Mack Site: closer view to the Area

Mack Site: The Area One of the greatest benefits from living on an island - is a huge shore line. People usually are attracted by the waterfront and try to spend their time by the shore. Thats why my interest fell to the area and coastline of Mack site. Today this area is not widely used, because it mostly belongs to abandonned Mack industrial site (Old warehouse). As far, as the main industrial facilities of the beer factory have moved from the city center, this area becomes an open sheet for proposing some changes and bringing its closed territory back to the city and its inhabitants and guests.

Mack Site Study This site appeared to be a very interesting space. It has not only multi-layered history, but also very special and lucky climatical conditions - it is quite well protected from the wind, exposed to the Sun during the day, located almost in the very city center and surrounded by many landmarks, public spaces, attractions and cultural and recreational zones. The fact, that such a territory is occupied by brewery warehouse (that has basically moved out, and today all this site is a huge parking for cars) seems quite wrong. Thats why, taking in mind all the backgrounds of the site: climatical, geographical, cultural, historical, ĂŚsthetical and others, I decided to propose organizing a public space in this area. This place is definitielly very much about water, so thats why water became one of the cores and centers of my project.

Mack: Site study. The Land, taken from sea. The coast line has not always been the same. By ages, the coast line has spread towards the East, taking some land from the sea. The taken land mostly stands on sort of a sea platform (pictures 1 and 2), but what is interesting, that on the site one can find the remaining evidences of the old shore line, with stone finishing. (pictures 3 and 4)

Noizie from the city center, the building site and close road.

Quite place, only the sea and air conditioners are being heared Noiziest place: the road

Low intense noize from the sea and birds, sometimes ships

Soundscape map I tried to look at the sounds and noizes of the site. Of course, the noizest place appeared to be the road: lots of trafics, both cars and vehicles, running along, driving in and from the tunnel create a big amount of noize and the closer are is to the road, the noizier it is. Easter from the road, near the coast, the noize is not that strong already, and the dominant sound is sea and birds. The area along the coast, is also comparably quite: you can hear the sea, birds and a slight noize from buildings ventilating systems. Closer to Nerstranda, you already start getting noizes from the city center, Strandgata traffic and building sites nearby. The molo stands quite apart the shore and is mostly dominated by sea sounds and sometimes ships.

3D Model of the site’s topography Overall, the area appears to be quite steep and goes up to the top of the Tromsø Island. But the very mack site due to its artificial origin (filled land) is more flat.

Important buildings and public spaces in the Area

In this work I was concentrated on the site, that lays on the coast line, starting from Nerstranda Center and up to the Polaria, from the ex-Mack industrial site up to the Kunst Museet and the park around it. The reason for chosing this site was, that these public spaces are quite populat and one of the main sights in Tromsø, but accidently they appear to become isolated and teared apart from each other. So, while studying this area I came up with the idea of connecting them and creating a nice accessible and cosy public space on the coast line that happen to become semi-abandonned because of the industrial zone.

Scheme of water management design, the core of the concept

The Uncovered River As far, as it appeared, that the area just few decades ago was part of the sea, the water topic has become the theme and the core of the project. The main idea was to open the piped river, that used to run through Kunstforeningen park, lead it down to the sea, using as an ĂŚstheric artefact and resource for public space. So river project includes: 1. Opening river to the surface in the area of Kunstforeningen Park 2. Leading it through the road down to our site 3. One part as a river continuation goes down to the pond through a waterfall 4. Other part is channelled through the created public space and goes down the slope directly to the sea.

Tromsø aquarium and semi-outdoors swimming pool concept. Plan

Two main programs of the site are also related to water: 1) Tromsø aquarium with local arctic species of animals and plants, under water life and vegetation experience. Aquarium is supposed to be organized in the remaining part of warehouse. 2) Swimming pool. Semi-indoors, semi-outdoors. Experience of bathing and swimming in the landcape all year around.

Tromsø aquarium and semi-outdoors swimming pool concept. Sketch

The roof of the Aquarium (ex-warehouse) becomes a free public space, where you can get from the main entrance and go down by ledder. 3 meters above this public space - an outdoor swimming pool. The wall between them has huge window, so the swimmers can be seen from beyond.

Coast-line stepped cannal with floating bath tubes concept. Sketch

Important part of the coast - it has good climatical conditions and a great view to the mountains. It is proposed to develop this are, building a stepped wooden surface that protects from wind, but stil exposed to the Sun and keeps the great view. Another idea . to maintain floating bath tubes in the shore and a bilding on the backside - Dressing rooms, Sauna, Cash desk, Cafe and toilets - Infrastructure for the site. 1m 5m 10 m 50 m|

Tree bed (with 1 m deep soil storage) is also a 2 meter-lon bench from all 4 of its sides. Channel is going right trhough this construction, feeding the tree and creating fun.

Public space/park with little (10 cm. wide) channels that lead water and tree beds/benches, planted in chess order. You walk over the water, and it flows below. The old red fire station building is now - Chili kitchen restaurant and take away.

In the middle of the site an old little building of ex-firestation could be found

Restoring the Jetty and its public space functions.

The jetty. This jetty once was called “Wordls longest pub bacuse it was a popular public space for drinking bear. Today it became abandonned. So the jetty has to be restored, little red building on the edge . Mack bear shop, a low stepped shelter should be installed on the northern side of jetty (win protection in summer time), and, probably a symbolic door in the entrance - so that the jetty officially could be a bar.

Rollerskating, BMX and Skateboard park with ramps and rails

Space for skateboarding/roller skating/BMX. Asphalt area with special ramps, rails and other facilities, surrounded by green vegetation and separated by the wall (that remains from the old fire station building) from the main space for safety reasons.

It is absolutelly important to preserve cultural heritage, and why not to restore the planning of the garden in kunstforeningen park, as it used to be a centure ago, esp if it worked better. And opening back the river with the nice bridge over it. No big changes, keep the classic.
