Bubba’s win is #awesome for our golf edition

Hugh Acheson of southern foodie acclaim, with restaurants in Athens and Atlanta as well as stints as Top Chef Masters’ competitor and judge, said it best on twitter, “Between Bubba Watson and John Isner, it's pretty cool to see some UGA Dawgs really shine in sports other than pigskin.” Hugh is absolutely right as it truly is so rewarding to see Bubba and Isner’s success on international platforms in golf and tennis, respectively. But fans can also be so proud of what good guys they are in addition to their awesome athleticism. They represent the Bulldogs so well on the courses and courts all over the world with both on air thanking their fans from the Bulldog nation and often wearing UGA ball caps and memorabilia. And to top it all off, they both come back to Athens and support the University of Georgia regularly. Isner has held the John Isner Tennis Camp at the UGA Dan Magill Tennis Complex. He has participated in fundraisers there as well. Bubba served as an honorary chair of last year’s Stadion Classic at UGA and participated in numerous events including the ProAm. And after winning a bet, Bubba coached a recent Lady Dawg’s basketball game alongside his wife Angie’s former coach Andy Landers. You can read

more in Jeff Dantzler’s column on page 4 on these American Bulldog sports icons. The Monday after the Masters win, I was emailing with the president of the Charleston Low Country Dawgs club, Tom Harris, and he said there wasn’t a dry eye in his house. I bet it was that way all over the Bulldog nation. I know I was in tears when Bubba hugged his momma. Bubba is just such an easy person to root for as he isn’t perfect as we have seen his temper flare in the past but he makes no excuses and looks to his faith in God to help him be a better man on and off the course which I believe has led to his new Bubba Golf. Those of us in the Twittersphere get to follow @bubbawatson’s frequent inspiring Bible verses and hilarious banter back and forth with fans. We understand his priorities as declared straight from his twitter profile: Christian. Husband. Daddy. Pro Golfer. Owner of General Lee 1. BubbaGolf is #awesome. Bubba’s timing with his Masters win was perfect for our Golf Edition. He set the tone for Bulldog success on the greens. This issue updates you on our UGA men and women’s recent and upcoming events. The GURU

All is right in the Bulldog Nation with Bubba’s win

Jeff Dantzler

At the most beautiful place in the world, in the greatest sporting event of them all, Bubba Watson did the incredible. His best quote, “I never got that far in my dreams.” So to call this ultra-classy, heart-on-his sleeve, self-taught, no lesson-taking, General Lee owning, Georgia Bulldog southpaw’s unforgettable victory in another Masters for the ages a dream come true isn’t exactly accurate. Easter Sunday 2012 – you may recall that Herschel Walker signed with Georgia on Easter Sunday 1980 – goes down as one of the greatest days in red and black alumni history. Early in the day, tennis great John Isner clinched the United States Davis Cup Tie victory over France, downing Jo Wilfried Tsonga to send the U.S. into the semifinals. Two days prior in the resort town of Roquebrune, at the Monte Carlo Country Club, Isner beat Gilles Simon. Isner has vaulted into the top ten in the world, highlighted by wins over Roger Federer and Novak Djokavic. “Big John” has been an incomparable walking billboard of Bulldog pride and loyalty. No athlete alum from any school in any sport wears the colors like Isner does for Georgia. Meanwhile at Augusta, as the final round was getting underway, Watson was three strokes off the pace at six-under, tied for third with his playing companion Louis Oosthuizen, behind Peter Hanson (minus-nine) and Phil Mickleson (minus-8). As I was calling the play-by-play of Georgia’s baseball game vs. Arkansas in Fayetteville – a long way from the Augusta National and Monte Carlo Country Club, and right in the midst of “Motorcycle Gate” – my cell phone started “blowing up” with texts from friends that Oosthuizen had recorded an incredible double eagle two at the par five second hole. The Albatross is amongst the rarest feats in sports and is undoubtedly the most uncommon in golf. To illustrate, from 1983 to 2003, there were 631 holes in one on the PGA Tour. Over that same stretch, there were a mere 56 double-eagles. It was just the fourth double eagle ever at the Masters. Interestingly, there has been one at each of the Par Five’s – the second, eighth, No. 13 and No. 15, where Gene Sarazen scored his famous two en

route to the 1935 title. To be in the hunt and have that happen, it was my thinking that the 2010 British Open champion was about to join a highly exclusive club to win at Augusta National and St. Andrews. But that double eagle would be just the second most famous shot of the day. Oosthuizen said afterwards that it was hard to calm himself after such a history-making shot – which happened to be the first one ever recorded on television. While Hanson dropped back and Mickleson had a disastrous triple-bogey, Watson was steady. Then he made his move, birdieing the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th. It turned into a two-man showdown for the Green Jacket. On the second playoff hole, Par Four tenth, Oosthuizen was in the fairway, and Watson was in the pines. Advantage Louis. Or so it seemed. Georgia golf coach Chris Haack, who had the team over to watch the final round and cheer for Bubba, recounted to the AJC’s Chip Towers that he and assistant Jim Douglass, who both coached Watson in his days, that the impending shot was “right in his wheelhouse.” Was it ever. Watson hit an epic hook to within ten feet, shaping the shot some 40 yards from left to right. Oosthuizen’s par putt just missed and Watson wound up with a tap in to win. Never got that far. What a line. What a performance. Upon donning the Green Jacket, with the assist from the defending champion Charl Schwartzel, Watson was quick with a “Go Dawgs!” Watson is the first Bulldog to win a professional major championship. Chip Beck came close, finishing second to Bernhard Langer in Augusta in 1993. Watson came even closer, falling to Martin Kaymer in a playoff at the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling

Straits, the event most remembered for Dustin Johnson’s ground club in a fairway “bunker.” On ESPN’s Sunday night “top plays” portion of Sportscenter, Oosthuizen’s double eagle was No. 2. Who would have ever thought some eight hours earlier that would be the case? The No. 3 spot by the way went to Bulldogs right fielder Peter Verdin, who made an incredible diving catch in the stands at Arkansas The top spot of course went to Watson. There have been many famous shots at Augusta through the years. Sarazen’s aforementioned double eagle, jack Nicklaus’s tee shot to No. 16 in 1986 and Tiger Woods’s birdie at the same beautiful par three that hung on the lip, and then tumbled home are just a few that come to mind. Add two more to the list – the left hook edging the albatross. Watson’s wife, the former Angie Ball, played basketball at Georgia for legendary hall of fame coach Andy Landers from 1997-2000. She wasn’t in Augusta, staying home with the couple’s newly adopted baby. Landers famously lost a bet that Watson couldn’t hit a ball off the goal line of the Sanford Stadium West End Zone out of the stadium over the upper deck on the East end. Kaboom. The ball cleared the tracks and wound up somewhere in the cemetery. Had Bubba lost the bet, Landers was to caddy for him at the Par Three in Augusta. That’s a “no-lose” bet. So Watson got to sit on the bench for the Lady Dogs regular season home finale victory over LSU as guest coach. Well he didn’t go sit on the opposite end from Landers with the student managers. Bubba sat right next to Landers the entire game and even called a couple of timeouts – upon the coach’s orders. His greatest day in sports would come several Sundays later. And the Universe of golf and tennis most certainly boast Bulldogs amongst their brightest stars.

Travis Ragsdale’s 411 on University of Georgia athletics By Travis Ragsdale

Gym Dogs After being slight underdogs in the Auburn regional, the Gym Dogs out performed even what their own expectations were and won the regional, advancing to the NCAA Championship. This marked the 22nd time that the program has won a NCAA regional title and advances to the 12 team field of the NCAA Championship for the 28th time. In the regional, they had the high team score in three events and finished 1-2 in the all-around. Kat Ding won her fifth all-around with a score of 39.500 and Noel Couch tied for second with a 39.425. Ding and Couch sealed the win for the Dawgs in the fifth rotation on vault with a pair of 9.9s. On April 20, Georgia will travel just down the road to Gwinnett Arena to compete in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships. The first session begins at noon and the second begins at 6 p.m. The top three teams from each session will then compete on April 21 at 4 p.m. for the national title. The individual event finals will be held April 22 at 1 p.m.

Baseball With rain-outs, pre-mature postponements, free baseball and plugged in games it’s been a strange couple of weeks for the Diamond Dawgs and Coach Perno. The team traveled up to Cullowhee, North Carolina for a game against Western Carolina but had to turn around and drive back to Athens after the weather was too bad to play. Since it was an out of conference game, both teams decided to just cancel the game altogether and not make it up. Fayetteville, AK was the next stop where the Dawgs took the first game but fell pretty handedly in the next two games. A quick trip up I-85 to Clemson saw the team avenge an early season loss against the Tigers. Most recently, the Diamond Dogs took two of three from the 18th ranked Ole Miss Rebels. A huge series is coming up for the Dawgs as they travel to Florida to take on the Gators April 20, 21 and 22. After that, it’s the annual Georgia-Georgia Tech game at 7 p.m. in Atlanta at Turner Field.

Softball Georgia is now 34-10 and 12-7 in SEC play and ranked 11th in country. It was a rough series against Kentucky though as the Dawgs had to pull out a 4-3 win on Sunday to avoid the series sweep. Freshman Paige Wilson has stepped up to support the Dawgs at the dish as the team had been struggling a bit to get runs across. She was a prefect 3 for 3 with a homerun in the Sunday series finale against the Wildcats. The pitching has still been solid however, with senior Erin Arevalo notching her 18th win of the year on Sunday. On Wednesday the 18th, Georgia plays host to in-state rival Georgia Tech at 6:30 p.m. Then, the Alabama Crimson Tide roll into town for a three game set beginning Thursday April 19.

Equestrian The ladies of the equestrian finished up their season by winning its second National Collegiate Equestrian Association Reserve Championship. The hunt and western seat teams both finished third beating Auburn and South Carolina respectively. Paige Stawicki took home the Most Outstanding Rider award in horsemanship. As expected Texas A&M took the overall title plus the Western style title. The Baylor Bears took home their first ever national title in equestrian with the hunt seat crown.

Tennis The men and women’s tennis teams wrapped up their regular seasons both with wins over Tennessee. The men cruised passed the Volunteers in Knoxville with a 7-0 victory. The women’s match was unconventional as Tennessee did not have enough healthy players to compete and simply forfeited the match to the Dawgs. The 8th ranked ladies will travel to Ole Miss to begin the SEC tournament April 20. The men earned the second seed and a bye in the first round of their SEC tournament hosted by Mississippi State. They will play the winner of the Auburn-South Carolina match on Saturday April 21 at noon. Bitter rival Kentucky sits on the other side of the bracket as the number one seed. It appears both teams are on a one-way collision course for a showdown in the Sunday finals.

Track and Field The Spec Towns National Team Invitational is one of the few track meets Georgia plays host to every year and this year it was no disappointment. The bulldogs picked up 12 first place finishes across the events at the invitational. It was highlighted by Morgann Leleux who set a school record in he pole vault as she cleared a height of 14-4” on her second attempt. She now ranks second in the nation. Sophomore Caleb Whitener had a career best in the shot put and won by three feet. On the track, freshman Tynia Gaither won the 100 for her first ever victory in college. The teams now have a week off before runners head to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Relays April 26-28. The throwers will be competing in the Triton Invitational in San Diego that same weekend.

Golf April is a great month for Georgia golf and this year was made particularly special with former Bulldog Bubba Watson winning the Masters. It’s also a special month for the UGA’s men’s team who will compete in the SEC Championships at Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simon’s Island. The women don’t have quite the luxury of traveling down to the coast and instead travel to Fayetteville, AK for their championship. Both tournaments will be happening over April 20, 21 and 22. After that, the Stadion Classic at UGA will be played on the UGA Golf Course where two of the players on the UGA team get a special exemption to play in this Nationwide PGA Tour event. 6

Spotlight on 40th Annual Liz Murphey Classic in Athens For one night, the women from the 17 teams participating in the Liz Murphey Classicheld a few weeks ago get to go back to summer camp, or at least that’s what it feels like. A highly anticipated event of the 40-year-old tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia, is the annual pre-tournament picnic. It’s not completely free of competition, but the rivalry comes in the unexpected form of an egg toss, a closest-to-pin shootout HTVUN JVHJOLZ HUK H ÄZOPUN JVU[LZ[ ^OLYL [OL girls get to know the people, not the athletes, they’re competing against. The evening offers the women exactly what they need, an opportunity to step away from the game and give them more than just golf, a chance to forget all the rules and circumstance that comes with being a college athlete and have fun. “It’s what college athletics should be all about,” says Florida State women’s assistant golf coach Robert Duck. He adds he’s “never seen anything like this in college sports” before. And it’s clear from my conversations over dinner that this is a night most of the women look forward to all year long. As I move on to the women from South Carolina, I meet sophomore Samantha Swinehart, whose mother happens to have grown up only houses from where my mom did in West Virginia. My question about her favorite part of the tournament is passed over as she eagerly texts her mom about our chance meeting. Even her coach Kalen Harris is more excited about introducing me to Swinehart’s mother Terri, than talking about what the weekend holds.

As the women begin to transition from dinner to the night’s activities, laughter is all that can be heard. Most importantly though, they talk about how proud they are of each other.

From the feeling amongst players to my conversations with parents and coaches alike, the whole night reminds me why I myself fell in love with golf as a young girl. And somehow I can’t help but think that’s exactly what everyone else is thinking too. Even though Friday morning undoubtedly drew out the competition lurking below the surface of the evening prior’s event, the women get to take part in traditions that bind them together in a way nothing else can. They’re left with something much more important than anything else they’ll gain from the tournament and that’s memories. And after 40 years, it’s clear why the Liz Murphey Classic is a tournament unlike any other.

With Bubba’s win at the Masters and the Stadion Classic at UGA at the end of the month, golf is making its way into Athens. The upcoming tournament at the UGA Golf Course is no UGA football game. Take a lesson from Bubba and ‘dress to impress.’ I took a trip over to George Gibson’s Menswear for the best of the best in classic menswear and found some perfect pieces from The Red Dress Boutique and Heery’s Clothes Closet for the ladies.

How do y’all as a team help out with the Stadion tournament? Stadion does a great job each year at the tournament and they do a great thing each year for us by giving the team two sponsor exemptions into the event. Last year Russell Henley received one of the exemptions by Stadion and it has changed his professional career forever. It is such a great opportunity for us to see how our game compares to the pros and we can’t thank Stadion enough for their sponsorship.

What do you do to prepare for a golf tournament? Usually I try to simplify all of my thoughts when it comes to mechanics throughout my game. You never want to go into a tournament with a bunch of thoughts in your head over shots. It’s much easier to play with a clear mind and be able to focus more on the shot at hand. Also, I take the conditions that we will face at the upcoming tournament whether it be the course or the weather as much as possible the week before. This coming week at Sea Island we will expect some fast greens and strong winds. So we will work on our trajectory in order to keep the ball below the wind, and the UGA Golf Course staff does a great job in making our NYLLUZ ]LY` ÄYT MHZ[ PU WYLWHYH[PVU MVY [OPZ \WJVTPUN ^LLR

Ten reasons you can’t miss this year’s Stadion Classic at UGA By Travis Ragsdale The Stadion Classic is back in Athens and at the UGA Golf Course. April 30 through May 6 is chocked full of activities for the whole family. Here are ten reasons why you can’t miss the Stadion Classic this year... 1. The Return of the Russell For those of you at the Stadion Classic last year, you recall the excitement surrounding Russell Henley as he made a push for the lead on Saturday and captured the tournament win on Sunday. Seeing an amateur win, on his home course, in front of Georgia fans was fun for everyone involved. This year, Henley returns to defend his title and there will certainly be a buzz surrounding him once again. 2. Play in the Tournament Yourself So you’re a two or three handicapper. Heck, you may even break par every so often. You think you’ve got what it takes to compete against professionals. Well, prove it. One of the neat things about the Nationwide Tour is that any open tournament spots are open to the public to qualify for. Monday, April 30, the tournament qualifier will be held at Jennings Mill and Georgia Club. It’s your chance to get in there and prove you’re more than just a weekend warrior. 3. Free Children’s Clinic Also on April 30, Chick-fil-a will be holding their student-junior golf clinic at the UGA driving range. Nationwide tour players and players from the UGA men’s and women’s teams will be helping out by giving instruction to all children and UGA students that register. Free coupons and chicken sandwiches will be handed out by the folks from Chick-Fil-A Beechwood during the event as well. Plus, there will be a raffle for one junior and one UGA student to win free Chick-Fil-A for a year. Be sure to register soon those as the 150 spots are sure to be taken up quickly. 4. Tickets FORE Charity The ultimate goal for this tournament and events surrounding it is to raise money for charity. That’s what the Tickets FORE charity program does. The program allows for any non-profit organization to sell tickets and keep 100% of the profits from those profits. Since its inception, Tickets FORE Charity has raised over 5 millions dollars for nonprofits. 5. 19th Hole Concert Series Following play every day of the tournament, there will be special concerts held at the Melting Point. First, on Wednesday the 2nd, there will be a kickoff party featuring the smooth sounds of the Rand Lines Trio. Other headliners include Parrothead Paradise, Swingin’ Medallions and a special Cinco De Mayo celebration featuring Grogus.

9. Inside the Course You’ve played the UGA Course before. You know how difficult of a course it is. Well, what better way to help your game than let the pros show you how to play your home course. Get out and really watch the pros and how they approach certain shots on the course. It will certainly help your game. 10. Why not? It’s Athens, it’s the spring and it’s golf. So why wouldn’t you come out at least one tournament day? Tickets are only $10 and if the weather is at all similar to what we’ve been having in Athens, it’s going to be a great, great weekend of golf.

6. Go Dawgs! For some UGA golfers, the possibility of playing professional is on the horizon. But for most, their golf careers will end after they graduate. Since UGA plays host to the Stadion, UGA’s golfers receive a special exemption to play in the tournament. This is how Russell Henley got into the tournament last year. Who knows, maybe this year it will be a guy like TJ Mitchell who will compete for the top spot in the tournament. 7. A Look at the Future You may not think that the Nationwide tour is “real” pro golf. Granted, it is the unofficially minor leagues of the PGA tour but this is where the next Bubba Watson’s and Tiger Woods come from. So get out and see them up close and personal. 8. Yamaha Golf-Car Pro-Am Another way that your average weekend warrior can get involved is with the ProAm. The Pro-Am will be held the Wednesday before the tournament starts. If interested, players need to contact Tournament Director Dave Cousart.

By Daniel Peiken Well if you took my advice to see the Alabama Shakes then you know you were at the place to be in Athens GA that night. They Sold Out the Georgia Theatre without even having an official record released. Keep an eye and an ear out for these guys, they are the BUZZ BAND of the year. Check out www.AthensRockShow.com to watch more than 1600 of my videos and pictures of Athens bands. Here is where I’d go if I could go out every night and see every band that I wanted to see in Athens. 4/17 Warren Haynes (Georgia Theatre) 4/17 Betsy Franck & Friends (Highwire Lounge) FREE 4/17 Starlight DeVilles / Mark Cunningham / the Johnny Monster Band (GO Bar) 4/18 Scott Baxendale & Friends (Hendershots Coffee) 4/18 Bloodkin / Johnny Corndawg / Shovels and Rope (Georgia Theatre) 4/18 Lowdive, Passafire (The Melting Point) 4/19 Eddie and the Public Speakers / The Pimps of Joytime (Georgia Theatre) 4/20 the Dictatortots / VG Minus (the 40 Watt Club) 4/21 the Futurebirds, Don Chambers, New Madrid (Georgia Theatre) 4/21 Vincas / Manray / Lazer Wulf (Caledonia Lounge) 4/23 Monahan / Sleep Dance / Alexis Marceaux & the Samurai (Flicker Theatre) 4/24 Betsy Franck & Friends (Highwire Lounge) FREE 4/24 Ike Stubblefield (Hendershots Coffee Bar) 4/26 Mark Cunningham & the Nationals (DePalma's Italian Cafe) 4/27 Efren, 90 Acre Farm (Georgia Bar) - Album Release Party 4/27 Dream So Real Reunion (The Melting Point) 4/28 Perpetual Groove (Georgia Theatre) 4/28 Powerkompany / Stefaniesid / Boycycle (Caledonia Lounge) 5/4 Reptar / Grass Giraffes / Grape Soda (the 40 Watt Club) 5/5 Coheed & Cambria (the 40 Watt Club) 5/5 Hopeforagoldensummer Album Release Spectacular (Whole: Mind, Body, Art) 5/9 Jane Jane Pollock, the Growlers (Georgia Theatre) 5/11 Mother's Finest / Matt Joiner Band (Georgia Theatre) 5/16 M.
