Being one of the last classes to graduate from the University of Georgia under the quarter system (rather than semester), I still have a hard time grasping the concept of UGA ‘s school year ending in early May. Nonetheless that’s where we find ourselves and what an incredible time it is for these seniors who will soon bid farewell to the greatest four (or so) years of their lives. While that’s both exciting and scary all wrapped-up in one, the memories that the Class of 2012 have made during their tenure at Georgia will most assuredly last their entire lives. Here at BI Athens, graduation will be bittersweet as we say goodbye to two amazing gals who have helped our publication immensely. Janell Niederriter and Ashley Hanna have been a real treat to work with because they share Cheri and my desire to do things the right way. And even better, they have thrived in the publishing business where assignments don’t always work out as originally planned. Janell and Ashley never panicked when hiccups arose instead they pivoted and figured out how to complete the task at hand by deadline. For these reasons, there’s no doubt that the company that lands these two will certainly be gaining amazing employees. In this issue, our crew of interns gathered a handful of profiles from the University of Georgia Class of 2012. I love

the fact that UGA football and the awesome food found in Athens led the way as what these soon to be graduates regarded as their most memorable moments at Georgia. The Bulldogs beating Florida this last season was mentioned the most as the cherry on top for these seniors. Believe me, I get that 100% because during my five football seasons as a UGA student we never beat Florida or Tennessee. That’s right, a not so perfect 0-10. The moral of the story is to cherish every win by the Bulldogs because much like life, there are no guarantees. However just writing about this, certainly makes me want something special for the Class of 2013. Imagine what it would be like for those graduates to say they beat the terrible Gators during both their junior and senior years. It would be quite memorable as the last senior class to claim that goes all the way back in time to 1989. Oops, sorry for my football digression. Funny how easy that can happen sometimes. Seriously, we all here at BI wish the very best for the Class of 2012. Our parting advice to them is to find something you love for your next step in life. It may be getting a job; it may be a year on the slopes or backpacking throughout Europe. But also remember that you are still young so don’t let the pressures of your future get the best

of you. Carpe Diem … UGA’s Class of 2012. Please enjoy the rest of this issue of BI Athens. And please do your best to get out to the UGA Golf Course this week to support the Nationwide Tour’s Stadion Classic. During the day, viewers can watch some of the world’s best golfers try their hand at our university’s demanding course. And at night, music lovers should certainly be able to find some good tunes throughout the week at the 19th Hole Music Series at The Melting Point. Also, I encourage everyone to get out to Foley Field this weekend for the Diamond Dogs series versus Auburn. It’s been a battle this season for Coach Perno and crew, but they continue to scratch and claw towards earning berths to the post season. Taking two from the Tigers would certainly go a long way towards that. Finally, I hope everyone is making plans for the tennis NCAA Finals that will be returning to Athens in a few weeks. It’s amazing what the hometown support means to both our UGA teams. And in case you’ve missed it, but both squads have the firepower to make a run at a title. We’ll have tons of coverage on the NCAAs in our next issue. Gotta run now. Again, Godspeed to the Class of 2012.

Diamond Dogs: In April survive, in May thrive
With the final month of the regular season getting underway, Georgia is in position to make a run at the postseason with a strong close to the regular season. In April, survive. In May, thrive. Playing the most treacherous stretch of the schedule in April, the Bulldogs managed to do just that. Though Georgia certainly would have liked to have chalked up several more victories, the Bulldogs did enough to be in position to strike in May. In April Southeastern Conference play, the Bulldogs avoided sweeps at three of the toughest places in the country to play – Arkansas, Florida and LSU – and Georgia took two of three from Ole Miss. Up next is a three game set with surging Auburn at Foley Field. The Bulldogs then host two-time defending national champion South Carolina before closing out the regular season at Alabama. There are two mid-week games in May, at Tech and at home with East Tennessee State. Georgia heads into the final month of the campaign with an overall record of 25-20 and 9-12 SEC mark. Winning all three May league series (at least six wins) and (minimum) splitting the two with Tech and East Tennessee would get Georgia to .500 in league play and mean a minimum of 32-24 for a final regular season record. This would get the Bulldogs into an NCAA Regional most assuredly, no matter what happens in the SEC Tournament, which will feature 10 teams this season. A berth in a Regional would mark yet another first for the program under the direction of 11th-year head coach David Perno, who has guided the Bulldogs to three College World Series, a pair of SEC championships and six of the school’s 11 all-time NCAA Tournament appearances. It would mark the
first time in program history that the Bulldogs would make four NCAA Regionals in a five year stretch. So much for the conjecture. The Bulldogs record the rest of the way could obviously be anywhere between 0-11/0-9 and 11-0/9-0. The key is that the Bulldogs are in position to strike. In a season that has been littered with tough luck from injuries and the weather, Georgia has been fighting an uphill battle for much of the campaign. Headlining the list of injury woes is closer Tyler Maloof. Amongst the nation’s saves leaders a year ago with 18, an injured shoulder has kept him out for the year. Headling the weather woes is a rain cloud that seems to have followed Georgia. The Bulldogs have had a rain delay or rain out in five of seven SEC weekends, which on a couple of occasions, has cost Georgia wins due to a bullpen that had to be called upon earlier than normal, leading to a tough-to-swallow trickle down effect. But Perno has maintained his optimism in this team - the tough times making the Dogs more resilient. That was most evident the last time the Bulldogs took the field. Playing in Baton Rouge in front of college baseball’s most boisterous and raucous crowd, against a program that has simply been America’s best over the past quarter-century, Georgia was in a bad way. LSU hit go-ahead home runs in the bottom of the eight inning in both the Friday and Saturday night games to erase deficits and roar back to win. Heading into the Sunday finale, the Bulldogs had dropped six of their last seven games. Four of the losses were by one run (including a 16-inning 3-2 Friday night loss at Florida the week prior), and the Bulldogs had a lead in each of the half-dozen setbacks.
Ace veteran starters Alex Wood, who has had a remarkable season, and Michael Pallazzone, who had won his last two starts, had no decisions in the first two affairs. Wood is 5-1, and could well be 11-0. Pallazzone had to leave the Saturday game with back spasms. The bullpen couldn’t hold a 5-4 lead through seven and a half Friday or a 4-2 lead through seven and a half Saturday. Now with these two starters on the hill, Georgia can beat anyone in the country. Sundays have been a different story. Heading into Game Three in Baton Rouge, the Bulldogs had dropped eight straight weekend series finales. But that Sunday was a day for the Bulldogs to shine. Headlined by a slew of standout freshman performers, including Justin Bryan, who slugged two homers, Hunter Cole, who had three hits and a great defensive play, Luke Crumley, who allowed two earned runs in four innings, and Jay Swinford, who pitched three shutout frames, the Bulldogs again had a lead headed to the late innings. Up 5-3, Georgia got out of the dreaded eighth, as senior Chase Hawkins set the Tigers down in order. In the ninth, Hawkins retired one and gave up a hit, giving way to Earl Daniels. The redshirt junior struck out the first batter he faced then gave up back-to-back walks. The bases were loaded with two outs and the nation’s leading hitter at the plate. LSU’s Raph Rhymes was leading the nation in hitting with an astounding .507 average coming in. Daniels fell behind in the count 3-1, but came back to strike him out, closing out a thrilling victory that got the Bulldogs over so many humps. The travel home was much happier, and with no midweek games while final examinations are going on, the team can catch its breath and get healthy, rested and focused for what has the potential to be a May to remember.

Baseball Over the hump of the hardest stretch of the season, the Diamond Dogs are now on the downslope of the 2012 campaign. But that difficult stretch definitely hit the overall and SEC record hard. A series in Gainesville against the number one ranked Gators saw the Dawgs escape with a Saturday win. After getting out to early leads in the Friday and Sunday games, this was difficult to stomach. The Friday game in particular proved to be a heartbreaker after letting the winning run come home in the 16th inning on a throwing error. There wasn’t much down time for the team to think about this though as they soon found themselves in a battle with Georgia Tech at Turner Field less than a week later. Once again, the Dawgs got out to a hot start on the Jackets but were unable to hold onto the lead and dropped that contest 4-3. No rest for the weary though as they were most recently in Baton Rouge for a three game SEC set with LSU. The 4th ranked Tigers took the Friday contest 6-5 and the Saturday 8-4. However, on the back of a pair of home runs by Justin Bryan on Sunday, the Dawgs were able to capture the series closer. It’s less than a month now until the SEC tournament and the Dawgs have three more SEC series to strengthen their seeding for the tournament. First, a home series against Auburn May 4, 5 and 6. There’s the possibility for a little payback as the Dawgs will travel to Tech on May 9 for a little mid-week action. Then it’s back home again for a three game set with the powerhouse Gamecocks from South Carolina
Softball The softball team found more success against the LSU Tigers on their recent trip to the Bayou country. They were able to edge the Tigers in a 15 inning contest of Friday night behind the right arm of Erin Arevalo. She went all 15 innings for the Dawgs allowing only one hit and no runs. She actually had a no-hitter all the way until the 10th. This came as no surprise to those who follow the softball team regularly as that win moved Arevalo to 20-5 overall on the year. The Dawgs took the Saturday game comfortably with a 6-1 but fell short in a 1-0 loss on Sunday. Georgia has a double-header against Arkansas on Saturday May 5 and then finishes up the regular season on Sunday against Arkansas. The SEC tournament begins on May 10 in Tuscaloosa. Heading into the final stretch of the year, the Dawgs are ranked 12th in the country.
Tennis The men’s tennis team has done it again. They are now the SEC champions for the 34th time, an unbelievable achievement. Being the second seed in the tournament Georgia received a first round bye. In the quarterfinals, they beat Auburn handedly by a 4-0 score. The semis proved to be challenge with a very good Mississippi State. It came down to the wire with Wil Spencer being the last man standing on the court for Georgia with the match tied 3-3. Spencer was able to pull out the win in the third set and sent the Dawgs for the finals against 6th ranked Kentucky. Kentucky beat the Dawgs earlier in the year in an incredible battle in Athens. It was payback time for Georgia this go-round as the team came out on fire and smashed Kentucky in a determined fashion to win 4-1. Following the SEC tournament, the team rose in the ITA polls all the way to 2nd; this ranking will be invaluable for seeding purposes in the NCAA tournament. Wil Spencer and KU Singh both were named to the All-SEC first team while Ignacio Taboada and Sadio Doumbia were named to the second team. Four-time SEC Freshman of the Week Nathan Pasha was named to the All-SEC Freshman team. The women’s team was not as lucky in the quest for an SEC title as they fell to Florida in the finals 4-1. The NCAA Championships begin in Athens on May 18 for the men and May 17 for the women.
Golf The 25th ranked men’s golf team finished fourth at Sea Island in the SEC tournament. The Dawgs held the second spot for most of the weekend but slipped on Sunday. Keith Mitchell shot a 1-over 71 and came in 10th in the individual tournament shooting an ever-par 210 for the weekend. Georgia has a break before hosting a NCAA regional on May 17-19. The Dawgs will need to place in the top 5 to advance to the NCAA Championships in Pacific Palisades, CA, May 29-June 3. The women’s team had a similar result in their SEC tournament. They also fell back in the race on Sunday after experiencing some gusty winds that made any scoring difficult. Marta Silva Zamora had her seventh top-ten finish in ten post-season events as she finished fifth with a 10-over 226 for the weekend. The women will now wait to hear where they will play their regional. They could wind up in State College, PA; Columbus, OH; or Denver Colorado. Play at one of those locations will begin May 10.
Gymnastics Kat Ding ended her UGA career on a high note but for the 2012 season ended in disappointment for the Gym Dogs team. Ding won the NCAA Individual titles on both the uneven bars and floor exercise at the NCAA Championships at Gwinnett Arena. Ding performed at her best when the pressure was greatest posting career highs in both events with a 9.9875 on bars and 9.95 on the floor exercise. But for the team, there wasn’t as much good news as they placed fifth in the NCAA semi-final after having to deal with two falls on the beam. However, one thing that we know is true of the Gym Dogs is that they will be there next year; they always are. And better results await them.
