W E LCO M E TO F O N TA I N E B L E A U M I A M I B E AC H Fifty years ago, architect Morris Lapidus created the daring design of the original Fontainebleau, offering new and unexpected ways to experience glamour and style. His bold, creative thinking has served as a blueprint for our reinvention of the resort and his words and architecture continue to inspire us. Fontainebleau Miami Beach has recaptured its place among the world’s most celebrated resort playgrounds. A perfect mix of iconic glamour and 21st century chic, few hotels or resorts in the world define a destination as Fontainebleau defines Miami Beach. Here at Fontainebleau we are from our birth unique and original without compromise. When one thinks Miami one thinks Fontainebleau. We are a destination with character and personality and history and culture buried in the fantasy resort destination of Miami Beach Florida‌invented by an architect named Lapidus, who truly pioneered resort architecture as we know it today. We have infused Fontainebleau with the sexy, glamorous, ultramodern spirit of the original. A stage for fun and sun, fantasy and escape re-opened and renovated for a modern experience. The most extraordinary experiences lie at the intersection of your world and ours. The stage is set. Explore. Jeffrey Soffer Chairman & CEO

AN INTRODUCTION The timeless Fontainebleau has emerged from the original vision of legendary architect Morris Lapidus whose daring designs epitomized a concept of life “more unusual, more interesting, more warm.” Today, Fontainebleau Miami Beach weaves its attributes—striking design, headlining music, contemporary art, fashion, and technology— into a vibrant new kind of immersive guest experience. Situated on an oceanfront stretch of the Atlantic, the architectural wonder sprawls across more than 20 acres.

42

THE LEGACY Since its grand opening in 1954, Fontainebleau has been the place to see and be seen. When Fontainebleau’s architect unveiled his plans nearly 60 years ago, he explained: “Fontainebleau is designed to convey a feeling of delight, to provide a setting, away from home, away from daily cares, just for the pleasure of a great experience.” To provide this experience, Lapidus broke away from conventions to create what he called “an architecture of joy.” He chose passion over formality, curves over straight edges and hot colors over the traditional vanilla palette. Irony, surprise, wit, serendipity, coincidence, and whimsical extravagance were his tools. Critics and academic killjoys were outraged. The public couldn’t get enough of it. Eventually, the original Fontainebleau came to be recognized as a masterpiece of Modernist architecture, but it was always Modernism with an edge, and with plenty of humor and an abundance of art. Everything Lapidus designed or placed in Fontainebleau was meant to delight and surprise.

Hakkasan Hakkasan promises one of the most vibrant and memorable dining experiences. Whether drawn by splendid recollections of previous meals or the curiosity of what will delight at the next one, Hakkasan guests look forward to Chef Loo’s inspired menu of modern Cantonese cuisine. Chinois haute cuisine is meant to be enjoyed and experienced in the proper fashion. Let the fourth floor rooftop enclave of rich textures and hues mesmerize you with waves of exotic dishes. The name “Hakkasan” pays homage to the ‘Hakka’ people from the New Territories of Hong Kong while ‘san’ is the respectful Japanese form of address. This same tradition and respect goes into every menu item and how they are each prepared and presented. Traditional techniques use fresh local ingredients to ensure the contemporary dishes retain the essence of conventional Chinese cuisine. Hakkasan offers a mouthwatering selection of dim sum every night and for lunch every Saturday and Sunday, 12 - 2:45 PM. Aficionados will enjoy the traditional and new menu items that take stir fry, soups, congees, vegetables and dumplings to whole new levels.

Enjoy an incredible meal overlooking the resort’s iconic majestic ocean and poolside views. Wrap yourself in the sparkling elegance of the glassenclosed veranda with nautical themes that highlight the casual dining areas and cocktail lounge.

PIZZA & BURGER Pizza & Burger, from nationally acclaimed star chef Michael Mina, embodies the relaxed, fun flavors and conviviality of a backyard bash. Inspired by Mina’s sons and their two gastronomic obsessions – Sammy is the burger maniac, Anthony adores pizza – the restaurant’s casual dining menu is modeled on what the Mina family likes to cook, serve, and eat at their backyard get-togethers with family and friends. Chef Mina and his team at Pizza & Burger know how food naturally brings people together, so they strive to make every meal a celebration. Backed by decades of experience and a spirit of discovery, these craftsmen balance spice with sweetness, and bold with savory, to offer you global flavors you just can’t find anywhere else. Savor delicious pizzas made from scratch, rich with fresh, local ingredients and Mina’s to die for burgers, graze on an array of craveable snacks or design your own salads from a list of fresh, tasty ingredients. All of this goodness can be savored with handcrafted cocktails, punches, and wines by the glass, as well as a killer selection of local beers. Kickback, relax, and enjoy the lively vibe.

BLEAUFISH Taking freshness to a new level, Fontainebleau Executive Chef Thomas Connell and his team launched BleauFish, the hotel’s very own commercial fishing boat, providing fish, lobster and crab claws to the hotel’s famed award wining restaurants. BleauFish provides most of the 500 pounds of seafood used daily, where the live catch is received and housed in a collection of 2,000-gallon salt-water tanks called “Water World.” Designed and built by Fort Lauderdale’s Living Color Aquariums, Water World includes fish friendly amenities including temperaturecontrolled water — Florida spiny lobsters prefer the thermostat set to 70 degrees; Maine lobsters prefer to chill at 50 degrees. A blue-hued ocean mural on the walls of Water World, and the tanks’ lights, kept on timers to mimic the ocean’s patterns, relaxes the fish. “We want them to feel at home,” says Chef Connell. “The less stress a fish feels, the more delicious it’s going to taste. And that’s the whole reason we did this: to provide guests the freshest seafood experience possible. We’re literally going from ocean to table in a matter of hours.”

THE ART OF FONTAINEBLEAU The new 21st century Fontainebleau follows Lapidus’ precedent by incorporating “cool and hot” examples of contemporary art as a part of its radical departure from the ordinary. The mission of Fontainebleau’s art program is to entertain and educate. It is defined by a select number of world-class visual artists and thinkers. Each of them has a significant impact on the look and feel of Fontainebleau. In addition to Turrell’s light installations, major works include the chandeliers by Ai Weiwei, works by Rosalyn Drexler, John Baldessari and Tracey Emin, and photography by Thomas Ruff and Liza Ryan. Each work of art you see in Fontainebleau today is unique, original and site-specific. All the work has been integrated into the hotel’s total architecture and design to create a completely curated environment. Guests walking the lobby and encountering one of James Turrell’s light installations or an Ai Weiwei chandelier will know at once that Fontainebleau is unlike any other hotel on earth, and that the party is on.

172

AI WEIWEI CHANDELIERS In the Chateau Lobby are three crystal chandeliers that impart an ultramodern, sophisticated and glamorous atmosphere. Multimedia impresario Ai Weiwei, designer of the famed “Bird’s Nest” at Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics, created these brilliant chandeliers for Fontainebleau. By dramatically increasing the scale of a normal chandelier, Ai made a common object an unfamiliar and awe-inspiring one. Paradoxically, the sheer size of the complete pieces also emphasizes the thousands upon thousands of individual components required to create them. For Fontainebleau, the chandeliers act as contemporary updates of Morris Lapidus’ original designs. They embrace the historic past of Fontainebleau while simultaneously looking towards the future.

JAMES TURRELL James Turrell’s work in light and color provides Fontainebleau’s artistic signature. Turrell’s work also has a strong historical resonance with Morris Lapidus’ own early experiments. Lapidus, like Turrell, understood the power of light and color to define and shape the guests’ experience.

INSPIRATION An enduring architectural landmark. Bold and imaginative design. Lapidus prompted new and unexpected ways to experience glamour that has been endured for over half a century. The rebirth of Fontainebleau magnificently restored Lapidus’ signature details.

178

Chateau Lobby with, at left, The Stairway to Nowhere

COLUMNS A signature effect of Lapidus’ design is the column disappearing into the lighted “cheese hole.” When Lapidus was designing retail stores in New York in the 1950’s, there were typically buildings over the stores, with tons of steel and masonry. Lapidus’ drew the column into a lighted hole so the weight disappeared, thus making the building seem lighter.

CHEESEWALL The underlying project of all Lapidus architecture is to literally make the walls disappear. In many of his designs, Lapidus used indirectly lit display niches in “woggle” shapes to display merchandise and de-substantiate the walls. These cheese “woggles” or “cheese holes” are integrated throughout Fontainebleau with great effect. The architecture resides in arranging and directing the dance of vision.

STAIRWAY TO NOWHERE This iconic landmark maintains its gold hue and original architecture, and it is the focal point of the hotel’s expansive Chateau Lobby. When Fontainebleau opened in 1954, guests descended the Stairway To Nowhere, dressed in their finest evening attire, for the sheer pleasure of making a grand entrance. Today it continues to be used for guests to make an unforgettable entrance.

BOWTIE The “bowtie” floor pattern, one of the original Morris Lapidus design elements is reflexed in the Chateau Lobby’s white marble floor decorated with black marble bows. The bowties are a nod to the ones Lapidus wore personally throughout his entire adult life. Under the design direction of Jeffrey Beers and Lifescapes International, Fontainebleau’s poolscape boasts a bowtie inspired free-form pool.

DISCOVER THE WORLD THROUGH THE LENS OF PETER LIK

GETTING THE PERFECT SHOT

Peter’s life and career as a landscape photographer would be nothing without the strong determination of his parents, who barely escaped the harsh realities of their homeland of the Czech Republic after WWII, for a better life on the beautiful continent of Australia. Thanks to their incredible fortitude, Peter grew up surrounded by the most breathtaking landscapes on the planet. Rivers, forests, deserts, beaches, mountains, and the Great Barrier Reef completely set the stage for the Artist’s strong and powerful connection to the natural world – a connection that drives him to this day.

The truly pivotal moment that set Peter on a course to become a photographer, occurred when he was only eightyears-old. His humble and hardworking parents bought him the “eye-widening” birthday gift of a Kodak Brownie camera. His first snapshot ever was of a spider web, glistening with morning dew in the family garden. Without any prompting and on instinct alone, Peter clicked the shutter and his future

Around the turn of the millennium, Peter’s collector base began to grow significantly, along with his portfolio of galleries – all of which he has personally designed himself. First came LIK Lahaina in 2003, Peter’s longest running gallery, which was well received by Maui locals and tourists alike. That success led to a opportunity in Las Vegas, where he opened LIK Caesars, “a total dream come true” for the Artist. From there, it was only onwards and upwards. Gallery after gallery began to pop-up around the nation – marking a true success story completely driven by Peter’s unending passion for the world’s greatest artist, Mother Nature. Throughout a remarkable career that spans over 30 years, Peter has sold countless works to a highly devoted audience of international collectors. He has made history with recordbreaking sales, and he has been recognized by some of the most reputable institutions in the world. But, none of this compares to the joy of doing what he loves every single day – capturing and sharing the most beautiful places on earth. To learn more, visit lik.com. flashed before his eyes. Destiny had found him. That moment is forever burned into his “brain, heart, and soul” – a moment he still draws from. A little over a decade later, Peter was finally able to pursue photography as something more than just a dream. He doubled up on jobs – working anywhere he could, just to be able to buy film and snap off a few shots in his spare time. He began to do anything he could to make his passion and career one and the same, including selling to a small local collector base, which quickly affirmed his innate talents. In the Artist’s late twenties, he made his first trip to the States. It was 1984 – the year that everything would change once again. While in Alaska, Peter encountered another professional photographer working in the panoramic format, an ideal medium for capturing landscapes in their entirety. Peter was instantly “floored” by the results it produced and wasted no time mastering its wide field of view. Since then, panorama has become his calling card, a style by which his known and praised for, and he has never looked back. For years afterwards, Peter continued studying the raw, diverse beauty of the United States, which he had been longing to capture since childhood; it is reflected in his well-regarded fine art photography book, Spirit of America, which explores the magic of all 50 states. However, it was the American Southwest that truly grabbed Peter’s full attention, the subject of many of his greatest masterworks, such as the Grand Canyon, White Sands National Monument, Death Valley, and Horseshoe Bend. Therefore, it is no surprise that Las Vegas was chosen as the perfect, central location to set up LIK USA headquarters, where Peter could remain among a photographer’s paradise.
