H
uvy (Ahuva) Elisha, the Jerusalem artist, lived in Jerusalem until age six. Much of her fascination for olive trees, wild poppies and gladiolas came from these early years when she would explore the Judaean hills near the Bucharim section of her neighborhood.
Her father had been working abroad and brought the family to Vienna, then Prague and then London. Soon enough, the London blitz forced the family to move on once more to the seaside resort of Torquay, in Devonshire, south west England. Luckily her headmistress there was herself an artist, and she recognized
Huvy’s prodigious talent and lovingly encouraged her. When Huvy was 14 years old, the headmistress wrote a recommendation to the prestigious St. Martin’s School of Art in London. Huvy enrolled in St Martin’s as a child prodigy, the youngest student to ever enroll. She worked and absorbed every art form available. Huvy eventually got married and lived in England but she quickly decided that she wanted to raise her children in Israel. After living in different parts of the country Huvy, together with her husband and three children, eventually came back home to Jerusalem. These days, Huvy never gets tired of painting wedding scenes: Luscious garden ceremonies, blooming trees, exuberant chupas, jubilant flowers, the bride and groom joining their souls together.

Technically speaking, Huvy is a European trained, classically educated impressionist and post impressionist artist working in pastel, watercolor, pen, and oil. In Israel, she’s been the subject of many a tour guides. Everyone wants to know how it is that a European trained classical artist has come to live and work in Meah Shearim, the ultra-religious section of Jerusalem. Little do they realize that she is minutes from the neighborhood whose beauty first inspired her to spend her life recording Gd’s artistry in the world. Huvy also sees as her sacred mission to recreate the fervor and holiness of prewar European Jewry. This has been most vividly captured in her famous wedding scenes.
