Great to be back in Athens for all it’s happenings

Welcome back to everyone in Athens. Whether you are a UGA student or Athens professional, the holiday break is finally officially over. While it’s always great to step away from the daily hustle and bustle of studying or the functions that come with a job, it is nice to get back to some routines that don’t involve family/friend outings, Christmas music and egg nog. For those of us at BI, the new year means we switch from statewide football and fan coverage to concentrating on all the happenings in Athens during second semester. This is a change that both Cheri and I welcome. Nothing against our football program and its loyal fans, but producing a new issue weekly for three straight months is a huge grind. Don’t get me wrong following the Dawgs week in and week out is a blast, but from a journalistic standpoint the content is pretty much the same for each issue, other than the next opponent on the schedule. In BI Athens, the dozen plus UGA sports and numerous cultural happenings in Athens make the subject matter endless. And during our publication cycle of BI Athens (Jan-May), Cheri and I

have more time to work with our handful of interns, which is a real treat as she is a former high school teacher and I was a long-time camp supervisor at Athens Y Camp. And like in any situation, when you have good folks, the task at hand is always more enjoyable. And wow do we ever have some impressive interns this go around. On the lifestyle front, Cheri is beaming with joy about having Ashley Hanna, Janell Niederriter and Pierce Persons on board. Not only does each of these young ladies do what they say they’re going to do, their vast interests will keep our pages popping in the coming months. In this issue on page 10, Janell gets the new year off to a good start with some excellent resolutions worth your consideration. In fact, the resolution offered by Dr. Ken Cook is one I need to work on immediately as I’m looking down at my laptop while banging this column out. Oops, it is no wonder that I have to go see Dr. Cook regularly. And on page 11, Pierce shows off her love of fashion by giving our readers several choices on

how to spice up their winter look from local shops. For the sports enthusiasts, intern Travis Ragsdale (page 8) gives a quick-hitting update on UGA basketball, gymnastics and swimming and diving. Our biggest goal with our sports coverage this year will be to get as many Athenians to support our athletes by attending as many competitions as possible. I went to the gymnastics meet and men’s basketball game this past weekend and it’s always fun to see how many families these events draw. Finally, no issue of BI would be complete without some fan photos so all our readers can hopefully find someone they know. My shots from the two sports events can be found on page 9. And on pages 6 and 7, Pierce pulled together various Debutante Balls that happened over the holiday break. There’s nothing like seeing young people having fun. Let’s admit it … being around UGA students is what keeps the vibe of Athens so fresh. We look forward to capturing it for you in the coming months.

By Cheri Leavy With all the New Year’s resolutions being tossed around, I decided smaller portions might help with those goals! Full disclosure, I really just love appetizers! Most of these starters would not be on a suggested diet but they sure are good. Here is my list of top ten appetizers at the moment in Athens. What are your favorites?

DePalma’s Italian Cafe

1. Anyone in Athens knows the best app in town...DePalma’s Italian Cafe’s breadsticks. They are made from scratch with dough braided with spinach and onion or meatball and onion, baked with mozzarella. 2. Speakeasy’s spinach dip is a hit with co-eds and probably their best seller. Their entire menu is tapas- a selection of spectacular small dishes. 3. I crave East West Bistro’s sweet potato chips and truffle blue cheese dip but I decided to feature their flatbread of house made na’an topped with a sesame-thyme spread, pickled red onions, arugula and feta.

Flight Tapas

Big City Bread Cafe

Locos

4. A starter that stays on the menu at Five and Ten is the pimento cheese and pickled vegetables and it starts many of our meals. It is fun to get a variety of the veggies from cauliflower to okra. Oven fresh pita chips come with the spread. 5. I loved Harry Bissetts oyster appetizers and not much has changed with NONA in its location. It really is New Orleans N Athens. Get the Bienville baked oysters topped with mushroom and shrimp béchamel.

Big City Bread Va

6. Icy Blue P.E.I. mussels sautéed with garlic, shallots, tomatoes, fresh herbs, lemon, white wine and butter...are you drooling yet? Big City Bread Cafe has an excellent dinner menu. This is my favorite starter to share there. 7. Melting Point’s chef put together a fabulous menu that is more upscale than bar food so don’t be deceived that live music starts after dinner! I like their crabcakes. 8. Can you do a list of snacks and not include Locos wings? I think not. They have roasted wings now that are great and healthier. I still love a mix of hot wings and teriyaki wings. 9. You might not realize the gem that is in our backyard that has great food. Redfearn Grille at Holiday Inn downtown. Their bruschetta is delicious!

East West Bistro

10. And last but certainly not least, Flight’s Sea Flight takes me to coast in downtown Athens. It is three small dishes...tuna tartare with wasabi vinaigrette and a crab cake with citrus remoulade and seared scallops with truffle cream risotto. I die! D I N I N G

The GURU

Bounty of glory sure to come to Good Ole’ UGA

Jeff Dantzler

Football makes the world of college athletics go ‘round, but we are coming up on the busiest time of the year. Over the next six weeks, virtually every sport will be in action. For decades, Georgia has fielded one of America’s premier overall athletic programs, and the winter and spring offer plenty of promise for the usual contenders for the highest of Southeastern Conference and national honors. Baseball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, golf, track, softball, you name it, high hopes and expectations abound in Athens. Here are just a few quick hitters of what to look for over the next six months: Hardcore Hardwood

Hall of Fame coach Andy Landers has an excellent squad that is shaping up as one of the SEC’s best. This is the most explosive Georgia team in years, and in his 33rd season at the Lady Bulldogs helm, the passion still burns as Landers aims to take the program from very good back to the elite. On the men’s side, attrition hit Georgia, like many major programs. The Bulldogs first three SEC games are arguably the toughest in the league. Third year coach Mark Fox has some young talent and veterans that must continue to gel for the Dogs to contend for a winning record in the league. Gym Dogs in the Hunt

In his third season as Georgia’s head coach, Jay Clark has assembled the program’s best team since the incredible run of five consecutive national championships. Could this squad deliver Georgia’s 11th gymnastics national title? They’ll certainly be in the hunt. Ruling the Pool

The incomparable Jack Bauerle, the best in the business,

has extremely strong squads on the women’s and men’s side. Georgia’s women have won 76 consecutive home meets, equaling the school record set by the men’s tennis team, coached by the greatest Bulldog ever Dan Magill, in the 1970s. Bauerle has led Georgia to four national championships, was the head coach of the 2008 United States Women’s Swimming Team for the Beijing Olympics, and is in several Halls of Fame. On the Links

Under the watch of Chris Haack, Georgia has won two national championships, seven SEC crowns and twice been national runner-up. Last year, both Russell Henley and Harris English won Nationwide Tour events and the Bulldogs made it to the championship round of the NCAA championships. It will be tough to repeat such a year, but this powerhouse program reloads. Two former Georgia greats helped usher in the new PGA season at the Tournament of Champions. Both Chris Kirk and Bubba Watson were winners on tour last season and earned the perk and privilege of playing in the cut-free, 27-player field, season tee off event in Maui. No cut, last place check for around $58-K. . . in Maui. . .way to go guys! NCAAs Come Home

Back home at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, the NCAA Championships are back in May. Manuel Diaz and Jeff Wallace both have stellar squads who should be right in the mix contending for the big prize. Diaz, the country’s best, succeeding Magill has been a Dimaggio-to-Mantle-esque seamless transfer of domination. The Bulldogs are aiming for a seventh national championship. Wallace has done a tremendous job with the women’s program, and if Georgia could pull off the double, then both coaches would have led Georgia to national champi-

onships in three different decades. Can I get a “How ‘Bout Them Dawgs?!?!?!” Wallace son Jarryd has been a great source of inspiration. An avid runner his entire life, due to a rare condition and surgical complications, his leg had to be amputated from the knee down. But Jarryd, with a prosthetic attached at the knee, has become one of the world’s most successful runners, winning the Para-Pan Games 100-yard dash and sure to be headlining Team USA at the Paralympic Games in England this Summer. Fun at Foley

David Perno has done amazing things with Georgia’s baseball program, leading the Bulldogs to six of the program’s 11 alltime NCAA tournament appearances. Last season, driven by the strength and bravery displayed by Jonathan Taylor and Chance Veazey, Georgia fought through the nation’s toughest schedule, won three games at the SEC Tournament and two in the Corvallis NCAA Regional. The Bulldogs return a slew of talent in the field, at the plate and on the mound, while welcoming in an outstanding recruiting class. The Dogs figure to be right in the thick of the rugged SEC race and are dreaming big for another magic carpet ride in June. Opening day is February 17th, as Presbyterian comes to Athens for the first of 37 games at Foley Field this season. I can’t wait. There’s nothing like fall Saturday’s in Athens, but when the calendar flips over, things get really busy. So whatever, whoever and wherever the Dogs are playing this winter and spring, an incredible collection of coaches of outstanding student-athletes figure to once again heap a bounty of glory on Good Ole’ UGA!

As the new semester begins, UGA athletics is in full force By Travis Ragsdale

Gymnastics The perennial powerhouse Gym Dawgs are back at it again with another top-10 ranking to start out the season. They’ve already taken out number 20 Denver in a home meet. The effort was led by junior Noel Couch who won her first all-around with a score of 39.275. Next, the Gym Dogs will travel to the state of Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers on Jan. 13 and 20 to open up the SEC portion of their schedule. Those meets will be at 8:30 p.m.. and 8 p.m. respectively; they can both be seen on TV as well. Be sure to check local listings to support the Gym Dogs. The Gym Dogs host LSU on Jan. 28, 4 p.m in Stegman.

Men’s Basketball Thus far through the 2011-2012 season the Dawgs have had an up and down year. They rattled off five wins in a row over the holidays before losing to Alabama this past Saturday. On Tuesday the 10th, the Dawgs will travel to Gainesville to take on the Gators in what is sure to be a tough test. It will be even tougher without the sophomore Marcus Thornton who is currently nursing a knee injury. Then on the 14th, Coach Fox and the Dawgs will travel to Vandy to take on the Commodores which is always a battle in Nashville. The Dawgs will be back in Athens to take on Tennessee on the 18th at 8 p.m. It’s a very intimidating start for the Hoop Dawgs to start SEC play but it will provide an opportunity for them to prove their snuff against tough competition.

Women’s Basketball The Lady Dawgs have gotten off to a brilliant start this season posting a 13-3 record to this point. Led by Jasmine Hassell, the they have already opened up SEC play by posting a win against Arkansas, a tough loss at the hands of Tennessee in Knoxville and a road win at Auburn. Coming up, Andy Landers and company host the Florida Gators on Thursday the 12th. They then travel to Starkville, MS for a battle with the other Bulldogs on Sunday the 15th. The Dawgs will then be back home to take on the Kentucky Wildcats on the 19th at 7 p.m. And finally they will have to travel back to Mississippi to take on Ole Miss on the 22nd.

Swimming and Diving The UGA swimming and diving teams resumed the dual-meet portion of their schedule recently and will return to Athens on Friday the 20th against South Carolina at 4 p.m. and Saturday the 21st for a meet against Tennessee at 2 p.m. The women swimming and diving team were the top ranked in the country before losing a meet at Texas this last weekeend. They are an incredible 52-2 over their last 54 meets. Wendy Trott leads the team with the country’s best times in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle. Meanwhile, the men aren’t doing so bad themselves possessing a top ten national ranking. They will also be in action against South Carolina on the 20th and Tennessee on the 21st. Be sure to check out these teams over at the Ramsey Center over the next several weeks.

New Year, New You Athens! By Janell Niederriter

With the help of some of Athens’ experts on health and fitness, I have come up with a selection of New Year’s Resolutions that will be easy and beneficial to include on your own list. New Year, New You Athens! 1. Treat yourself once in a while! Everyone loves a good massage, but did you know that they actually have great health benefits? Urban Sanctuary offers a Neck Massage to relieve tension from traveling or a bad nights sleep, a Headache Massage for migraines and sinus pains, as well as a Sports Massage to recover injured muscles. 2. Find your inner strength! Pilates is the perfect way to strengthen your core, improve your flexibility and intensify your mindbody focus. Try out the fully equipped Classical Pilates Facility at Studio Athens.

3. Make work less stressful! Dr. Ken Cook, licensed practitioner and owner of Chiropractic Works, suggests getting up every 20 minutes to stretch if you work at a desk. Buy a chair that fits you correctly so that your back touches the chair and your feet are on the floor with knees at a 90-degree angle. Also, avoid looking down at your computer screen. It should be at eye level.

Go for less resolutions and more revolution. Leaping out of bed each morning with the intention to be fitter isn’t quite enough. To achieve your goals you must create and implement YOUR progressive plan. By having a progressive plan conducive to your resources, your schedule, and your potential barriers, accountability increases along with success.”

4. Keep your skin looking and feeling healthy! Mint Hair Boutique offers various skin treatments. Their Microdermabrasion Facial reverses the signs of acne, aging and sun damage. 5. Change up your hairstyle! You’d be surprised how a simple cut, a new color or a just changing your part can dramatically change your look. DRee & Company has a salon full of expert stylists ready to help you find the perfect do for you. 6. Challenge yourself! Jerome Biggers, certified personal trainer and founder of Couture Bodies says, “Challenge yourself as 2011 is on the shelf... on its way to collecting dust.

7. Try something new for a change! Pick up a copy of Guide2Athens little black book and see how many restaurants, stores, entertainment & unique venues you have yet to visit. It’s a new year, so you have an excuse to branch out from your usual Athens’ spots.

As the cold winter weather sets in, staying warm becomes a top priority. We quickly say goodbye to our blue jean shorts and tank tops only to replace them with skinny jeans and jackets. This edition’s focus is on how to incorporate a coat into the daily outfit. Recently- a black blazer has become a woman’s most prized possession. Wearing it with jeans and heels to hit the town, or a skirt and flats for more of a business attire look. Either way, the blazer adds an element of sophistication while simultaneously bringing funk to the outfit.

Baby, it’s cold outside! When it gets especially chilly, bring out a thicker coat- one with bright colors or a print to bring the attention away from how cold it is to how cute you look. Tweed coats are a classic- maybe even a bright yellow, purple, or red. The colorful jackets look awesome with neutral colors, regular jeans or black. Keeping the bottom half calm makes sure the color is what adds the “pop” to the outfit.

By Pierce Persons be the make or break of an outfit. Use them to spice up your casual daytime shopping ensemble or use them as dressy coat for your black tie event. They vary in size, length, color, and pattern. I love this one from The Red Dress Boutique...

These add the pop from Heery’s...

This great one is found at Cheeky Peach...

When considering a print, or tweed I also recommend keeping the bottom part of the outfit tame. Once again this places the attention to the jacket, which is essentially the center of the outfit. These jackets not only help you stay warm, but they can

However, there should be a coat for every occasion. Lucky for you, these jackets can be found as close as downtown Athens. Venture to places like Heery’s, The Red Dress Boutique, Flirt Fashions, Showpony, and Cheeky Peach among others to invest in your very own winter coat. And if it is too cold to venture out to the stores check out their websites to get an idea!
