FOUNDERS AND OWNERS The King David Hotel was founded in 1931 by Elie and Nissim Mosseri, scions of one of the richest Egyptian Jewish families. Their family owned a bank and managed the most luxurious hotels in Egypt, including the famous Shepheards Hotel in Cairo and the Mena House at the foot of the pyramids. The King David was planned to be the grand hotel of Jerusalem at a time when Jerusalem was just beginning to be an important destination on the travel routes of the rich and influential. In the wake of Israel’s War of Independence in 1948, the damaged King David closed its gates. In 1957, the Federmann family decided to acquire the hotel. Yekutiel (Xiel) and Samuel (Samo) Federmann arrived in the British Mandate of Palestine in 1938 and 1940 respectively, after fleeing from Nazi Germany. Their family had owned a chain of bakeries in Germany. The Federmann brothers soon demonstrated their business acumen. In 1946, they bought the Kaete Dan hotel on the Tel Aviv beachfront and in 1953, after the founding of the State of Israel, they opened Israel’s first five-star hotel, the Dan Tel Aviv. The hotel was a success from the start and the Federmanns then focused their efforts on expanding their hotel business by buying the King David in Jerusalem and reopening it as Israel’s foremost luxury hotel. After a protracted worldwide chase, they managed to find the owners of the original hotel, now dispersed in the capitals of Europe, and acquire the King David. After extensive renovations, including adding two new floors, the hotel reopened in late 1958. It was an immediate success, becoming the Jerusalem venue for all visiting dignitaries and heads of state arriving in Israel.

thE lEgAcy Located on King David Street, at an elevated point in the center of Jerusalem overlooking the Old City and Mount Zion, the King David Hotel has quite an incredible history. The Mosseri family opened the hotel in 1931, with the goal of rivaling the leading luxury grand hotels of the world. The Federmann family purchased the hotel in 1957 and restored the damage incurred during the War of Independence and the section that had been bombed in 1946, making the King David once again a leading landmark in Jerusalem. Today, more than 86 years after it opened, the King David Hotel is the flagship hotel of the Dan Hotels chain and an official historic landmark. It continues to host a wealth of world leaders and heads of state visiting Israel. Notable guests over the decades have included royalty such as the dowager empress of Persia, the queen mother Nazli of Egypt, and king Abdullah I of Jordan, who arrived with a retinue of horses and camels. The hotel provided asylum to three royal heads of state who had to flee their countries: king Alfonso VIII of Spain, forced to abdicate in 1931; emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, driven out by the Italians in 1936; and king George II of Greece, who set up his government in exile at the hotel after the Nazi occupation of his country in 1942. Egyptian president Anwar Sadat stayed at the hotel during his historic visit to Israel to launch the IsraeliEgyptian peace process, conferring at the hotel with Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin and foreign minister Moshe Dayan.
Other notable guests have included all Israeli prime ministers, US presidents, including Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barak Obama; and many US secretaries of state, including Henry Kissinger, Condoleezza Rice, and John Kerry. Other heads of state included Winston Churchill, Willy Brandt, Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, and Nelson Mandela. Movie stars too have made the King David their home away from home, among them Kirk Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Candice Bergen, and Richard Gere, as have famous artists such as Isaac Stern, Pablo Casals, and Marc Chagall. Designed by Swiss architect, Emile Vogt, the hotel features a high-ceilinged, marble-floored lobby, muted green and beige colors, and Egyptian, Assyrian, Hittite, Phoenician, and Greek motifs in public areas. Motifs depicting biblical plants such as pomegranates and vines and stars of David decorate the rooms. The spacious terrace offers a wide-angle view of the Old City with its four quarters – Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim. Each quarter has an incredibly rich history that dates back thousands of years and features some of the holiest sites in the world. The Western Wall, focus of Jewish prayer from around the world, and the Dome of the Rock, one of the three holiest sites in the Muslim faith. In the Christian Quarter, Jesus’ final steps can be followed along Via Dolorosa to the Holy Sepulcher. The sights and sounds of the Old City take you back in time, while the echo of history can be heard when you visit the King David Hotel!

Living Legends Ancient Art Eternal Beauty How often do we meet people who attract our endless interest? People who are living legends, and pure sources of the culture and history of their people? Although sometimes these people are right next to us, we do not notice them as they generally do not seek to attract attention to themselves. These are the people who make you feel comfortable and allow your soul to come closer to the life-giving source, they are genuine people. Ben Zion David, born in 1955, is a Yemenite Jew, a wise man, an
eighth generation jeweler, a keeper of his people’s traditions and the founder of the Yemenite Jewish Culture Museum which opened in Old Jaffa in 2010. His gallery is in existence since 1987. “I wanted an organic, natural and vital place, which would bring people to feel a true connection with the past, even to a small degree. A place where they could touch the artifacts, feel the scents and see with their own eyes how a jewel is being created.” It all begins at the entrance of the museum, not a museum where faded exhibits gather dust, but a living museum, a workshop-museum. On display are elaborate traditional costumes, ancient jewelry and the tools for making them, household items, archive photographs, stone mill and woven baskets. Everything can be touched! Everything is full of life. Visitors are offered a cup of traditional Yemenite coffee with spices and dried dates, while seated on a comfortable Diwan sofa, surrounded by antique stoneware, tools, photographs on the walls and embraced by a warm and friendly atmosphere. Right in front of the visitors, amazing pieces of silver jewelry are created. On the wall is an old black and white portrait of an elderly man holding jewelry tools and a piece of jewelry. His face radiates wisdom and peace.
“This is my grandfather, says Ben Zion. He was a wise man, a Torah scholar; he lived in Yemen and was a famous jeweler. Also there are pictures of my father. He was a jeweler and worked almost until the last day of his life. My father passed away not so long ago, he was more than a hundred years old. God bless his memory.” According to tradition, Yemenite Jews are the descendants of the Tribe of Judah, who arrived in Yemen after the destruction of the first Temple. Upon the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, immigration project “Operation Magic Carpet” also known as “On Wings of Eagles” brought almost 50,000 Jews to Israel. It was with this operation that Ben-Zion’s parents and family arrived in
Israel from Najiran. They wandered for two years in Yemen over difficult terrain and through treacherous situations until they finally arrived in Aden. Ben Zion’s father managed to bring his precious tools in order to continue his craft and provide for his family in Israel. After assimilating into modern Israeli culture, most of their traditions have been lost. Sadly, as a result Yemenite filigree has become a dying art. Ben Zion feels it is his duty to preserve this art bequeathed to him, which is the driving force in each and every one of his creations. In Yemen, virtually all jewelry was made by Jews and their techniques were kept in the family. Beauty streamed from hand to hand, from father to son for centuries and even millennia, adorning and sanctifying
the world around us, life’s mysteries encrypted in silver lace from generation to generation. At first glance, it may seem that Yemenite jewelry is incredibly complex and ornate. But upon a closer look, all of the silver threads of different diameters are woven with brilliant simplicity. The tools used were very simple which they made themselves. In Yemen, a customer would present five silver coins to the silversmith, two were for his pay and three were to be melted down into the jewel itself. Two thirds of the time to create the jewel was taken just to create the five basic wires. At the age of ten Ben Zion began helping his father in his workshop to prepare and interweave the silver filigree threads.
ANCIENT ART & ETERNAL BEAUTY
“Until this day, I work with the unique tools of my ancestors. Each small jewelry piece, each individual thread has a Yemenite name. Eventually, Ben Zion went on to higher learning and became an electrical engineer, however tradition was stronger and as the demand for his beautiful creations grew, he became totally immersed in the art of filigree.
Ben Zion is proud to present his designs as a representative to his people and their special culture. Exhibitions of his private museum "Yemenite Art" have been held in Australia, Santa Fe New Mexico, Krakow, China and most recently Russia. His latest collection "Queen of Sheba" unveiled during "Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Russia Moscow" is an exciting collection of exotic and soulful jewelry, art celebrating women of style, personality & spiritual valor, qualities instilled into each unique creation. Many items are innovative with compartments and functions that are fun and creative. All designs are inspired by the jewelry worn at the Yemenite bridal hina, a traditional ceremony still performed to this day. The jewelry that once glorified queens, princesses and aristocratic ladies continues to be a desirable symbol of exotic beauty. Collaborating with other artists, whether in Israel with Sharon Tal and the recently revived fashion house Maskit, Russian clothes designers .... or exclusive Italian cutlery specialists, Ben Zion is continually presenting new and inventive ways to design with his unique filigree style. Ancient techniques perfected throughout the centuries combined with advanced computer programs and the imagination of the artist and the results are endless.

this program Ben Zion was able to createvirtual three-dimensional shape of the ideal pomegranate in his mind. After filling in the frame with filigree and traditional patterns by hand, the final result was a masterpiece. “This was a landmark event for me!”
