THE TEXTURE OF TIME Jean-Daniel Rohrer’s paintings are like memory maps.
Member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts
They are never caught up in a specific moment in time. Instead Rohrer plays on the ambiguity of memory, and of history, or our collective memory. He works outwards from the centre of his canvas, gradually building a surface that carries a lot of potential meaning. The canvas surface is a field, and it has markings – letters – stencil marks – directional markers – photo and text images. These works allude to an unconscious, and this in a world where our memory has been disconnected from persona due to the way data – visual and verbal – are now gathered. And so it is rare to find an artist who reads significance into the vernacular of history, and uses the ephemera of popular culture and imagery from high art together in a single work.

En 1908, César Ritz accepte de prêter son nom au Ritz-Carlton Montréal à condition de respecter les standards Ritz : chaque chambre doit disposer de sa propre salle de bain, un service de valet 24 heures sur 24, un service concierge et une cuisine à chaque étage. Le Ritz-Carlton Montréal ouvre ses portes le 31 décembre 1912 en organisant l’une des soirées les plus mémorables de la décennie. César Ritz a également demandé que le lobby soit petit et intime tout en y plaçant un grand escalier incurvé pour que les Dames puissent le descendre avec leurs robes de soirée. Le bureau de réception incurvé date également de 1912. Il a été placé dans un coin en face des ascenseurs qui est toujours sa place actuelle. En 1913, César Ritz lance le service du thé de l’après-midi. Les muffins anglais et les scones étaient servis dans la Cour des Palmiers au prix de 30 centimes. Le 14 février 1916, le premier appel téléphonique longue distance a été effectué du Ritz-Carlton Montréal par le Président du Conseil de Bell qui a demandé : « Bonjour, est-ce Vancouver? » suivi de la réponse « Oui » à la suite de laquelle le Champagne a été sabré. En avril 1951, le Président français Vincent Auriol était tellement ravi de son expérience culinaire qu’il demanda qu’on lui prépare un dîner pour son vol retour. Ceci a permis au Ritz-Carlton Montréal de servir les repas pour les vols Air France pendant de nombreuses années. En 1964, Elizabeth Taylor et Richard Burton arrivèrent à l’hôtel pour se marier en prévenant les équipes seulement deux heures à l’avance. Ils demandèrent 2 caisses de Champagne et une douzaine de verres. Ils demandèrent également que deux employés du RitzCarlton Montréal fassent partie de leur mariage. Dans les années 70, un salon de beauté et de coiffure ouvre ses portes aux clients de l’hôtel. Le salon de coiffure eut la chance de recevoir des personnalités publiques comme Marlene Dietrich, Maria Callas, les baronnes de Rothschild, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Flora Macdonald ou encore Lady Hardinge. En 1976, le Ritz-Carlton Montréal a recu la plus haute distinction qu’un hôtel puisse recevoir : les 5 Diamants AAA. Une distinction que nous sommes les seuls à posséder au Québec actuellement. De nombreuses personnalités publiques ont séjournés au Ritz-Carlton Montreal, notamment : la Reine Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, Richard Nixon, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Georges Bush Sr., les Rolling Stones, Charles de Gaulle, Céline Dion… Le client qui a passé le plus long séjour à l’hôtel est resté pendant 15 ans…

In 1908, César Ritz agreed to allow the Montreal venture to use his name but stipulated that according to the Ritz standards, every room should have its own bathroom, ‘round the clock valet service, concierge services and a kitchen on each floor. The Ritz-Carlton Montreal first opened its doors on December 31st, 1912 by hosting one of the decade’s most glittering parties. César Ritz demanded the Lobby to be small and intimate yet have a curved grand staircase for the Ladies to show off their ball gowns as they descended. The curved front desk also dates back to 1912. The front desk was tucked somewhat inconspicuously into a corner of the lobby facing the elevators where it still stands today. In 1973, César Ritz launched the 5 O’clock Tea at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal. English muffins and scones were served in the Palm Court and were sold at a rate of 30 cents each. On February 14th, 1916 the Ritz-Carlton Montreal had the longest distance telephone call for 1227 miles to an audience that listened breathlessly as Bell Telephone’s Board Chairman, C.F. Sisi asked: “Hello. Is this Vancouver?” The reply -“Yes”- following which this was toasted with Champagne”. In April 1951, the French President Vincent Auriol enjoyed his dining experience so much that he requested meals be prepared for him for his return flight. This lead the Ritz-Carlton Montreal to supply all meals for Air France for many years. In 1964, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton arrived at the hotel to get married with only two hour’s notice. They asked for 2 crates of Champagne and two dozen glasses. They also asked 2 employees to be part of their wedding. In the 1970’s, a hair and beauty salon was opened to hotel guests. The salon welcomed the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Maria Callas, the baronesses Rothschild, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Governor General Jeanne Sauvé, Flora Macdonald and Lady Hardinge. In 1976, the Ritz-Carlton Montreal received the most distinguished rating a hotel can be given: the AAA 5 Diamonds Award. Today, The Ritz-Carlton Montreal is still the only hotel in Quebec to possess this Award. Many leading figures of the 20th century have stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal, including Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Richard Nixon, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Georges Bush Sr., The Rolling Stones, Céline Dion… The longest guest to have stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal stayed there for 15 years.
