Kenzo Takada dresses the Mah Jong

Free spirited and audacious designer Kenzo Takada, known as "the most Parisian of Japanese fashion designers", has designed an exceptional collection of fabrics and ceramics for Roche Bobois. To dress the Mah Jong sofa, he drew inspiration from traditional kimonos of the Nô theater. He reinterpreted the motifs and colors, creating delicate and sophisticated harmonies that symbolize the three times of the day: Asa (morning), Hiru (noon), and Yoru (evening).

Mah Jong. Modular sofa system, design Hans Hopfer. Upholstered in Nô Gaku fabrics, Yoru version, designed by Kenzo Takada for Roche Bobois. Manufactured in Europe.

Chef mark Mcewan From his early years as Canada’s youngest ever, executive chef at Toronto’s upscale Sutton Place Hotel to his latest endeavor, trendy resto bar Fabbrica, Mark McEwan is never content to rest on his laurels. McEwan has led the restaurant scene in Toronto for many years. He joins the ranks of the truly innovative with groundbreaking Toronto standards from “North 44” to “Bymark” to the always interesting “ONE”, a staple for the “see and be seen” crowd in Yorkville. With “Fabbrica”, he has taken another turn and captivated customers with rustic Italian fare in a warm, yet contemporary setting at The Shops at Don Mills. But, it doesn’t stop with dining -- in early 2009 he turned his attention to upscale gourmet food and opened McEwans at The Shops at Don Mills. Always attentive to the changing needs of the consumer. His best selling cookbook “Great Food at Home” added author to his resume and he hasn’t stopped there. In late 2011 Mark, with the help of Jacob Richler once again wowed us with “Fabbrica”

the cookbook based on the recipes featured in his latest restaurant. Mark has also added television personality to his long list of talents and was the head judge on “Top Chef Canada”. His first show for The Food Network, “The Heat” was a riveting behind the scenes look at North 44 Caters as well as the building of McEwans grocery store - a ratings winner. In 2013 Mark paired with OTG Management to consult on menus for two restaurant concepts that were built at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, Fetta and Nobel have received many accolades since their openings that year. Mark’s grocery store McEwan also took on the task of feeding commuters…there are now 10 grab and go stations in the airport that feature a selection of sandwiches, salads, snackboxes and mini meals all made and shipped daily from the store to the terminals. Mark has now taken his famous McEwan food store to the downtown core. The new McEwan is situated in the PATH under the TD Tower and focuses on prepared foods, making breakfast, lunch and dinner on the go a breeze.

The bar scene Located off of the main lobby, ONE restaurant and bar at The Hazelton Hotel evokes the charm of famous hotel bars, yet with a contemporary twist to the decor. The place is usually abuzz with an active bar scene, with bartenders concocting delectable cocktails or popping the cork on a bottle of bubbly. When weather permits, it’s lovely to sit outside on the street-level patio to enjoy happy hour or post-dinner drinks with friends.

“WE’RE BREAKING GROUND ON A BIG DREAM,” said Sam Mizrahi, president and founder of Mizrahi Developments, in early October during the ground-breaking ceremony for The One, Canada’s tallest building, The inspiration for the mixed-use tower came from its location on the southwest corner of Yonge and Bloor as the intersection is integral to the identity of Toronto and symbolic of the energy and confidence of Canada, he pointed out. It is also part of Bloor Street West, the leading luxury marketplace in Canada with flagship stores for the global brands. “We all felt the responsibility to create something extraordinary…something that hadn’t been done in Canada before,” he explained. The first step was to hire Foster + Partners, one of the most innovative architectural practices in the world. Based in London, England, the firm has been responsible for much of the British capital’s changing skyline in the last 20 years with buildings such as the Gherkin. The architects were excited to contribute to the skyline of Toronto, now North America’s fourth largest city and a booming global hub. The One is an innovative exoskeleton hybrid design with much of the tower’s support on the exterior, allowing for maximum exposure to sunlight on the interiors. In the six-level podium, the ground floor has a ceiling height of over 30 feet and clear spans of glass with no interior support structures. It has been described as an “urban room” into which people can move seamlessly. The ground floor of the podium will be flagship retail space while the other floors in the podium will contain a level for restaurants of international cuisine and amenities for the residents, including club rooms for entertaining, a fitness retreat, a Sky Lobby with soaring walls of glass and a beautiful 9,000 sq.ft terrace garden with a full-size infinity pool, heated all year round. The One will also have an international boutique hotel, new to Toronto, which will have rooms available for overnight guests of residents. The structural engineering of the tower, which is 1005 feet tall, is purposefully expressed on the exterior. A pattern of horizontal slots repeats through the length of the tower, creating a visual rhythm. Bronze trusses, part of the structural engineering, are like jewelry, encasing the tower and providing an interesting visual element that becomes part of the residences. Lighting in the tower’s exterior will allow it to have a special presence even at night. The architects were aware that most towers in Toronto are straight up and down with little articulation on their exteriors. They wanted The One to stand out as a beacon of ingenuity and beauty – a landmark for the commercial energy of Toronto and Canada. Foster + Partners is a hot house of creative thinking. No project is ever like another. “There’s a cross fertilization of ideas about how you approach things,” explains Giles Robinson, the lead architect on the project at Foster + Partners, which has close to 1,300 employees in its offices in London and around the world. ”The scope and the range of projects is quite unique, not just in scale but in type. Many architectural firms specialize. But we work on airports, residential projects, commercial projects, museums, even projects for the European Space Agency on the moon.”

The architectural innovations are only part of the vision for The One. Mr. Mizrahi believes that luxury is an emotion that arises when a builder has paid the utmost attention to every single detail – in the things you see as well as in the things you don’t see. When a residence is built with care, there’s a feeling of being in a sanctuary, in a place where you can feel restored. The beauty of The One is that each residence is a glass sanctuary with great expanses of glass and the sky like an ever-changing, moving art piece. Window benches along the perimeter of the living space is a key design feature in many of the residences, putting you skin to glass to city, safe inside your serene home while the life of Toronto thrums on the other side. The amenities are as carefully planned as every other element in the building. A bellboy and 24/7 concierge are at your service. Anything you might want from local stores or shops in The One can be delivered to your residence at your convenience. You never have to park your own car as a team of parking valets at the rear entrance will greet you to park and retrieve your vehicle at your command. Food from any of the restaurants in the podium can be delivered to the garden terrace or the club rooms or your residence for simple meals or elaborate dinner parties and cocktail events. The rise of the Mizrahi brand has been remarkable in the last seven years. From the start, the company distinguished itself by gaining the highest international standards such as the ISO9001 certification, which entails constant auditing by a third party to ensure customer satisfaction and quality processes. With over 25 years in the real estate industry, Mizrahi Developments has a long history in building custom-designed single homes in some of Toronto’s most exclusive neighbourhoods. The company’s boutique condominium midrise projects in Yorkville at Hazelton Avenue and Davenport Road transformed the northern gateway into the beloved historic neighbourhood. Working closely with heritage experts and the community, Mizrahi built 133 Hazelton, 128 Hazelton and 181 Davenport to improve the streetscape and yet look as though they were always part of the village-like charm of the area. The company is also building a boutique project in Ottawa at 1451 Wellington West, the new “it” neighbourhood in the capital’s west end. Thoughtfulness about what a location deserves in terms of a development is the magic of creating buildings and homes that are appreciated not just by the owners but also by the people who walk by them. The One has been designed to be a place not just for the residents but also for all the people who live in or visit Toronto. At the busiest intersection in Canada and connected underground to the main transportation hub of the city, the building meets the ground in a beautiful curtain of glass. This lightness at the ground of the tallest building in Canada is a noteworthy and poetic touch. Sidewalks are 30 feet at the base, creating a civic plaza with trees and benches and public art. This is a place to slow down, to take in the energy of Toronto at its most popular, energy-filled intersection.
