It’s time to spring forward Athenians

Hollywood came to Athens while Athens headed to the coast. Superstars Justin Timberlake, Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams and John Goodman were spotted all over the Classic City enjoying America’s best college town while shooting “Trouble With the Curve.” Superstars Alex Sams, Shooter Roberts, Greta Covington and Alison Abernathy were spotted all over the Golden Isles enjoying America’s best coastal town while taking spring break vacations. Social media and photographer Blane Marable (who shot our cover photo) came in handy this past week as we kept up with the movie stars in Athens from our smart phones at the beach. Now the students and spring break families are back in Athens ready to enjoy the joys of springtime here. There are lots of UGA sporting events to attend from glorious afternoons at Foley Field to the NCAAs at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex so grab your friends and families and get outside and support these teams. How fun is it going to be to enjoy the first spring on the rooftop at Georgia Theatre? Check out their incredible music schedule on

page 10. Janell shares a fun shopping guide on page 11 with some fun items that just got added to my wish list. Many of you might know Drew Hill’s son-in-law Charlie Thompson. I am so glad they filled me in on his endeavor, American Spirit Whiskey. What a coup that we have another fabulous product coming out of the south created by two UGA grads. Check out the spotlight on this on page 11. I had a great time recently riding out to Oconee to Gracewood Villa with some of the Athens Symphony committee to see where they are hosting an incredible Tuscan evening this spring. The spectacular estate of Geneele and Archie Crenshaw is the setting for the fundraiser on April 27. On page 8, I share with you my visit ‘in the kitchen’ with the group where we prepared some Italian recipes by co-chair John Knowlton and dished about the upcoming event. In closing, I want to say a prayer for peace for the families of the late Stuart Sligh and Furman Bisher. We recently lost role models in both the sixteen-year-old Stuart and ninety-three-year-old Mr. Bisher. Many lives were touched by them both and are better off for it. R.I.P.

The GURU Jeff Dantzler

These are high times for University of Georgia tennis

Athens will again serve as the host site of the NCAA Tennis Championships, as the men’s and women’s tournament will come home to Athens for two weeks in mid-to-late May. Georgia’s men’s and women’s teams are ranked in the top six nationally and they both have a chance to contend for the national championship later this spring at the magnificent facility named for the greatest Bulldog ever, the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. These are high times for Georgia tennis. One of Georgia’s greatest athletes and most prominent and proud alumni, John Isner has vaulted into the top ten of the world rankings. He’s had quite a first quarter of 2012. “Big John,” famously six-foot-nine, with the game’s most dominant serve and a powerful forehand, had a good showing winning twice at the year’s first major, the Australian Open. But over the past six weeks, tennis’ “Marathon Man” – the moniker well earned for his epic 70-68 fifth set victory over Nicholas Mahut at Wimbledon in 2010 – has soared to new heights. Isner led Georgia to the 2007 national championship, was a finalist in the singles tournament, was half of the 2005 NCAA Doubles Championship, and sits at the top of a who’s who of Georgia royalty with the most wins over any player in program history. Just as Mikael Pernfors brought so much glory and served as an incredible source of pride during his distinguished pro career, highlighted by a run to the 1986 French Open Final, Isner has tennis fans all around the world – and there are Georgia alumni in virtually every corner of the civilized world – barking loudly. The 26-year old native of Greensboro, N.C., who trains in Tampa, picked up the biggest win of his pro career to date in February, downing the greatest player there’s ever been, Roger Federer. On clay. In the master’s native Switzerland. Upon finding out about John’s incredible triumph, I immediately sent him a congratulatory text message and told him that he was

being lavished with praise on our afternoon radio show, which I cohost with my buddy Chris Brame. Humble John, just a passionate Bulldog fan, responded “That’s a $&*%^$* Bulldog effort, thanks JD, Go Dawgs!” His stellar play continued this past week at the Masters Series in beautiful Indian Wells, California. Isner fought his way into the semifinals, where he drew the world’s current No. 1 Novak Djokavic, winner of four of the last five grand slams – an incredible feat with Federer and fellow all-timer Rafael Nadal still at least near their primes. Isner pulled it off, downing Djokavic 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, becoming the first American to defeat a No. 1 player in the world in over four years. This incredible win came while Georgia’s standout baseball team was erupting for nine unearned runs in a 10-5 Saturday St. Patrick’s Day victory over Tennessee to clinch the series win (Georgia took the opener 4-0 Friday night). While calling the game, I was being kept up to date via the Foley Field Press Box through visual hand signals by none other than the great Manuel Diaz, a big baseball fan who was on hand to sing a stellar rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” for the Seventh Inning Stretch. When John clinched, the box went nuts. When Brame, who doubles as the P.A. voice of Foley Field announced the score between the innings, the capacity crowd gave Isner a standing ovation. Diaz is the best in the game, and his succession of Magill is a coaching equivalent of Mickey Mantle following the Yankee Clipper Joe DiMaggio. Greatness following greatness. He’s led the Bulldogs to four national championships and an incredible 11 NCAA Finals. So far this year, the Dogs have shown the stuff of champions. Georgia sits atop the Southeastern Conference standings with a perfect 4-0 league mark, courtesy of three consecutive 4-3 victories –

two of which were instant classics, one of those an all-timer. In the second conference meet of the year, Georgia and Florida were tied 3-3 in Gainesville, and in the decisive seventh match, at No. 1 Singles, All-American Wil Spencer trailed 5-1 in the third set. The Dogs weren’t just five and a half feet under, it was five feet 11 and a half inches. But Spencer battled and battled and then made a little history. Diaz told his star that if he completed the comeback, it would be a match that people would be talking about for a long, long time. Oh was he ever right. Spencer came all the way back to win, sending the Bulldogs into euphoria. The following Sunday in Athens, following a bit more mundane Friday 4-3 win over Mississippi State, Georgia was in big trouble against Ole Miss. After winning the doubles point (best of three, eightgame pro sets decide it), the Bulldogs lost at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. But Georgia roared back to win at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to claim yet another incredible conference triumph. Diaz’s response: “Fight! Fight! Fight!” Indeed the Dogs have shown tremendous heart and gumption – to go along with sizeable depth and talent. That’s quite a combination. A No. 3 ranking and that first place slot in the league are the early spoils. On the women’s side, Jeff Wallace is one of the country’s best. He’s guided the program to two national titles, and with 2010 NCAA singles champ Chelsea Gullickson headling the squad, he too could have another champion in the making. Georgia’s women are ranked sixth and sport a 3-1 conference record. It’s clear though, whether it’s Big John starring internationally as one of the world’s best, while representing his alma mater with extraordinary pride, or Diaz and Wallace continuing their great success, these are wonderful days for Georgia tennis.

Travis Ragsdale’s 411 on University of Georgia athletics By Travis Ragsdale

Baseball After receiving a clean sweep at the hands of UCLA, the Diamond Dogs have bounced back in the right way. With much of their season being defined by the lack of run production, a shift in the batting order led to an explosion of runs following the series against UCLA. It all came together following the most recent weekend series against Tennessee where they took both the Friday and Saturday game before getting shut out in the Sunday series finale. The weekend of the 23rd will find the team in Nashville to take on Vanderbilt. The Commodores are having a surprisingly down year in 2012 struggling to put runs on the scoreboard much like the Dawgs. Following that series, the team will return to Foley Field for a little out of conference fun with the first part of a home-and-home with Clemson on the 27th. SEC play is still in full force though with Kentucky rolling into town March 30 and 31 and April 1.

Gymnastics An easy win against NC State marked the end of the regular season for the Gym Dogs. Now, it’s championship season time. It begins on March 24 in Duluth at the Gwinnett Arena for the SEC Championship. This meet begins at 4 p.m. Kat Ding leads the team coming off her fourth allaround victory against NC State. But Ding isn’t head coach Jay Clark only weapon. After missing a meet against Michigan, Gina Nuccio and Shayla Worley were back in the lineup against NC State and will stay there for the SEC Championship. Their value on beam and the floor exercise cannot be understated as the run to a national championship quickly approaches.

Golf The surprising departure of Bryden Macpherson from Georgia has left Coach Chris Haack and the men’s golf team a bit depleted along the front line. Still, the team has been able to persevere and has posted some quality results in tournaments. Most recently, the team was in South Carolina for the Furman Invitational. Day one showed disappointing results as they shot a combined 10-over leaving them in 17th place. Day two was a different story as they carded a blistering 7under. Headed into the final day they were just 2-over. On Sunday, the squad shot an even par 288 finishing 5th in the tournament overall. On the 24th and 25th, the Dawgs won’t be far from home as they will be competing in the Linger Longer Invitational. They will then have a long break before heading down to the coast for the SEC Championship at Sea Island April 20-22.

Women’s Basketball The women’s basketball team fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament as a number 4 seed to Marist, a twelfth seed. Anne-Marie Armstrong got in foul trouble early and was only able to gather six points in only 20 minutes of play. Khaalidah Miller led the Lady Dawgs with 21. Meredith Mitchell ended her career at Georgia with 15 points. She is the only starter that won’t be returning to the team next season.

So far so good for Manny Diaz and the men’s tennis team. In fact, the guys have moved up in the most recent ITA national rankings from number four to number three. It’s been an interesting year for the tennis team as there hasn’t been much consistency from the singles positions. Some matches it’s the bottom of the lineup carrying the team, other matches it’s the top. One thing that has remained constant is the doubles play. The Dawgs are having no trouble getting off to a good start in each match by capturing the doubles point early on. Undefeated thus far in the SEC, they have an out of conference battle on the 21st against number 2 in the country Ohio State at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. SEC play starts back up after that on the 23rd with a home match against Arkansas. Then they will travel to Baton Rouge for a battle with LSU on the 25th. To round out March, the guys will be back in Athens for a match against Kentucky on the 30th at 5 p.m.

Swimmming and Diving The Lady Bulldogs swimming and diving team has ended their season with a second place finish at the NCAA Championship. This marks the second year in a row that they have finished in second place and seventh time overall. The team finished the weekend with a total of 366 points, second only to Cal’s 412.5. Wendy Trott missed winning the 1,650 freestyle for the fourth time in a row by a measly .2 seconds. The team finished out the meet coming in third in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.56-the second best time in Georgia history. 6

In the kitchen at GRACEWOOD VILLA Recently, I had the pleasure of getting a sneak preview of ‘Gracewood Villa,’ the spectacular estate of Geneele and Archie Crenshaw and the setting for the upcoming benefit gala for The Athens Symphony. An added bonus was the chance to enjoy some Tuscan fare created by gala co-chair and excellent cook John Knowlton. Committee members Suzanne King and Caroline Kinney gathered with John and Geneele in her kitchen and we talked about their efforts to support the Symphony’s mission to enhance the cultural experiences of our community with four performances each year free of charge. This gift to the community is made possible with the generous support of individuals and organizations and of course this fundraiser. The committee is excited about ‘An Evening in a Tuscan Garden’ set for April 27. “People won’t believe the marvelous home and grounds of the Crenshaw’s Italian villa, right in our back yard,” said Caroline. John added, “This party will be over the top with the incredible setting, Italian food and wine, and the crowd. Don’t miss this opportunity to support the Symphony and have a wonderful evening! I can’t wait!” We can’t wait either! In the meantime, John shared recipes for a pasta dish and tiramisu pie that is just a hint of the fabulous food that will be served at the gala. Visit guide2athens website for the Tiramisu Pie recipe and to see more of the photo shoot. Bon appetit- Cheri Leavy

John’s Italian Pasta Sauce (for Slow Cooker) This is a spicy, chunky healthy sauce for pasta. It is always a hit and tastes very fresh. 1 medium onion chopped 2 cups fresh mushrooms chopped 2 cloves garlic chopped finely 1 red bell pepper chopped 1 green bell pepper chopped 8 yellow/8 zucchini squash sliced 6-8 carrots chopped finely Large can of diced tomatoes Small can of tomato paste Small can of tomato sauce 1 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt (to taste) ½ tsp. red pepper 1 Tbs. Italian seasonings 1 lb. ground beef (optional) 1 lb. Italian sausage (optional)

John uses a food processor and chops the onion, carrots and mushrooms. He dices the peppers and slices the squash. Throw all into the slow cooker and add seasonings. Sometimes he adds ground beef, sometimes Italian sausage but it is good as a vegetarian sauce. If using meat he browns it with the onion and then adds to the pot. Stir well, cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours. 8

By Daniel Peiken Yes, it was another great week of music in Athens, Georgia and I saw tons of it. J Roddy Walston and the Business held a rowdy meeting at the 40 Watt Club. Todd McBride tried his best to convince a bunch of sorority girls that he doesn't know the words to 'Wagon Wheel' and has never even heard of it. Hotchacha rolled on the Caledonia Lounge floor making this show the third time in three shows that she did this, you should have been there.
