Red Winter - The Newspaper

Red Winter Levanger’s main square is closed to traffic. Banners have been hitched between the trees surrounding the square. Flags are flying from the wooden pavilion with the lectern at the front of the square. The speeches of four agitators can be heard over loudspeakers. * * *

I. The first speaker is a member of the Thrane movement.

He took part in the 1851 workers’ uprising in Levanger that broke out when one of the agitators of the movement, Carl Johan Michelsen, was thrown into the town prison. 150 years later he awakens, once again standing on Levanger Torg.

Speech by the member of the Thrane movement Citizens of Levanger!

I call on you to sow the seed of revolution – transfer our power into the 21st century!

Some one hundred and fifty years ago, they sent Carl Johan Michelsen and our comrades to jail. Why were they thrown into the dungeon?

Because they were hungry! Because they had no work!

Because they wanted to send their children to school, but didn’t have the money for it!

Because they no longer wanted to send their children to war as cannon fodder for the gentlemen in power!

Because they wanted to have a say in matters concerning them.

Ha! They had to use soldiers to defeat our rebellion; we have given these mighty gentlemen quite a fright!

There would be plenty for everyone, if only things were distributed fairly:

Let the revolution start from this place in Levanger.

Let it spread to the south from the periphery of northern Europe and ignite the heart of Europe, which is weakened by the poison of neo-liberalism and neo-colonialism!

Europe with all its riches will have to change its relationship to the world.

The wars for resources, the exploitation and plundering of the periphery, the expropriation of land, the internment of the displaced and dispossessed, all this needs to be brought to a halt.

That is what we are fighting for, at this moment, in this place!

But before I return to the past, I want to tell you one more thing: As modern socialists, you must not look backward.

Do not leave the development of technological progress to the capitalists!

Your so-called Facebook and Twitter revolutions will not endure as long as modern technology remains a resource in the hands of the capitalists.

Down with the landowners!

Now, one hundred and fifty years later, I stand on Levanger Torg once again.

I hear that you have fought for the right to vote and the right to education, and even military service for women.

I hear that Norway is a rich country now.

I also hear that begging is nowadays banned in Levanger?

Is it really necessary for anyone to beg?

The more I enquire, the more I realize that you have not achieved the kind of social justice for which we fought in 1851.

You have fought for political equality and equality before the law; Do not stop there!

Fight for economic equality as well!

Only by fighting against the propertied class can we pave the way for a just society.

You yourselves must take control of technological progress!

Increase the speed of social transformation!

For economic democracy!

II. The second speaker is an activist with the civil rights movement of the Norwegian Roma. Her mother did not want to remain in the labour colony for «Tatere» that was established in 1908 by the Norwegian Mission for the Homeless with the financial support of the benefactors of the Astrup family.

Considered to be a social case unfit for integration, the mother was sterilized – a common practice between 1949 and 1970 at the «home» in Svanviken – in order to «save society the expense of any further problem children».

Today, those of us who are left are guaranteed cultural rights.

A museum, a music festival, a biotope of cultures.

But behind the colourful backdrop, the logic of inequality forges ahead!

Competition and exclusion are what keep capitalism alive.

By stigmatizing certain groups, capitalists force down the price of labour.

The comrade from the Thrane movement has stepped out of the past and calls on us to continue the fight.

I can report to you that our mothers put up resistance!

They ran away when they were to be interned at Svanviken, this labour colony set up by the Astrup family and their pastors for us Roma a hundred years ago.

As punishment, my mother was sterilized by the mission. I was put into an orphanage at Rostad on Inderøy. They took away our families, our language and our songs. They taught us that something was wrong with us, that we are a mistake for which we can only blame ourselves.

As an adult, I have fought against forced sterilization.

To this day, I fight for the truth about the Roma people in Norway and Europe.

For centuries we have lived on the fringes of society, as pariahs, as slaves and servants.

The capitalists of the 19th century, like the Astrup family in this case, the big farmers, the manufacturers, they all needed cheap labour. As an «inferior race» that was to be brought up to become useful members of society, they did not have to pay us Roma.

The Parliament passed laws against us.

We were destined for extinction.

Until the eighties, the Church and the so-called «welfare system» systematically legitimized and institutionalized the racist and sexist biopolitics against us Roma, aided by science and special laws.

Let us not spin around in the circle of cultural autonomies!

We need a coalition of all those who are marginalized, of migrants and refugees!

Day labourers, harvest workers, domestic servants, nannies, elder care workers, sex workers, become organized!

For solidarity with the precarious class!

Get out of the camps!

We need a Romanistan that breaks down all the barriers!

A Romanistan without limits!

A Romanistan in which land, water and air belong to all!

III. The third agitator is a Sami from the mountain regions of Verdal who joined the communist resistance against German fascism and the Quisling government during World War II. His ancestors lived in Norway before the settlers came from the south. In the 19th century, when capitalists bought up whole tracts of land in the region, laws for the assimilation of the Sami people were simultaneously introduced.

The leaders of a Sami rebellion in Kautokeino in 1852 were decapitated and their heads sent to Oslo to be preserved at the Royal Frederick University. Not until 1997, with help from the President of the Sami Parliament, did their descendants succeed in securing the release of the remains for burial.

Citizens!

In a long, drawn-out process we have fought for our political rights ever since Alta.

But what can the Sami Parliament do against the interests of international oil, mining and fishing corporations?

When one per cent have all the wealth, what good is democracy?

I stood up against the Nazis because I did not want their racist ideology to continue determining our lives.

I fought for liberation!

Like many of us working people from Lademoen, I joined the communists in Trondheim. Some of us gave their lives in the fight against fascism in Spain!

We demand that everyone have a say in the use of natural resources!

When the German fascists occupied Norway, we carried out sabotage missions against their labour camps.

We succeeded in helping several Yugoslavs and Russians escape across the border to Sweden. Many of us Sami from the Verdal mountains were involved.

I was tortured at the Gestapo camp in Falstad to reveal the names of other resistance fighters and their supporters among the population.

I almost did not survive.

After the war, our resistance was buried in silence.

Many were arrested as spies.

Not until last year did some of our fighters receive official honours.

The doctrine of superiority of the Norwegian culture and a Christian education have continued to justify the assimilationist policy against us Sami.

But the new logic scoffs at the human rights of the poor and the weak: It touts «all against all» as a fight for freedom!

Be vigilant: the new fascism is prospering under the guise of antiterrorism.

Put an end to total surveillance!

Away with private security companies and mercenary armies!

Stop the drone war!

Its goal has always been entirely mundane: To prevent us from raising any territorial claims to our land!

IV. The final speech is held by an environmental activist.

In recent years she has fought hard to ensure an extension of the moratorium against oil drilling off the Lofoten Islands. The battle between the fishing industry, the oil industry and the environmentalists dominated the election campaign in 2013. The new coalition government has pledged to protect Lofoten.

Speech by the activist for a radical ecological turnaround I greet you, my dear friends, in the language of the people of this northern landscape.

The resistance fighter from World War II is right when he says that fascism is on its way back. We can see it right in the midst of society: in the racist campaign slogans of so-called patriotic parties, in the pamphlets of young people filled with hate, in the neo-Nazi attacks on migrants and Roma throughout Europe.

If the struggles of the past are not to be in vain, we need to adopt a new and far more radical position!

The old logic that places the individual at the centre of the world is too limited.

Inaudibly for you, I greet the stones under our feet and the distant mountains from which they were hewn. My inner self receives the screeching answers of birds that mingle with the roar of the wind.

Fossil capitalism has forged an alliance with death!

We need a radical, a truly revolutionary change in perspective!

Using ever more destructive methods, it forces all natural wealth from our planet.

We human inhabitants of Norway are among the infinitely small percentage of living things that immediately and directly profit from the destruction of the earth.

With oil drilling planned in the Arctic, the Barents Sea and off the coast of Lofoten, we endanger our last untouched marine regions.

Do we really believe that quick profits such as these will enable our descendants to survive the collapse of the ecosystem?

Last year we achieved an important victory in the fight for the Lofoten Islands.

But we demand more:

Away with anthropocentrism!

The inhabitants of the seas, the skies and the earth are our allies.

The plants and the minerals are our comrades!

Let us regard the revolution from the perspective of the sand!

Stop all oil production in the Arctic!

Let us write our slogans in the language of the ocean’s depth!

Let us proclaim the revolution with the sounds of all animate and inanimate matter!

I agree with the comrade from the Thrane movement of the 19th century: we need a revolution, and we are the ones who must spark it off!

I agree with the Romanistan activist that we must not simply retreat into our own biotope, but need to enter into coalitions that rise above homo sapiens as a species!

Rød vinter Levanger torg er sperret for trafikk.

Mellom trærne som omgir plassen, er det spent opp bannere.

Flaggene vaier fra paviljongen av tre og talerstolen er plassert foran på plassen. Fra høyttalerne kan man høre talene til fire agitatorer. * * *

I. Den første taleren er medlem av Thranitterbevegelsen. Han deltok i arbeideropprøret i Levanger i 1851 som brøt ut da en av bevegelsens agitatorer, Carl Johan Michelsen, ble kastet i fengsel i Levanger.

150 år senere våkner han til live og står igjen på Levanger Torg.

Jeg maner dere til å så revolusjonens frø, overfør kraften vår inn i det 21. århundret!

For mer enn hundre og femti år siden satte de Carl Johan Michelsen og våre kamerater i fengsel. Hvorfor ble de kastet i fangehullet?

Fordi de var sultne! Fordi de ikke hadde noe arbeid!

Fordi de ville sende sine barn på skolen, men ikke hadde penger til det!

Fordi de ikke lenger ville sende sine barn som kanonføde i krigen for borgerskapet! Fordi de ville være med å bestemme over ting som angikk dem selv.

Ha! De måtte slå ned opprøret vårt med soldater, vi satte en skikkelig støkk i de store herrene!

Det ville vært nok til alle hvis det bare hadde blitt rettferdig delt:

På denne plassen i Levanger skal revolusjonen starte.

Fra Nord-Europas utkant skal den bre seg sørover og tenne hjertet til Europa, som er svekket av giften til nyliberalismen og nykolonialismen!

Det rike Europa vil måtte endre sitt forhold til verden.

Krigen om råstoff, utnyttingen og plyndringen av utkantene, ekspropriasjonen av land, interneringen av fordrevne og eiendomsløse, alt dette må stoppes.

Det er dette vi kjemper for, i dette øyeblikket, på denne plassen!

Ned med de store jordeierne!

Nå står jeg etter hundreogfemti år igjen på Levanger torg.

Som jeg har fått høre har dere kjempet frem retten til å stemme og retten til utdanning, til og med verneplikten for kvinner.

Jeg hører at Norge nå er et rikt land.

Jeg hører også at det nå er forbudt å tigge i Levanger?

Har noen virkelig behov for å tigge?

Jo mer jeg forhører meg, desto tydeligere forstår jeg at dere ikke har oppnådd den sosiale rettferdigheten som vi kjempet for i 1851.

Dere har kjempet dere til politisk likhet og likhet for loven; Stopp ikke der!

Kjemp dere også til økonomisk likhet!

Bare i kamp mot den herskende klassen kan vi bane vei for et rettferdig samfunn.

Men jeg vil si dere én ting til før jeg drar tilbake til fortiden: Som moderne sosialister har dere ikke råd til å være tilbakeskuende.

Overlat ikke utviklingen av de teknologiske fremskrittene til kapitalistene!

De såkalte Facebook- og Twitter-revolusjonene deres vil ikke ha noen varighet så lenge det moderne teknologiproduksjonsmiddelet er i hendene på kapitalistene.

Dere må selv ta styringen over den teknologiske fremgangen!

Framskynd endringen av samfunnet!

For det økonomiske demokratiet!

II. Den andre taleren er en aktivist fra borgerrettsbevegelsen for norske roma. Moren hennes ville ikke bli i arbeidskolonien for «tatere», som ble grunnlagt i 1908 av Norsk Misjon blant Hjemløse med finansiell støtte fra velgjørerne i familien Astrup. Moren ble sett på som et sosialtilfelle som ikke kunne integreres, og ble sterilisert, noe som var vanlig mellom 1949 og 1970 på «hjemmet» i Svanviken, «for å spare samfunnet for kostnadene med flere vanskelig integrerbare barn».

Romaktivistens tale Borgere!

I dag blir vi som er igjen, garantert kulturelle rettigheter.

Et museum, en musikkfestival, en biotop av kulturer.

Men bak den fargerike kulissen skrider ulikhetens logikk frem!

Det er konkurransen og marginaliseringen som holder kapitalismen i live.

Med stigmatiseringen av bestemte grupper presser kapitalistene ned prisen på arbeid.

Kameraten fra Thranitterbevegelsen har kommet til oss fra fortiden og maner oss til å videreføre kampen.

Jeg kan fortelle dere at våre mødre satte seg til motverge!

Når de skulle interneres i Svanviken, denne arbeidskolonien som Astrup-familien og pastorene opprettet for oss roma for hundre år siden, rømte de.

Som straff ble moren min sterilisert av misjonen.

Meg sendte de til et barnehjem på Rostad på Inderøy. De tok fra oss vår familie, vårt språk og våre sanger. Vi ble fortalt at det er noe som ikke stemmer med oss, at vi er en feil, som vi selv er skyld i.

La oss ikke ferdes i sirklene til kulturelle autonomier!

Vi behøver en koalisjon av marginaliserte, migranter og flyktninger!

Dagarbeidere, innhøstningsarbeidere, vaskehjelper, dagmammaer, eldreomsorgsarbeidere, sexarbeidere; organiser dere!

Som voksen har jeg kjempet mot tvangssteriliseringen.

Den dag i dag kjemper jeg for sannheten om rombefolkningen i Norge og Europa.

I hundrevis av år har vi bodd i samfunnets utkanter, som paria, som slaver og tjenere.

Kapitalistene i det 19. århundret, som her hos oss Astrup-familien, storbøndene, fabrikkeierne; alle brukte de billig arbeidskraft. Som «mindreverdig rase» som skulle oppdras til å bli nyttige samfunnsmedlemmer, trengte de ikke å betale oss roma.

Stortinget vedtok lover mot oss.

Vi var ment å bli utslettet.

Frem til på åttitallet ble den rasisitiske og kjønnsdiskriminerende biopolitikken mot oss roma systematisk legitimert og institusjonalisert av kirken og den såkalte «velferden», ved hjelp av vitenskap og særskilte lover.

For solidaritet med den prekære klassen!

Ut av leirene!

Vi behøver et Romanistan som sprenger alle murer!

Et Romanistan uten grenser!

Et Romanistan der land, vann og luft tilhører alle!

III. Den tredje agitatoren er en same fra Verdalsfjellene som under andre verdenskrig sluttet seg til den kommunistiske motstanden mot de tyske fascistene og Quisling-regjeringen.

Hans forfedre bodde i Norge før nybyggerne kom fra sør. I det 19. århundret, når hele landstrekninger i regionen ble kjøpt opp av kapitalister, ble det samtidig innført lover for assimilering av samene.

Lederne for et sameopprør i Kautokeino i 1852 ble halshugd, og hodene deres ble sendt til Oslo og konservert i Det Kongelige Frederiks Universitet. Først i 1997 oppnådde etterkommerne deres, med sametingspresidentens hjelp, at levningene ble frigitt til familiene, slik at de kunne bli begravd.

Talen til forkjemperen for den antifascistiske motstandsbevegelsen Borgere!

Siden Alta har vi i en lang prosess kjempet for våre politiske rettigheter.

Men hva kan Sametinget få utrettet mot interessene til internasjonale olje-, gruvedrifts- og fiskerikonserner?

Når 1 % eier all rikdommen, hvilken nytte har demokratiet da?

Jeg reiste meg mot Nazistene fordi jeg ikke lenger ville at raseideologien skulle bestemme over våre liv.

Jeg kjempet for frigjøring!

Som så mange andre arbeidere fra Lademoen sluttet jeg meg til kommunistene i Trondheim. Flere av oss ga våre liv i kampen mot fascismen i Spania. Da de tyske fascistene okkuperte Norge, gjennomførte vi sabotasjeaksjoner mot tvangsarbeidsleirene.

Vi organiserte flukten over grensen til Sverige for enkelte jugoslaver og russere. Mange av oss samer fra Verdalsfjellene gjorde dette.

I gestapoleiren på Falstad ble jeg torturert slik at jeg skulle angi andre motstandskjempere og hjelperne deres blant befolkningen.

Jeg overlevde nesten ikke.

Vi krever medbestemmelsesrett for alle når det gjelder utnyttelse av naturressursene!

Men den nye logikken gjør narr av menneskerettighetene til de fattige og de svake: Den selger «alle mot alle» som en kamp for frihet!

Vær våkne: Under dekke av kampen mot terror vokser den nye fascismen frem.

Etter krigen ble motstandskampen vår tiet i hjel.

Enkelte ble arrestert, beskyldt for å være spioner.

Først i fjor ble noen av motstandskjemperne våre hedret.

Læren om den norske kulturs overlegenhet og den kristne oppdragelsen har begrunnet assimilasjonspolitikken mot oss samer.

Slutt med den totale overvåkningen!

Bort med de private sikkerhetsfirmaene og leietroppene!

Målet var imidlertid alltid verdslig: Vi skulle ikke kunne gjøre territorialkrav på vårt eget land!

Stopp dronekrigen!

IV. Den siste talen holdes av en miljøaktivist.

Hun har de siste årene kjempet hardt for at moratoriet som forbyr oljeutvinning i Lofoten, blir forlenget. Kampen mellom fiskeindustrien, oljeindustrien og miljøvernerne dominerte valgkampen i 2013. Den nye regjeringskoalisjonen har lovet å beskytte Lofoten.

Aktivistens tale for en radikal økologisk dreining Jeg hilser dere, kjære venner, på språket til menneskene i dette nordlige landskapet.

Motstandskjemperen fra den andre verdenskrig har rett når han sier at fascismen er på vei tilbake.

Vi møter den midt i samfunnet: I de rasistiske parolene til de angivelig patriotiske partiene, i pamflettene til hatfylte ungdommer, i nynazisters angrep på migranter og roma over hele Europa.

For at fortidens kamper ikke skal ha vært forgjeves må vi innta en ny og mye mer radikal posisjon!

Den gamle logikken som setter mennesket i verdens midtpunkt, er for begrenset.

Dere kan ikke høre det, men jeg hilser steinene under våre føtter og fjellene i det fjerne, som steinene ble brutt fra. I mitt indre mottar jeg de skrikende svarene til fuglene, som blander seg med vindens hyl.

Den fossile kapitalismen har inngått en allianse med døden.

Vi trenger en radikal, en virkelig revolusjonær endring av perspektiv!

Med alltid mer ødeleggende metoder presser den de naturlige rikdommene ut av planeten.

Vi menneskelige innbyggere i Norge tilhører den uendelig lille prosentandelen av levende vesener som har en umiddelbar og direkte gevinst fra jordens ødeleggelse.

Med den planlagte oljeboringen i Arktis, Barentshavet og utenfor Lofoten setter vi de siste uberørte havområdene i fare.

Tror vi virkelig at denne raske profitten vil gjøre det mulig for etterkommerne våre å overleve økosystemets kollaps?

I fjor vant vi en etappeseier i kampen om Lofoten.

Men vi krever mer:

Bort fra antroposentrismen!

Innbyggerne i havene, i luften og på jorden er våre allierte.

Plantene og mineralene er våre kamerater!

La oss tenke oss revolusjonen fra perspektivet til sanden!

La oss skrive parolene på språket til havbunnen!

Stopp oljeutvinningen i Arktis!

La oss proklamere revolusjonen med tonene til den levende og livløse materien!

Jeg er enig med kameraten fra Thranitterbevegelsen i det 19. århundret; vi trenger en revolusjon, og det er vi som må starte den!

Jeg er enig med Romanistan-aktivisten om at vi ikke kan trekke oss tilbake i vår biotop, men at vi må inngå en koalisjon, og det ut over arten homo sapiens!
