The Publisher Cheri Leavy It’s a labor of love to put together an issue of Bulldawg Illustrated. Printing on a Monday, the deadline can eat up your weekend. Don’t worry we always manage to work hard and play hard. So on this sunny Saturday, I sat poolside with friends but had pages and my red pen in my lap proofing after a morning of designing pages. We listened to Jeff Dantzler on the radio as he brought the win to life in our backyard. We live close enough to Foley Field we could hear the roar of the crowd when the Diamond Dawgs had success. We try to get to as much of the sports as possible because it is such a treat to have it all so readily available. And even though it is cool to hear in your backyard, it makes a Bulldog feel a little guilty to listen to the fans’ cheering from both Foley and Jack Turner stadium and you are not there lending your own support! Vance headed over to the Jack Turner stadium dedication this past week and the photos are on page 11. This week the girls take on Mississippi State here at home. I hope to see you at Foley May 19-21 when Perno’s team faces Vanderbilt. We have friends coming in town from Atlanta with their kids to enjoy a Saturday of baseball with us. I wish we were in town for the ‘Gone With the Wind’ 75th Anniversary Celebration sponsored by the University of Georgia Libraries on May 6th and 7th but we have Leadership Georgia Alumni Weekend on St. Simons. UGA Library is home to the largest Margaret Mitchell collection in the country so expect an incredible program celebrating this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. For more information about this program or to purchase admission tickets, please contact Leandra Nessel at 706/5423879 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Andrew Downs captures the spirit of Athens own starlet, Kathleen Hogan on page 6. She plays the role of Mrs. Mountchessington in The Conspirator directed by Robert Redford in the theatres now. I swoon. What a thrill it must have been to work with him! Athens enjoyed a thrilling week of fashion during Athens Fashion Week. Bravo tv cameras rolled as Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak joined the fun. The shows were fabulous and everyone anticipates next year’s to be even bigger and better. We captured the kickoff party at Flirt Fashions on page 13 and will have more photos from AFW in our next issue. A self proclaimed foodie, I must plug the Farmer’s Market at Little Kings downtown on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. We have photos on page 7. The produce is beautiful and it feels right to prepare a meal with food grown from within an hour of where we live. I think of my grandfather every time I go to Bishop Park’s farmers market on Saturdays or Little Kings on Tuesdays. I may prepare my southern food a little differently than Bah Bah did but it is he who inspired me to use the freshest ingredients. Inspiration also came from Laura Meeks this week who shared with me a simple and delicious appetizer and her heavenly bread pudding recipes. You can see some of the photo shoot on the back page as well as head over to guide2athens website for more of the “how to.” Congratulations to all of you University of Georgia graduates! You will treasure your time at this great university and in Athens for the rest of your life. Good luck as you embark on your next phase of life. Publishers:

The EDITOR Ryan Scates When our team at BI Athens sat down to discuss our 2011 issue lineup last January, this issue (Issue Nine) stood out as a particular challenge. With a deadline coming the week before finals and a boatload of pressed-for-time graduates to spotlight, covering UGA sports, lifestyle and tipping our hats to this year’s graduates seemed to be a daunting task. But it only took a few hours on Wednesday, April 27th to shift our perspective on what really amounts to a “daunting task”. Events like last month’s historic tornado outbreak act as a reminder of how much we have to be thankful for and to celebrate during this season at America’s oldest state-chartered university. Spring Commencement is easily my favorite event of the year in Athens. Walking across Sanford Stadium with some of my best friends from the previous four (and in many cases, five or six) years to receive my degree from the state’s flagship university is my most enduring memory from life as an undergrad. UGA has produced more than its fair share of graduates who have gone on to make an impact on the global stage. From world-class entertainers and athletes to leaders in the business and political arenas, every UGA graduate owes a part of who they are today to the lessons they learned and the people they encountered during their time in Athens. For the second year running, this issue includes several graduate profiles of UGA seniors who have made their mark on campus and are off to put their education to good use after graduation. Don’t miss their insights as to some of their best memories from Athens, and all of us could also benefit from their wisdom as to the biggest lesson they learned during their time at UGA. Graduating seniors: believe me when I tell you that at the end of the night, after the speeches have been made and the family photos have been taken, you will find yourself at a watershed moment. To paraphrase University President Michael Adams, you will then hold a degree from the University of Georgia, and the world will expect more from you because of it. At Bulldawg Illustrated we are proud to count ourselves among the group of over 250,000 UGA alumni that you will join Saturday night. Congratulations! Also be sure to check out our boatload of fan photos in this issue, ranging from Twilight weekend to the Diamond Dawgs’ win over Georgia Tech at Turner Field in Atlanta. On behalf of Dawgs across the country, I’d like to personally thank the baseball team for avoiding the season sweep from those guys down on North Avenue. Finally, seeing a fellow southern college town devastated by last month’s tornadoes was especially heartbreaking. If you are interested in helping with relief efforts in Tuscaloosa, the “Dawgs for Tuscaloosa” Facebook group has a listing of ways Athens locals can help the cause. Also, a quick text message that says “REDCROSS” to 90999 makes a $10 general donation to the American Red Cross and disaster relief across the South. Once again, congratulations to the class of 2011, and enjoy the issue! C Circulation:

The GURU

Palazzone has been brilliant for Perno’s gritty team

Jeff Dantzler

A native of Marietta and prep standout from Lassiter High School, Michael Palazzone was a heralded recruit for head coach David Perno, choosing to come to Georgia after being drafted by the Atlanta Braves. As a freshman, Palazzone went 3-0 with a save and recorded an Earned Run Average of 5.13. Last season, as Georgia struggled through a difficult campaign, he went 4-6 with an ERA of 8.66, but had some strong outings down the stretch. “I told Michael at the end of last season that I had a lot of confidence in him, reflects Perno, who has guided the Bulldogs to three College World Series appearances, a pair of Southeastern Conference championships and five of the school’s 10 all-time NCAA tournament appearances in his head-coaching tenure, which began in 2002. “Our plan this season was to build our pitching staff around Michael, and obviously he’s come through and responded tremendously. There are still three weeks of play in the regular season, then the SEC Tournament, and then hopefully an NCAA Regional berth. Should the Bulldogs, who are 24-21 overall and 13-8, alone in fourth in the rough and tough SEC, while facing far and away the nation’s strongest schedule, finish with a winning mark, Georgia will be a lock for the NCAAs. Palazzone is a huge reason why. Over the last nine weeks of the year, Palazzone is 8-0 with a no-decision, while working at least seven innings each time out, against a who’s who

of college baseball’s finest and fierce SEC foes: Florida State, Southern Cal, South Carolina, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida, Tennessee and Arkansas. His ERA over that stretch is just a shade over two. Those nine programs have combined for nearly 100 all-time College World Series appearances. Following arguably his finest performance of the season, a 3-0 win over Arkansas, in which he went eight scoreless innings, Palazzone improved to 8-1 on the year with an ERA of 2.14. What’s even more impressive, in SEC play, the dazzling right-hander is 6-0 with an ERA of 1.74. During his astounding streak of success, Palazzone went 38.2 consecutive innings without allowing a walk. In an 8-3 complete-game victory at Ole Miss, his final pitch count was either 88 or 90, depending on which clicker you read. Following that win in Oxford, Perno said the reason he sent a couple of relievers to the bullpen in the closing innings was simply so they could get some exercise. He’s truly been a “stopper. Over each of the last three weeks, Georgia has lost the Friday night series opener, but behind Palazzone, the Bulldogs have bounced back to win on Saturday. The Bulldogs followed that up with Sunday wins the last two weeks against Tennessee and Arkansas to capture the series, despite the Friday loss – a tough trick to turn. There’s still a ways, and hopefully a long time

to go, but to this point, Palazzone’s season could be rivaled only by former All-Americans and eventual first rounders, Derek Lilliquist and Dave Fleming. Lilliquist went 14-3 with a school record 190 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.24, while slugging 19 home runs for the Bulldogs 1987 College World Series squad. Fleming had 13 complete games (with several seven inning contests included) with going 12-6 for the 1990 national champions. “He’s having that kind of year, Fleming and Lilliquist – who of course had a great year at the plate, too – are the only other names that jump to mind, says Perno. “Michael’s a great kid and a great competitor, he’s bought into everything we’ve asked of him and has been a joy to coach. An outstanding student majoring in Risk Management and Insurance, Palazzone was named to the 2009 Freshman Academic Honor Roll and was the team’s Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year. In 2010, Palazzone was named to the UGA Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, again earned the team’s Scholar Athlete-ofthe-Year Award and was awarded the William K. Holmes Baseball Scholarship endowment. This gritty Georgia team, with so much to overcome against this brutally tough schedule, has already become a favorite of Bulldog baseball followers. And it’s no mystery, Georgia has leaned heavily on Michael Palazzone. And has he ever delivered – as good as any Bulldog ever to this point, hopefully with a lot more to go.

CONVERSATIONS By Andrew Downs

The curtain rises I don’t know for sure if anyone ever said to Kathleen Hogan, “You ought to be in pictures,” but that certainly doesn’t make a difference now, because she is. Her most recent movie credit, her second so far, is her role in the recently released movie, The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford. Yes, Kathleen is a bona fide actress with the credits to prove it, and she calls Athens home. Kathleen’s life took her from Detroit to Ohio before arriving in Athens where her brother and mother preceeded her. Did I forget to mention her 15-year stint as an actress in New York? Oh yes, a stage actress only goes to one place, New York City. Act I She had been in New York for about a year when she asked herself that defining question, “Do I have what it takes?” She answered, “Yes.” It’s not like she didn’t already know the answer. She was in love with the theatre at seven when she was cast in The Nutcracker in Detroit. Her ballet teacher from the Bolshoi Ballet told her parents to make sure she kept dancing. They did. There were many roles and summer stock along the way. Kathleen was emotionally hooked, a prerequisite for success in the theatre. Being hooked on acting is a long, lonely, introspective road. She was pretty much alone with her dreams and hard work in New York. “I never thought being alone meant being weak,” said Kathleen. “To me it meant choosing a less traveled road.” However, the less traveled road is not an easy role. It starts with uncertainty and compels you to tell something about yourself with each act, become someone you don’t know every day, and broadens your horizons for having been there. Kathleen felt comfortable on that road and felt confident in her skills as an actress, but some difficult life events caused her to take a curve in the road. She discovered that reaching out for support was a stronger act than trying to go it alone, and her priorities in life shifted. Act II Because her family was in Athens, she came south and made it her home. She came out fighting. She fell in love with Athens, found creative acceptance, a professional theatre, wonderful friends, a top agent in Atlanta, and gets to spend quality time with her family. Her next thought was, “Why leave when I have the best of both worlds?” While in Athens, Kathleen has played Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Polly in The Threepenny Opera, among many others. She is also a founding member and Executive Director of The Circle Ensemble Theatre Company, a professional theatre here in Athens. She co-founded the company with Joelle Re Arp Dunham and Lisa Mende, both of whom are successful theatre professionals transplanted to Athens from New York and L.A. Act III Kathleen began to audition for movie roles through her agent, Atlanta Models and Talent,. The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, was one. “Being directed by Robert Redford was the most wonderful and terrifying experience, and it is permanently etched into my memory,” said Kathleen. Kathleen also learned that filming a movie is no simple walk on the stage in the Booth Theatre in 1865- (her character, Mrs. Mountchessington, is an actress in The Conspirator). Three of her scenes were shot from noon to 9:00 the next morning, with Robert Redford directing the whole time. A movie set is nothing like the New York stage! Act IV It was seven in the evening on April 15th, and the red carpet was stretched out in front of Beechwood Cinema. Miss Hogan arrived with lights flashing and an armful of red roses. She entered the theatre to thunderous applause and the movie began. It is hard to imagine seeing someone you know on the Big Screen. Believe me, I was there. “The experience of seeing myself on the screen is surreal,” said Kathleen. It’s like watching someone else. It fills me with gratitude and a sense of accomplishment, and I pray that it’s just another step forward- that there will be many more.” Curtain Call The movie ended, the credits rolled, and Kathleen’s name rolled across the screen. The audience erupted and a sense of joy was in every corner of that theatre. That doesn’t happen every day in Ol’ Athens town! My feeling is that I will sit in a movie theatre and watch Kathleen Hogan ply her craft again and again.

Grad Profiles - Class of 2011 Martina Palatto

Michelle Appelman

Hometown: Lilburn, GA

Hometown: Mobile, Alabama

Major and Post-graduation plans: I am currently working on my Juris Doctor (law degree) and will graduate this May. I am actually a Double Dawg and earned my Bachelor's degree in Public Relations from Grady in 2007. Post-grad plans are to study for the Georgia bar exam and start work in September in Georgia.

Major and Post-graduation plans: Special Education and I plan on staying at UGA to get my masters in Special Education

Biggest lesson learned at UGA: Biggest lesson learned at UGA is to enjoy the people and places around you for the short time you experience them. In the seven years I have lived in Athens I have grown to love and respect the people and this town more than I could have imagined. The ability to view Athens as my "home" has made my studies here that much more meaningful. Best (non-sports) memory from time at UGA: My best non-sports memory (since I enjoy watching the Bulldogs!) is attending Barrister's Ball, which is essentially law school prom, with my closest friends and roommate all three years while in law school.

Christina Swoope

Biggest Lesson Learned at UGA: With a student population of over 34,000, it can be so easy to get lost among the masses. However, what I have learned in my time here is that we all begin as freshman with our entire college experience ahead of us and the wonderful opportunity to make a difference. Whether you are involved in sports, academics, clubs, or change the life of one person or the entire campus, it does not matter. We all have the ability to leave UGA a little better than we found it. Best Memory from time at UGA: While my four years have been filled with countless memories, if I had to chose I would say that my favorite memory here at UGA was the "snowpocalypse." I have never felt so connected to the UGA community. I absolutely loved walking around our beautiful city all covered in snow. Excitement filled the air, as students filled the UGA campus, embraced their inner child, and just played.

Hometown: Alpharetta, GA Major and Post-graduation plans: I am majoring in Microbiology with a minor in Public Health. This fall I will be attending Johns Hopkins University to pursue a Master of Science in Public Health. Biggest lesson learned at UGA; People will not care how much you know until they know how much you care. Best memory from time at UGA: Standing on the field representing the Redcoat Band on the homecoming court in 2009. It was at that moment I realized how much of my life has been forever changed because of this university, and how some of the most amazing moments in my life have taken place on that very field. Exactly five years prior, I had been invited to conduct the Redcoats at homecoming as a high school junior, and I specifically remember standing on the field thinking that conducting the Redcoats that day would be a oncein-a-life-time opportunity. Three years later, because of the things I learned and had taken to heart from a UGA Summer Marching Camp, I marched onto the field for my first pre-game show as a Redcoat Band drum major, being the first African-American female in the history of this university to do so. Two years later, I stood on that field in total disbelief as a member of the 2009 Homecoming Court representing an organization that I can honestly say has had a large hand in making me who I am. Very rarely can you say that something has truly changed your life, but I know that I am the person I am today and the leader I will be tomorrow because of the amazing experiences, relationships, and challenges I faced at the University of Georgia. 16

Randall Bourquin Hometown: Suwanee, GA Major and Post-graduation Plans: Marketing, International Business, and Spanish. I took a job in Lima, Peru, with Castalia Communications for after graduation. Biggest Lesson Learned at UGA: Biggest lesson I’ve learned is that if you’re passionate about what you’re doing then nothing can stop you. Best Memory from time at UGA: In the fall of 2009, I bought a goat off Craig’s List. We named it Charlemagne and it provided us with lots of great memories. Sadly, he’s on to bigger and better things.

Grad Profiles - Class of 2011 Sara Diehl

Frances Micklow

Hometown: Kennesaw, GA

Hometown: Kennesaw, Ga

Major and Post-graduation Plans: BBA in Management and Marketing. After graduation, I plan on moving to Nashville, TN., and completing two years in the Teach For America Corps. I am teaching high school mathematics, and I expect it to be a very challenging yet rewarding experience. After those two years are done, I'm really not sure where I'll go.

Major and Post-graduation plans: Magazines major with an emphasis in Photojournalism. After graduation I am hoping to pursue a career in visual journalism. I'm currently working on landing an internship with a newspaper photo department somewhere (anywhere) in the US. My passion is telling people's stories, so I'm excited to see where that takes me after graduation.

Biggest lesson learned at UGA: To try or apply for everything you are interested in...the worst that happens is you don't get it and then you are back to where you started. Best memory from time at UGA: I have been giving campus tours for the Visitors Center since my freshman year, and many good memories have come from it. One in particular, my brother (who was a student at the time) showed up with his roommate and had registered for one of my tours with a fake name so I wouldn't know it was him. He and his roommate both dressed up in ridiculous outfits and acted as if they were perspective students, asking some funny questions and definitely weirding people out the entire time. They both did a pretty good job of staying in character, but revealed that they were just giving me a hard time at the end to all of the other guests.

Biggest lesson learned at UGA: My biggest lesson learned at UGA has been that "you will get out of it what you put into it." This is something that I have found applies to your relationships with people, your campus and community involvement, your academics, and your general passions in life. I've learned that the only way that you're going to reach your full potential and experience life to it's fullest is by putting all you can into your endeavours. Best (non-sports) memory from time at UGA: So I guess I can't say the Auburn Black out game? haha. I think my best memories come from the incredible people that have made my college years so wonderfully fulfilling. If it weren't for the people I have been so lucky to get to know and call my friends, I wouldn't be able to look back on these four years with such fondness. But, if I have to pin down just one, I would say it was my first trip out of the US to the wonderful country of Cambodia made possible by the Grady College and the University of Georgia. My eyes and my mind were opened by the beautiful culture and people of Cambodia. It was a life changing trip and one I was truly blessed to be a part of.

Katie Kellogg

Drake Bernstein

Hometown: Stone Mountain, Georgia

Hometown: Winder, GA

Major and post-graduation plan: Major: Marketing. Post-graduation plans: In August, I'm moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan to work in Media Sales with Google.

Major and Post-graduation Plans: Sports Management. After college, I plan on staying in tennis. During the summer, I am looking to play professional tournaments or get a job working in tennis in Spain or Australia. After that, I plan on staying in the game of tennis through coaching. I am not sure what type of coaching I will be doing yet, but I would like to stay as close to high performance as possible (top juniors, collegiate or professional).

Biggest lesson learned at UGA: Say yes to the little things. You can take an hour out of studying to have a conversation with a new friend or finish answering e-mails tomorrow to go on an adventure with old ones. It will be those seemingly small experiences that have the largest impact on your memories of college and the depth of your resulting relationships. Best (non-sports) memory from time at UGA: Over winter break of my junior year, three friends and I decided to take a shotgun roadtrip to Nashville. We didn't have a place to stay, enough money to get into any of the concerts or even jackets for the 30-degree weather. But in the one night we were there, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard or been so stupidly spontaneous.

Best memory competing as a Bulldawg: Wow, there are a lot of things I could say here. I can narrow it down to two. Winning the NCAA team tournament in 2008 as a freshman is obviously a great memory. Also, last year when we beat Florida in the round of 16 of NCAAs in Athens (with the match ending after midnight) is a great memory because we had lost to them twice already during the regular season.

Grad Profiles ... Class of 2011

Lucas Ulloque

Dalton Klimp

Hometown: Cumming, Ga.

Hometown: Saint Simons Island, Georgia

Major and Post-graduation Plans: I'll be graduating with a Bachelors degree from Grady in Digital and Broadcast Journalism. Post-graduation, I'm really hoping to get the entry level position of Video Journalist at CNN, I'm in the finalstages of the application process. I have a part-time job right now working with the Atlanta Braves in the Interactive Marketing department interacting with fans going on the field and serving as basically a tour guide for the Braves. Biggest Lesson Learned at UGA: I've learned that anything is possible. Georgia has endless opportunities to get involved and make an impact on campus in ways most students don't pursue. Think outside the box, outside your comfort zone. Don't just hang out with people from your high school or hometown. There are so many resources available to you as a student at UGA and that's what in large part makes Georgia incredible as not only an institution of higher learning but also a place to grow as a student and as a person. Best memory from time at UGA: One of my greatest memories at UGA was serving as an Orientation Leader in the summer of 2009 introducing the entire freshman class to UGA. Throughout the summer I was lucky and blessed to have the opportunity to make incredible bonds with the 11 other Orientation Leaders as well as our Leadership team headlined by Milly Gorman. I got to fall in love with Athens and UGA all over again and get to spend the summer here in the classic city. I thought I loved UGA coming in as a freshman and in the summer of 2009 while being a part of the Orientation team I fell in love with Athens all over again and thought wow, this is my city.

Ali Eidson Hometown: Abilene, Texas Major and Post-graduation plans: Consumer Journalism with emphasis in Advertising. I hope to work in sports, mainly for an advertising firm. Best memory from competing as a Bulldawg: Winning the NCAA National championship my Sophomore year, we had struggled all year, and lost our western coach mid-way through the year, so as a team we pulled together and had tremendous team support, the win was so sweet.

Major/post-graduation plans: Bachelor in Sports Management and aspiring for a career in a college athletic department or within the professional sports industry. Biggest lesson learned at UGA: Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them. Best memory at UGA: My 22nd Birthday. Nick, Hunter, Steve, Meghan, Sam, Christy and Taylor all came over to Apartment 50 for a day full of memorable festivities.

Brittney Hubbard Hometown: Victorville, Ca Major and Post-graduation plans: My major is Magazines with a minor in Spanish. I have an internship with Nike this summer in LA, so post-graduation it would be such a blessing if a job opportunity came from this internship! Being a Nike Featured Athlete or even just working for them is a dream of mine. If that doesn't pan out, I would love to travel and immerse myself in the different cultures abroad and do some sort of photojournalism for a magazine in the United States. Best memory from competing as a Bulldawg: I have too many wonderful memories to count. Playing a Division 1 sport is a blessing no matter how you look at it, but when you get the opportunity to compete for a university like UGA it is a blessing unmatchable to nothing else. I have loved the opportunity and community at this school and to top it off I play with 22 of the best players and people in the nation!

Spotlight on Jonathan Arogeti After four years at UGA, Jonathan Arogeti is set to cap off an all-star collegiate career by delivering the student address at UGA’s commencement exercises on Saturday, May 14th at Sanford Stadium. BI recently caught up with the pending SPIA grad to feature him in our latest edition of the Spotlight series. Congratulations, Jonathan!

What do you plan to do after graduation? After graduation, I have received a communications fellowship at the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy in Washington, DC. I will be moving there in August.

Who is your favorite UGA athlete (present or former)? I am a huge baseball fan, so I remember watching Gordon Beckham play baseball against my high school before he graduated and came to UGA. It was great seeing him back in action when I arrived in college, but this time, we were both on the same side.

What is your major? I am studying history and Spanish.

What was your favorite vacation ever? Last winter, I was fortunate enough to travel to Cuba on a humanitarian trip. I never thought that I would have this opportunity and feel as if little will be able to compare with my experience there.

What is your favorite memory at UGA? My favorite memory at UGA was the 2007 Georgia-Georgia Tech NHTL (S[OV\NO 0 OHK ILLU [V [OL NHTL ILMVYL [OPZ ^HZ [OL Ă„YZ[ time I attended as a UGA student. Even though the game was bitter cold, I still think back to that game fondly.

What do you like to do on the weekends? I love spending time with friends, walking around the downtown area of Athens. I try to spend most of my weekends in town, so that I can take in as much of this city as I can before I graduate.

In the kitchen with LAURA MEEKS Anyone keeping up with my ‘In the Kitchen’ features may have picked up on that I am really only hanging out cooking with the nicest folks in town! And if you know Laura Meeks, then you know she is no exception. Our husbands are fraternity brothers so we have kept up over the years and I always love when we get the chance to really dish which we did recently in her kitchen. Laura, an interior designer, is known for her salads and they are always a hodge podge of delicious ingredients with the bowl full of textures and colors as well executed as one of her home projects. Laura decided to branch out and share one of her favorite desserts, bread pudding, and an easy appetizer that we will call the husband pleaser. I say this because she has husbands request she bring it to parties and wives call for the recipe the next day. It gets my thumbs up as well! It is always the simple things in life that make us happiest and this easy app has three ingredients pancetta, goat cheese and pear and is perfect! Visit guide2athens website to see more of the photoshoot, both recipes and the “how to” for Laura’s husband pleaser appetizer and the heavenly bread pudding. Bon appetit- Cheri Leavy

Banana Brioche Bread Pudding As Laura says this bread pudding is heaven on earth or sin on a plate, however you look at it! Her beloved neighbor Aunt Betsy (Turner) gives her lots of great tips and one is to always serve homemade whip cream. It is too easy to make and the store bought is terrible. 1 loaf cut into 1/2 inch cubes 4 cups heavy cream 1 1/4 cups dark brown sugar plus 2 TBS for topping pinch salt 3 large eggs 6 egg yolks 3 soft bananas Put cubes in large bowl. In saucepan, mix cream, 1 cup brown sugar and pinch of salt and bring to simmer over medium heat. Whisk eggs and yolks together in large bowl. In a slow stream, pour the hot cream mixture into whisked eggs. Strain thru a fine mesh sieve over bread cubes. Let sit to allow bread to absorb some of liquid for ten minutes. In bowl, mash bananas with 1/4 cup brown sugar. Fold into bread cubes and transfer mixture to 8”x11” baking dish. Top with 2 TBS brown sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 15 minutes. whipped cream topping: 1 cup heavy cream 1 tsp. vanilla 1 TBS. confectioners sugar Whip cream til firm, beat in vanilla and sugar until peaks form. Make sure not to over beat. Make sure bowl and whisk are ice cold.
