Let the summer celebration begin

Vance Leavy

As we enter the summer season, it’s a great time to celebrate here in Athens. First let’s celebrate how nice it is to see a community that thrives because of so many generous folks. On page 9 of this issue, you will find photos from the Light the Night corporate breakfast held recently. Corporate Walk chair, Mark Williams summed his goal of serving by saying, “I am passionate about connecting corporations in the Athens community to unite together to raise awareness and funds to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). I serve and walk in memory of my father, Jimmy Williams. My goal is to prepare the way for “cancer” to be a word only learned from history books. Relentlessly, we must fight together to find a cure.” And opposite this page, the Athens Regional Foundation recently recognized folks in the community who see the tremendous benefit in having a top-notched health system, which is certainly something worth celebrating.

At UGA, it’s a great time to celebrate all the athletic programs for another year of success on the playing field and in the classroom. And if you were lucky enough to attend any of the NCAA Finals tennis over the last two weeks, then I know you will join me in celebrating all the folks who put in countless hours to make sure UGA and Athens remain the best host site for the NCAA Championships. It truly is remarkable how players from schools like Stanford, USC and UVA view Athens as the home to NCAA tennis. Of course, that has so much to do with the legendary Dan Magill whose passion and charisma for the collegiate game is exactly what has made it so huge. Bravo Coach Magill … you truly are the man! Also, in this issue of BI Athens, we are pumped to celebrate this year’s AthFest that hits downtown in the coming weeks. Our music guru, Daniel Peiken has done his best ‘cliff notes’ in the center spread (pages 6, 7). But really to comprehend the amount of bands that will be playing in Athens June 20-24, you must go to

www.athfest.com. Practically every bar/club in downtown has a full slate of acts for four days. And while of course we celebrate all the folks involved in pulling AthFest off, let’s not forget about all the current musicians who love to hone in their skills in the Classic City. Nor should we forget about the Athens Music pioneers who have made this town what it is in the music world. Without question, if you’re in town in few weeks, then spend the $20 on a wristband, so you have access to all the bells and whistles of AthFest. I assure you there will be plenty of celebrating going on downtown. Let’s face it, there’s no better time to celebrate than the summer. On page 11, we even have home-bodies covered with a great appetizer and cocktail from Speakeasy owner Patrick Anderson. Or you can venture out and enjoy Speakeasy in person. You definitely will not be disappointed.Yummy! Well, gotta run as it’s time to let the Summer Celebration begin … Cheers!

The GURU Jeff Dantzler

A trip down memory lane is always good for the soul

With the sun setting on another Georgia athletic season, and after a lifetime of love, 22 years in Athens, 19 campaigns as the play-by-play voice of Lady Dogs Basketball, 18 seasons of Bulldog Baseball, and a stint of 12 as the color man for Men’s Hoops it is time for a smiling stroll down a memory lane of winter, spring and early summer red and black memories of the last two-plus decades. • In the Spring of 1993, trailing UCLA 4-2 in the national semifinals of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships in Athens, the Bulldogs swept the doubles, capped by “The Richmond Rifle” Wade McGuire and Bobby Mariencheck’s victory at No. 1. Due to a heavy rainstorm, and after a lengthy delay – during which five points taverns lubricated and reloaded the Georgia faithful – the match moved indoors. The Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts capacity is right at 1,000. There were at least 2,500 in the building and the raucous crowd helped deliver this memorable triumph, which concluded at around 2:30 past midnight. • It was my second season of calling Lady Dog games, and Andy Landers’ squad made it to the Elite Eight. Things weren’t looking good against top-seeded Colorado. Down 11 with just over six minutes to go, Georgia erupted for a furious rally led by the incredible clutch shooting and defense of Kedra Holland. The Lady Dogs prevailed by three and embarked on the first of three final four trips over a five year stretch. • The following year, down 11 in the Elite Eight to top-seeded Louisiana Tech midway through the second half, Georgia erupted for another furious rally, paced by Saudia Roundtree’s 37 points, and won by 14, earning a second consecutive trip to the Final Four. • Behind a couple of near triple-doubles from Kelly Miller, the Lady Dogs rolled past Clemson and Iowa State to make it to the 1999 Final Four. It would be a grand year for Georgia athletics, as the Bulldogs captured national championships in Men’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s Swimming and Gymnastics – garnering rings of a dynamic quartet of head coaches: Manuel Diaz, Chris Haack, Jack Bauerle and Suzanne Yoculan. • After a 47-year drought, Georgia clinched the 2001 Southeastern Conference title, the program’s first since 1954. What followed

in the postseason was quite unforgettable. Roy Hobbs could not have performed in fiction as remarkably as Jeff Keppinger did at Foley Field. In an NCAA Regional elimination game against Georgia Southern, he hit for the cycle. The following day against Coastal Carolina, he went five-for-five with three homers, including the game-winning two-run shot with two out in the ninth. He would then lead the Bulldogs to the College World Series with a lights out performance against Florida State in the Super–Regional. Meanwhile at the adjacent Dan Magill Tennis Complex, Georgia won the national championship, while AllAmerican Matias Boeker won the singles and doubles title. • Later that summer, my close friend David Perno was named Georgia’s head baseball coach. It was one of the happiest happenings of my life, and in the years to come, my favorite memories would come with him at the helm. • After watching Georgia lose a bunch of times at Rupp Arena, Georgia beat Kentucky in 2002 in Lexington in Men’s Basketball. That was a special staff that had a family atmosphere, and that was a night I’ll never forget. • With unforgettable clutch homers from Bobby Felmy, Jason Jacobs and Clint Sammons, and a gutsy performance from Will Startup, Georgia bounced back from a 10-9 loss to Clemson – a game the Dogs led 9-2 – to overcome a 6-4 ninth inning deficit (when the baseballs came flying out of the bucket) to win 7-6 in 10. The following weekend, spurred by Johnathan Wyatt’s unforgettable round tripper, Georgia swept the Super-Regional over Tech on the Flats, becoming the first of eight teams that season to punch the ticket to Omaha and the College World Series. Standing on the diamond at 3:30 that Saturday afternoon, soaking it in, was one of the most surreal and gratifying moments I’ve ever enjoyed. • In early June 2005, waiting on my buddy Rob to get married, Georgia’s Men’s Golf team cruised to the national championship in Caves Valley, Maryland by nine strokes over second place Tech. Incredibly, all five Georgia golfers fired a 70. We rang the chapel bell that day. • Facing a total of five elimination games in the 2006 Regional and Super-Regional at Foley Field, the Bulldogs beat Florida State and

South Carolina to earn a third College World Series trip in six years. • Led by Big John Isner, Georgia’s powerhouse 2007 squad blistered the competition to win the 2007 national championship with an undefeated record. Only two teams lost to the Bulldogs 4-2. Georgia beat everyone else 4-1 or 4-0. • In 2008, Georgia won the SEC baseball championship in Week Nine of league play, the only team to do so prior to the final weekend under the current 30-game schedule. After hitting a brief slide, that included a stunning Athens Regional loss to David Lipscomb, Georgia stormed back to Omaha. The Bulldogs rolled through the loser’s bracket in the Regional, blasting Tech 8-0 and 18-6. Then in the Super, after splitting the first two with N.C. State, Georgia hung a nine-spot in the first and rolled past the Wolfpack 17-8 to earn another berth in the College World Series. In the eighth, with the crowd anticipating it would be his final Foley Field at bat, the great Gordon Beckham homered to break the school record and send the throng into a frenzy matched only by Keppinger’s game-winner seven seasons prior. Perno joined the likes of LSU icon Skip Bertman and Miami legend Ron Fraser in an elite group of three College World Series berths in their first seven years as a head coach. In Omaha, the Bulldogs pieced together unforgettable victories over Miami and Stanford. Georgia battled to the CWS Finals and came up one game shy of the whole enchilada. • From 2007-10, it was my true pleasure to call every game that Lady Dog star point guard Ashley Houts played. No Georgia athlete ever had more heart. • One year ago, with their backs against the wall, Georgia won three thrillers on the diamond in Birmingham to clinch a winning record and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Tragically, the amazingly brave Chance Veazey and Jonathan Taylor were paralyzed over a two year period. To see these two courageous young Bulldogs handle these awful accidents with such class and with so many smiles offers infinite perspective and inspiration. Vince Dooley used to always say, “the highs are never as high, as the lows are low.” The older one gets, the more that rings true. But it’s that unbreakable loyalty and love that makes those great triumphs simply unforgettable.

AthFest 2012 is coming upon us. This festival is the highlight of my year and it can be for you too. Some folks just don't get it, but I do. Grab some friends, but not too many or you won't be able to move freely from one venue to another. Put your schedule together but don't freak out if you change your plans, that's part of the fun. Put on some comfortable shoes and stick in your ear plugs. It's gonna get hot, it's gonna get crowded and it's gonna get loud. Make sure to drink lots of water in between your beers and wear a hat and/or sunscreen. Don't worry about trying not to sweat 'cause you already are. You can't be in two places at one time and being in three is even harder. If you see me running from one venue to another, please say 'hello', but don't slow me down. Buy an AthFest wristband and you will get into every one of these concerts for free. See you at the Rock Show! Check out www.AthensRockShow.com to watch more than 1700 of my videos and pictures of Athens bands. Below is the complete outside schedule and in bold is my list of the bands that I recommend that you see. There are more bands playing after 9 p.m. in the clubs every night but your wristband will get you in for free. If you see all of these bands you will have a smile on your face. Go to http://athfest.com/music-festival/schedule for the complete AthFest schedule. Come to Athens for the Bulldawgs and stay for the Rock’N’Roll. Chances are the person serving you sweet tea at lunch will be performing on a stage that night

I’ve become friends with Troy Aubrey through playing at the Melting Point. Troy mentioned it in passing so I decided to apply. I’m so excited to play this year! I’ve heard about it for years and never been in Athens during the summer to actually play. I can’t wait.

Athfest is just around the corner and if you’re as excited as I am you have already checked the lineup for this year. Someone new on the list is singer/ ZVUN^YP[LY ,TPS` /LHYU ,TPS` MYVT .YPMÄU .LVYNPH is a self-taught musician whose music is capturing the hearts of fans nationwide. This 22-year-old has an incredibly melodic voice that you must hear. It’s hard to choose my favorite song of hers because all of them are worth listening to. If I haven’t sold you, please read this interview with Emily. She is extremely charming and genuine and you will fall in love with this up and coming artist. >OLU KPK `V\ KLJPKL [V THRL T\ZPJ `V\Y JHYLLY& I’ve been pursuing music professionally and full-time for about a year now. Travis Ragsdale’s 411 on University of Georgia athletics By Travis Ragsdale

Tennis The 2012 tennis team had a great deal of promise when they opened up their campaign back in January. And that promise turned into a tangible bit of success as they reached a ranking of number two nationally prior to the start of the NCAA tournament. With Athens playing host this year, the Dawgs had hopes of capturing another NCAA title, their last coming in 2008. But it was not to be as Georgia fell to Pepperdine in the quarterfinals. But the loss was nothing to hang their heads about. Georgia was down and out multiple times throughout the match but continued to battle back and was able to bring the overall match score to 3-3. It then came down to senior Sadio Doumbia on court three who forced a third set but was unable to finish off his opponent. And so the Dawgs season ended there with a 3-4 loss. Several of the players on the team continued their season though by being invited to play in the individual singles tournament. Wil Spencer highlighted for Georgia making it to the round of 16. It was much a similar fate for the women’s team as they fell in the round of 16 to Duke. However, the individual tournament saw much more success for the women. Chelsey Gullickson accomplished an astonishing feat by becoming an 8-time All-American in her senior year. (4 times in singles and 4 times in doubles). She and her doubles partner Nadja Gilchrist had a nice run in the doubles tournament reaching the championship round before falling to the team from Stanford.

photo from georgiadogs.com

Golf The men’s golf season is not yet over as they have made it to NCAA Championships. Coach Haack and company reached the tournament after finishing fourth in regionals. Now, the Dawgs will match up with Central Florida and Iowa for the first 54-holes of stroke play. If the Dawgs are in the top-8 after that, they will then move into 54-holes of match play. The fact that the team even made the NCAA Championships is quite the accomplishment considering that the lineup is made up of one junior, three sophomores and a freshman; not a single senior. Even if they don’t win a national championship, the future is mighty bright for the men’s golf team. The tournament begins this week at the beautiful Rivera Club in Pacific Palisades, CA.The women’s golf team was not quite as fortunate. They did not perform as well as they had expected to and weren’t able to make it out of regionals. Still, two women’s golfers played well throughout the tournament and the season as a whole earning All-American honors. Emilie Burger earned the honor for the first time in her career but this was the 4th honor for senior Marta Silva Zamora who became just the second to become a four-time All-American in Georgia women’s golf history.

Softball After a heartbreaking loss in the super regionals, the Dawg’s season came to a close this past Sunday. After splitting the series 1-1 with Tennessee, a berth in the college world series came down to a deciding game three. After having their horns locked through five innings, the Dawgs broke through in the fifth with a run to take the lead. But the Vols rallied in their next at bat to score 2 runs. They were able to close the game out and advance on the 2-1 win. It was a heck of a season for the team as they finished the 2012 campaign with and overall record of 45-17. There will be plenty of post-season awards coming the way of many members of the team in the coming weeks.

Track and Field There is plenty to cheer about for the track and field teams of Georgia. Their post-season is still going on and lots of Dawgs are still competing. Both the 4x100-meter and 4x-400-meter relay teams punched their ticket to the NCAA finals by finishing in the top-12 in qualifiers. Senior Torrin Lawrence will be going for even more accolades tis post-season as he will be competing in the 400. In the field events, Hilenn James and Caleb Whitener will both be representing UGA in the shot put. Georgia also has representatives competing in the discus, javelin, pole vault, hammer throw and high jump. It would not be a far reach to expect these Bulldogs to have very successful events over the next week or so.

Baseball It was a tough season for the Diamond Dogs and that only continued as the Dawgs failed to receive a berth in an NCAA Regional. Their 31-26 overall record did not indicate how well they actually played throughout the season. Behind the good pitching of redshirt sophomore Alex Wood (7-3, 2.73 ERA), the Dawgs found themselves on the losing end of some close ball games throughout the year. Often times, it was the offense that sputtered and caused issues. Good news is that the high points of the offense will be back next year for the Dawgs. Freshman outfielder Hunter Cole led the team with seven home-runs and he’ll look to improve on that in the 2013 campaign. He’ll join junior Curt Powell who led the team with a .355 average. Couple those factors with some of the improvements that have been approved for Foley Field and the Diamond Dogs will be back in the NCAA Regionals and College World Series before we all know it. Alex Wood, Curt Powell, Hunter Cole and Kevin Ruiz were honored by the Southeastern Conference Tuesday as the league announced its All-SEC and Community Service teams for baseball.

Spotlight on Athens’ own Speakeasy By Katherine Parke One of my favorite restaurants in Athens is Speakeasy. I absolutely love the environment and the tapas and cocktails are always to die for. Patrick Anderson, owner and bartender of Speakeasy, and Chef Wes Chapman came up with a cocktail and an appetizer that would impress any guest at your next dinner party. I had the incredible opportunity to meet both of them and try these recipes. The cocktail Patrick came up with is called Caliente. Not only does it look pretty in the glass, it tastes so good. Chef Wes created the “Pimente” Cheese appetizer. This take on pimento cheese PZ HTHaPUN 0[ PZ WHJRLK ^P[O ÅH]VY I\[ PZ not heavy. They pair so well together. I had a great time getting to know Patrick and fell even more in love with Speakeasy. The people who work there genuinely love what they do and it comes out in the food and drinks they serve. So I recommend you try these recipes out either at your next summer soiree or with a visit to Speakeasy.

Patrick Anderson

Caliente Half 1 lime, cut into wedges and squeeze into the glass (leave the lime pieces in the glass). Put two slices of a jalapeno in the glass. Then add a ginger puree (Speakeasy makes this in house).* Muddle all these ingredients together. Get all the good juices out of the lime. Add ice, then add two ounces of tequila. Patrick recommends that you use Puro Verde Silver Organic Tequila. Then add soda water. *If you don’t have a ginger puree on hand then instead of using soda water add ginger ale. Finally shake it all up and enjoy!

“Pimente” Cheese 1 ½ cups of mayo 6 cups parmesan ¼ cup cider vinegar 3 jalapenos, diced Salt and pepper 3 green onions, chopped

Mix these ingredients all together and set aside. Fry a tortilla or use a crispy tortilla. If neither works for you, Wes recommends using tostadas. Take the cheese mixture and put it on top of the tortilla and broil it in the oven until the cheese starts to bubble. Finish it off with roasted red peppers and basil chiffonade.
