connection we create. Seeing the joy on the client’s face and their guests having a truly memorable time is what makes it all worthwhile.

What makes Acqualina a special place to celebrate an event?

Acqualina’s luxurious ambiance provides a sophisticated and unforgettable backdrop for any event. From the elegant décor and world-class amenities to exceptional culinary experiences, every detail is designed to impress. But what truly sets Acqualina apart is our focus on exceeding guest expectations. We are committed to personalization, ensuring your event is truly unique and reflects the client’s individual style.

What are some of the common requests guests may have and what are some of the more unique ideas you’ve helped bring to life?

From orchestrating airplanes trailing love messages during weddings to coordinating skydiving shows for groundbreaking ceremonies, I relish the opportunity to embrace all requests and turn unique ideas into reality. This flexibility is what allows me, along with my incredible team at Acqualina, to tailor every event to the client’s specific vision.

How has Acqualina evolved since you joined the team 18 years ago?

The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, and Acqualina continues to adapt to stay at the forefront. Our unwavering commitment remains the same: creating exceptional guest experiences. We achieve this by fostering a culture of innovation and excellence within our team.

By investing in our staff’s happiness and motivation, we ensure they can deliver exceptional service to every guest.

What is your top trick for ensuring the team exceeds guest expectations and events run smoothly?

I actively listen to the client’s vision, ask insightful questions, and pay close attention to every detail. This allows me to anticipate any potential needs and proactively address them. Once the plan is finalized, I don’t just transfer information—I enthusiastically brief my team, ensuring everyone understands their role and gets excited about creating a truly special event for our guests. This collaborative approach, along with meticulous planning and communication, is the key to exceeding expectations and making every event a success.

NEW Beginnings

FOLLOWING A DECADE WORKING FOR THE WORLD’S LARGEST HOSPITALITY COMPANY, NATALIE DEUTSCH RETURNED BACK TO HER NATIVE SOUTH FLORIDA JOINING THE TEAM AS DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCES AT THE MANSIONS AT ACQUALINA. SHE’S SPENT TIME TRYING HER HAND AT NEARLY EVERY SIDE OF THE HOTEL INDUSTRY, FROM FOOD & BEVERAGE TO GUEST EXPERIENCE, BRINGING A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND PLENTY OF PASSION TO HER NEW ROLE.

Where are you from originally and how long have you been in Miami?

I was born and raised in Boca Raton, and I moved to Boston in 2010 to attend Boston University and lived there for 10 years. During COVID, I moved back to South Florida and accepted a wonderful opportunity in Miami Beach.

What excited you most about joining the team at The Mansions at Acqualina?

After working for Marriott, the largest hotel company in the world, for nearly 10 years, it was extremely enticing to go to work for a family-owned, independent brand that is recognized as the best. This resonated with me, especially being raised with a small-town mentality.

Describe your role as Director of Residences.

I oversee the day-to-day operations of the property, engage in relationship-building with the residents, and lead the team to ensure we are providing an unmatched living experience for our owners.

How do you ensure you and your team are always exceeding guests’ expectations?

I lead by example and share relevant experiences to guide each member of my team to find their own ultimate success. Together, we actualize the best each has to offer.

How has your extensive hospitality experience prepared you for this new position?

My background varies greatly: I started out in Food & Beverage, then worked in hotels in all facets of the operation and was a Director of Guest Experience before I transitioned to the residential side of the business. All of this brings a wealth of differing experiences that help guide me in my role at The Mansions.

What do you find most impressive about The Mansions?

There is something extraordinary about being in the world’s finest residences while feeling completely at home. That is what makes Acqualina one of a kind.

What luxurious amenities or features may people not know about?

The hidden gem at The Mansions for me is the Great Lawn —there is something magical about being able to step from grass directly to sand.

CONNECTIONS HAUTE

Through her role aT

The Leading Hotels of the World, President and CEO Shannon Knapp is cultivating unmatched experiences and promoting sustainable luxury across the globe.

Shannon Knapp

There were two specific experiences in my life that sparked my interest in hospitality, says Shannon Knapp, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Leading Hotels of the World (LHW).

When I was at university, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Europe. During that time, I fell in love with the idea of exploring new destinations and experiencing new cultures. Then, I discovered you could actually make a career in travel when I joined the consumer travel team at American Express.

Knapp’s ascent to the leadership of LHW is a testament to her profound passion for travel and deep commitment to the hospitality industry. Her career took shape following a pivotal stint at American Express, where she honed her skills in luxury consumer travel, managing esteemed benefits for Platinum and Centurion Card members.

This experience paved her way to LHW, where she initially served as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer before rising to President and CEO in 2019.

Reflecting on her journey, Knapp shares, “Joining LHW marked a significant turning point where I could actively champion the success of independent luxury hotels and ensure they continue to thrive on their own terms.”

In the realm of global luxury travel, few names resonate as profoundly as Knapp. Under her stewardship, LHW continues to epitomize the pinnacle of luxury and independent spirit in hospitality, a journey that began back in 1928. Today, this prestigious organization connects over 400 of the world’s most extraordinary hotels across more than 80 countries, celebrating their unique stories and exceptional standards.

Under Knapp’s leadership, LHW not only upholds the highest standards of quality and luxury but also fosters a culture of innovation and inclusivity. She is a staunch advocate for women in leadership, significantly impacting LHW’s corporate culture, which boasts a balanced gender representation both in its workforce and leadership.

“It’s crucial that we build a culture of inclusivity and empowerment,” Knapp asserts. “We’re committed to creating and modeling opportunities for women, ensuring they see a path to leadership within our organization.”

PIONEERING PROGRESS

LHW’s mission is deeply rooted in maintaining the independence and distinctiveness of its member hotels. Knapp emphasizes that each property is carefully chosen not only for its superior quality but also for the unique experiences it offers, making each stay unforgettable.

Our hotels are not just places to stay; they are gateways to authentic experiences, reflecting the spirit of their locales and the vision of their

independent owners, she explains.

This commitment extends to sustainable practices, a cornerstone of LHW’s operational ethos. Under Knapp’s guidance, LHW launched the Sustainability Leaders Collection, showcasing hotels that exceed benchmarks for environmental and community stewardship. This initiative aligns with the growing traveler demand for responsible luxury experiences that contribute positively to their destinations.

Looking ahead, Knapp is focused on steering LHW through the evolving landscapes of luxury travel, from the burgeoning interest in wellness and ecoconscious travel to leveraging cutting-edge technology for enhancing guest experiences and operational efficiency. “The future of luxury travel is about embracing change, anticipating guest needs, and being relentless in our pursuit of excellence,” says Knapp. Her leadership is not just about maintaining the status quo but about pushing boundaries and setting new benchmarks in luxury hospitality.

LHW was created by hoteliers, for hoteliers over 95 years ago. Today, the company is still owned by nearly 60 of its member hotels and governed by a hotelier Executive Committee of eight members, which CEO & Partner of Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach Deborah Yager Fleming serves on. Together with LHW’s management team, executive committee and worldwide colleagues, Knapp is committed to ensuring this remarkable segment of hospitality and outstanding hoteliers succeed.

LEVELING UP

For the discerning guests of Acqualina Resort & Residences, a member of this illustrious group, Knapp’s leadership at The Leading Hotels of the World offers more than just a promise of luxury—it guarantees an ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation in every stay, anywhere in the world.

“Two prominent trends in travel are gaining momentum: wellbeing and eco-friendly travel. Today, wellness transcends mere pampering; it’s about complete restoration and reinvigoration, a desire particularly strong among luxury travelers. Our discerning guests now seek experiences that encompass not only traditional spa treatments, but also fitness, nutrition, and mental and emotional well-being,” she says. “We’ve observed diverse wellness offerings across our properties: sound healing at Acqualina Resort, forest bathing rituals at The Datai Langkawi in Malaysia, professional coaching by healthcare professionals, nutritionists, or fitness experts at Lily of the Valley in France and Baur au Lac in Switzerland, soul-pampering activities such as art therapy workshops at Royal Mansour in Morocco, and traditional Mayan steam house experiences at Chable Yucatan in Mexico.”

Together with LHW’s management team and worldwide colleagues, Knapp is committed to ensuring this remarkable segment of hospitality and outstanding hoteliers succeed.

Our hoteliers are artisans of hospitality whose expertise, commitment to excellence, and individual flair allow them to create extraordinary travel experiences for guests.

COMING SOON

Leading this property’s aesthetic evolution is designer Isabel Tragash, founder of STA Architectural Group, which has evolved into one of South Florida’s leading interiors and architecture practices since its establishment more than 30 years ago. “We are making some changes with the color palette while retaining Acqualina’s most classical and elegant elements,” says Tragash, who’s lent her talented hand to previous redesigns at Acqualina. “The building has such amazing architectural bones, columns and crown moldings.”

The new Acqualina renovation begins with the fitness facility, which has been enhanced to reflect both the resort’s timeless style as well as the demands of this high-performance workout destination. “We focused on luxurious materials that are also durable,” says Tragash. The design team also focused on color, specifically an Italian marble called “dreaming green,” whose delicate hue references a similar color palette found at The Estates of Acqualina. “The marble has this playfulness and vibrancy that is really special,” says Tragash, who notes that the color “also helps tie all of the Acqualina resorts and residences together by bringing in the turquoise sea.”

Close to the fitness center are a series of event spaces that jointly comprise the Mediterranean Room on Acqualina’s expansive Mezzanine level. These are where residents and guests gather for celebrations and the look here reflects this joyful purpose. To do so, Tragash is using wall coverings with a heavy dose of texture, accenting them with a jewel-like metal trim. The main room can be broken up into smaller spaces via mobile panels – all of which, Tragash notes, reference Acqualina’s European sophistication: “The spaces feel as if they’ve been sun kissed by Tuscany,” she says.

To unify these crucial spaces, Tragash had designed hallway porticos and elevator banks that literally burst with color and luminescences. Around each elevator are towering mirrors along with “metallic flourishes in champagne bronze,” explains Tragash. “They add a fantastic shimmer while creating real moments” as guests experience the elevators. Tragash is also using luxurious tiles and custom rugs to further the area’s aesthetic excitement.

Beyond the Mezzanine, Tragash has lent her deft touch to the resort’s Concierge area. Custom, abstract artwork and Italian-design/Czechmade lighting. The former offer an elegant nod to the resort’s “lush foliage in soft and subtle ways,” says Tragash. The latter – which rely on time-tested European design and fabrication traditions — reflect Tragash’s commitment to sourcing truly artisanal-level design pieces from across the globe. Beautiful and bespoke, the lighting elements are much like Acqualina itself – locally inspired but filled with the most desirable pieces from around the world.

A PROPHECY FULFILLED. SPIRIT ELECTRIFIED.

SPECTRE

THE WORLD’S FIRST ULTRA-LUXURY ELECTRIC SUPER COUPÉ IS AN EMBLEM OF ARTISANSHIP IN HARMONY WITH ELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY.

Spectre is more than a motor car. It is a statement of intent and a symbol of a bright, bold future as RollsRoyce progresses into an all-electric era.

This commitment to an all-electric powertrain will only enhance the Rolls-Royce experience – instant torque, silent running and the sense of one imperceptible gear have defined the characteristics of an extraordinary canon of products dating back to the very first RollsRoyce, the 1904 10 H.P.

In unveiling Spectre, Rolls-Royce sets a new precedent in the creation of an entirely original class of motor car: the Ultra-Luxury Electric Super Coupé. This designation refers to Spectre’s indulgent proportions, specified in response to a commitment that there is no greater luxury than that of space.

The marque’s designers are deeply rooted in the context occupied by their motor cars. Therefore, their inspiration is drawn from worlds far beyond automotive, including haute couture, modernist sculpture, nautical design, tailoring and contemporary art. In conceiving the principal sketches for Spectre, the marque’s creatives were drawn to modern yacht concepts, specifically the clarity and precision of line, intelligent use of reflection and application of taper to emotionalise silhouettes.

For Spectre, Rolls-Royce’s engineers have seen much of their discipline pivot from the workshop to the digital space. Spectre is the most connected Rolls-Royce in history, and in harnessing the power of the motor car’s remarkable Decentralised Intelligence processing capabilities there is more requirement than ever for expert human experience.
