The Publisher Vance Leavy Well the first thing I must acknowledge is that all of us at BI Athens have had enough humble pie since our cover from last issue. In case you forgot or missed it, both basketball and swimming teams had huge victories against our friends from the north … the Tennessee Volunteers. At one of the contests, editor, Ryan Scates took a classic photo of a fan’s t-shirt (Can I get a Volunteer for An Ass Whoppin’). In our mind, the shirt was priceless and deserved some exposure on our cover. We did contemplate whether or not the image was suitable for print. In the end, with what is allowed on television, we made the decision to run with it because we felt our readers could take it for what is was … a funny t-shirt that summarized the victories over one of UGA’s biggest rivals. Thankfully, we had no direct complaints about the cover, but unfortunately our basketball teams have struggled mightily since then. Both teams have lost several games since the emotional wins over UT. Now I know a silly cover really had nothing to do with the decline, but I also know it’s always better to be HUMBLE when you’re having success. We got caught up in the moment, which I’m sure Coach Fox and Coach Landers have also been dealing with since the Volunteers left Athens. Even though wins haven’t been coming for the two Hoops teams, the effort hasn’t wavered. The Lady Dogs are battling through injuries and severe shooting woes. And despite outplaying most of the teams they’ve faced, Coach Fox’s team is learning the hard way that wins don’t come unless you play for a full 40 minutes. Finally there was a breakthrough for the men’s team this past Saturday night as they took down a very good Vanderbilt team in Stegeman Coliseum. Perhaps it’s the start of a magical 90 finish in SEC play. You just never know. I had a great conversation with Gym Dogs coach Jay Clark last week and despite his team’s early struggles he was completely upbeat. He reminded me that a couple of former teams still won national titles despite going through losing streaks. The team responded nicely this past weekend and will look to keep it going on Friday night when Arkansas comes to Athens. And then they travel to Gainesville on Feb. 18 for a huge battle against the Lady Gators. Luckily, the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams have avoided the “Tennessee Curse”. And that’s great news with the SEC championships coming to Athens on February 18. Assistant coach, Harvey Humphries told Cheri and me that the excitement at those meets is second to none as rowdy fans come out in full garb. The event will sell out, so get your tickets now if you want to support our swimmers and divers. Before I bid farewell, it would be remiss not to acknowledge the Men’s Tennis team who beat Georgia Tech for the 24th straight time on February 7. Of course beating the Jackets never gets old. I’m sure Dan Magill slept like a baby that night. Speaking of Coach Magill, Jeff Dantzler salutes him on page 4 as he celebrated his 89th birthday a few weeks ago. He truly is the greatest Bulldog ever! As Ryan points out to my right, we delve into several more UGA sports in this issue. It’s been gratifying to know how much the coaches and players appreciate our coverage and support. And I say that in hopes that our readers will look at our calendar on page 8 and find a sport that interests them and make plans to attend. There’s a heap of stuff going on with UGA athletics and we will continue to bring as many to you as possible. Look for two of my favorites in our next issue on Feb. 23 … baseball and golf. The EDITOR Ryan Scates Let’s face it…February is a tough month. The longer days and warmer temperatures of spring are still a good ways ahead of us, and the afterglow of the holiday season is now a good ways behind us. Without the warm weather and bright sunshine, losing focus can be disturbingly easy. Since Issue Two of B.I. Athens, the winter blues snuck up on Stegeman Coliseum as well. After beating Tennessee, the Hoop Dawgs lost three straight to Florida, South Carolina and Arkansas. Hopefully the Vandy win now has old man mo(mentum) heading in the right direction. And after a 18-1 start that included wins over Tennessee, Oklahoma and Rutgers, the Lady Dogs have dropped four (Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Auburn and South Carolina) out of five games. The lone victory came in a hard fought overtime game against LSU in Athens. The basketball teams weren’t the only program to face a mid-winter slump, as even the Gym Dogs tumbled to losses at Utah, Alabama and Auburn before bouncing back with a season-high score of 197.200 in their latest home meet against Kentucky. As documented in our last issue, any doubts about this team’s ability to win a jaw-dropping sixth consecutive national title would be premature. Not to be dismissive of the “Big Three” winter sports at UGA, but for this edition of BI Athens we shift the focus to some programs that quite simply are not getting the press they deserve for their substantial accomplishments. Included in this issue is a season preview of the 2009 Easton Team of the Year, the Georgia Softball Team, as well as an outlook for the three-time defending national champion Georgia Equestrian Team. Also, look inside for everything you need to know to get primed for the upcoming SEC Swimming and Diving Championships being held right here in Athens at the Ramsey Student Center. With the top ranked women’s swimming and diving team only losing once at home in the history of Gabrielsen Nanatorium, SEC aquatic foes such as Florida and Auburn figure to merely be treading water. One final note for you all, if you love to follow the Dawgs, but don’t trust “those blasted internets,” as I have heard it called, you are missing out. Happy Birthday to the Greatest Bulldog Ever. Dan Magill recently turned 89 years young and is still going as strong as ever, certain to soon add a few more national and southern senior tennis championships to his unparalleled resume. A true renaissance man who has meant so much to so many, the Magnificent Magill has been the heart and soul of Georgia athletics since, as an eight year old, attending the 1929 victory over Yale in the dedicatory game of Sanford Stadium. Magill’s father was the editor of the Athens Banner-Herald, and a young Dan, clad in his football uniform, made his way towards the press box, announcing that he had arrived but they’d already chosen up sides. As publicist, promoter, sports information director and founder of the Georgia Bulldog club, the P.T. Barnum and Grantland Rice of the red and black held the jobs that are now filled by over 40 employees within the UGA Athletic Association. And oh yeah, he also found time to become the winningest coach in the history of collegiate tennis, leading the Bulldogs to a pair of national championships while establishing Athens as the Mecca of collegiate tennis. From 1971-79, Magill guided Georgia to eight Southeastern Conference championships and established the Bulldogs as the southern kings of college tennis. As an annual contender for the NCAA title with stellar players and students like AllAmerican Brent Crymes, Georgia continued to dominate the SEC in the 1980s, reaching the mountaintop in ’85. The greatest senior class in NCAA history, headlined by AllAmerican legends Michael Pernfors, Allen Miller and George Bezecny led the Bulldogs to the national championship. Pernfors would go on to defeat his roommate Bezecny in the singles final. Pernfors and Miller were the No. 1 doubles team. Miller, Georgia’s first ever two time AllAmerican, had teamed with another Swede, Ola Malmqvist to win the 1983 NCAA Double title two years prior. Magill’s Bulldogs would capture the national championship again in 1987. He had planned to retire from coaching following that season, but had promised the father of the United States Tennis Association’s all-time winningest player Al Parker, that he
would coach him for one season. He did just that and retired with the NCAA record for wins, the SEC record for most conference championships and the pair of national titles. In 1977, when Athens became the permanent home of the NCAA championships, Magill decided it would soon be time to pull back from his other duties. His successor as sports information director would be Claude Felton, a Hall of Famer, who is regarded throughout collegiate athletics as the best in the business and within the Athletic Association as one of Georgia’s most trusted, loyal and valued employees ever. When Magill would retire from coaching, his successor would be none other than his former All-American star from the ‘70’s and assistant Manuel Diaz. In the two decades since, Diaz has led Georgia to four national championships and continued the Bulldogs reign atop the SEC. Over a 24 year stretch from 19852008, the Bulldogs played for the national championship 13 times. The tennis complex and Sanford Stadium press box both bear his name, and his successors, Diaz and Felton, are quite simply the greatest tennis coach and sports information director in the land. This season marks the 25 year anniversary of that magical 1985 season and the Dan Magill Tennis Complex will once again serve as the site of the NCAA Championships, cause to rejoice and pay tribute to this extraordinary man for all that he has done. For all of his successes professionally – and what Magill did as SID, Bulldog Club head, and promoter non-parallel match or exceed his immense coaching successes – those who know him most appreciate and adore his brilliant mind, eloquent pen, immense heart and witty tongue. As for what’s next . . . he once said that when he turned 90, he would take up golf. So at Magill’s 89th birthday party, Miller presented him with a copy of Harvey Pennick’s “Little Red Book.� I predict, that on the living legend’s 100th birthday, Magill will shoot better than his age. Happy Birthday to the greatest Bulldog ever - the idol of many, who has done more than anyone for our beloved Georgia.

SWIMming & Diving Why attending the SEC Championship in Athens is a must For the first time since 2004, the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships are headed to the University of Georgia’s campus. Held from February 17-20, the tournament features four days of world class competition from some of the best athletes in the SEC. Bulldawg Illustrated has assembled five reasons why this is an event that you do not want to miss. 1. The Dawgs Need A Homefield Advantage: The #1 ranked women’s squad will be defending a home winning streak that goes back 69 meets, and have only lost one time in Gabrielsen Nanatorium. It will take a strong effort from the Dawgs to keep their streak alive as the tournament will include #7 Florida, #8 Auburn and #11 Tennessee all gunning for the SEC crown. The 12th ranked men’s team is somewhat of an underdog heading into the tournament. #5 Auburn, #6 Florida and #11 Tennessee all look to contend with the Dawgs in what is sure to be a tough battle. 2. Behold the Gabrielsen Nanatorium: Containing over 1.3 Million, that’s right, million gallons of water, the home to the Swim and Dive Dawgs is quite a sight to see. Gabrielsen Nanatorium is named for legendary swimming coach B.W. Gabrielsen, head coach of the Bulldogs from 1948 to 1966. Gabrielsen’s accomplishments included instructing three conference team champions, six All-Americans, one NCAA champion and the Bulldogs' first U.S. Olympic Team member. 3. Georgia Head Coach Jack Bauerle: Georgia’s Head Coach makes Jack Bauer of 24 fame look as pedestrian as an Auburn Tiger. After leading the USA Women’s Swimming to a total of 14 medals in the
2008 Olympic Games (two golds, seven silvers, five bronze), the most of any nation, Bauerle has the Georgia women’s swim and dive squad in the hunt for a fifth national title. 4. Auburn is the Defending Conference and National Champion: Georgia’s oldest football rival is not to be overlooked in swimming either. The Auburn men’s swimming program claims 8 National Titles, their most recent coming in 2009.Add their 12 consecutive conference titles, and you begin to understand what Auburn swimming means to the SEC. Bulldawg Nation, it’s time to come on out and give these War Tigers the welcome they deserve…one that includes a lot of barking. 5. Historic Opportunity: A tournament win would give the Men’s team their fourth SEC title, and their first since 1955. The women’s squad is in the hunt for their seventh crown, the most recent coming in 2006. Team hopes to keep success rolling In its relatively young 14-year heritage, the Georgia Softball Team is carving itself an impressive niche in the UGA Athletic Department. The team plays home games at the state-of-the-art UGA Softball Complex just south of the loop on Milledge Avenue. With the home opener coming up against Virginia Tech in the Third-Annual Red & Black Showcase on February 19th, Dawgs of all ages owe it to themselves to make the short drive down South Milledge to see these girls in action. The Softball Dawgs open 2010 ranked 7th in the USA Today preseason poll. CONSISTENCY: While the Georgia Softball team has seen NCAA postseason action in each of the past 8 years, the Dawgs are coming off of a 2009 campaign that brought the program to a new level. Featuring the youngest team in the nation with 90% underclassmen, the Dawgs posted a 47-12 overall record. The Dawgs were named the Easton Sports Team of the Year, and finished a program-best 4th place in the final national rankings. 2009 marked Georgia’s first ever Women’s World College Series appearance, where the Dawgs were the only team to defeat eventual national champion Washington. NEW CHALLENGES FOR 2010: The Softball team faces a grueling 56-game regular season that features 33 games in Athens. Youth will be a factor yet again for the Dawgs, as the team does not feature a single senior. Georgia starts conference play against two of 2009’s Final Four teams in Florida and Alabama. SEC homestands include series against Florida for a double header on March 10, Arkansas (April 2-3), Auburn (April 17-18) and South Carolina (April 24-25). The Softball team faces archrival Georgia Tech on April 21st YOUNG LEADERS EMERGE: Despite the absence of senior leadership, the 2010 Softball team features some serious impact players. Juniors and 2009 First-Team All-Americans Alisa Goler and Taylor Schlopy both have been featured on the 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List, a distinction limited to 50 players across the nation. ALISA GOLER will head up the infield. The career .367 hitter had a lights-out 2009 season when she set school records for home runs (24) and RBI (83) en route to being a Top 10 Finalist for the 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. TAYLOR SCHLOPY, an outfielder, has an impressive Schlopy's career batting average of .354. Last season, Schlopy hit 15 home runs, had 47 RBI and led the team with 71 runs, 38 walks and 21 stolen bases. The junior from West Hills, California was also recently named an alternate to the 2010 USA National Softball Team. SARAH MCCLOUD (PHOTO RIGHT). is the most experienced returning pitcher for the Dawgs. UgaMiracle to Hold 15th Annual Dance Marathon
UGA Law Hosts International Conference in Athens
Dance Marathon 2010 will be held at the Grand Hall of the Dean William Tate Center on February 20-21. A 24-hour event to celebrate the culmination of ugaMiracle’s year-long efforts, Dance Marathon is where students give up just one day as a symbolic gesture to the kids who spend days, weeks, or months in the hospital.
Conference held from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 at UGA School of Law’s Dean Rusk Center will explore the relationship between human rights and climate change as well as the role of law in managing and regulating that relationship.

Equestrian Ladies back in the saddle 1. Founded in 2002, the Equestrian team has won four National Championships, and five consecutive Southern EQ Championships 2. The University of Georgia maintains and cares for 48 horses on campus off of South Milledge Avenue. Included are American Quarter Horses and warm-blood cross and thoroughbred Huntseat horses. 3. The Equestrian season is divided into two parts, Fall and Spring. Georgia enters the Spring season ranked #1 in the country alongside conference rival Auburn. In the fall, Georgia posted a 6-1 record, including wins over Auburn, South Carolina and a match against Texas A&M that was decided in a tiebreaker. 4. UGA purchased High Point Farm in Bishop, GA in 2009, providing the equestrian team with unsurpassed training facilities. “(High Point Farm) will allow us to offer unmatched opportunities for student-athletes to train and compete at the highest level of col-
lege athletics." – UGA President Michael Adams 5. The team features 59 riders hailing from 16 states, Washington DC and Canada. Only 12 to 20 athletes compete per match while the other team members execute tasks such as tending to the horses. 6. Georgia is seeking its third consecutive national title in 2010. 7. Equestrian Lingo: Diagonals- The correct posting, up/down motion, of the rider in sequence with diagonal movement of the horse's legs at the trot. 8. Upcoming home opponents include: New Mexico State: February 13 South Carolina: February 27 Baylor: February 28 9. All regular season home equestrian events are free and open to the public.
