American Ballet Theatre’s Spring 2019 season offers a celebration of Alexei Ratmansky’s unprecedented ten-year tenure as ABT Artist in Residence with performances of Harlequinade, Songs of Bukovina, On the Dnieper, Whipped Cream, The Sleeping Beauty and a new World Premiere. Ratmansky’s diverse repertoire of work has been lauded as “exemplifying classical style” (Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times) and “abounding in invention” (Apollinaire Scherr, The Financial Times).

Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky brings this lost classic to life with a bold new staging, inspired by the archival notes of Marius Petipa. Revel in pure comedic joy as Harlequin fights for his true love, Columbine, against her father’s wishes. Full of humor and delightful dancing, this tribute to the Italian commedia dell’arte tradition is a visual treat for the whole family.

Experience the magic of three one-act ballets choreographed by MacArthur Fellow Alexei Ratmanksy on the occasion of his 10th Anniversary as ABT Artist in Residence. Tales of youthful love and selfless devotion are colorfully brought to life in Songs of Bukovina, On the Dnieper, and a World Premiere featuring ABT’s versatile dancers. Leadership support for The Ratmansky Project has been provided by Avery and Andrew F. Barth, the Blavatnik Family Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton E. James, and The Ted and Mary Jo Shen Charitable Gift Fund. From the delicious imaginations of choreographer Alexei Ratmansky and pop surrealist artist Mark Ryden springs a whimsical adventure. A young boy overindulges at a Viennese pastry shop and falls into a delirium. He is ultimately rescued by Princess Praline when her delectable entourage of sweets comes to life.

Few choreographers have had as profound an impact on American dance as Twyla Tharp. In these three astounding one acts, classical ballet mixes with modern forms, demonstrating Tharp’s mastery of movement. This breadth of style is supported by the melodies of Brahms and Haydn, the compelling modern aesthetic of Philip Glass, and the playful rhythms of The Beach Boys. Cathy Martson’s Jane Eyre challenges the idea of a classic ballet heroine. After a difficult upbringing, Jane becomes the Governess for the mysterious Mr. Rochester, discovering the struggles of society’s expectations. A literary classic brought to life by Marston’s stirring choreography and an enthralling Victorian design, Jane Eyre shows that love can conquer any obstacle.

A dashing pirate’s love for a beautiful harem girl sets the scene for a thrilling treasure trove of love and drama—featuring one of the most famous pas de deux of the classical ballet repertoire. Boasting over 120 performers, Le Corsaire showcases explosive bravura dancing from ABT’s unbeatable roster of virtuoso dancers.

American Ballet Theatre’s performances of Le Corsaire are generously underwritten through an endowed gift from Irene and Fred Shen.

A WOMAN MUST CHOOSE BETWEEN THE TEMPTATIONS OF WEALTH AND THE PROMISE OF TRUE LOVE

From the ornate salons of Paris to the mysterious wilds of colonial Louisiana, Kenneth MacMillan’s dramatic masterwork weaves an affecting tale of romance, desire and treachery. Set to Massenet’s lush score and inspired by the classic novel Manon Lescaut, this engrossing ballet soars to theatrical heights.

This romantic fable of dreamlike transformation set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious score inspires awe and wonder.
